Jeremiah 40

1 Jeremiah, being set free by Nebuzar-adan, goeth to Gedaliah. 7 The dispersed Jews repair unto him. 13 Johanan revealing Ishmael's conspiracy is not believed.

 40:1 The word 1697 which 834 came 1961 to Jeremiah 3414 from the LORD 3068 after 310 Nebuzaradan 5018 captain 7227b of the bodyguard 2876 had released 7971 him from Ramah 7414, when he had taken 3947 him bound 631 in chains 246 among 8432 all 3605 the exiles 1546 of Jerusalem 3389 and Judah 3063 who were being exiled 1540 to Babylon 894.

 40:2 Now the captain 7227b of the bodyguard 2876 had taken 3947 Jeremiah 3414 and said 559 to him, “The LORD 3068 your God 430 promised 1696 this 384 calamity 7463a against 413 this 2088 place 4725;

 40:3 and the LORD 3068 has brought 935 [it] on and done 6213a just 3512c as He promised 1696. Because 3588 you [people] sinned 2398 against the LORD 3068 and did not listen 8085 to His voice 6963, therefore this 2088 thing 1697 has happened 1961 to you.

 40:4 “But now 6258, behold 2009, I am freeing 6605a you today 3117 from the chains 246 which 834 are on your hands 3027. If 518 you would prefer 7489a 5869 to come 935 with me to Babylon 894, come 935 [along], and I will look 7760 5869 after 5921 you; but if 518 you would prefer 7489a 5869 not to come 935 with me to Babylon 894, never 2308 mind 2308. Look 7200, the whole 3605 land 776 is before 6440 you; go 1980 wherever 8033 it seems good 2896a and right 3477 for you to go 1980.”

 40:5 As Jeremiah was still 5750 not going 7725 back 7725, [he said], “Go 7725 on back 7725 then to Gedaliah 1436a the son 1121 of Ahikam 296, the son 1121 of Shaphan 8227b, whom 834 the king 4428 of Babylon 894 has appointed 6485 over the cities 5892b of Judah 3063, and stay 3427 with him among 8432 the people 5971a; or 176 else go 1980 anywhere 3605 it seems right 3477 for you to go 1980.” So the captain 7227b of the bodyguard 2876 gave 5414 him a ration 737 and a gift 4864 and let 7971 him go 7971.

 40:6 Then Jeremiah 3414 went 935 to Mizpah 4709 to Gedaliah 1436b the son 1121 of Ahikam 296 and stayed 3427 with him among 8432 the people 5971a who were left 7604 in the land 776.

 40:7 ¶ Now all 3605 the commanders 8269 of the forces 2428 that were in the field 7704, they and their men 376, heard 8085 that the king 4428 of Babylon 894 had appointed 6485 Gedaliah 1436b the son 1121 of Ahikam 296 over the land 776 and that he had put 6485 him in charge 6485 of the men 376, women 802 and children 2945, those of the poorest 1803b of the land 776 who 834 had not been exiled 1540 to Babylon 894.

 40:8 So they came 935 to Gedaliah 1436a at Mizpah 4709, along with Ishmael 3458 the son 1121 of Nethaniah 5418, and Johanan 3076 and Jonathan 3083 the sons 1121 of Kareah 7143, and Seraiah 8304 the son 1121 of Tanhumeth 8576, and the sons 1121 of Ephai 5778 the Netophathite 5200, and Jezaniah 3153 the son 1121 of the Maacathite 4602, [both] they and their men 376.

 40:9 Then Gedaliah 1436b the son 1121 of Ahikam 296, the son 1121 of Shaphan 8227b, swore 7650 to them and to their men 376, saying 559, “Do not be afraid 3372a of serving 5647 the Chaldeans 3778; stay 3427 in the land 776 and serve 5647 the king 4428 of Babylon 894, that it may go 3190 well 3190 with you.

 40:10 “Now as for me, behold 2009, I am going to stay 3427 at Mizpah 4709 to stand 5975 [for you] before 6440 the Chaldeans 3778 who 834 come 935 to us; but as for you, gather 622 in wine 3196 and summer 7019c fruit 7019c and oil 8081 and put 7760 [them] in your [storage] vessels 3627, and live 3427 in your cities 5892b that you have taken 8610 over 8610.”

 40:11 Likewise, also 1571 all 3605 the Jews 3064 who 834 were in Moab 4124 and among the sons 1121 of Ammon 5983 and in Edom 112b and who 834 were in all 3605 the [other] countries 776, heard 8085 that the king 4428 of Babylon 894 had left 5414 a remnant 7611 for Judah 3063, and that he had appointed 6485 over 5921 them Gedaliah 1436b the son 1121 of Ahikam 296, the son 1121 of Shaphan 8227b.

 40:12 Then all 3605 the Jews 3064 returned 7725 from all 3605 the places 4725 to which 834 they had been driven 5080 away 5080 and came 935 to the land 776 of Judah 3063, to Gedaliah 1436b at Mizpah 4709, and gathered 622 in wine 3196 and summer 7019c fruit 7019c in great 3966 abundance 7235a.

 40:13 ¶ Now Johanan 3076 the son 1121 of Kareah 7143 and all 3605 the commanders 8269 of the forces 2428 that were in the field 7704 came 935 to Gedaliah 1436b at Mizpah 4709

 40:14 and said 559 to him, “Are you well 3045 aware 3045 that Baalis 1185 the king 4428 of the sons 1121 of Ammon 5983 has sent 7971 Ishmael 3458 the son 1121 of Nethaniah 5418 to take 5221 your life 5315?” But Gedaliah 1436b the son 1121 of Ahikam 296 did not believe 539 them.

 40:15 Then Johanan 3076 the son 1121 of Kareah 7143 spoke 559 secretly 5643a to Gedaliah 1436b in Mizpah 4709, saying 559, “Let me go 1980 and kill 5221 Ishmael 3458 the son 1121 of Nethaniah 5418, and not a man 376 will know 3045! Why 4100 should he take 5221 your life 5315, so that all 3605 the Jews 3063 who are gathered 6908 to you would be scattered 6327a and the remnant 7611 of Judah 3063 would perish 6?”

 40:16 But Gedaliah 1436b the son 1121 of Ahikam 296 said 559 to Johanan 3076 the son 1121 of Kareah 7143, “Do not do 6213a this 2088 thing 1697, for you are telling 1696 a lie 8267 about 413 Ishmael 3458.”
