 36:1 ¶ Now it came to passº in the fourteenthºº yearº of kingº Çizkiyyà חִזקִיָּה,º [that] Sançërîv סַנחֵרִיבº kingº of ´Aššûr אַשּׁוּרº came upºº againstº allº the defencedºº citiesº of Yæhûðà יְהוּדָה,º and tookºº them.

 36:1 ¶ Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Chizqiyyah, [that] Sancheriv king of Ashshur came up against all the defenced cities of Yehudah, and took them.

 36:2 And the kingº of ´Aššûr אַשּׁוּרº sentººº Rav Šäkì רַב־שָׁקֵהº from Lä¢îš לָכִישׁºº to Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַםº untoº kingº Çizkiyyà חִזקִיָּהº with a greatº army.ºº And he stoodºº by the conduitº of the upperº poolº in the highwayº of the fuller'sºº field.º

 36:2 And the king of Ashshur sent Rav-Shaqeh from Lakhish to Yerushalaim unto king Chizqiyyah with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller's field.

 36:3 Then came forthºº untoº him ´Elyäkîm אֶליָקִים,º Çilkiyyà's חִלקִיָּהº son,º whichº was overº the house,º and Ševnä´ שֶׁבנָאº the scribe,ºº and Yô´äç יוֹאָח,º ´Äsäf's אָסָףº son,º the recorder.ºº

 36:3 Then came forth unto him Elyaqim, Chilqiyyah's son, which was over the house, and Shevna the scribe, and Yoach, Asaf's son, the recorder.

 36:4 ¶ And Rav Šäkì רַב־שָׁקֵהº saidºº untoº them, Sayºº ye nowº toº Çizkiyyà חִזקִיָּה,º Thusº saithºº the greatº king,º the kingº of ´Aššûr אַשּׁוּר,º Whatº confidenceº [is] thisº whereinº thou trustest?ºº

 36:4 ¶ And Rav-Shaqeh said unto them, Say ye now to Chizqiyyah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Ashshur, What confidence [is] this wherein thou trustest?

 36:5 I say,ºº [sayest thou], (butº [they are but] vainº words)º [I have] counselº and strengthº for war:º nowº onº whomº dost thou trust,ºº thatº thou rebellestºº against me?

 36:5 I say, [sayest thou], (but [they are but] vain words) [I have] counsel and strength for war: now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?

 36:6 Lo,º thou trustestºº inº the staffº of thisº brokenºº reed,º onº Mixrayim מִצרַיִם;º whereonºº if a manº lean,ºº it will goºº into his hand,º and pierceºº it: soº [is] Par`ò פַּרעֹהº kingº of Mixrayim מִצרַיִםº to allº that trustºº inº him.

 36:6 Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Mitzrayim; whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so [is] Paroh king of Mitzrayim to all that trust in him.

 36:7 Butº if thou sayºº toº me, We trustºº inº Yähwè יָהוֶהº our ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים:º [is it] notº he,ºº whoseº high placesº and whose altarsº Çizkiyyà חִזקִיָּהº hath taken away,ºº and saidºº to Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº and to Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַם,º Ye shall worshipºº beforeº thisº altar?º

 36:7 But if thou say to me, We trust in Yahweh our Elohim: [is it] not he, whose high places and whose altars Chizqiyyah hath taken away, and said to Yehudah and to Yerushalaim, Ye shall worship before this altar?

 36:8 Nowº therefore give pledges,ººº I pray thee,º toº my ´áðôn אֲדוֹןº the kingº of ´Aššûr אַשּׁוּר,º and I will giveºº thee two thousandº horses,º ifº thou be ableºº on thy part to setºº ridersºº uponº them.

 36:8 Now therefore give pledges, I pray thee, to my adon the king of Ashshur, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.

 36:9 Howº then wilt thou turn awayººº the faceº of oneº captainº of the leastº of my ´áðôn's אֲדוֹןº servants,º and put thy trustºº onº Mixrayim מִצרַיִםº for chariotsº and for horsemen?º

 36:9 How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my adon's servants, and put thy trust on Mitzrayim for chariots and for horsemen?

 36:10 And am I nowº come upºº withoutºº Yähwè יָהוֶהº againstº thisº landº to destroyºº it? Yähwè יָהוֶהº saidºº untoº me, Go upºº againstº thisº land,º and destroyºº it.

 36:10 And am I now come up without Yahweh against this land to destroy it? Yahweh said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.

 36:11 ¶ Then saidºº ´Elyäkîm אֶליָקִיםº and Ševnä´ שֶׁבנָאº and Yô´äç יוֹאָחº untoº Rav Šäkì רַב־שָׁקֵה,º Speak,ºº I pray thee,º untoº thy servantsº in the ´Árämî± אֲרָמִית language;º forº weº understandºº [it]: and speakºº notº toº us in the Yæhûðîm's יְהוּדִים language,º in the earsº of the peopleº thatº [are] onº the wall.º

 36:11 ¶ Then said Elyaqim and Shevna and Yoach unto Rav-Shaqeh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the Aramith language; for we understand [it]: and speak not to us in the Yehudim's language, in the ears of the people that [are] on the wall.

