 78:1 ¶
[[[A Psalm] of instruction for Asaph.]] Give heed, O my people, to my law: incline your ear to the words of my mouth. |
|
 78:1 ¶
[[Maschilºº
of Asaph.]]º
Give ear,ºº
O my people,º
[to] my law:º
inclineºº
your earsº
to the wordsº
of my mouth.º |
 78:2
I will open my mouth in parables: I will utter dark sayings [which have been] from the beginning. |
|
 78:2
I will openºº
my mouthº
in a parable:º
I will utterºº
dark sayingsº
ofº
old:º |
 78:3
All which we have heard and known, and our fathers have declared to us. |
|
 78:3
Whichº
we have heardºº
and known,ºº
and our fathersº
have toldºº
us. |
 78:4
They were not hid from their children to a second generations; [the fathers] declaring the praises of the Lord, and his mighty acts, and his wonders which he wrought. |
|
 78:4
We will notº
hideºº
[them] from their children,ºº
shewingºº
to the generationº
to comeº
the praisesº
of Yahweh,º
and his strength,º
and his wonderful worksºº
thatº
he hath done.ºº |
 78:5
And he raised up a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, to make it known to their children: |
|
 78:5
For he establishedºº
a testimonyº
in Jacob,º
and appointedºº
a lawº
in Israel,º
whichº
he commandedººº
our fathers,º
that they should make them knownºº
to their children:º |
 78:6
that another generation might know, even the sons which should be born; and they should arise and declare them to their children. |
|
 78:6
Thatº
the generationº
to comeº
might knowºº
[them, even] the childrenº
[which] should be born;ºº
[who] should ariseºº
and declareºº
[them] to their children:º |
 78:7
That they might set their hope on God, and not forget the works of God, but diligently seek his commandments. |
|
 78:7
That they might setºº
their hopeº
in Elohim,º
and notº
forgetºº
the worksº
of El,º
but keepºº
his commandments:º |
 78:8
That they should not be as their fathers, a perverse and provoking generation; a generation which set not its heart aright, and its spirit was not steadfast with God. |
|
 78:8
And might notº
beº
as their fathers,º
a stubbornºº
and rebelliousºº
generation;º
a generationº
[that] setºº
not their heartº
aright,ºººº
and whose spiritº
was notº
stedfastºº
withº
El.º |
 78:9
The children of Ephraim, bending and shooting [with] the bow, turned [back] in the day of battle. |
|
 78:9
The childrenº
of Ephraim,º
[being] armed,ºº
[and] carryingºº
bows,º
turned backºº
in the dayº
of battle.º |
 78:10
They kept not the covenant of God, and would not walk in his law. |
|
 78:10
They keptºº
notº
the covenantº
of Elohim,º
and refusedºº
to walkººº
in his law;º |
 78:11
And they forgot his benefits, and his miracles which he [had] shewed them; |
|
 78:11
And forgatºº
his works,º
and his wondersºº
thatº
he had shewedºº
them. |
 78:12
the miracles which he wrought before their fathers, in the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, in the plain of Tanes. |
|
 78:12
Marvellous thingsº
didºº
he in the sightº
of their fathers,º
in the landº
of Egypt,º
[in] the fieldº
of Zoan.º |
 78:13
He clave the sea, and led them through: he made the waters to stand as [in] a bottle. |
|
 78:13
He dividedºº
the sea,º
and caused them to pass through;ºº
and he made the watersº
to standºº
asº
an heap.º |
 78:14
And he guided them with a cloud by day, and all the night with a light of fire. |
|
 78:14
In the daytimeº
also he ledºº
them with a cloud,º
and allº
the nightº
with a lightº
of fire.º |
 78:15
He clave a rock in the wilderness, and made them drink as in a great deep. |
|
 78:15
He claveºº
the rocksº
in the wilderness,º
and gave [them] drinkºº
as [out of] the greatº
depths.º |
 78:16
And he brought water out of the rock, and caused waters to flow down as rivers. |
|
 78:16
He broughtºº
streamsºº
also outºº
of the rock,ºº
and caused watersº
to run downºº
like rivers.º |
 78:17
And they sinned yet more against him; they provoked the Most High in the wilderness. |
