Exodus 1

1 The children of Israel, after Joseph's death, do multiply. 8 The more they are oppressed by a new king, the more they multiply. 15 The godliness of the midwives, in saving the men children alive. 22 Pharaoh commandeth the male children to be cast into the river.

 1:1 Now these 428 are the names 8034 of the sons 1121 of Israel 3478 who came 935 to Egypt 4714 with Jacob 3290; they came 935 each 376 one 376 with his household 1004:

 1:2 Reuben 7205, Simeon 8095, Levi 3878 and Judah 3063;

 1:3 Issachar 3485, Zebulun 2074 and Benjamin 1144;

 1:4 Dan 1835 and Naphtali 5321, Gad 1410 and Asher 836.

 1:5 All 3605 the persons 5315 who came 3318 from the loins 3409 of Jacob 3290 were seventy 7657 in number 5315, but Joseph 3130 was [already] in Egypt 4714.

 1:6 Joseph 3130 died 4191, and all 3605 his brothers 251 and all 3605 that generation 1755.

 1:7 But the sons 1121 of Israel 3478 were fruitful 6509 and increased 8317 greatly 8317, and multiplied 7235a, and became 6105a exceedingly 3966 mighty 6105a, so that the land 776 was filled 4390 with them.

 1:8 ¶ Now a new 2319 king 4428 arose 6965 over 5921 Egypt 4714, who 834 did not know 3045 Joseph 3130.

 1:9 He said 559 to his people 5971a, “Behold 2009, the people 5971a of the sons 1121 of Israel 3478 are more 7227a and mightier 6099 than 4480 we.

 1:10 “Come 3051, let us deal 2449 wisely 2449 with them, or 6435 else 6435 they will multiply 7235a and in the event 1961 3588 7122 of war 4421, they will also 1571 join 3254 themselves to those who 834 hate 8130 us, and fight 3898a against us and depart 5927 from the land 776.”

 1:11 So they appointed 7760 taskmasters 8269 4522 over 5921 them to afflict 6031a them with hard 5450 labor 5450. And they built 1129 for Pharaoh 6547 storage 4543 cities 5892b, Pithom 6619 and Raamses 7486.

 1:12 But the more 3512c they afflicted 6031a them, the more 3651 they multiplied 7235a and the more 3651 they spread 6555 out, so that they were in dread 6973 of the sons 1121 of Israel 3478.

 1:13 The Egyptians 4714 compelled the sons 1121 of Israel 3478 to labor 5647 rigorously 6531;

 1:14 and they made 4843 their lives 2425b bitter 4843 with hard 7186 labor 5656 in mortar 2563a and bricks 3843 and at all 3605 [kinds] of labor 5656 in the field 7704, all 3605 their labors 5656 which 834 they rigorously 6531 imposed 5647 on them.

 1:15 ¶ Then the king 4428 of Egypt 4714 spoke 559 to the Hebrew 5680 midwives 3205, one 259 of whom 834 was named 8034 Shiphrah 8236 and the other 8145 was named 8034 Puah 6326;

 1:16 and he said 559, “When you are helping the Hebrew 5680 women 5680 to give 3205 birth 3205 and see 7200 [them] upon the birthstool 70, if 518 it is a son 1121, then you shall put 4191 him to death 4191; but if 518 it is a daughter 1323, then she shall live 2421a.”

 1:17 But the midwives 3205 feared 3372a God 430, and did not do 6213a as the king 4428 of Egypt 4714 had commanded 1696 them, but let the boys 3206 live 2421a.

 1:18 So the king 4428 of Egypt 4714 called 7121 for the midwives 3205 and said 559 to them, “Why 4069 have you done 6213a this 2088 thing 1697, and let the boys 3206 live 2421a?”

 1:19 The midwives 3205 said 559 to Pharaoh 6547, “Because 3588 the Hebrew 5680 women 5680 are not as the Egyptian 4713 women 802; for they are vigorous 2422b and give 3205 birth 3205 before 2962 the midwife 3205 can 935 get 935 to them.”

 1:20 So God 430 was good 3190 to the midwives 3205, and the people 5971a multiplied 7235a, and became 6105a very 3966 mighty 6105a.

 1:21 Because 3588 the midwives 3205 feared 3372a God 430, He established 6213a households 1004 for them.

 1:22 Then Pharaoh 6547 commanded 6680 all 3605 his people 5971a, saying 559, “Every 3605 son 1121 who is born 3209 you are to cast 7993 into the Nile 2975, and every 3605 daughter 1323 you are to keep 2421a alive 2421a.”
