Psalms 78

1 An exhortation both to learn and to preach the Law of God. 9 The story of God's wrath against the incredulous and disobedient. 67 The Israelites being rejected, God chose Judah, Zion, and David.

 78:1 [[A Maskil of Asaph.]] Listen 238, O my people 5971a, to my instruction 8451; Incline 5186 your ears 241 to the words 561 of my mouth 6310.

 78:2 I will open 6605a my mouth 6310 in a parable 4912; I will utter 5042 dark 2420 sayings 2420 of old 6924a,

 78:3 Which 834 we have heard 8085 and known 3045, And our fathers 1 have told 5608 us.

 78:4 We will not conceal 3582 them from their children 1121, But tell 5608 to the generation 1755 to come 314 the praises 8416 of the LORD 3068, And His strength 5807 and His wondrous 6381 works 6381 that He has done 6213a.

 78:5 ¶ For He established 6965 a testimony 5715 in Jacob 3290 And appointed 7760 a law 8451 in Israel 3478, Which 834 He commanded 6680 our fathers 1 That they should teach 3045 them to their children 1121,

 78:6 That the generation 1755 to come 314 might know 3045, [even] the children 1121 [yet] to be born 3205, [That] they may arise 6965 and tell 5608 [them] to their children 1121,

 78:7 That they should put 7760 their confidence 3689 in God 430 And not forget 7911 the works 4611 of God 410, But keep 5341 His commandments 4687,

 78:8 And not be like their fathers 1, A stubborn 5637 and rebellious 4784 generation 1755, A generation 1755 that did not prepare 3559 its heart 3820 And whose spirit 7307 was not faithful 539 to God 410.

 78:9 ¶ The sons 1121 of Ephraim 669 were archers 7411a equipped 5401b with bows 7198, [Yet] they turned 2015 back 2015 in the day 3117 of battle 7128.

 78:10 They did not keep 8104 the covenant 1285 of God 430 And refused 3985 to walk 1980 in His law 8451;

 78:11 They forgot 7911 His deeds 5949 And His miracles 6381 that He had shown 7200 them.

 78:12 He wrought 6213a wonders 6382 before 5048 their fathers 1 In the land 776 of Egypt 4714, in the field 7704 of Zoan 6814.

 78:13 He divided 1234 the sea 3220 and caused them to pass 5674a through 5674a, And He made the waters 4325 stand 5324 up like 3644 a heap 5067a.

 78:14 Then He led 5148 them with the cloud 6051 by day 3119 And all 3605 the night 3915 with a light 216 of fire 784.

 78:15 He split 1234 the rocks 6697 in the wilderness 4057b And gave 8248 [them] abundant 7227a drink 8248 like the ocean 8415 depths 8415.

 78:16 He brought 3318 forth 3318 streams 5140 also from the rock 5553 And caused waters 4325 to run 3381 down 3381 like rivers 5104.

 78:17 ¶ Yet they still 5750 continued 3254 to sin 2398 against Him, To rebel 4784 against the Most 5945b High 5945b in the desert 6723.

 78:18 And in their heart 3824 they put 5254 God 410 to the test 5254 By asking 7592 food 3978 according to their desire 5315.

 78:19 Then they spoke 1696 against God 430; They said 559, “Can 3201 God 410 prepare 6186a a table 7979 in the wilderness 4057b?

 78:20 “Behold 2005, He struck 5221 the rock 6697 so that waters 4325 gushed 2100 out, And streams 5158a were overflowing 7857; Can 3201 He give 5414 bread 3899 also 1571? Will He provide 3559 meat 7607 for His people 5971a?”

 78:21 ¶ Therefore 3651 the LORD 3068 heard 8085 and was full 5674b of wrath 5674b; And a fire 784 was kindled 8026b against Jacob 3290 And anger 639 also 1571 mounted 5927 against Israel 3478,

 78:22 Because 3588 they did not believe 539 in God 430 And did not trust 982 in His salvation 3444.

 78:23 Yet He commanded 6680 the clouds 7834 above 4480 4605 And opened 6605a the doors 1817 of heaven 8064;

 78:24 He rained 4305 down 4305 manna 4478a upon them to eat 398 And gave 5414 them food 1715 from heaven 8064.

 78:25 Man 376 did eat 398 the bread 3899 of angels 47; He sent 7971 them food 6720 in abundance 7648.

 78:26 He caused the east 6921 wind 6921 to blow 5265 in the heavens 8064 And by His power 5797 He directed 5090a the south 8486 wind 8486.

 78:27 When He rained 4305 meat 7607 upon them like the dust 6083, Even winged 3671 fowl 5775 like the sand 2344 of the seas 3220,

 78:28 Then He let [them] fall 5307 in the midst 7130 of their camp 4264, Round 5439 about 5439 their dwellings 4908.

 78:29 So they ate 398 and were well 3966 filled 7646, And their desire 8378 He gave 935 to them.

 78:30 Before they had satisfied 2114a their desire 8378, While 5750 their food 400 was in their mouths 6310,

 78:31 The anger 639 of God 430 rose 5927 against them And killed 2026 some of their stoutest 4924a ones, And subdued 3766 the choice 970 men 977 of Israel 3478.

 78:32 In spite of all 3605 this 384 they still 5750 sinned 2398 And did not believe 539 in His wonderful 6381 works 6381.

 78:33 So He brought 3615 their days 3117 to an end 3615 in futility 1892 And their years 8141 in sudden 928 terror 928.

 78:34 ¶ When 518 He killed 2026 them, then they sought 1875 Him, And returned 7725 and searched 7836 diligently 7836 for God 410;

 78:35 And they remembered 2142 that God 430 was their rock 6697, And the Most 5945b High 5945b God 410 their Redeemer 1350.

