1 Samuel 17

1 The armies of the Israelites and Philistines being ready to battle, 4 Goliath cometh proudly forth to challenge a combat. 12 David, sent by his father to visit his brethren, taketh the challenge. 28 Eliab chideth him. 30 He is brought to Saul. 32 He sheweth the reason of his confidence. 38 Without armour, armed with faith, he slayeth the giant. 55 Saul taketh notice of David.

 17:1 Now the Philistines 6430 gathered 622 their armies 4264 for battle 4421; and they were gathered 622 at Socoh 7755 which 834 belongs to Judah 3063, and they camped 2583 between 996 Socoh 7755 and Azekah 5825, in Ephes-dammim 658b.

 17:2 Saul 7586 and the men 376 of Israel 3478 were gathered 622 and camped 2583 in the valley 6010 of Elah 424, and drew 6186a up in battle 4421 array to encounter 7122 the Philistines 6430.

 17:3 The Philistines 6430 stood 5975 on the mountain 2022 on one 2088 side 2088 while Israel 3478 stood 5975 on the mountain 2022 on the other 2088 side 2088, with the valley 1516 between 996 them.

 17:4 Then a champion 376 996 came 3318 out from the armies 4264 of the Philistines 6430 named 8034 Goliath 1555, from Gath 1661, whose height 1363 was six 8337a cubits 520 and a span 2239.

 17:5 [He had] a bronze 5178 helmet 3553 on his head 7218, and he was clothed 3847 with scale-armor 7193 which weighed 4948 five 2568 thousand 505 shekels 8255 of bronze 5178.

 17:6 [He] also [had] bronze 5178 greaves 4697 on his legs 7272 and a bronze 5178 javelin 3591 [slung] between 996 his shoulders 3802.

 17:7 The shaft 2671 of his spear 2595 was like a weaver’s 707 beam 4500, and the head 3852 of his spear 2595 [weighed] six 8337a hundred 3967 shekels 8255 of iron 1270; his shield-carrier 6793c 5375 also walked 1980 before 6440 him.

 17:8 He stood 5975 and shouted 7121 to the ranks 4634 of Israel 3478 and said 559 to them, “Why 4100 do you come 3318 out to draw 6186a up in battle 4421 array? Am I not the Philistine 6430 and you servants 5650 of Saul 7586? Choose 1262 a man 376 for yourselves and let him come 3381 down 3381 to me.

 17:9 “If 518 he is able 3201 to fight 3898a with me and kill 5221 me, then we will become 1961 your servants 5650; but if 518 I prevail 3201 against him and kill 5221 him, then you shall become 1961 our servants 5650 and serve 5647 us.”

 17:10 Again the Philistine 6430 said 559, “I defy 2778a the ranks 4634 of Israel 3478 this 2088 day 3117; give 5414 me a man 376 that we may fight 3898a together 3162.”

 17:11 When Saul 7586 and all 3605 Israel 3478 heard 8085 these 428 words 1697 of the Philistine 6430, they were dismayed 2865 and greatly 3966 afraid 3372a.

 17:12 ¶ Now David 1732 was the son 1121 of the Ephrathite 673 of Bethlehem 1035 in Judah 3063, whose name 8034 was Jesse 3448, and he had eight 8083 sons 1121. And Jesse was old 2204 in the days 3117 of Saul 7586, advanced 935 [in years] among men 376.

 17:13 The three 7969 older 1419 sons 1121 of Jesse 3448 had gone 1980 after 310 Saul 7586 to the battle 4421. And the names 8034 of his three 7969 sons 1121 who 834 went 1980 to the battle 4421 were Eliab 446 the firstborn 1060, and the second 4932 to him Abinadab 41, and the third 7992 Shammah 8048.

 17:14 David 1732 was the youngest 6996a. Now the three 7969 oldest 1419 followed 1980 310 Saul 7586,

 17:15 but David 1732 went 1980 7725 back 7725 and forth from Saul 7586 to tend 7462a his father’s 1 flock 6629 at Bethlehem 1035.

 17:17 ¶ Then Jesse 3448 said 559 to David 1732 his son 1121, “Take 3947 now 4994 for your brothers 251 an ephah 374 of this 2088 roasted 7039 grain 7039 and these 2088 ten 6235 loaves 3899 and run 7323 to the camp 4264 to your brothers 251.

 17:18 “Bring 935 also these 428 ten 6235 cuts 2757 of cheese 2461 to the commander 8269 of [their] thousand 505, and look 6485 into the welfare 7965 of your brothers 251, and bring 3947 back news 6161 of them.

 17:19 “For Saul 7586 and they and all 3605 the men 376 of Israel 3478 are in the valley 6010 of Elah 424, fighting 3898a with the Philistines 6430.”

 17:20 ¶ So David 1732 arose 7925 early 7925 in the morning 1242 and left 5203 the flock 6629 with a keeper 8104 and took 5375 [the supplies] and went 1980 as Jesse 3448 had commanded 6680 him. And he came 935 to the circle 4570 of the camp 4570 while the army 2428 was going 3318 out in battle 4634 array 4634 shouting 7321 the war 4421 cry 7321.

