1995 New American Standard Bible (NASB)1 Samuel 251 Samuel dieth. 2 David in Paran sendeth to Nabal. 10 Provoked by Nabal's churlishness, he mindeth to destroy him. 14 Abigail understanding thereof, 18 taketh a present, 23 and by her wisdom 32 pacifieth David. 36 Nabal hearing thereof dieth. 39 David taketh Abigail and Ahinoam to be his wives. 44 Michal is given to Phalti. 25:1 Then Samuel 8050 died 4191; and all 3605 Israel 3478 gathered 6908 together and mourned 5594 for him, and buried 6912 him at his house 1004 in Ramah 7414. And David 1732 arose 6965 and went 3381 down 3381 to the wilderness 4057b of Paran 6290. 25:2 ¶ Now [there was] a man 376 in Maon 4584 whose business 4639 was in Carmel 3760; and the man 376 was very 3966 rich 1419, and he had three 7969 thousand 505 sheep 6629 and a thousand 505 goats 5795. And it came 1961 about while he was shearing 1494 his sheep 6629 in Carmel 3760 25:3 (now the man’s 376 name 8034 was Nabal 5037, and his wife’s 802 name 8034 was Abigail 26. And the woman 802 was intelligent 2896a 7922 and beautiful 3303 in appearance 8389, but the man 376 was harsh 7186 and evil 7451b in [his] dealings 4611, and he was a Calebite 3614), 25:4 that David 1732 heard 8085 in the wilderness 4057b that Nabal 5037 was shearing 1494 his sheep 6629. 25:5 So David 1732 sent 7971 ten 6235 young 5288 men 5288; and David 1732 said 559 to the young 5288 men 5288, “Go 5927 up to Carmel 3760, visit 935 413 Nabal 5037 and greet 7592 7965 him in my name 8034; 25:6 and thus 3541 you shall say 559, ‘Have a long life 2416a, peace 7965 be to you, and peace 7965 be to your house 1004, and peace 7965 be to all 3605 that you have. 25:7 ‘Now 6258 I have heard 8085 that you have shearers 1494; now 6258 your shepherds 7462a have been 1961 with us and we have not insulted 3637 them, nor 3808 have they missed 6485 anything 3972 all 3605 the days 3117 they were in Carmel 3760. 25:8 ‘Ask 7592 your young 5288 men 5288 and they will tell 5046 you. Therefore let [my] young 5288 men 5288 find 4672 favor 2580 in your eyes 5869, for we have come 935 on a festive 2896a day 3117. Please 4994 give 5414 whatever 834 you find 4672 at hand 3027 to your servants 5650 and to your son 1121 David 1732.’” 25:9 ¶ When David’s 1732 young 5288 men 5288 came 935, they spoke 1696 to Nabal 5037 according to all 3605 these 428 words 1697 in David’s 1732 name 8034; then they waited 5117. 25:10 But Nabal 5037 answered 6030a David’s 1732 servants 5650 and said 559, “Who 4310 is David 1732? And who 4310 is the son 1121 of Jesse 3448? There are many 7231 servants 5650 today 3117 who are each 376 breaking 6555 away 6555 from his master 113. 25:11 “Shall I then take 3947 my bread 3899 and my water 4325 and my meat 2878 that I have slaughtered 2873 for my shearers 1494, and give 5414 it to men 376 whose 834 origin 4480 2088 335 I do not know 3045?” 25:12 So David’s 1732 young 5288 men 5288 retraced 2015 their way 1870 and went 7725 back 7725; and they came 935 and told 5046 him according to all 3605 these 428 words 1697. 25:13 David 1732 said 559 to his men 376, “Each 376 [of you] gird 2296 on his sword 2719.” So each 376 man 376 girded 2296 on his sword 2719. And David 1732 also 1571 girded 2296 on his sword 2719, and about four 702 hundred 3967 men 376 went 5927 up behind 310 David 1732 while two hundred 3967 stayed 3427 with the baggage 3627. 25:14 ¶ But one 259 of the young 5288 men 5288 told 5046 Abigail 26, Nabal’s 5037 wife 802, saying 559, “Behold 2009, David 1732 sent 7971 messengers 4397 from the wilderness 4057b to greet 1288 our master 113, and he scorned 5860a them. 25:15 “Yet the men 376 were very 3966 good 2896a to us, and we were not insulted 3637, nor 3808 did we miss 6485 anything 3972 as long 3605 3117 as we went 1980 about with them, while we were in the fields 7704. 