Exodus 21

1 Laws for menservants. 5 For the servant whose ear is bored. 7 For women servants. 12 For manslaughter. 16 For stealers of men. 17 For cursers of parents. 18 For smiters. 22 For a hurt by chance. 28 For an ox that goreth. 33 For him that is an occasion of harm.

 21:1 “Now these 428 are the ordinances 4941 which 834 you are to set 7760 before 6440 them:

 21:2 ¶ “If 3588 you buy 7069 a Hebrew 5680 slave 5650, he shall serve 5647 for six 8337a years 8141; but on the seventh 7637 he shall go 3318 out as a free 2670 man 2670 without 2600 payment 2600.

 21:3 “If 518 he comes 935 alone 1610, he shall go 3318 out alone 1610; if 518 he is the husband 1167 of a wife 802, then his wife 802 shall go 3318 out with him.

 21:4 “If 518 his master 113 gives 5414 him a wife 802, and she bears 3205 him sons 1121 or 176 daughters 1323, the wife 802 and her children 3206 shall belong 1961 to her master 113, and he shall go 3318 out alone 1610.

 21:5 “But if 518 the slave 5650 plainly 559 says 559, ‘I love 157 my master 113, my wife 802 and my children 1121; I will not go 3318 out as a free 2670 man 2670,’

 21:6 then his master 113 shall bring 5066 him to God 430, then he shall bring 5066 him to the door 1817 or 176 the doorpost 4201. And his master 113 shall pierce 7527 his ear 241 with an awl 4836; and he shall serve 5647 him permanently 5769.

 21:7 ¶ “If 3588 a man 376 sells 4376 his daughter 1323 as a female 519 slave 519, she is not to go 3318 free 3318 as the male 5650 slaves 5650 do 3318.

 21:8 “If 518 she is displeasing 7451a in the eyes 5869 of her master 113 who 834 designated 3259 her for himself, then he shall let her be redeemed 6299. He does not have 4910 authority 4910 to sell 4376 her to a foreign 5237 people 5971a because of his unfairness 898 to her.

 21:9 “If 518 he designates 3259 her for his son 1121, he shall deal 6213a with her according to the custom 4941 of daughters 1323.

 21:10 “If 518 he takes 3947 to himself another 312 woman 312, he may not reduce 1639 her food 7607, her clothing 3682, or her conjugal 5772b rights 5772b.

 21:11 “If 518 he will not do 6213a these 428 three 7969 [things] for her, then she shall go 3318 out for nothing 2600, without 369 [payment of] money 3701.

 21:12 ¶ “He who strikes 5221 a man 376 so that he dies 4191 shall surely 4191 be put 4191 to death 4191.

 21:13 “But if 834 he did not lie 6658a in wait 6658a [for him], but God 430 let 579 [him] fall 579 into his hand 3027, then I will appoint 7760 you a place 4725 to which 834 he may flee 5127.

 21:14 “If 3588, however, a man 376 acts 2102 presumptuously 2102 toward 5921 his neighbor 7453, so as to kill 2026 him craftily 6195, you are to take 3947 him [even] from My altar 4196, that he may die 4191.

 21:15 ¶ “He who strikes 5221 his father 1 or his mother 517 shall surely 4191 be put 4191 to death 4191.

 21:16 ¶ “He who kidnaps 1589 a man 376, whether he sells 4376 him or he is found 4672 in his possession 3027, shall surely 4191 be put 4191 to death 4191.

 21:17 ¶ “He who curses 7043 his father 1 or his mother 517 shall surely 4191 be put 4191 to death 4191.

 21:18 ¶ “If 3588 men 376 have 7378 a quarrel 7378 and one 376 strikes 5221 the other 7453 with a stone 68 or 176 with [his] fist 106, and he does not die 4191 but remains 5307 in bed 4904,

 21:19 if 518 he gets 6965 up and walks 1980 around 1980 outside 2351 on his staff 4938b, then he who struck 5221 him shall go 5352 unpunished 5352; he shall only 7534 pay 5414 for his loss 7674 of time 7674, and shall take 7495 care 7495 of him until he is completely 7495 healed 7495.

