Genesis 37

2 Joseph is hated of his brethren. 5 His two dreams. 13 Jacob sendeth him to visit his brethren. 18 His brethren conspire his death. 21 Reuben saveth him. 26 They sell him to the Ishmeelites. 31 His father, deceived by the bloody coat, mourneth for him. 36 He is sold to Potiphar in Egypt.

 37:1 Now Jacob 3290 lived 3427 in the land 776 where 4033 his father 1 had sojourned 4033, in the land 776 of Canaan 3667a.

 37:2 These 428 are [the records of] the generations 8435 of Jacob 3290. ¶ Joseph 3130, when seventeen 7651 6240 years 8141 of age 1121, was pasturing 7462a the flock 6629 with his brothers 251 while he was [still] a youth 5288, along with the sons 1121 of Bilhah 1090a and the sons 1121 of Zilpah 2153, his father’s 1 wives 802. And Joseph 3130 brought 935 back a bad 1681 7451a report 1681 about them to their father 1.

 37:3 Now Israel 3478 loved 157 Joseph 3130 more 4480 than 4480 all 3605 his sons 1121, because 3588 he was the son 1121 of his old 2208 age 2208; and he made 6213a him a varicolored 6446 tunic 3801.

 37:4 His brothers 251 saw 7200 that their father 1 loved 157 him more 4480 than 4480 all 3605 his brothers 251; and [so] they hated 8130 him and could 3201 not speak 1696 to him on friendly 7965 terms 7965.

 37:5 ¶ Then Joseph 3130 had 2492b a dream 2472, and when he told 5046 it to his brothers 251, they hated 8130 him even 5750 more 3254 5750.

 37:6 He said 559 to them, “Please 4994 listen 8085 to this 2088 dream 2472 which 834 I have had 2492b;

 37:7 for behold 2009, we were binding 481 sheaves 485 in the field 7704, and lo 2009, my sheaf 485 rose 6965 up and also 1571 stood 5324 erect 5324; and behold 2009, your sheaves 485 gathered 5437 around 5437 and bowed 7812 down 7812 to my sheaf 485.”

 37:8 Then his brothers 251 said 559 to him, “Are you actually 4427a going to reign 4427a over 5921 us? Or 518 are you really 4910 going to rule 4910 over us?” So they hated 8130 him even 5750 more 3254 5750 for his dreams 2472 and for his words 1697.

 37:9 ¶ Now he had 2492b still 5750 another 312 dream 2472, and related 5608 it to his brothers 251, and said 559, “Lo 2009, I have had 2492b still 5750 another dream 2472; and behold 2009, the sun 8121 and the moon 3394 and eleven 259 6240 stars 3556 were bowing 7812 down 7812 to me.”

 37:10 He related 5608 [it] to his father 1 and to his brothers 251; and his father 1 rebuked 1605 him and said 559 to him, “What 4100 is this 2088 dream 2472 that you have had 2492b? Shall I and your mother 517 and your brothers 251 actually 935 come 935 to bow 7812 ourselves down 7812 before you to the ground 776?”

 37:11 His brothers 251 were jealous 7065 of him, but his father 1 kept 8104 the saying 1697 [in mind].

 37:12 ¶ Then his brothers 251 went 1980 to pasture 7462a their father’s 1 flock 6629 in Shechem 7927.

 37:13 Israel 3478 said 559 to Joseph 3130, “Are not your brothers 251 pasturing 7462a [the flock] in Shechem 7927? Come 1980, and I will send 7971 you to them.” And he said 559 to him, “I will go 2009.”

 37:14 Then he said 559 to him, “Go 1980 now 4994 and see 7200 about the welfare 7965 of your brothers 251 and the welfare 7965 of the flock 6629, and bring 7725 word 1697 back 7725 to me.” So he sent 7971 him from the valley 6010 of Hebron 2275a, and he came 935 to Shechem 7927.

 37:15 ¶ A man 376 found 4672 him, and behold 2009, he was wandering 8582 in the field 7704; and the man 376 asked 7592 him, “What 4100 are you looking 1245 for?”

 37:16 He said 559, “I am looking 1245 for my brothers 251; please 4994 tell 5046 me where 375 they are pasturing 7462a [the flock].”

 37:17 Then the man 376 said 559, “They have moved 5265 from here 2088; for I heard 8085 [them] say 559, ‘Let us go 1980 to Dothan 1886.’” So Joseph 3130 went 1980 after his brothers 251 and found 4672 them at Dothan 1886.

