1 Samuel 1

1 Elkanah a Levite having two wives, worshippeth yearly at Shiloh. 4 He cherisheth Hannah, though barren, and provoked by Peninah. 9 Hannah in grief prayeth for a child. 12 Eli first rebuking her, afterwards blesseth her. 19 Hannah having born Samuel, stayeth at home till he be weaned. 24 She presenteth him, according to her vow, to the LORD.

 1:1 Now there 8033 was a certain 259 man 376 from Ramathaim-zophim 7436 from the hill 2022 country 2022 of Ephraim 669, and his name 8034 was Elkanah 511 the son 1121 of Jeroham 3395, the son 1121 of Elihu 453, the son 1121 of Tohu 8459, the son 1121 of Zuph 6689, an Ephraimite 673.

 1:2 He had two 8147 wives 802: the name 8034 of one 259 was Hannah 2584 and the name 8034 of the other 8145 Peninnah 6444; and Peninnah 6444 had 1961 children 3206, but Hannah 2584 had 369 no 369 children 3206.

 1:3 ¶ Now this 1931 man 376 would go 5927 up from his city 5892b yearly 3117 to worship 7812 and to sacrifice 2076 to the LORD 3068 of hosts 6635 in Shiloh 7887. And the two 8147 sons 1121 of Eli 5941, Hophni 2652 and Phinehas 6372, were priests 3548 to the LORD 3068 there 8033.

 1:4 When the day 3117 came 1961 that Elkanah 511 sacrificed 2076, he would give 5414 portions 4490 to Peninnah 6444 his wife 802 and to all 3605 her sons 1121 and her daughters 1323;

 1:5 but to Hannah 2584 he would give 5414 a double 639 portion 4490, for he loved 157 Hannah 2584, but the LORD 3068 had closed 5462 her womb 7358.

 1:6 Her rival 6869b, however, would provoke 3707 her bitterly 1571 3708a to irritate 7481 her, because 3588 the LORD 3068 had closed 5462 her womb 7358.

 1:7 It happened 6213a year 8141 after year 8141, as often 1767 as she went 5927 up to the house 1004 of the LORD 3068, she would provoke 3707 her; so she wept 1058 and would not eat 398.

 1:8 Then Elkanah 511 her husband 376 said 559 to her, “Hannah 2584, why 4100 do you weep 1058 and why 4100 do you not eat 398 and why 4100 is your heart 3824 sad 7489a? Am I not better 2896a to you than 4480 ten 6235 sons 1121?”

 1:9 ¶ Then Hannah 2584 rose 6965 after 310 eating 398 and drinking 8354 in Shiloh 7887. Now Eli 5941 the priest 3548 was sitting 3427 on the seat 3678 by the doorpost 4201 of the temple 1964 of the LORD 3068.

 1:10 She, greatly 4751 distressed 4751, prayed 6419 to the LORD 3068 and wept 1058 bitterly 1058.

 1:11 She made 5087 a vow 5088 and said 559, “O LORD 3068 of hosts 6635, if 518 You will indeed 7200 look 7200 on the affliction 6040a of Your maidservant 519 and remember 2142 me, and not forget 7911 Your maidservant 519, but will give 5414 Your maidservant 519 a son 2233 376, then I will give 5414 him to the LORD 3068 all 3605 the days 3117 of his life 2425b, and a razor 4177a shall never 3808 come 5927 on his head 7218.”

 1:12 ¶ Now it came 1961 about, as she continued 7235a praying 6419 before 6440 the LORD 3068, that Eli 5941 was watching 8104 her mouth 6310.

 1:13 As for Hannah 2584, she was speaking 1696 in her heart 3820, only 7534 her lips 8193 were moving 5128, but her voice 6963 was not heard 8085. So Eli 5941 thought 2803 she was drunk 7910.

 1:14 Then Eli 5941 said 559 to her, “How 4970 long 5704 4970 will you make 7937 yourself drunk 7937? Put 5493 away 5493 your wine 3196 from you.”

 1:15 But Hannah 2584 replied 6030a, “No 369, my lord 113, I am a woman 802 oppressed 7186 in spirit 7307; I have drunk 8354 neither 3808 wine 3196 nor 3808 strong 7941 drink 7941, but I have poured 8210 out my soul 5315 before 6440 the LORD 3068.

 1:16 “Do not consider 5414 your maidservant 519 as a worthless 1100 woman 1323, for I have spoken 1696 until 5704 now 2008 out of my great 7230 concern 7879 and provocation 3708a.”

 1:17 Then Eli 5941 answered 6030a and said 559, “Go 1980 in peace 7965; and may the God 430 of Israel 3478 grant 5414 your petition 7596 that you have asked 7592 of Him.”

 1:18 She said 559, “Let your maidservant 8198 find 4672 favor 2580 in your sight 5869.” So the woman 802 went 1980 her way 1870 and ate 398, and her face 6440 was no 3808 longer 5750 [sad].

 1:19 ¶ Then they arose 7925 early 7925 in the morning 1242 and worshiped 7812 before 6440 the LORD 3068, and returned 7725 935 again 7725 to their house 1004 in Ramah 7414. And Elkanah 511 had 3045 relations 3045 with Hannah 2584 his wife 802, and the LORD 3068 remembered 2142 her.

 1:20 It came 1961 about in due 8622 time 3117, after Hannah 2584 had conceived 2029, that she gave 3205 birth 3205 to a son 1121; and she named 7121 8034 him Samuel 8050, [saying], “Because 3588 I have asked 7592 him of the LORD 3068.”

 1:21 ¶ Then the man 376 Elkanah 511 went 5927 up with all 3605 his household 1004 to offer 2076 to the LORD 3068 the yearly 3117 sacrifice 2077 and [pay] his vow 5088.

 1:22 But Hannah 2584 did not go 5927 up, for she said 559 to her husband 376, “[I will not go up] until 5704 the child 5288 is weaned 1580; then I will bring 935 him, that he may appear 7200 before 6440 the LORD 3068 and stay 3427 there 8033 forever 5704 5769.”

 1:23 Elkanah 511 her husband 376 said 559 to her, “Do 6213a what 2896a seems best 2896a to you. Remain 3427 until 5704 you have weaned 1580 him; only 389 may the LORD 3068 confirm 6965 His word 1697.” So the woman 802 remained 3427 and nursed 3243 her son 1121 until 5704 she weaned 1580 him.

 1:24 Now when 3512c she had weaned 1580 him, she took 5927 him up with her, with a three-year-old 7969 bull 6499 and one 259 ephah 374 of flour 7058 and a jug 5035a of wine 3196, and brought 935 him to the house 1004 of the LORD 3068 in Shiloh 7887, although the child 5288 was young 5288.

 1:25 Then they slaughtered 7819 the bull 6499, and brought 935 the boy 5288 to Eli 5941.

 1:26 She said 559, “Oh 994a, my lord 113! As your soul 5315 lives 2416a, my lord 113, I am the woman 802 who stood 5324 here 2088 beside 5973 you, praying 6419 to the LORD 3068.

 1:27 “For this 2088 boy 5288 I prayed 6419, and the LORD 3068 has given 5414 me my petition 7596 which 834 I asked 7592 of Him.

 1:28 “So I have also 1571 dedicated 7592 him to the LORD 3068; as long 3605 3117 as he lives 1961 he is dedicated 7592 to the LORD 3068.” And he worshiped 7812 the LORD 3068 there 8033.
