1 Samuel 18

1 Jonathan loveth David. 5 Saul envieth his praise, 10 seeketh to kill him in his fury, 12 feareth him for his good success, 17 offereth him his daughters for a snare. 22 David persuadeth to be the king's son in law, giveth two hundred foreskins of the Philistines for Michal's dowry. 28 Saul's hatred, and David's glory increaseth.

 18:1 Now it came 1961 about when he had finished 3615 speaking 1696 to Saul 7586, that the soul 5315 of Jonathan 3083 was knit 7194 to the soul 5315 of David 1732, and Jonathan 3083 loved 157 him as himself 5315.

 18:2 Saul 7586 took 3947 him that day 3117 and did not let 5414 him return 7725 to his father’s 1 house 1004.

 18:3 Then Jonathan 3083 made 3772 a covenant 1285 with David 1732 because he loved 157 him as himself 5315.

 18:4 Jonathan 3083 stripped 6584 himself of the robe 4598 that was on him and gave 5414 it to David 1732, with his armor 4055, including 5704 his sword 2719 and his bow 7198 and his belt 2290a.

 18:5 So David 1732 went 3318 out wherever 3605 834 Saul 7586 sent 7971 him, [and] prospered 7919a; and Saul 7586 set 7760 him over 5921 the men 376 of war 4421. And it was pleasing 3190 in the sight 5869 of all 3605 the people 5971a and also 1571 in the sight 5869 of Saul’s 7586 servants 5650.

 18:6 ¶ It happened 1961 as they were coming 935, when David 1732 returned 7725 from killing 5221 the Philistine 6430, that the women 802 came 3318 out of all 3605 the cities 5892b of Israel 3478, singing 7891 and dancing 4246, to meet 7122 King 4428 Saul 7586, with tambourines 8596, with joy 8057 and with musical 7991b instruments 7991b.

 18:7 The women 802 sang 6031b as they played 7832, and said 559, “Saul 7586 has slain 5221 his thousands 505, And David 1732 his ten 7233 thousands 7233.”

 18:8 Then Saul 7586 became 2734 very 3966 angry 2734, for this 2088 saying 1697 displeased 7489a 5869 him; and he said 559, “They have ascribed 5414 to David 1732 ten 7233 thousands 7233, but to me they have ascribed 5414 thousands 505. Now what more 5750 can he have but the kingdom 4410?”

 18:9 Saul 7586 looked 5870b at David 1732 with suspicion 5870b from that day 3117 on.

 18:10 ¶ Now it came 1961 about on the next 4283 day 4283 that an evil 7451a spirit 7307 from God 430 came 6743a mightily 6743a upon Saul 7586, and he raved 5012 in the midst 8432 of the house 1004, while David 1732 was playing 5059 [the harp] with his hand 3027, as usual 3117; and a spear 2595 [was] in Saul’s 7586 hand 3027.

 18:11 Saul 7586 hurled 2904 the spear 2595 for he thought 559, “I will pin 5221 David 1732 to the wall 7023.” But David 1732 escaped 5437 from his presence 6440 twice 6471.

 18:12 ¶ Now Saul 7586 was afraid 3372a of David 1732, for the LORD 3068 was with him but had departed 5493 from Saul 7586.

 18:13 Therefore Saul 7586 removed 5493 him from his presence 5973 and appointed 7760 him as his commander 8269 of a thousand 505; and he went 3318 out and came 935 in before 6440 the people 5971a.

 18:14 David 1732 was prospering 7919a in all 3605 his ways 1870 for the LORD 3068 [was] with him.

 18:15 When Saul 7586 saw 7200 that he was prospering 7919a greatly 3966, he dreaded 1481c him.

 18:16 But all 3605 Israel 3478 and Judah 3063 loved 157 David 1732, and he went 3318 out and came 935 in before 6440 them.

