Exodus 22

1 Of theft. 5 Of damage. 7 Of trespasses. 14 Of borrowing. 16 Of fornication. 18 Of witchcraft. 19 Of bestiality. 20 Of idolatry. 21 Of strangers, widows, and fatherless. 25 Of usury. 26 Of pledges. 28 Of reverence to magistrates. 29 Of the firstfruits.

 22:1 “If 3588 a man 376 steals 1589 an ox 7794 or 176 a sheep 7716 and slaughters 2873 it or 176 sells 4376 it, he shall pay 7999a five 2568 oxen 1241 for the ox 7794 and four 702 sheep 6629 for the sheep 7716.

 22:2 ¶ “If 518 the thief 1590 is caught 4672 while breaking 4290 in and is struck 5221 so that he dies 4191, there 369 will be no 369 bloodguiltiness 1818 on his account.

 22:3 “[But] if 518 the sun 8121 has risen 2224 on him, there will be bloodguiltiness 1818 on his account. He shall surely 7999a make 7999a restitution 7999a; if 518 he owns nothing 369, then he shall be sold 4376 for his theft 1591.

 22:4 “If 518 what 1591 he stole 1591 is actually 4672 found 4672 alive 2416a in his possession 3027, whether 4480 an ox 7794 or 5704 a donkey 2543 or 5704 a sheep 7716, he shall pay 7999a double 8147.

 22:5 ¶ “If 3588 a man 376 lets a field 7704 or 176 vineyard 3754 be grazed 1197b [bare] and lets 7971 his animal 1165 loose 7971 so that it grazes 1197b in another 312 man’s field 7704, he shall make 7999a restitution 7999a from the best 4315 of his own field 7704 and the best 4315 of his own vineyard 3754.

 22:6 ¶ “If 3588 a fire 784 breaks 3318 out and spreads 4672 to thorn 6975 bushes 6975, so that stacked 1430a grain or 176 the standing 7054 grain 7054 or 176 the field 7704 [itself] is consumed 398, he who started 1197a the fire 1200 shall surely 7999a make 7999a restitution 7999a.

 22:7 ¶ “If 3588 a man 376 gives 5414 his neighbor 7453 money 3701 or 176 goods 3627 to keep 8104 [for him] and it is stolen 1589 from the man’s 376 house 1004, if 518 the thief 1590 is caught 4672, he shall pay 7999a double 8147.

 22:8 “If 518 the thief 1590 is not caught 4672, then the owner 1167 of the house 1004 shall appear 7126 before 413 the judges 430, [to] determine whether 518 3808 he laid 7971 his hands 3027 on his neighbor’s 7453 property 4399.

 22:9 “For every 3605 breach 6588 of trust 6588, [whether it is] for ox 7794, for donkey 2543, for sheep 7716, for clothing 8008, [or] for any 3605 lost 9 thing 9 about which 834 one says 559, ‘This 2088 is it,’ the case 1697 of both 8147 parties shall come 935 before 5704 the judges 430; he whom 834 the judges 430 condemn 7561 shall pay 7999a double 8147 to his neighbor 7453.

 22:10 ¶ “If 3588 a man 376 gives 5414 his neighbor 7453 a donkey 2543, an ox 7794, a sheep 7716, or 176 any 3605 animal 929 to keep 8104 [for him], and it dies 4191 or 176 is hurt 7665 or 176 is driven 7617 away 7617 while no 369 one 369 is looking 7200,

 22:11 an oath 7621 before the LORD 3068 shall be made 1961 by the two 8147 of them that he has not laid 7971 hands 3027 on his neighbor’s 7453 property 4399; and its owner 1167 shall accept 3947 [it], and he shall not make 7999a restitution 7999a.

 22:12 “But if 518 it is actually 1589 stolen 1589 from him, he shall make 7999a restitution 7999a to its owner 1167.

 22:13 “If 518 it is all torn 2963 to pieces 2963, let him bring 935 it as evidence 5707; he shall not make 7999a restitution 7999a for what 2966 has been torn 2966 to pieces.

 22:14 ¶ “If 3588 a man 376 borrows 7592 [anything] from his neighbor 7453, and it is injured 7665 or 176 dies 4191 while its owner 1167 is not with it, he shall make 7999a full 7999a restitution 7999a.

 22:15 “If 518 its owner 1167 is with it, he shall not make 7999a restitution 7999a; if 518 it is hired 7916, it came 935 for its hire 7939.

 22:16 ¶ “If 3588 a man 376 seduces 6601b a virgin 1330 who 834 is not engaged 781, and lies 7901 with her, he must pay 4117 a dowry 4117 for her [to be] his wife 802.

 22:17 “If 518 her father 1 absolutely 3985 refuses 3985 to give 5414 her to him, he shall pay 8254 money 3701 equal to the dowry 4119 for virgins 1330.

 22:18 ¶ “You shall not allow a sorceress 3784 to live 2421a.

 22:19 ¶ “Whoever 3605 lies 7901 with an animal 929 shall surely 4191 be put 4191 to death 4191.

 22:20 ¶ “He who sacrifices 2076 to any god 430, other 1115 than 1115 to the LORD 3068 alone 905, shall be utterly 2763a destroyed 2763a.

 22:21 ¶ “You shall not wrong 3238 a stranger 1616 or oppress 3905 him, for you were strangers 1616 in the land 776 of Egypt 4714.

 22:22 “You shall not afflict 6031a any 3605 widow 490 or orphan 3490.

 22:23 “If 518 you afflict 6031a him at all 6031a, [and] if 518 he does cry 6817 out to Me, I will surely 8085 hear 8085 his cry 6818;

 22:24 and My anger 639 will be kindled 2734, and I will kill 2026 you with the sword 2719, and your wives 802 shall become 1961 widows 490 and your children 1121 fatherless 3490.

 22:25 ¶ “If 518 you lend 3867b money 3701 to My people 5971a, to the poor 6041 among 5973 you, you are not to act 1961 as a creditor 5383 to him; you shall not charge 7760 5921 him interest 5392.

 22:26 “If 518 you ever 2254a take 2254a your neighbor’s 7453 cloak 8008 as a pledge 2254a, you are to return 7725 it to him before 5704 the sun 8121 sets 935,

 22:27 for that is his only 905 covering 3682; it is his cloak 8071 for his body 5785. What 4100 else shall he sleep 7901 in? And it shall come 1961 about that when 3588 he cries 6817 out to Me, I will hear 8085 [him], for I am gracious 2587.

 22:28 ¶ “You shall not curse 7043 God 430, nor 3808 curse 779 a ruler 5387a of your people 5971a.

 22:29 ¶ “You shall not delay 309 [the offering from] your harvest 4395 and your vintage 1831. The firstborn 1060 of your sons 1121 you shall give 5414 to Me.

 22:30 “You shall do 6213a the same 3651 with your oxen 7794 [and] with your sheep 6629. It shall be with its mother 517 seven 7651 days 3117; on the eighth 8066 day 3117 you shall give 5414 it to Me.

 22:31 ¶ “You shall be holy 6944 men 376 to Me, therefore you shall not eat 398 [any] flesh 1320 torn 2966 to pieces in the field 7704; you shall throw 7993 it to the dogs 3611.
