Genesis 42

1 Jacob sendeth his ten sons to buy corn in Egypt. 16 They are imprisoned by Joseph for spies. 18 They are set at liberty, on condition to bring Benjamin. 21 They have remorse for Joseph. 24 Simeon is kept for a pledge. 25 They return with corn, and their money. 29 Their relation to Jacob. 36 Jacob refuseth to send Benjamin.

 42:1 Now Jacob 3290 saw 7200 that there 3426 was grain 7668 in Egypt 4714, and Jacob 3290 said 559 to his sons 1121, “Why 4100 are you staring 7200 at one another?”

 42:2 He said 559, “Behold 2009, I have heard 8085 that there 3426 is grain 7668 in Egypt 4714; go 3381 down 3381 there 8033 and buy 7666 [some] for us from that place 8033, so that we may live 2421a and not die 4191.”

 42:3 Then ten 6235 brothers 251 of Joseph 3130 went 3381 down 3381 to buy 7666 grain 1250 from Egypt 4714.

 42:4 But Jacob 3290 did not send 7971 Joseph’s 3130 brother 251 Benjamin 1144 with his brothers 251, for he said 559, “I am afraid that harm 611 may befall 7122 him.”

 42:5 So the sons 1121 of Israel 3478 came 935 to buy 7666 grain 7666 among 8432 those who were coming 935, for the famine 7458 was in the land 776 of Canaan 3667a [also].

 42:6 ¶ Now Joseph 3130 was the ruler 7989 over 5921 the land 776; he was the one who sold 7666 to all 3605 the people 5971a of the land 776. And Joseph’s 3130 brothers 251 came 935 and bowed 7812 down 7812 to him with [their] faces 639 to the ground 776.

 42:7 When Joseph 3130 saw 7200 his brothers 251 he recognized 5234 them, but he disguised 5235a himself to them and spoke 1696 to them harshly 7186. And he said 559 to them, “Where 370 have you come 935 from?” And they said 559, “From the land 776 of Canaan 3667a, to buy 7666 food 400.”

 42:8 ¶ But Joseph 3130 had recognized 5234 his brothers 251, although they did not recognize 5234 him.

 42:9 Joseph 3130 remembered 2142 the dreams 2472 which 834 he had 2492b about them, and said 559 to them, “You are spies 7270; you have come 935 to look 7200 at the undefended 6172 parts 6172 of our land 776.”

 42:10 Then they said 559 to him, “No 3808, my lord 113, but your servants 5650 have come 935 to buy 7666 food 400.

 42:11 “We are all 3605 sons 1121 of one 259 man 376; we are honest 3653a men 3653a, your servants 5650 are not spies 7270.”

 42:12 Yet he said 559 to them, “No 3808, but you have come 935 to look 7200 at the undefended 6172 parts 6172 of our land 776!”

 42:13 But they said 559, “Your servants 5650 are twelve 8147 6240 brothers 251 [in all], the sons 1121 of one 259 man 376 in the land 776 of Canaan 3667a; and behold 2009, the youngest 6996b is with our father 1 today 3117, and one 259 is no 369 longer 369 alive.”

 42:14 Joseph 3130 said 559 to them, “It is as I said 1696 to you, you are spies 7270;

 42:15 by this 2088 you will be tested 974: by the life 2416a of Pharaoh 6547, you shall not go 3318 from this 2088 place unless 3588 518 your youngest 6996b brother 251 comes 935 here 2008!

 42:16 “Send 7971 one 259 of you that he may get 3947 your brother 251, while you remain confined 631, that your words 1697 may be tested 974, whether there is truth 571 in you. But if 518 not, by the life 2416a of Pharaoh 6547, surely 3588 you are spies 7270.”

 42:17 So he put 622 them all 622 together 622 in prison 4929 for three 7969 days 3117.

 42:18 ¶ Now Joseph 3130 said 559 to them on the third 7992 day 3117, “Do 6213a this 2088 and live 2421a, for I fear 3372a God 430:

 42:19 if 518 you are honest 3653a men 3653a, let one 259 of your brothers 251 be confined 631 in your prison 1004 4929; but as for [the rest of] you, go 1980, carry 935 grain 7668 for the famine 7459 of your households 1004,

 42:20 and bring 935 your youngest 6996b brother 251 to me, so your words 1697 may be verified 539, and you will not die 4191.” And they did 6213a so 3651.

