Numbers 22
1 Balak's first message for Balaam is refused. 15 His second message obtaineth him. 22 An angel would have slain him, if his ass had not saved him. 36 Balak entertaineth him.
22:1
Then the sons 1121 of Israel 3478 journeyed 5265, and camped 2583 in the plains 6160 of Moab 4124 beyond 4480 5676 the Jordan 3383 [opposite] Jericho 3405.
22:2
¶ Now Balak 1111 the son 1121 of Zippor 6834 saw 7200 all 3605 that Israel 3478 had done 6213a to the Amorites 567.
22:3
So Moab 4124 was in great 3966 fear 1481c because 4480 6440 of the people 5971a, for they were numerous 7227a; and Moab 4124 was in dread 6973 of the sons 1121 of Israel 3478.
22:4
Moab 4124 said 559 to the elders 2205 of Midian 4080, “Now 6258 this horde 6951 will lick 3897 up all 3605 that is around 5439 us, as the ox 7794 licks 3897 up the grass 3418 of the field 7704.” And Balak 1111 the son 1121 of Zippor 6834 was king 4428 of Moab 4124 at that time 6256.

So he sent 7971 messengers 4397 to Balaam 1109a the son 1121 of Beor 1160, at Pethor 6604a, which 834 is near 5921 the River 5104, [in] the land 776 of the sons 1121 of his people 5971a, to call 7121 him, saying 559, “Behold 2009, a people 5971a came 3318 out of Egypt 4714; behold 2009, they cover 3680 the surface 5869 of the land 776, and they are living 3427 opposite 4480 4136 me.

“Now 6258, therefore, please 4994 come 1980, curse 779 this 2088 people 5971a for me since 3588 they are too 4480 mighty 6099 for me; perhaps 194 I may be able 3201 to defeat 5221 them and drive 1644 them out of the land 776. For I know 3045 that he whom 834 you bless 1288 is blessed 1288, and he whom 834 you curse 779 is cursed 779.”

¶ So the elders 2205 of Moab 4124 and the elders 2205 of Midian 4080 departed 1980 with the [fees for] divination 7081 in their hand 3027; and they came 935 to Balaam 1109a and repeated 1696 Balak’s 1111 words 1697 to him.
22:8
He said 559 to them, “Spend 3885a the night 3915 here 6311, and I will bring 7725 word 1697 back 7725 to you as the LORD 3068 may speak 1696 to me.” And the leaders 8269 of Moab 4124 stayed 3427 with Balaam 1109a.
22:9
Then God 430 came 935 to Balaam 1109a and said 559, “Who 4310 are these 428 men 376 with you?”
22:10
Balaam 1109a said 559 to God 430, “Balak 1111 the son 1121 of Zippor 6834, king 4428 of Moab 4124, has sent 7971 [word] to me,

‘Behold 2009, there is a people 5971a who came 3318 out of Egypt 4714 and they cover 3680 the surface 5869 of the land 776; now 6258 come 1980, curse 6895 them for me; perhaps 194 I may be able 3201 to fight 3898a against them and drive 1644 them out.’”
22:12
God 430 said 559 to Balaam 1109a, “Do not go 1980 with them; you shall not curse 779 the people 5971a, for they are blessed 1288.”
22:13
So Balaam 1109a arose 6965 in the morning 1242 and said 559 to Balak’s 1111 leaders 8269, “Go 1980 back 1980 to your land 776, for the LORD 3068 has refused 3985 to let 5414 me go 1980 with you.”
22:14
The leaders 8269 of Moab 4124 arose 6965 and went 1980 to Balak 1111 and said 559, “Balaam 1109a refused 3985 to come 1980 with us.”
22:15
¶ Then Balak 1111 again 5750 3254 sent 7971 leaders 8269, more 4480 numerous 7227a and more 4480 distinguished 3513 than 4480 the former 428.
22:16
They came 935 to Balaam 1109a and said 559 to him, “Thus 3541 says 559 Balak 1111 the son 1121 of Zippor 6834, ‘Let nothing 408, I beg 4994 you, hinder 4513 you from coming 1980 to me;
22:17
for I will indeed 3513 honor 3513 you richly 3966, and I will do 6213a whatever 3605 834 you say 559 to me. Please 4994 come 1980 then, curse 6895 this 2088 people 5971a for me.’”
22:18
Balaam 1109a replied 6030a to the servants 5650 of Balak 1111, “Though 518 Balak 1111 were to give 5414 me his house 1004 full 4393 of silver 3701 and gold 2091, I could 3201 not do 6213a anything, either small 6996a or 176 great 1419, contrary 5674a to the command 6310 of the LORD 3068 my God 430.
22:19
“Now 6258 please 4994, you also 1571 stay 3427 here 2088 tonight 3915, and I will find 3045 out what 4100 else 3254 the LORD 3068 will speak 1696 to me.”
22:20
God 430 came 935 to Balaam 1109a at night 3915 and said 559 to him, “If 518 the men 376 have come 935 to call 7121 you, rise 6965 up [and] go 1980 with them; but only 389 the word 1697 which 834 I speak 1696 to you shall you do 6213a.”
22:21
¶ So Balaam 1109a arose 6965 in the morning 1242, and saddled 2280 his donkey 860 and went 1980 with the leaders 8269 of Moab 4124.
22:22
But God 430 was angry 639 2734 because 3588 he was going 1980, and the angel 4397 of the LORD 3068 took 3320 his stand 3320 in the way 1870 as an adversary 7854 against him. Now he was riding 7392 on his donkey 860 and his two 8147 servants 5288 were with him.
22:23
When the donkey 860 saw 7200 the angel 4397 of the LORD 3068 standing 5324 in the way 1870 with his drawn 8025 sword 2719 in his hand 3027, the donkey 860 turned 5186 off from the way 1870 and went 1980 into the field 7704; but Balaam 1109a struck 5221 the donkey 860 to turn 5186 her back 5186 into the way 1870.
22:24
Then the angel 4397 of the LORD 3068 stood 5975 in a narrow 4934 path 4934 of the vineyards 3754, [with] a wall 1447 on this 2088 side 2088 and a wall 1447 on that side 2088.
22:25
When the donkey 860 saw 7200 the angel 4397 of the LORD 3068, she pressed 3905 herself to the wall 7023 and pressed 3905 Balaam’s 1109a foot 7272 against 413 the wall 7023, so he struck 5221 her again 3254.