 78:36 But they deceived 6601b Him with their mouth 6310 And lied 3576 to Him with their tongue 3956.

 78:37 For their heart 3820 was not steadfast 3559 toward 5973 Him, Nor 3808 were they faithful 539 in His covenant 1285.

 78:38 But He, being compassionate 7349, forgave 3722a [their] iniquity 5771 and did not destroy 7843 [them]; And often 7235a He restrained 7725 His anger 639 And did not arouse 5782 all 3605 His wrath 2534.

 78:39 Thus He remembered 2142 that they were but flesh 1320, A wind 7307 that passes 1980 and does not return 7725.

 78:40 ¶ How 4100 often 4100 they rebelled 4784 against Him in the wilderness 4057b And grieved 6087a Him in the desert 3452!

 78:41 Again 7725 and again they tempted 5254 God 410, And pained 8428 the Holy 6918 One 6918 of Israel 3478.

 78:42 They did not remember 2142 His power 3027, The day 3117 when 834 He redeemed 6299 them from the adversary 6862c,

 78:43 When 834 He performed 7760 His signs 226 in Egypt 4714 And His marvels 4159 in the field 7704 of Zoan 6814,

 78:44 And turned 2015 their rivers 2975 to blood 1818, And their streams 5140, they could not drink 8354.

 78:45 He sent 7971 among them swarms 6157 of flies 6157 which devoured 398 them, And frogs 6854 which destroyed 7843 them.

 78:46 He gave 5414 also their crops 2981 to the grasshopper 2625 And the product 3018 of their labor 3018 to the locust 697.

 78:47 He destroyed 2026 their vines 1612 with hailstones 1259 And their sycamore 8256 trees 8256 with frost 2602.

 78:48 He gave 5462 over 5462 their cattle 1165 also to the hailstones 1259 And their herds 4735 to bolts 7565 of lightning 7565.

 78:49 He sent 7971 upon them His burning 2740 anger 639, Fury 5678 and indignation 2195 and trouble 6869a, A band 4917 of destroying 7451a angels 4397.

 78:50 He leveled 6424 a path 5410a for His anger 639; He did not spare 2820 their soul 5315 from death 4194, But gave 5462 over 5462 their life 2421b to the plague 1698,

 78:51 And smote 5221 all 3605 the firstborn 1060 in Egypt 4714, The first 7225 [issue] of their virility 202 in the tents 168 of Ham 2526.

 78:52 But He led 5265 forth 5265 His own people 5971a like sheep 6629 And guided 5090a them in the wilderness 4057b like a flock 5739;

 78:53 He led 5148 them safely 983, so that they did not fear 6342; But the sea 3220 engulfed 3680 their enemies 340.

 78:54 ¶ So He brought 935 them to His holy 6944 land 1366, To this 2088 hill 2022 country 2022 which His right 3225 hand 3225 had gained 7069.

 78:55 He also drove 1644 out the nations 1471 before 4480 6440 them And apportioned 5307 them for an inheritance 5159 by measurement 2256a, And made the tribes 7626 of Israel 3478 dwell 7931 in their tents 168.

 78:56 Yet they tempted 5254 and rebelled 4784 against 854 the Most 5945b High 5945b God 430 And did not keep 8104 His testimonies 5713b,

 78:57 But turned 5472 back 5472 and acted 898 treacherously 898 like their fathers 1; They turned 2015 aside 2015 like a treacherous 7423a bow 7198.

 78:58 For they provoked 3707 Him with their high 1116 places 1116 And aroused His jealousy 7065 with their graven 6456 images 6456.

 78:59 When God 430 heard 8085, He was filled 5674b with wrath 5674b And greatly 3966 abhorred 3988a Israel 3478;

 78:60 So that He abandoned 5203 the dwelling 4908 place 4908 at Shiloh 7887, The tent 168 which He had pitched 7931 among men 120,

 78:61 And gave 5414 up His strength 5797 to captivity 7628b And His glory 8597 into the hand 3027 of the adversary 6862c.

 78:62 He also delivered 5462 His people 5971a to the sword 2719, And was filled 5674b with wrath 5674b at His inheritance 5159.

 78:63 Fire 784 devoured 398 His young 970 men 970, And His virgins 1330 had no 3808 wedding 1984b songs 1984b.

 78:64 His priests 3548 fell 5307 by the sword 2719, And His widows 490 could not weep 1058.

 78:65 ¶ Then the Lord 136 awoke 3364 as [if from] sleep 3463, Like a warrior 1368 overcome 7320b by wine 3196.

 78:66 He drove 5221 His adversaries 6862c backward 268; He put 5414 on them an everlasting 5769 reproach 2781.

 78:67 He also rejected 3988a the tent 168 of Joseph 3130, And did not choose 977 the tribe 7626 of Ephraim 669,

 78:68 But chose 977 the tribe 7626 of Judah 3063, Mount 2022 Zion 6726 which 834 He loved 157.

 78:69 And He built 1129 His sanctuary 4720 like 3644 the heights 7311, Like the earth 776 which He has founded 3245 forever 5769.

 78:70 He also chose 977 David 1732 His servant 5650 And took 3947 him from the sheepfolds 6629 4356;

 78:71 From the care 310 of the ewes 5763 with suckling 5763 lambs 5763 He brought 935 him To shepherd 7462a Jacob 3290 His people 5971a, And Israel 3478 His inheritance 5159.

 78:72 So he shepherded 7462a them according to the integrity 8537 of his heart 3824, And guided 5148 them with his skillful 8394 hands 3709.