 17:21 Israel 3478 and the Philistines 6430 drew 6186a up in battle 6186a array, army 4634 against 7122 army 4634.

 17:22 Then David 1732 left 5203 his baggage 3627 in the care 3027 of the baggage 3627 keeper 8104, and ran 7323 to the battle 4634 line 4634 and entered 935 in order to greet 7592 7965 his brothers 251.

 17:23 As he was talking 1696 with them, behold 2009, the champion 376 996, the Philistine 6430 from Gath 1661 named 8034 Goliath 1555, was coming 5927 up from the army 4634 of the Philistines 6430, and he spoke 1696 these 428 same 428 words 1697; and David 1732 heard 8085 [them].

 17:24 ¶ When all 3605 the men 376 of Israel 3478 saw 7200 the man 376, they fled 5127 from him and were greatly 3966 afraid 3372a.

 17:25 The men 376 of Israel 3478 said 559, “Have you seen 7200 this 2088 man 376 who is coming 5927 up? Surely 3588 he is coming 5927 up to defy 2778a Israel 3478. And it will be that the king 4428 will enrich 6238 the man 376 who 834 kills 5221 him with great 1419 riches 6239 and will give 5414 him his daughter 1323 and make 6213a his father’s 1 house 1004 free 2670 in Israel 3478.”

 17:26 ¶ Then David 1732 spoke 559 to the men 376 who were standing 5975 by him, saying 559, “What 4100 will be done 6213a for the man 376 who 834 kills 5221 this 1975 Philistine 6430 and takes 5493 away 5493 the reproach 2781 from Israel 3478? For who 4310 is this 2088 uncircumcised 6189 Philistine 6430, that he should taunt 2778a the armies 4634 of the living 2416a God 430?”

 17:27 The people 5971a answered 559 him in accord with this 2088 word 1697, saying 559, “Thus 3541 it will be done 6213a for the man 376 who 834 kills 5221 him.”

 17:28 ¶ Now Eliab 446 his oldest 1419 brother 251 heard 8085 when he spoke 1696 to the men 376; and Eliab’s 446 anger 639 burned 2734 against David 1732 and he said 559, “Why 4100 have you come 3381 down 3381? And with whom 4310 have you left 5203 those 2007 few 4592 sheep 6629 in the wilderness 4057b? I know 3045 your insolence 2087 and the wickedness 7455 of your heart 3824; for you have come 3381 down 3381 in order 4616 to see 7200 the battle 4421.”

 17:29 But David 1732 said 559, “What 4100 have I done 6213a now 6258? Was it not just a question 1697?”

 17:30 Then he turned 5437 away 5437 681 from him to another 312 and said 559 the same 2088 thing 1697; and the people 5971a answered 7725 the same 1697 thing 1697 as before 7223.

 17:31 ¶ When the words 1697 which 834 David 1732 spoke 1696 were heard 8085, they told 5046 [them] to Saul 7586, and he sent 3947 for him.

 17:32 David 1732 said 559 to Saul 7586, “Let no 408 man’s 120 heart 3820 fail 5307 on account 5921 of him; your servant 5650 will go 1980 and fight 3898a with this 2088 Philistine 6430.”

 17:33 Then Saul 7586 said 559 to David 1732, “You are not able 3201 to go 1980 against 413 this 2088 Philistine 6430 to fight 3898a with him; for you are [but] a youth 5271 while he has been a warrior 4421 from his youth 5271.”

 17:34 But David 1732 said 559 to Saul 7586, “Your servant 5650 was tending 7462a his father’s 1 sheep 6629. When a lion 738 or a bear 1677 came 935 and took 5375 a lamb 7716 from the flock 5739,

 17:35 I went 3318 out after 310 him and attacked 5221 him, and rescued 5337 [it] from his mouth 6310; and when he rose 6965 up against 5921 me, I seized 2388 [him] by his beard 2206 and struck 5221 him and killed 4191 him.

 17:36 “Your servant 5650 has killed 5221 both 1571 the lion 738 and the bear 1677; and this 2088 uncircumcised 6189 Philistine 6430 will be like one 259 of them, since 3588 he has taunted 2778a the armies 4634 of the living 2416a God 430.”

 17:37 And David 1732 said 559, “The LORD 3068 who 834 delivered 5337 me from the paw 3027 of the lion 738 and from the paw 3027 of the bear 1677, He will deliver 5337 me from the hand 3027 of this 2088 Philistine 6430.” And Saul 7586 said 559 to David 1732, “Go 1980, and may the LORD 3068 be with you.”

 17:38 Then Saul 7586 clothed 3847 David 1732 with his garments 4055 and put 5414 a bronze 5178 helmet 6959 on his head 7218, and he clothed 3847 him with armor 8302.

 17:39 David 1732 girded 2296 his sword 2719 over 4480 5921 his armor 4055 and tried 2974 to walk 1980, for he had not tested 5254 [them]. So David 1732 said 559 to Saul 7586, “I cannot 3201 3808 go 1980 with these 428, for I have not tested 5254 [them].” And David 1732 took 5493 them off 4480 5921.

