2 Chronicles 23

1 Jehoiada, having set things in order, maketh Joash king. 12 Athaliah is slain. 16 Jehoiada restoreth the worship of God.

 23:1 Now in the seventh 7637 year 8141 Jehoiada 3077 strengthened 2388 himself, and took 3947 captains 8269 of hundreds 3967: Azariah 5838 the son 1121 of Jeroham 3395, Ishmael 3458 the son 1121 of Johanan 3076, Azariah 5838 the son 1121 of Obed 5744, Maaseiah 4641 the son 1121 of Adaiah 5718, and Elishaphat 478 the son 1121 of Zichri 2147, [and they entered] into a covenant 1285 with him.

 23:2 They went 5437 throughout 5437 Judah 3063 and gathered 6908 the Levites 3881 from all 3605 the cities 5892b of Judah 3063, and the heads 7218 of the fathers’ 1 [households] of Israel 3478, and they came 935 to Jerusalem 3389.

 23:3 Then all 3605 the assembly 6951 made 3772 a covenant 1285 with the king 4428 in the house 1004 of God 430. And Jehoiada said 559 to them, “Behold 2009, the king’s 4428 son 1121 shall reign 4427a, as the LORD 3068 has spoken 1696 concerning 5921 the sons 1121 of David 1732.

 23:4 “This 2088 is the thing 1697 which 834 you shall do 6213a: one third 7992 of you, of the priests 3548 and Levites 3881 who come 935 in on the sabbath 7676, [shall be] gatekeepers 7778 5592b,

 23:5 and one third 7992 [shall be] at the king’s 4428 house 1004, and a third 7992 at the Gate 8179 of the Foundation 3247; and all 3605 the people 5971a [shall be] in the courts 2691a of the house 1004 of the LORD 3068.

 23:6 “But let no 408 one enter 935 the house 1004 of the LORD 3068 except 3588 518 the priests 3548 and the ministering 8334 Levites 3881; they may enter 935, for they are holy 6944. And let all 3605 the people 5971a keep 8104 the charge 4931 of the LORD 3068.

 23:7 “The Levites 3881 will surround 5362b 5439 the king 4428, each 376 man 376 with his weapons 3627 in his hand 3027; and whoever enters 935 the house 1004, let him be killed 4191. Thus be with the king 4428 when he comes 935 in and when he goes 3318 out.”

 23:8 ¶ So the Levites 3881 and all 3605 Judah 3063 did 6213a according to all 3605 that Jehoiada 3077 the priest 3548 commanded 6680. And each 376 one 376 of them took 3947 his men 376 who were to come 935 in on the sabbath 7676, with those who were to go 3318 out on the sabbath 7676, for Jehoiada 3077 the priest 3548 did not dismiss 6362 [any of] the divisions 4256.

 23:9 Then Jehoiada 3077 the priest 3548 gave 5414 to the captains 8269 of hundreds 3967 the spears 2595 and the large 4043 and small 7982 shields 7982 which 834 had been King 4428 David’s 1732, which 834 were in the house 1004 of God 430.

 23:10 He stationed 5975 all 3605 the people 5971a, each 376 man 376 with his weapon 7973 in his hand 3027, from the right 3233 side 3802 of the house 1004 to the left 8042 side 3802 of the house 1004, by the altar 4196 and by the house 1004, around 5439 the king 4428.

 23:11 Then they brought 3318 out the king’s 4428 son 1121 and put 5414 the crown 5145 on him, and [gave him] the testimony 5715 and made 4427a him king 4427a. And Jehoiada 3077 and his sons 1121 anointed 4886 him and said 559, “[Long] live 2421a the king 4428!”

 23:12 ¶ When Athaliah 6271 heard 8085 the noise 6963 of the people 5971a running 7323 and praising 1984b the king 4428, she came 935 into the house 1004 of the LORD 3068 to the people 5971a.

 23:13 She looked 7200, and behold 2009, the king 4428 was standing 5975 by his pillar 5982 at the entrance 3996, and the captains 8269 and the trumpeters 2689 [were] beside 5921 the king 4428. And all 3605 the people 5971a of the land 776 rejoiced 8056 and blew 8628 trumpets 2689, the singers 7891 with [their] musical 7892a instruments 3627 leading 3045 the praise 1984b. Then Athaliah 6271 tore 7167 her clothes 899b and said 559, “Treason 7195! Treason 7195!”

 23:14 Jehoiada 3077 the priest 3548 brought 3318 out the captains 8269 of hundreds 3967 who were appointed 6485 over the army 2428 and said 559 to them, “Bring 3318 her out between 413 4480 1004 the ranks 7713; and whoever follows 935 310 her, put 4191 to death 4191 with the sword 2719.” For the priest 3548 said 559, “Let her not be put 4191 to death 4191 in the house 1004 of the LORD 3068.”

 23:15 So they seized 7760 3027 her, and when she arrived 935 at the entrance 3996 of the Horse 5483b Gate 8179 of the king’s 4428 house 1004, they put 4191 her to death 4191 there 8033.

 23:16 ¶ Then Jehoiada 3077 made 3772 a covenant 1285 between 996 himself and all 3605 the people 5971a and the king 4428, that they would be the LORD’S 3068 people 5971a.

 23:17 And all 3605 the people 5971a went 935 to the house 1004 of Baal 1168a and tore 5422 it down 5422, and they broke 7665 in pieces 7665 his altars 4196 and his images 6754, and killed 2026 Mattan 4977 the priest 3548 of Baal 1168a before 6440 the altars 4196.

 23:18 Moreover, Jehoiada 3077 placed 7760 the offices 6486 of the house 1004 of the LORD 3068 under the authority 3027 of the Levitical 3881 priests 3548, whom 834 David 1732 had assigned 2505a over 5921 the house 1004 of the LORD 3068, to offer 5927 the burnt 5930a offerings 5930a of the LORD 3068, as it is written 3789 in the law 8451 of Moses 4872—with rejoicing 8057 and singing 7892a according 5921 to the order 3027 of David 1732.

 23:19 He stationed 5975 the gatekeepers 7778 of the house 1004 of the LORD 3068, so that no 3808 one would enter 935 [who was] in any 3605 way 1697 unclean 2931.

 23:20 He took 3947 the captains 8269 of hundreds 3967, the nobles 117, the rulers 4910 of the people 5971a and all 3605 the people 5971a of the land 776, and brought 3381 the king 4428 down 3381 from the house 1004 of the LORD 3068, and came 935 through 8432 the upper 5945a gate 8179 to the king’s 4428 house 1004. And they placed 3427 the king 4428 upon the royal 4467 throne 3678.

 23:21 So all 3605 of the people 5971a of the land 776 rejoiced 8055 and the city 5892b was quiet 8252. For they had put 4191 Athaliah 6271 to death 4191 with the sword 2719.