 36:12 ¶ But Rav Šäkì רַב־שָׁקֵהº said,ºº Hath my ´áðôn אֲדוֹןº sentºº me toº thy ´áðôn אֲדוֹןº and toº thee to speakººº theseº words?º [hath he] notº [sent me] toº the menºº that sitºº uponº the wall,º that they may eatººº their own dung,ººº and drinkººº their own pissºººº withº you?

 36:12 ¶ But Rav-Shaqeh said, Hath my adon sent me to thy adon and to thee to speak these words? [hath he] not [sent me] to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?

 36:13 Then Rav Šäkì רַב־שָׁקֵהº stood,ºº and criedºº with a loudº voiceº in the Yæhûðîm's יְהוּדִים language,º and said,ºº Hearºº yeº the wordsº of the greatº king,º the kingº of ´Aššûr אַשּׁוּר.º

 36:13 Then Rav-Shaqeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Yehudim's language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Ashshur.

 36:14 Thusº saithºº the king,º Let notº Çizkiyyà חִזקִיָּהº deceiveºº you: forº he shall notº be ableºº to deliverºº you.

 36:14 Thus saith the king, Let not Chizqiyyah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you.

 36:15 Neitherº let Çizkiyyà חִזקִיָּהº make you trustººº inº Yähwè יָהוֶה,º saying,ºº Yähwè יָהוֶהº will surelyºº deliverºº us: thisº cityº shall notº be deliveredºº into the handº of the kingº of ´Aššûr אַשּׁוּר.º

 36:15 Neither let Chizqiyyah make you trust in Yahweh, saying, Yahweh will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Ashshur.

 36:16 Hearkenºº notº toº Çizkiyyà חִזקִיָּה:º forº thusº saithºº the kingº of ´Aššûr אַשּׁוּר,º Makeºº [an agreement] withº me [by] a present,º and come outºº toº me: and eatºº ye every oneº of his vine,º and every oneº of his fig tree,º and drinkºº ye every oneº the watersº of his own cistern;º

 36:16 Hearken not to Chizqiyyah: for thus saith the king of Ashshur, Make [an agreement] with me [by] a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;

 36:17 Untilº I comeºº and take you awayººº toº a landº like your own land,º a landº of cornº and wine,º a landº of breadº and vineyards.º

 36:17 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.

 36:18 [Beware] lestº Çizkiyyà חִזקִיָּהº persuadeºº you, saying,ºº Yähwè יָהוֶהº will deliverºº us. Hath anyº of the ´élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº of the nationsº deliveredººº his landº out of the handºº of the kingº of ´Aššûr אַשּׁוּר?º

 36:18 [Beware] lest Chizqiyyah persuade you, saying, Yahweh will deliver us. Hath any of the elohim of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Ashshur?

 36:19 Whereº [are] the ´élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº of Çámä± חֲמָתº and ´Arpäð אַרפָּד?º whereº [are] the ´élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº of Sæfarwayim סְפַרוַיִם?º andº have they deliveredººº Šömrôn שֹׁמרוֹןº out of my hand?ºº

 36:19 Where [are] the elohim of Chamath and Arpad? where [are] the elohim of Sefarwayim? and have they delivered Shomron out of my hand?

 36:20 Whoº [are they] among allº the ´élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº of theseº lands,º thatº have deliveredººº their landº out of my hand,ºº thatº Yähwè יָהוֶהº should deliverººº Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַםº out of my hand?ºº

 36:20 Who [are they] among all the elohim of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that Yahweh should deliver Yerushalaim out of my hand?

 36:21 But they held their peace,ºº and answeredºº him notº a word:º forº the king'sº commandmentº was, saying,ºº Answerºº him not.º

 36:21 But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not.

 36:22 ¶ Then cameºº ´Elyäkîm אֶליָקִים,º the sonº of Çilkiyyà חִלקִיָּה,º thatº [was] overº the household,º and Ševnä´ שֶׁבנָאº the scribe,ºº and Yô´äç יוֹאָח,º the sonº of ´Äsäf אָסָף,º the recorder,ºº toº Çizkiyyà חִזקִיָּהº with [their] clothesº rent,ºº and toldºº himº the wordsº of Rav Šäkì רַב־שָׁקֵה.º

 36:22 ¶ Then came Elyaqim, the son of Chilqiyyah, that [was] over the household, and Shevna the scribe, and Yoach, the son of Asaf, the recorder, to Chizqiyyah with [their] clothes rent, and told him the words of Rav-Shaqeh.