|
 78:17
And they sinnedºº
yetº
moreºº
against him by provokingºº
Elyonº
in the wilderness.º |
 78:18
And they tempted God in their hearts, in asking meat for [the desire of] their souls. |
|
 78:18
And they temptedºº
Elº
in their heartº
by askingºº
meatº
for their lust.º |
 78:19
They spoke also against God, and said, Will God be able to prepare a table in the wilderness? |
|
 78:19
Yea, they spakeºº
against Elohim;º
they said,ºº
Canºº
Elº
furnishºº
a tableº
in the wilderness?º |
 78:20
Forasmuch as he smote the rock, and the waters flowed, and the torrents ran abundantly; will he be able also to give bread, or prepare a table for his people? |
|
 78:20
Behold,º
he smoteºº
the rock,º
that the watersº
gushed out,ºº
and the streamsº
overflowed;ºº
canºº
he giveºº
breadº
also?º
canºº
he provideºº
fleshº
for his people?º |
 78:21
Therefore the Lord heard, and was provoked: and fire was kindled in Jacob, and wrath went up against Israel. |
|
 78:21
Thereforeº
Yahwehº
heardºº
[this], and was wroth:ºº
so a fireº
was kindledºº
against Jacob,º
and angerº
alsoº
came upºº
against Israel;º |
 78:22
Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation. |
|
 78:22
Becauseº
they believedºº
notº
in Elohim,º
and trustedºº
notº
in his salvation:º |
 78:23
Yet he commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven, |
|
 78:23
Though he had commandedºº
the cloudsº
from above,ºº
and openedºº
the doorsº
of heaven,º |
 78:24
and rained upon them manna to eat, and gave them the bread of heaven. |
|
 78:24
And had rained downºº
mannaº
uponº
them to eat,ºº
and had givenºº
them of the cornº
of heaven.º |
 78:25
Man ate angels' bread; he sent them provision to the full. |
|
 78:25
Manº
did eatºº
angels'º
food:º
he sentºº
them meatº
to the full.º |
 78:26
He removed the south wind from heaven; and by his might he brought in the south-west wind. |
|
 78:26
He caused an east windº
to blowºº
in the heaven:º
and by his powerº
he broughtº
inºº
the south wind.º |
 78:27
And he rained upon them flesh like dust, and feathered birds like the sand of the seas. |
|
 78:27
He rainedºº
fleshº
also uponº
them as dust,º
and featheredº
fowlsº
like as the sandº
of the sea:º |
 78:28
And they fell into the midst of their camp, round about their tents. |
|
 78:28
And he let [it] fallºº
in the midstº
of their camp,º
round aboutº
their habitations.º |
 78:29
So they ate, and were completely filled; and he gave them their desire. |
|
 78:29
So they did eat,ºº
and were wellº
filled:ºº
for he gaveºº
them their own desire;º |
 78:30
They were not disappointed of their desire: [but] when their food was yet in their mouth, |
|
 78:30
They were notº
estrangedºº
from their lust.ºº
But while their meatº
[was] yetº
in their mouths,º |
 78:31
then the indignation of God rose up against them, and slew the fattest of them, and overthrew the choice men of Israel. |
|
 78:31
The wrathº
of Elohimº
cameºº
upon them, and slewºº
the fattestº
of them, and smote downºº
the chosenº
[men] of Israel.º |
 78:32
In the midst of all this they sinned yet more, and believed not his miracles. |
|
 78:32
For allº
thisº
they sinnedºº
still,º
and believedºº
notº
for his wondrous works.ºº |
 78:33
And their days were consumed in vanity, and their years with anxiety. |
|
 78:33
Therefore their daysº
did he consumeºº
in vanity,º
and their yearsº
in trouble.º |
 78:34
When he slew them, they sought him: and they returned and called betimes upon God. |
|
 78:34
Whenº
he slewºº
them, then they soughtºº
him: and they returnedºº
and enquired earlyºº
after El.º |
 78:35
And they remembered that God was their helper, and the most high God was their redeemer. |
|
 78:35
And they rememberedºº
thatº
Elohimº
[was] their rock,º
and Elº
Elyonº
their redeemer.ºº |
 78:36
Yet they loved him [only] with their mouth, and lied to him with their tongue. |
|
 78:36
Nevertheless they did flatterºº