 18:17 ¶ Then Saul 7586 said 559 to David 1732, “Here 2009 is my older 1419 daughter 1323 Merab 4764; I will give 5414 her to you as a wife 802, only 389 be a valiant 2428 man 1121 for me and fight 3898a the LORD’S 3068 battles 4421.” For Saul 7586 thought 559, “My hand 3027 shall not be against him, but let the hand 3027 of the Philistines 6430 be against him.”

 18:18 But David 1732 said 559 to Saul 7586, “Who 4310 am I, and what 4310 is my life 2416a [or] my father’s 1 family 4940 in Israel 3478, that I should be the king’s 4428 son-in-law 2860a?”

 18:19 So it came 1961 about at the time 6256 when Merab 4764, Saul’s 7586 daughter 1323, should have been given 5414 to David 1732, that she was given 5414 to Adriel 5741 the Meholathite 4259 for a wife 802.

 18:20 ¶ Now Michal 4324, Saul’s 7586 daughter 1323, loved 157 David 1732. When they told 5046 Saul 7586, the thing 1697 was agreeable 3474 to him.

 18:21 Saul 7586 thought 559, “I will give 5414 her to him that she may become 1961 a snare 4170 to him, and that the hand 3027 of the Philistines 6430 may be against him.” Therefore Saul 7586 said 559 to David 1732, “For a second 8147 time 8147 you may be my son-in-law 2859 today 3117.”

 18:22 Then Saul 7586 commanded 6680 his servants 5650, “Speak 1696 to David 1732 secretly 3909, saying 559, ‘Behold 2009, the king 4428 delights 2654a in you, and all 3605 his servants 5650 love 157 you; now 6258 therefore, become 2859 the king’s 4428 son-in-law 2859.’”

 18:23 So Saul’s 7586 servants 5650 spoke 1696 these 428 words 1697 to David 1732. But David 1732 said 559, “Is it trivial 7043 in your sight 5869 to become 2859 the king’s 4428 son-in-law 2859, since I am 7326 a poor 7326 man 376 and lightly 7034 esteemed 7034?”

 18:24 The servants 5650 of Saul 7586 reported 5046 to him according to these 428 words 1697 [which] David 1732 spoke 1696.

 18:25 Saul 7586 then said 559, “Thus 3541 you shall say 559 to David 1732, ‘The king 4428 does not desire 2656 any dowry 4119 except 3588 a hundred 3967 foreskins 6190 of the Philistines 6430, to take 5358 vengeance 5358 on the king’s 4428 enemies 340.’” Now Saul 7586 planned 2803 to make David 1732 fall 5307 by the hand 3027 of the Philistines 6430.

 18:26 When his servants 5650 told 5046 David 1732 these 428 words 1697, it pleased 3474 5869 David 1732 to become 2859 the king’s 4428 son-in-law 2859. Before the days 3117 had expired 4390

 18:27 David 1732 rose 6965 up and went 1980, he and his men 376, and struck 5221 down 5221 two hundred 3967 men 376 among the Philistines 6430. Then David 1732 brought 935 their foreskins 6190, and they gave 4390 them in full 4390 number to the king 4428, that he might become 2859 the king’s 4428 son-in-law 2859. So Saul 7586 gave 5414 him Michal 4324 his daughter 1323 for a wife 802.

 18:28 When Saul 7586 saw 7200 and knew 3045 that the LORD 3068 was with David 1732, and [that] Michal 4324, Saul’s 7586 daughter 1323, loved 157 him,

 18:29 then Saul 7586 was even 3254 more 3254 5750 afraid 3372a of David 1732. Thus Saul 7586 was David’s 1732 enemy 340 continually 3605 3117.

 18:30 ¶ Then the commanders 8269 of the Philistines 6430 went 3318 out [to battle], and it happened 1961 as often 1767 as they went 3318 out, that David 1732 behaved 7919a himself more 4480 wisely 7919a than 4480 all 3605 the servants 5650 of Saul 7586. So his name 8034 was highly 3966 esteemed 3365.
