1 Samuel 23

1 David, enquiring of the LORD by Abiathar, rescueth Keilah. 7 God shewing him the coming of Saul, and the treachery of the Keilites, he escapeth from Keilah. 14 In Ziph Jonathan cometh and comforteth him. 19 The Ziphites discover him to Saul. 25 At Maon he is rescued from Saul by the invasion of the Philistines. 29 He dwelleth at En-gedi.

 23:1 Then they told 5046 David 1732, saying 559, “Behold 2009, the Philistines 6430 are fighting 3898a against Keilah 7084 and are plundering 8154 the threshing 1637 floors 1637.”

 23:2 So David 1732 inquired 7592 of the LORD 3068, saying 559, “Shall I go 1980 and attack 5221 these 428 Philistines 6430?” And the LORD 3068 said 559 to David 1732, “Go 1980 and attack 5221 the Philistines 6430 and deliver 3467 Keilah 7084.”

 23:3 But David’s 1732 men 376 said 559 to him, “Behold 2009, we are afraid 3372a here 6311 in Judah 3063. How 637 much 637 3588 more 637 3588 then if 3588 we go 1980 to Keilah 7084 against 413 the ranks 4634 of the Philistines 6430?”

 23:4 Then David 1732 inquired 7592 of the LORD 3068 once 3254 5750 more 3254 5750. And the LORD 3068 answered 6030a him and said 559, “Arise 6965, go 3381 down 3381 to Keilah 7084, for I will give 5414 the Philistines 6430 into your hand 3027.”

 23:5 So David 1732 and his men 376 went 1980 to Keilah 7084 and fought 3898a with the Philistines 6430; and he led 5090a away 5090a their livestock 4735 and struck 5221 them with a great 1419 slaughter 4347. Thus David 1732 delivered 3467 the inhabitants 3427 of Keilah 7084.

 23:6 ¶ Now it came 1961 about, when Abiathar 54 the son 1121 of Ahimelech 288 fled 1272 to David 1732 at Keilah 7084, [that] he came 3381 down 3381 [with] an ephod 646 in his hand 3027.

 23:7 When it was told 5046 Saul 7586 that David 1732 had come 935 to Keilah 7084, Saul 7586 said 559, “God 430 has delivered 5235a him into my hand 3027, for he shut 5462 himself in by entering 935 a city 5892b with double gates 1817 and bars 1280.”

 23:8 So Saul 7586 summoned 8085 all 3605 the people 5971a for war 4421, to go 3381 down 3381 to Keilah 7084 to besiege 6696a David 1732 and his men 376.

 23:9 Now David 1732 knew 3045 that Saul 7586 was plotting 2790a evil 7463a against 5921 him; so he said 559 to Abiathar 54 the priest 3548, “Bring 5066 the ephod 646 here 5066.”

 23:10 Then David 1732 said 559, “O LORD 3068 God 430 of Israel 3478, Your servant 5650 has heard 8085 for certain 8085 that Saul 7586 is seeking 1245 to come 935 to Keilah 7084 to destroy 7843 the city 5892b on my account 5668.

 23:11 “Will the men 1167 of Keilah 7084 surrender 5462 me into his hand 3027? Will Saul 7586 come 3381 down 3381 just 3512c as Your servant 5650 has heard 8085? O LORD 3068 God 430 of Israel 3478, I pray 4994, tell 5046 Your servant 5650.” And the LORD 3068 said 559, “He will come 3381 down 3381.”

 23:12 Then David 1732 said 559, “Will the men 1167 of Keilah 7084 surrender 5462 me and my men 376 into the hand 3027 of Saul 7586?” And the LORD 3068 said 559, “They will surrender 5462 you.”

 23:13 Then David 1732 and his men 376, about six 8337a hundred 3967, arose 6965 and departed 3318 from Keilah 7084, and they went 1980 wherever 834 they could go 1980. When it was told 5046 Saul 7586 that David 1732 had escaped 4422 from Keilah 7084, he gave 2308 up the pursuit 3318.