him with their mouth,º
and they liedºº
unto him with their tongues.º |
 78:37
For their heart [was] not right with him, neither were they steadfast in his covenant. |
|
 78:37
For their heartº
was not rightººº
withº
him, neitherº
were they stedfastºº
in his covenant.º |
 78:38
But he is compassionate, and will forgive their sins, and will not destroy [them]: yea, he will frequently turn away his wrath, and will not kindle all his anger. |
|
 78:38
But he,º
[being] full of compassion,º
forgaveºº
[their] iniquity,º
and destroyedºº
[them] not:º
yea, manyº
a timeºº
turnedºº
he his angerº
away,ººº
and did notº
stir upºº
allº
his wrath.º |
 78:39
And he remembered that they are flesh; a wind that passes away, and returns not. |
|
 78:39
For he rememberedºº
thatº
theyº
[were but] flesh;º
a windº
that passeth away,ºº
and cometh not again.ººº |
 78:40
How often did they provoke him in the wilderness, [and] anger him in a dry land! |
|
 78:40
Howº
oftº
did they provokeºº
him in the wilderness,º
[and] grieveºº
him in the desert!º |
 78:41
Yea, they turned back, and tempted God, and provoked the Holy One of Israel. |
|
 78:41
Yea, they turned backºº
and temptedºº
El,º
and limitedºº
the Holy Oneº
of Israel.º |
 78:42
They remembered not his hand, the day in which he delivered them from the hand of the oppressor. |
|
 78:42
They rememberedºº
notºº
his hand,º
[nor] the dayº
whenº
he deliveredºº
them fromº
the enemy.º |
 78:43
How he had wrought his signs in Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, and his wonders in the field of Tanes: |
|
 78:43
Howº
he had wroughtºº
his signsº
in Egypt,º
and his wondersº
in the fieldº
of Zoan:º |
 78:44
and had changed their rivers into blood; and their streams, that they should not drink. |
|
 78:44
And had turnedºº
their riversº
into blood;º
and their floods,ºº
that they could notº
drink.ºº |
 78:45
He sent against them the dog-fly, and it devoured them; and the frog, and it spoiled them. |
|
 78:45
He sentºº
divers sorts of fliesº
among them, which devouredºº
them; and frogs,º
which destroyedºº
them. |
 78:46
And he gave their fruit to the canker worm, and their labours to the locust. |
|
 78:46
He gaveºº
also their increaseº
unto the caterpiller,º
and their labourº
unto the locust.º |
 78:47
He killed their vines with hail, and their sycamores with frost. |
|
 78:47
He destroyedºº
their vinesº
with hail,º
and their sycomore treesº
with frost.º |
 78:48
And he gave up their cattle to hail, and their substance to the fire. |
|
 78:48
He gave upºº
their cattleº
also to the hail,º
and their flocksº
to hot thunderbolts.º |
 78:49
He sent out against them the fury of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and affliction, a message by evil angels. |
|
 78:49
He castºº
upon them the fiercenessº
of his anger,º
wrath,º
and indignation,º
and trouble,º
by sendingº
evilº
angelsº
[among them]. |
 78:50
He made a way for his wrath; he spared not their souls from death, but consigned their cattle to death; |
|
 78:50
He madeºº
a wayº
to his anger;º
he sparedºº
notº
their soulº
from death,ºº
but gaveºº
their lifeº
overºº
to the pestilence;º |
 78:51
and smote every first-born in the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}; the first-fruits of their labours in the tents of Ham{gr.Cham}. |
|
 78:51
And smoteºº
allº
the firstbornº
in Egypt;º
the chiefº
of [their] strengthº
in the tabernaclesº
of Ham:º |
 78:52
And he removed his people like sheep; he led them as a flock in the wilderness. |
|
 78:52
But made his own peopleº
to go forthºº
like sheep,º
and guidedºº
them in the wildernessº
like a flock.º |
 78:53
And he guided them with hope, and they feared not: but the sea covered their enemies. |
|
 78:53
And he ledºº
them on safely,º
so that they fearedºº
not:º
but the seaº
overwhelmedºº
their enemies.ºº |
 78:54
And he brought them in to the mountain of his sanctuary, this mountain which his right hand had purchased. |