25:16 “They were a wall 2346 to us both 1571 by night 3915 and by day 3119, all 3605 the time 3117 we were with them tending 7462a the sheep 6629. 25:17 “Now 6258 therefore, know 3045 and consider 7200 what 4100 you should do 6213a, for evil 7463a is plotted 3615 against 413 our master 113 and against 5921 all 3605 his household 1004; and he is such a worthless 1100 man 1121 that no 4480 one can speak 1696 to him.” 25:18 ¶ Then Abigail 26 hurried 4116 and took 3947 two hundred 3967 [loaves] of bread 3899 and two 8147 jugs 5035a of wine 3196 and five 2568 sheep 6629 already prepared 6213a and five 2568 measures 5429 of roasted 7039 grain 7039 and a hundred 3967 clusters 6778 of raisins 6778 and two hundred 3967 cakes 1690 of figs 1690, and loaded 7760 [them] on donkeys 2543. 25:19 She said 559 to her young 5288 men 5288, “Go 5674a on before 6440 me; behold 2009, I am coming 935 after 310 you.” But she did not tell 5046 her husband 376 Nabal 5037. 25:20 It came 1961 about as she was riding 7392 on her donkey 2543 and coming 3381 down 3381 by the hidden 5643a part 5643a of the mountain 2022, that behold 2009, David 1732 and his men 376 were coming 3381 down 3381 toward 7122 her; so she met 6298 them. 25:21 Now David 1732 had said 559, “Surely 389 in vain 8267 I have guarded 8104 all 3605 that this 2088 [man] has in the wilderness 4057b, so that nothing 3808 3972 was missed 6485 of all 3605 that belonged to him; and he has returned 7725 me evil 7463a for good 2899b. 25:22 “May God 430 do 6213a so 3541 to the enemies 340 of David 1732, and more 3254 also 3541, if 518 by morning 1242 I leave 7604 [as much as] one male 8366 7023 of any 3605 who 834 belong to him.” 25:23 ¶ When Abigail 26 saw 7200 David 1732, she hurried 4116 and dismounted 3381 from her donkey 2543, and fell 5307 on her face 6440 before 639 David 1732 and bowed 7812 herself to the ground 776. 25:24 She fell 5307 at his feet 7272 and said 559, “On me alone 589, my lord 113, be the blame 5771. And please 4994 let your maidservant 519 speak 1696 to you, and listen 8085 to the words 1697 of your maidservant 519. 25:25 “Please 4994 do not let my lord 113 pay 7760 attention 3820 to this 2088 worthless 1100 man 376, Nabal 5037, for as his name 8034 is, so 3651 is he. Nabal 5037 is his name 8034 and folly 5039 is with him; but I your maidservant 519 did not see 7200 the young 5288 men 5288 of my lord 113 whom 834 you sent 7971. 25:26 ¶ “Now 6258 therefore, my lord 113, as the LORD 3068 lives 2416a, and as your soul 5315 lives 2416a, since 834 the LORD 3068 has restrained 4513 you from shedding 935 blood 1818, and from avenging 3467 yourself by your own hand 3027, now 6258 then let your enemies 340 and those who seek 1245 evil 7463a against 413 my lord 113, be as Nabal 5037. 25:27 “Now 6258 let this 2088 gift 1293 which 834 your maidservant 8198 has brought 935 to my lord 113 be given 5414 to the young 5288 men 5288 who accompany 1980 7272 my lord 113. 25:28 “Please 4994 forgive 5375 the transgression 6588 of your maidservant 519; for the LORD 3068 will certainly 6213a make 6213a for my lord 113 an enduring 539 house 1004, because 3588 my lord 113 is fighting 3898a the battles 4421 of the LORD 3068, and evil 7463a will not be found 4672 in you all 4480 your days 3117. 