 21:20 ¶ “If 3588 a man 376 strikes 5221 his male 5650 or 176 female 519 slave 519 5650 with a rod 7626 and he dies 4191 at his hand 3027, he shall be punished 5358.

 21:21 “If 518, however 389, he survives 5975 a day 3117 or 176 two, no 3808 vengeance 5358 shall be taken 5358; for he is his property 3701.

 21:22 ¶ “If 3588 men 376 struggle 5327b with each other and strike 5062 a woman 802 with child 2030 so that she gives 3205 birth 3205 prematurely 3318, yet there is no 3808 injury 611, he shall surely 6064 be fined 6064 as the woman’s 802 husband 1167 may demand 7896 of him, and he shall pay 5414 as the judges 6414 [decide].

 21:23 “But if 518 there is [any further] injury 611, then you shall appoint 5414 [as a penalty] life 5315 for life 5315,

 21:24 eye 5869 for eye 5869, tooth 8127 for tooth 8127, hand 3027 for hand 3027, foot 7272 for foot 7272,

 21:25 burn 3555 for burn 3555, wound 6482 for wound 6482, bruise 2250 for bruise 2250.

 21:26 ¶ “If 3588 a man 376 strikes 5221 the eye 5869 of his male 5650 or 176 female 519 slave 519 5650, and destroys 7843 it, he shall let him go 7971 free 2670 on account 8478 of his eye 5869.

 21:27 “And if 518 he knocks 5307 out a tooth 8127 of his male 5650 or 176 female 519 slave 519 5650, he shall let him go 7971 free 2670 on account 8478 of his tooth 8127.

 21:28 ¶ “If 3588 an ox 7794 gores 5055 a man 376 or 176 a woman 802 to death 4191, the ox 7794 shall surely 5619 be stoned 5619 and its flesh 1320 shall not be eaten 398; but the owner 1167 of the ox 7794 shall go 5355a unpunished 5355a.

 21:29 “If 518, however, an ox 7794 was previously 8543 8032a in the habit 5056 of goring 5056 and its owner 1167 has been warned 5749b, yet he does not confine 8104 it and it kills 4191 a man 376 or 176 a woman 802, the ox 7794 shall be stoned 5619 and its owner 1167 also 1571 shall be put 4191 to death 4191.

 21:30 “If 518 a ransom 3724a is demanded 7896 of him, then he shall give 5414 for the redemption 6306b of his life 5315 whatever 3605 834 is demanded 7896 of him.

 21:31 “Whether 176 it gores 5055 a son 1121 or 176 a daughter 1323, it shall be done 6213a to him according to the same 2088 rule 4941.

 21:32 “If 518 the ox 7794 gores 5055 a male 5650 or 176 female 519 slave 519 5650, the owner shall give 5414 his [or her] master 113 thirty 7970 shekels 8255 of silver 3701, and the ox 7794 shall be stoned 5619.

 21:33 ¶ “If 3588 a man 376 opens 6605a a pit 953a, or 176 digs 3738a a pit 953a and does not cover 3680 it over, and an ox 7794 or 176 a donkey 2543 falls 5307 into it,

 21:34 the owner 1167 of the pit 953a shall make 7999a restitution 7999a; he shall give 7725 money 3701 to its owner 1167, and the dead 4191 [animal] shall become 1961 his.

 21:35 ¶ “If 3588 one man’s 376 ox 7794 hurts 5062 another’s 7453 so that it dies 4191, then they shall sell 4376 the live 2416a ox 7794 and divide 2673 its price 3701 equally; and also 1571 they shall divide 2673 the dead 4191 [ox].

 21:36 “Or 176 [if] it is known 3045 that the ox 7794 was previously 8543 8032a in the habit 5056 of goring 5056, yet its owner 1167 has not confined 8104 it, he shall surely 7999a pay 7999a ox 7794 for ox 7794, and the dead 4191 [animal] shall become 1961 his.
