Deuteronomy 17

1 The things sacrificed must be sound. 2 Idolaters must be slain. 8 Hard controversies are to be determined by the priests and judges. 12 The contemner of that determination must die. 14 The election, 16 and duty of a king.

 17:1 “You shall not sacrifice 2076 to the LORD 3068 your God 430 an ox 7794 or a sheep 7716 which 834 has 1961 a blemish 4140b [or] any 3605 defect 1697 7451a, for that is a detestable 8441 thing 8441 to the LORD 3068 your God 430.

 17:2 ¶ “If 3588 there is found 4672 in your midst 7130, in any 259 of your towns 8179, which 834 the LORD 3068 your God 430 is giving 5414 you, a man 376 or 176 a woman 802 who 834 does 6213a what 7451a is evil 7451a in the sight 5869 of the LORD 3068 your God 430, by transgressing 5674a His covenant 1285,

 17:3 and has gone 1980 and served 5647 other 312 gods 430 and worshiped 7812 them, or the sun 8121 or 176 the moon 3394 or 176 any 3605 of the heavenly 8064 host 6635, which 834 I have not commanded 6680,

 17:4 and if it is told 5046 you and you have heard 8085 of it, then you shall inquire 1875 thoroughly 3190. Behold 2009, if it is true 571 and the thing 1697 certain 3559 that this 2088 detestable 8441 thing 8441 has been done 6213a in Israel 3478,

 17:5 then you shall bring 3318 out that man 376 or 176 that woman 802 who 834 has done 6213a this 2088 evil 7451a deed 1697 to your gates 8179, [that is], the man 376 or 176 the woman 802, and you shall stone 5619 them to death 4191.

 17:6 “On the evidence 6310 of two 8147 witnesses 5707 or 176 three 7969 witnesses 5707, he who is to die 4191 shall be put 4191 to death 4191; he shall not be put 4191 to death 4191 on the evidence 6310 of one 259 witness 5707.

 17:7 “The hand 3027 of the witnesses 5707 shall be first 7223 against him to put 4191 him to death 4191, and afterward 314 the hand 3027 of all 3605 the people 5971a. So you shall purge 1197a the evil 7451b from your midst 7130.

 17:8 ¶ “If 3588 any case 1697 is too 4480 difficult 6381 for you to decide 4941, between 996 one kind of homicide 1818 or another 1818, between 996 one kind of lawsuit 1779 or another 1779, and between 996 one kind of assault 5061 or another 5061, being cases 1697 of dispute 7379 in your courts 8179, then you shall arise 6965 and go 5927 up to the place 4725 which 834 the LORD 3068 your God 430 chooses 977.

 17:9 “So you shall come 935 to the Levitical 3881 priest 3548 or the judge 8199 who 834 is [in office] in those 1992a days 3117, and you shall inquire 1875 [of them] and they will declare 5046 to you the verdict 1697 in the case 4941.

 17:10 “You shall do 6213a according 5921 to the terms 6310 of the verdict 1697 which 834 they declare 5046 to you from that place 4725 which 834 the LORD 3068 chooses 977; and you shall be careful 8104 to observe 6213a according to all 3605 that they teach 3384 you.

 17:11 “According 5921 to the terms 6310 of the law 8451 which 834 they teach 3384 you, and according 5921 to the verdict 4941 which 834 they tell 5046 you, you shall do 6213a; you shall not turn 5493 aside 5493 from the word 1697 which 834 they declare 5046 to you, to the right 3225 or the left 8040.

 17:12 “The man 376 who 834 acts 6213a presumptuously 2087 by not listening 8085 to the priest 3548 who stands 5975 there 8033 to serve 8334 the LORD 3068 your God 430, nor 176 to the judge 8199, that man 376 shall die 4191; thus you shall purge 1197a the evil 7451b from Israel 3478.

 17:13 “Then all 3605 the people 5971a will hear 8085 and be afraid 3372a, and will not act 2102 presumptuously 2102 again 5750.

 17:14 ¶ “When 3588 you enter 935 the land 776 which 834 the LORD 3068 your God 430 gives 5414 you, and you possess 3423 it and live 3427 in it, and you say 559, ‘I will set 7760 a king 4428 over 5921 me like all 3605 the nations 1471 who 834 are around 5439 me,’

 17:15 you shall surely 7760 set 7760 a king 4428 over 5921 you whom 834 the LORD 3068 your God 430 chooses 977, [one] from among 7130 your countrymen 251 you shall set 7760 as king 4428 over 5921 yourselves; you may 3201 not put 5414 a foreigner 5237 over 5921 yourselves who 834 is not your countryman 251.

 17:16 “Moreover 7534, he shall not multiply 7235a horses 5483b for himself, nor 3808 shall he cause the people 5971a to return 7725 to Egypt 4714 to multiply 7235a horses 5483b, since the LORD 3068 has said 559 to you, ‘You shall never 3808 again 3254 return 7725 that way 1870.’

 17:17 “He shall not multiply 7235a wives 802 for himself, or 3808 else 3808 his heart 3824 will turn 5493 away 5493; nor 3808 shall he greatly 3966 increase 7235a silver 3701 and gold 2091 for himself.

 17:18 ¶ “Now it shall come 1961 about when he sits 3427 on the throne 3678 of his kingdom 4467, he shall write 3789 for himself a copy 4932 of this 2088 law 8451 on a scroll 5612 in the presence 6440 of the Levitical 3881 priests 3548.

 17:19 “It shall be with him and he shall read 7121 it all 3605 the days 3117 of his life 2425b, that he may learn 3925 to fear 3372a the LORD 3068 his God 430, by carefully 6213a observing 6213a all 3605 the words 1697 of this 2088 law 8451 and these 428 statutes 2706,

 17:20 that his heart 3824 may not be lifted 7311 up above 4480 his countrymen 251 and that he may not turn 5493 aside 5493 from the commandment 4687, to the right 3225 or the left 8040, so 4616 that he and his sons 1121 may continue 748 long 748 3117 in his kingdom 4467 in the midst 7130 of Israel 3478.