 37:18 ¶ When they saw 7200 him from a distance 7350 and before 2962 he came 7126 close 7126 to them, they plotted 5230 against 854 him to put 4191 him to death 4191.

 37:19 They said 559 to one 376 another 251, “Here 2009 comes 935 this 1976 dreamer 1167 2472!

 37:20 “Now 6258 then, come 1980 and let us kill 2026 him and throw 7993 him into one 259 of the pits 953a; and we will say 559, ‘A wild 7451a beast 2421b devoured 398 him.’ Then let us see 7200 what 4100 will become 1961 of his dreams 2472!”

 37:21 But Reuben 7205 heard 8085 [this] and rescued 5337 him out of their hands 3027 and said 559, “Let us not take 5221 his life 5315.”

 37:22 Reuben 7205 further said 559 to them, “Shed 8210 no 408 blood 1818. Throw 7993 him into this 2088 pit 953a that is in the wilderness 4057b, but do not lay 7971 hands 3027 on him”—that he might rescue 5337 him out of their hands 3027, to restore 7725 him to his father 1.

 37:23 So it came 1961 about, when 3512c Joseph 3130 reached 935 his brothers 251, that they stripped 6584 Joseph 3130 of his tunic 3801, the varicolored 6446 tunic 3801 that was on him;

 37:24 and they took 3947 him and threw 7993 him into the pit 953a. Now the pit 953a was empty 7386, without 369 any water 4325 in it.

 37:25 ¶ Then they sat 3427 down 3427 to eat 398 a meal 3899. And as they raised 5375 their eyes 5869 and looked 7200, behold 2009, a caravan 736 of Ishmaelites 3459 was coming 935 from Gilead 1568, with their camels 1581 bearing 5375 aromatic 5219 gum 5219 and balm 6875 and myrrh 3910, on their way 1980 to bring 3381 [them] down 3381 to Egypt 4714.

 37:26 Judah 3063 said 559 to his brothers 251, “What 4100 profit 1215 is it for us to kill 2026 our brother 251 and cover 3680 up his blood 1818?

 37:27 “Come 1980 and let us sell 4376 him to the Ishmaelites 3459 and not lay 1961 our hands 3027 on him, for he is our brother 251, our [own] flesh 1320.” And his brothers 251 listened 8085 [to him].

 37:28 Then some 376 Midianite 4084 traders 5503 passed 5674a by, so they pulled 4900 [him] up and lifted 5927 Joseph 3130 out of the pit 953a, and sold 4376 him to the Ishmaelites 3459 for twenty 6242 [shekels] of silver 3701. Thus they brought 935 Joseph 3130 into Egypt 4714.

 37:29 ¶ Now Reuben 7205 returned 7725 to the pit 953a, and behold 2009, Joseph 3130 was not in the pit 953a; so he tore 7167 his garments 899b.

 37:30 He returned 7725 to his brothers 251 and said 559, “The boy 3206 is not [there]; as for me, where 575 am I to go 935?”

 37:31 So they took 3947 Joseph’s 3130 tunic 3801, and slaughtered 7819 a male 8163b goat 8163b and dipped 2881 the tunic 3801 in the blood 1818;

 37:32 and they sent 7971 the varicolored 6446 tunic 3801 and brought 935 it to their father 1 and said 559, “We found 4672 this 2088; please 4994 examine 5234 [it] to [see] whether it is your son’s 1121 tunic 3801 or 518 not.”

 37:33 Then he examined 5234 it and said 559, “It is my son’s 1121 tunic 3801. A wild 7451a beast 2421b has devoured 398 him; Joseph 3130 has surely 2963 been torn 2963 to pieces 2963!”

 37:34 So Jacob 3290 tore 7167 his clothes 8071, and put 7760 sackcloth 8242 on his loins 4975 and mourned 56 for his son 1121 many 7227a days 3117.

 37:35 Then all 3605 his sons 1121 and all 3605 his daughters 1323 arose 6965 to comfort 5162 him, but he refused 3985 to be comforted 5162. And he said 559, “Surely 3588 I will go 3381 down 3381 to Sheol 7585 in mourning 57 for my son 1121.” So his father 1 wept 1058 for him.

 37:36 Meanwhile, the Midianites 4084 sold 4376 him in Egypt 4714 to Potiphar 6318, Pharaoh’s 6547 officer 5631, the captain 8269 of the bodyguard 2876.