 42:21 Then they said 559 to one 376 another 251, “Truly 61 we are guilty 818 concerning 5921 our brother 251, because 834 we saw 7200 the distress 6869a of his soul 5315 when he pleaded 2603a with us, yet we would not listen 8085; therefore 5921 3651 this 2088 distress 6869a has come 935 upon us.”

 42:22 Reuben 7205 answered 6030a them, saying 559, “Did I not tell 559 you, ‘Do not sin 2398 against the boy 3206’; and you would not listen 8085? Now 1571 2009 comes 1875 the reckoning 1875 for his blood 1818.”

 42:23 They did not know 3045, however, that Joseph 3130 understood 8085, for there was an interpreter 3917b between 996 them.

 42:24 He turned 5437 away 5437 from them and wept 1058. But when he returned 7725 to them and spoke 1696 to them, he took 3947 Simeon 8095 from them and bound 631 him before their eyes 5869.

 42:25 Then Joseph 3130 gave 6680 orders 6680 to fill 4390 their bags 3627 with grain 1250 and to restore 7725 every 376 man’s 376 money 3701 in his sack 8242, and to give 5414 them provisions 6720 for the journey 1870. And thus 3651 it was done 6213a for them.

 42:26 ¶ So they loaded 5375 their donkeys 2543 with their grain 7668 and departed 1980 from there 8033.

 42:27 As one 259 [of them] opened 6605a his sack 8242 to give 5414 his donkey 2543 fodder 4554 at the lodging 4411 place 4411, he saw 7200 his money 3701; and behold 2009, it was in the mouth 6310 of his sack 572.

 42:28 Then he said 559 to his brothers 251, “My money 3701 has been returned 7725, and behold 2009, it is even 1571 in my sack 572.” And their hearts 3820 sank 3318, and they [turned] trembling 2729 to one 376 another 251, saying 559, “What 4100 is this 2088 that God 430 has done 6213a to us?”

 42:29 ¶ When they came 935 to their father 1 Jacob 3290 in the land 776 of Canaan 3667a, they told 5046 him all 3605 that had happened 7136a to them, saying 559,

 42:30 “The man 376, the lord 113 of the land 776, spoke 1696 harshly 7186 with us, and took 5414 us for spies 7270 of the country 776.

 42:31 “But we said 559 to him, ‘We are honest 3653a men 3653a; we are not spies 7270.

 42:32 ‘We are twelve 8147 6240 brothers 251, sons 1121 of our father 1; one 259 is no 369 longer 369 alive, and the youngest 6996b is with our father 1 today 3117 in the land 776 of Canaan 3667a.’

 42:33 “The man 376, the lord 113 of the land 776, said 559 to us, ‘By this 2088 I will know 3045 that you are honest 3653a men 3653a: leave 5117 one 259 of your brothers 251 with me and take 3947 [grain for] the famine 7459 of your households 1004, and go 1980.

 42:34 ‘But bring 935 your youngest 6996b brother 251 to me that I may know 3045 that you are not spies 7270, but honest 3653a men 3653a. I will give 5414 your brother 251 to you, and you may trade 5503 in the land 776.’”

 42:35 ¶ Now it came 1961 about as they were emptying 7385a their sacks 8242, that behold 2009, every 376 man’s 376 bundle 6872a of money 3701 [was] in his sack 8242; and when they and their father 1 saw 7200 their bundles 6872a of money 3701, they were dismayed 3372a.

 42:36 Their father 1 Jacob 3290 said 559 to them, “You have bereaved 7921 me of my children 7921: Joseph 3130 is no 369 more 369, and Simeon 8095 is no 369 more 369, and you would take 3947 Benjamin 1144; all 3605 these things are against 5921 me.”

 42:37 Then Reuben 7205 spoke 559 to his father 1, saying 559, “You may put 4191 my two 8147 sons 1121 to death 4191 if 518 I do not bring 935 him [back] to you; put 5414 him in my care 3027, and I will return 7725 him to you.”

 42:38 But Jacob said 559, “My son 1121 shall not go 3381 down 3381 with you; for his brother 251 is dead 4191, and he alone 905 is left 7604. If harm 611 should befall 7122 him on the journey 1870 you are taking 1980, then you will bring 3381 my gray 7872 hair 7872 down 3381 to Sheol 7585 in sorrow 3015.”