|
 78:54
And he broughtºº
them toº
the borderº
of his sanctuary,º
[even to] thisº
mountain,º
[which] his right handº
had purchased.ºº |
 78:55
And he cast out the nations from before them, and made them to inherit by a line of inheritance, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents. |
|
 78:55
He cast outºº
the heathenº
also beforeºº
them, and dividedºº
them an inheritanceº
by line,º
and made the tribesº
of Israelº
to dwellºº
in their tents.º |
 78:56
Ye they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies. |
|
 78:56
Yet they temptedºº
and provokedººº
Elohimº
Elyon,º
and keptºº
notº
his testimonies:º |
 78:57
And they turned back, and broke covenant, even as also their fathers: they became like a crooked bow. |
|
 78:57
But turned back,ºº
and dealt unfaithfullyºº
like their fathers:º
they were turned asideºº
like a deceitfulº
bow.º |
 78:58
And they provoked him with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images. |
|
 78:58
For they provoked him to angerºº
with their high places,º
and moved him to jealousyºº
with their graven images.º |
 78:59
God heard and lightly regarded [them], and greatly despised Israel. |
|
 78:59
When Elohimº
heardºº
[this], he was wroth,ºº
and greatlyº
abhorredºº
Israel:º |
 78:60
And he rejected the tabernacle of Shelah{gr.Selom}, his tent where he dwelt among men. |
|
 78:60
So that he forsookºº
the tabernacleº
of Shiloh,º
the tentº
[which] he placedºº
among men;º |
 78:61
And he gave their strength into captivity, and their beauty into the enemy's hand. |
|
 78:61
And deliveredºº
his strengthº
into captivity,º
and his gloryº
into the enemy'sº
hand.º |
 78:62
And he gave his people to the sword; and disdained his inheritance. |
|
 78:62
He gaveºº
his peopleº
overºº
also unto the sword;º
and was wrothºº
with his inheritance.º |
 78:63
Fire devoured their young men; and their virgins mourned not. |
|
 78:63
The fireº
consumedºº
their young men;º
and their maidensº
were notº
given to marriage.ºº |
 78:64
Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows shall not be wept for. |
|
 78:64
Their priestsº
fellºº
by the sword;º
and their widowsº
made noº
lamentation.ºº |
 78:65
So the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, [and] as a mighty man who has been heated with wine. |
|
 78:65
Then Yahwehº
awakedºº
as one out of sleep,º
[and] like a mighty manº
that shoutethºº
by reason of wine.ºº |
 78:66
And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he brought on them a perpetual reproach. |
|
 78:66
And he smoteºº
his enemiesº
in the hinder parts:º
he putºº
them to a perpetualº
reproach.º |
 78:67
And he rejected the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim; |
|
 78:67
Moreover he refusedºº
the tabernacleº
of Joseph,º
and choseºº
notº
the tribeº
of Ephraim:º |
 78:68
but chose the tribe of Judah{gr.Juda}, the mount Zion{gr.Sion} which he loved. |
|
 78:68
But choseººº
the tribeº
of Judah,ºº
the mountº
Zionº
whichº
he loved.ºº |
 78:69
And he built his sanctuary as [the place] of unicorns; he founded it for ever on the earth. |
|
 78:69
And he builtºº
his sanctuaryº
likeº
highºº
[palaces], like the earthº
which he hath establishedºº
for ever.º |
 78:70
He chose David also his servant, and took him up from the flocks of sheep. |
|
 78:70
He choseºº
Davidº
also his servant,º
and tookºº
him from the sheepfolds:ººº |
 78:71
He took him from following the ewes great with young, to be the shepherd of Jacob his servant, and Israel his inheritance. |
|
 78:71
From followingºº
the ewes great with youngºº
he broughtºº
him to feedºº
Jacobº
his people,º
and Israelº
his inheritance.º |
 78:72
So he tended them in the innocency of his heart; and guided them by the skillfulness of his hands. |
|
 78:72
So he fedºº
them according to the integrityº
of his heart;º
and guidedºº
them by the skilfulnessº
of his hands.º |