 23:14 David 1732 stayed 3427 in the wilderness 4057b in the strongholds 4679, and remained 3427 in the hill 2022 country 2022 in the wilderness 4057b of Ziph 2128. And Saul 7586 sought 1245 him every 3605 day 3117, but God 430 did not deliver 5414 him into his hand 3027.

 23:15 ¶ Now David 1732 became 7200 aware 7200 that Saul 7586 had come 3318 out to seek 1245 his life 5315 while David 1732 was in the wilderness 4057b of Ziph 2128 at Horesh 2793.

 23:16 And Jonathan 3083, Saul’s 7586 son 1121, arose 6965 and went 1980 to David 1732 at Horesh 2793, and encouraged 2388 3027 him in God 430.

 23:17 Thus he said 559 to him, “Do not be afraid 3372a, because 3588 the hand 3027 of Saul 7586 my father 1 will not find 4672 you, and you will be king 4427a over 5921 Israel 3478 and I will be next 4932 to you; and Saul 7586 my father 1 knows 3045 that also 1571.”

 23:18 So the two 8147 of them made 3772 a covenant 1285 before 6440 the LORD 3068; and David 1732 stayed 3427 at Horesh 2793 while Jonathan 3083 went 1980 to his house 1004.

 23:19 ¶ Then Ziphites 2130 came 5927 up to Saul 7586 at Gibeah 1390, saying 559, “Is David 1732 not hiding 5641 with us in the strongholds 4679 at Horesh 2793, on the hill 1389 of Hachilah 2444, which 834 is on the south 3225 of Jeshimon 3452?

 23:20 “Now 6258 then, O king 4428, come 3381 down 3381 according to all 3605 the desire 185 of your soul 5315 to do 3381 so 3381; and our part [shall be] to surrender 5462 him into the king’s 4428 hand 3027.”

 23:21 Saul 7586 said 559, “May you be blessed 1288 of the LORD 3068, for you have had 2550 compassion 2550 on me.

 23:22 “Go 1980 now 4994, make 3559 more 5750 sure 3559, and investigate 3045 and see 7200 his place 4725 where 834 8033 his haunt 7272 is, [and] who 4310 has seen 7200 him there 8033; for I am told 559 that he is very 6191 cunning 6191.

 23:23 “So look 7200, and learn 3045 about 4480 all 3605 the hiding 4224b places 4224b where 834 8033 he hides 2244 himself and return 7725 to me with certainty 3559, and I will go 1980 with you; and if 518 he is in the land 776, I will search 2664 him out among all 3605 the thousands 505 of Judah 3063.”

 23:24 ¶ Then they arose 6965 and went 1980 to Ziph 2128 before 6440 Saul 7586. Now David 1732 and his men 376 were in the wilderness 4057b of Maon 4584, in the Arabah 6160 to the south 3225 of Jeshimon 3452.

 23:25 When Saul 7586 and his men 376 went 1980 to seek 1245 [him], they told 5046 David 1732, and he came 3381 down 3381 to the rock 5553 and stayed 3427 in the wilderness 4057b of Maon 4584. And when Saul 7586 heard 8085 [it], he pursued 7291 David 1732 in the wilderness 4057b of Maon 4584.

 23:26 Saul 7586 went 1980 on one 2088 side 6654 of the mountain 2022, and David 1732 and his men 376 on the other 2088 side 6654 of the mountain 2022; and David 1732 was hurrying 2648 to get 1980 away 1980 from Saul 7586, for Saul 7586 and his men 376 were surrounding 5849a David 1732 and his men 376 to seize 8610 them.

 23:27 But a messenger 4397 came 935 to Saul 7586, saying 559, “Hurry 4116 and come 1980, for the Philistines 6430 have made 6584 a raid 6584 on the land 776.”

 23:28 So Saul 7586 returned 7725 from pursuing 7291 David 1732 and went 1980 to meet 7122 the Philistines 6430; therefore 5921 3651 they called 7121 that place 4725 the Rock 5553 of Escape 4256.

 23:29 David 1732 went 5927 up from there 8033 and stayed 3427 in the strongholds 4679 of Engedi 5872.