The angel 4397 of the LORD 3068 went 5674a further 3254, and stood 5975 in a narrow 6862a place 4725 where 834 there 369 was no 369 way 1870 to turn 5186 to the right 3225 hand 3225 or the left 8040.

When the donkey 860 saw 7200 the angel 4397 of the LORD 3068, she lay 7257 down 7257 under 8478 Balaam 1109a; so Balaam 1109a was angry 639 2734 and struck 5221 the donkey 860 with his stick 4731.
22:28
And the LORD 3068 opened 6605a the mouth 6310 of the donkey 860, and she said 559 to Balaam 1109a, “What 4100 have I done 6213a to you, that you have struck 5221 me these 2088 three 7969 times 7272?”

Then Balaam 1109a said 559 to the donkey 860, “Because 3588 you have made 5953a a mockery 5953a of me! If 3863 there 3426 had 1426 been 3426 a sword 2719 in my hand 3027, I would have killed 2026 you by now 6258.”
22:30
The donkey 860 said 559 to Balaam 1109a, “Am I not your donkey 860 on which 834 you have ridden 7392 all 4480 5750 your life 5750 to this 2088 day 3117? Have I ever 5532a been accustomed 5532a to do 6213a so 3541 to you?” And he said 559, “No 3808.”

¶ Then the LORD 3068 opened 1540 the eyes 5869 of Balaam 1109a, and he saw 7200 the angel 4397 of the LORD 3068 standing 5324 in the way 1870 with his drawn 8025 sword 2719 in his hand 3027; and he bowed 6915 all the way 1870 to the ground 639.

The angel 4397 of the LORD 3068 said 559 to him, “Why 5921 4100 have you struck 5221 your donkey 860 these 2088 three 7969 times 7272? Behold 2009, I have come 3318 out as an adversary 7854, because 3588 your way 1870 was contrary 3399 to me.
22:33
“But the donkey 860 saw 7200 me and turned 5186 aside 5186 from me these 2088 three 7969 times 7272. If 194 she had not turned 5186 aside 5186 from me, I would surely 3588 have killed 2026 you just now 6258, and let her live 2421a.”
22:34
Balaam 1109a said 559 to the angel 4397 of the LORD 3068, “I have sinned 2398, for I did not know 3045 that you were standing 5324 in the way 1870 against 7122 me. Now 6258 then, if 518 it is displeasing 7489a to you, I will turn 7725 back 7725.”
22:35
But the angel 4397 of the LORD 3068 said 559 to Balaam 1109a, “Go 1980 with the men 376, but you shall speak 1696 only 657 the word 1697 which 834 I tell 1696 you.” So Balaam 1109a went 1980 along with the leaders 8269 of Balak 1111.
22:36
¶ When Balak 1111 heard 8085 that Balaam 1109a was coming 935, he went 3318 out to meet 7122 him at the city 5892b of Moab 4124, which 834 is on the Arnon 769 border 1366, at the extreme 7097a end 7097a of the border 1366.
22:37
Then Balak 1111 said 559 to Balaam 1109a, “Did I not urgently 7971 send 7971 to you to call 7121 you? Why 4100 did you not come 1980 to me? Am I really 552 unable 3808 3201 to honor 3513 you?”
22:38
So Balaam 1109a said 559 to Balak 1111, “Behold 2009, I have come 935 now 6258 to you! Am I able 3201 to speak 1696 anything 3972 at all? The word 1697 that God 430 puts 7760 in my mouth 6310, that I shall speak 1696.”
22:39
And Balaam 1109a went 1980 with Balak 1111, and they came 935 to Kiriath-huzoth 7155.
22:40
Balak 1111 sacrificed 2076 oxen 1241 and sheep 6629, and sent 7971 [some] to Balaam 1109a and the leaders 8269 who 834 were with him.
22:41
¶ Then it came 1961 about in the morning 1242 that Balak 1111 took 3947 Balaam 1109a and brought 5927 him up to the high 1116 places 1116 of Baal 1168a, and he saw 7200 from there 8033 a portion 7097a of the people 5971a.
