Jeremiah 42

1 Johanan desireth Jeremiah to enquire of God, promising obedience to his will. 7 Jeremiah assureth him of safety in Judea, 13 and destruction in Egypt. 19 He reproveth their hypocrisy, in requiring of the LORD that which they meant not.

 42:1 Then all 3605 the commanders 8269 of the forces 2428, Johanan 3076 the son 1121 of Kareah 7143, Jezaniah 3153 the son 1121 of Hoshaiah 1955, and all 3605 the people 5971a both 4480 small 6996b and great 1419 approached 5066

 42:2 and said 559 to Jeremiah 3414 the prophet 5030, “Please 4994 let our petition 8467 come 5307 before 6440 you, and pray 6419 for us to the LORD 3068 your God 430, [that is] for all 3605 this 384 remnant 7611; because 3588 we are left 7604 [but] a few 4592 out of many 7235a, as your own eyes 5869 [now] see 7200 us,

 42:3 that the LORD 3068 your God 430 may tell 5046 us the way 1870 in which 834 we should walk 1980 and the thing 1697 that we should do 6213a.”

 42:4 Then Jeremiah 3414 the prophet 5030 said 559 to them, “I have heard 8085 [you]. Behold 2009, I am going to pray 6419 to the LORD 3068 your God 430 in accordance with your words 1697; and I will tell 5046 you the whole 3605 message 1697 which 834 the LORD 3068 will answer 6030a you. I will not keep 4513 back 4513 a word 1697 from you.”

 42:5 Then they said 559 to Jeremiah 3414, “May the LORD 3068 be a true 571 and faithful 539 witness 5707 against us if 518 we do not act 6213a in accordance with the whole 3605 message 1697 with which 834 the LORD 3068 your God 430 will send 7971 you to us.

 42:6 “Whether 518 [it] is pleasant 2896b or 518 unpleasant 7451b, we will listen 8085 to the voice 6963 of the LORD 3068 our God 430 to whom 834 we are sending 7971 you, so 4616 that it may go 3190 well 3190 with us when 3588 we listen 8085 to the voice 6963 of the LORD 3068 our God 430.”

 42:7 ¶ Now at the end 7093 of ten 6235 days 3117 the word 1697 of the LORD 3068 came 1961 to Jeremiah 3414.

 42:8 Then he called 7121 for Johanan 3076 the son 1121 of Kareah 7143 and all 3605 the commanders 8269 of the forces 2428 that were with him, and for all 3605 the people 5971a both 4480 small 6996b and great 1419,

 42:9 and said 559 to them, “Thus 3541 says 559 the LORD 3068 the God 430 of Israel 3478, to whom 834 you sent 7971 me to present 5307 your petition 8467 before 6440 Him:

 42:10 ‘If 518 you will indeed 7725 stay 3427 in this 384 land 776, then I will build 1129 you up and not tear 2040 you down 2040, and I will plant 5193 you and not uproot 5428 you; for I will relent 5162 concerning 413 the calamity 7463a that I have inflicted 6213a on you.

 42:11 ‘Do not be afraid 3372a of the king 4428 of Babylon 894, whom 834 you are [now] fearing 3372a; do not be afraid 3372a of him,’ declares 5002 the LORD 3068, ‘for I am with you to save 3467 you and deliver 5337 you from his hand 3027.

 42:12 ‘I will also show 5414 you compassion 7356, so that he will have 7355 compassion 7355 on you and restore 7725 you to your own soil 127.

 42:13 ‘But if 518 you are going to say 559, “We will not stay 3427 in this 384 land 776,” so as not to listen 8085 to the voice 6963 of the LORD 3068 your God 430,

 42:14 saying 559, “No 3808, but we will go 935 to the land 776 of Egypt 4714, where 834 we will not see 7200 war 4421 or hear 8085 the sound 6963 of a trumpet 7782 or hunger 7456 for bread 3899, and we will stay 3427 there 8033”;

 42:15 then in that case 3651 listen 8085 to the word 1697 of the LORD 3068, O remnant 7611 of Judah 3063. Thus 3541 says 559 the LORD 3068 of hosts 6635, the God 430 of Israel 3478, “If 518 you really 7760 set 7760 your mind 6440 to enter 935 Egypt 4714 and go 935 in to reside 1481a there 8033,

 42:16 then the sword 2719, which 834 you are afraid 3372a of, will overtake 5381 you there 8033 in the land 776 of Egypt 4714; and the famine 7458, about which 834 you are anxious 1672, will follow 1692 closely 1692 after 310 you there 8033 [in] Egypt 4714, and you will die 4191 there 8033.

 42:17 “So all 3605 the men 376 who 834 set 7760 their mind 6440 to go 935 to Egypt 4714 to reside 1481a there 8033 will die 4191 by the sword 2719, by famine 7458 and by pestilence 1698; and they will have 1961 no 3808 survivors 8300 or refugees 6412a from the calamity 7463a that I am going to bring 935 on them.”’”

 42:18 ¶ For thus 3541 says 559 the LORD 3068 of hosts 6635, the God 430 of Israel 3478, “As My anger 639 and wrath 2534 have been poured 5413 out on the inhabitants 3427 of Jerusalem 3389, so 3651 My wrath 2534 will be poured 5413 out on you when you enter 935 Egypt 4714. And you will become 1961 a curse 7045, an object 8047 of horror 8047, an imprecation 7045 and a reproach 2781; and you will see 7200 this 2088 place 4725 no 3808 more 5750.”

 42:19 The LORD 3068 has spoken 1696 to you, O remnant 7611 of Judah 3063, “Do not go 935 into Egypt 4714!” You should clearly 3045 understand 3045 that today 3117 I have testified 5749b against you.

 42:20 For you have [only] deceived 8582 yourselves 5315; for it is you who sent 7971 me to the LORD 3068 your God 430, saying 559, “Pray 6419 for us to the LORD 3068 our God 430; and whatever 3605 834 the LORD 3068 our God 430 says 559, tell 5046 us so 3651, and we will do 6213a it.”

 42:21 So I have told 5046 you today 3117, but you have not obeyed 8085 6963 the LORD 3068 your God 430, even in whatever 3605 834 He has sent 7971 me to [tell] you.

 42:22 Therefore you should now 6258 clearly 3045 understand 3045 that you will die 4191 by the sword 2719, by famine 7458 and by pestilence 1698, in the place 4725 where 834 8033 you wish 2654a to go 935 to reside 1481a.