25:29 “Should anyone 120 rise 6965 up to pursue 7291 you and to seek 1245 your life 5315, then the life 5315 of my lord 113 shall be bound 6887a in the bundle 6872a of the living 2416a with the LORD 3068 your God 430; but the lives 5315 of your enemies 340 He will sling 7049a out as from the hollow 3709 of a sling 7050a. 25:30 “And when 3588 the LORD 3068 does 6213a for my lord 3068 according to all 3605 the good 2899b that He has spoken 1696 concerning 5921 you, and appoints 6680 you ruler 5057 over 5921 Israel 3478, 25:31 this 2088 will not cause 1961 grief 6330 or a troubled 4383 heart 3820 to my lord 113, both by having shed 8210 blood 1818 without 2600 cause 2600 and by my lord 113 having avenged 3467 himself. When the LORD 3068 deals 3190 well 3190 with my lord 113, then remember 2142 your maidservant 519.” 25:32 ¶ Then David 1732 said 559 to Abigail 26, “Blessed 1288 be the LORD 3068 God 430 of Israel 3478, who 834 sent 7971 you this 2088 day 3117 to meet 7122 me, 25:33 and blessed 1288 be your discernment 2940, and blessed 1288 be you, who 834 have kept 3607 me this 2088 day 3117 from bloodshed 1818 and from avenging 3467 myself by my own hand 3027. 25:34 “Nevertheless 199, as the LORD 3068 God 430 of Israel 3478 lives 2416a, who 834 has restrained 4513 me from harming 7489a you, unless 3588 3884a you had come 935 quickly 4116 to meet 7122 me, surely 3588 518 there would not have been left 3498 to Nabal 5037 until 5704 the morning 1242 light 216 [as much as] one male 8366 7023.” 25:35 So David 1732 received 3947 from her hand 3027 what 834 she had brought 935 him and said 559 to her, “Go 5927 up to your house 1004 in peace 7965. See 7200, I have listened 8085 to you and granted 5375 your request 6440.” 25:36 ¶ Then Abigail 26 came 935 to Nabal 5037, and behold 2009, he was holding a feast 4960 in his house 1004, like the feast 4960 of a king 4428. And Nabal’s 5037 heart 3820 was merry 2895 within 5921 him, for he was very 5704 3966 drunk 7910; so she did not tell 5046 him anything 1697 at all 6996b 1419 until 5704 the morning 1242 light 216. 25:37 But in the morning 1242, when the wine 3196 had gone 3318 out of Nabal 5037, his wife 802 told 5046 him these 428 things 1697, and his heart 3820 died 4191 within 7130 him so that he became 1961 [as] a stone 68. 25:38 About ten 6235 days 3117 later, the LORD 3068 struck 5062 Nabal 5037 and he died 4191. 25:39 ¶ When David 1732 heard 8085 that Nabal 5037 was dead 4191, he said 559, “Blessed 1288 be the LORD 3068, who 834 has pleaded 7378 the cause 7379 of my reproach 2781 from the hand 3027 of Nabal 5037 and has kept 2820 back 2820 His servant 5650 from evil 7463a. The LORD 3068 has also returned 7725 the evildoing 7463a of Nabal 5037 on his own head 7218.” Then David 1732 sent 7971 a proposal 1696 to Abigail 26, to take 3947 her as his wife 802. 25:40 When the servants 5650 of David 1732 came 935 to Abigail 26 at Carmel 3760, they spoke 1696 to her, saying 559, “David 1732 has sent 7971 us to you to take 3947 you as his wife 802.” 25:41 She arose 6965 and bowed 7812 with her face 639 to the ground 776 and said 559, “Behold 2009, your maidservant 519 is a maid 8189 to wash 7364 the feet 7272 of my lord’s 113 servants 5650.” 25:42 Then Abigail 26 quickly 4116 arose 6965, and rode 7392 on a donkey 2543, with her five 2568 maidens 5291 who attended 1980 7272 her; and she followed 1980 310 the messengers 4397 of David 1732 and became 1961 his wife 802. 25:43 ¶ David 1732 had also taken 3947 Ahinoam 293 of Jezreel 3157, and they both 1571 8147 became 1961 his wives 802. 25:44 ¶ Now Saul 7586 had given 5414 Michal 4324 his daughter 1323, David’s 1732 wife 802, to Palti 6406 the son 1121 of Laish 3919b, who 834 was from Gallim 1554. |