 17:40 He took 3947 his stick 4731 in his hand 3027 and chose 977 for himself five 2568 smooth 2512 stones 68 from the brook 5158a, and put 7760 them in the shepherd’s 7462a bag 3627 which 834 he had, even in [his] pouch 3219, and his sling 7050a was in his hand 3027; and he approached 5066 the Philistine 6430.

 17:41 ¶ Then the Philistine 6430 came 1980 on and approached 7126 David 1732, with the shield-bearer 6793c 5375 in front 6440 of him.

 17:42 When the Philistine 6430 looked 5027 and saw 7200 David 1732, he disdained 959 him; for he was [but] a youth 5288, and ruddy 132, with a handsome 3303 appearance 4758.

 17:43 The Philistine 6430 said 559 to David 1732, “Am I a dog 3611, that you come 935 to me with sticks 4731?” And the Philistine 6430 cursed 7043 David 1732 by his gods 430.

 17:44 The Philistine 6430 also said 559 to David 1732, “Come 1980 to me, and I will give 5414 your flesh 1320 to the birds 5775 of the sky 8064 and the beasts 929 of the field 7704.”

 17:45 Then David 1732 said 559 to the Philistine 6430, “You come 935 to me with a sword 2719, a spear 2595, and a javelin 3591, but I come 935 to you in the name 8034 of the LORD 3068 of hosts 6635, the God 430 of the armies 4634 of Israel 3478, whom 834 you have taunted 2778a.

 17:46 “This 2088 day 3117 the LORD 3068 will deliver 5462 you up into my hands 3027, and I will strike 5221 you down 5221 and remove 5493 your head 7218 from you. And I will give 5414 the dead 6297 bodies 6297 of the army 4264 of the Philistines 6430 this 2088 day 3117 to the birds 5775 of the sky 8064 and the wild 2421b beasts 2421b of the earth 776, that all 3605 the earth 776 may know 3045 that there 3426 is a God 430 in Israel 3478,

 17:47 and that all 3605 this 2088 assembly 6951 may know 3045 that the LORD 3068 does not deliver 3467 by sword 2719 or by spear 2595; for the battle 4421 is the LORD’S 3068 and He will give 5414 you into our hands 3027.”

 17:48 ¶ Then it happened 1961 when 3588 the Philistine 6430 rose 6965 and came 1980 and drew 7126 near 7126 to meet 7122 David 1732, that David 1732 ran 7323 quickly 4116 toward the battle 4634 line 4634 to meet 7122 the Philistine 6430.

 17:49 And David 1732 put 7971 his hand 3027 into his bag 3627 and took 3947 from it a stone 68 and slung 7049a [it], and struck 5221 the Philistine 6430 on his forehead 4696. And the stone 68 sank 2883 into his forehead 4696, so that he fell 5307 on his face 6440 to the ground 776.

 17:50 ¶ Thus David 1732 prevailed 2388 over 4480 the Philistine 6430 with a sling 7050a and a stone 68, and he struck 5221 the Philistine 6430 and killed 4191 him; but there 369 was no 369 sword 2719 in David’s 1732 hand 3027.

 17:51 Then David 1732 ran 7323 and stood 5975 over 413 the Philistine 6430 and took 3947 his sword 2719 and drew 8025 it out of its sheath 8593 and killed 4191 him, and cut 3772 off 3772 his head 7218 with it. When the Philistines 6430 saw 7200 that their champion 1368 was dead 4191, they fled 5127.

 17:52 The men 376 of Israel 3478 and Judah 3063 arose 6965 and shouted 7321 and pursued 7291 the Philistines 6430 as far 5704 as the valley 1516, and to the gates 8179 of Ekron 6138. And the slain 2491a Philistines 6430 lay 5307 along the way 1870 to Shaaraim 8189, even to Gath 1661 and Ekron 6138.

 17:53 The sons 1121 of Israel 3478 returned 7725 from chasing 1814 the Philistines 6430 and plundered 8155 their camps 4264.

 17:54 Then David 1732 took 3947 the Philistine’s 6430 head 7218 and brought 935 it to Jerusalem 3389, but he put 7760 his weapons 3627 in his tent 168.

 17:55 ¶ Now when Saul 7586 saw 7200 David 1732 going 3318 out against 7122 the Philistine 6430, he said 559 to Abner 74 the commander 8269 of the army 6635, “Abner 74, whose 4310 son 1121 is this 2088 young 5288 man 5288?” And Abner 74 said 559, “By your life 5315, O king 4428, I do not know 3045.”

 17:56 The king 4428 said 559, “You inquire 7592 whose 4310 son 1121 the youth 5958 is.”

 17:57 So when David 1732 returned 7725 from killing 5221 the Philistine 6430, Abner 74 took 3947 him and brought 935 him before 6440 Saul 7586 with the Philistine’s 6430 head 7218 in his hand 3027.

 17:58 Saul 7586 said 559 to him, “Whose 4310 son 1121 are you, young 5288 man 5288?” And David 1732 answered 559, “[I am] the son 1121 of your servant 5650 Jesse 3448 the Bethlehemite 1022.”
