 4:1 ¶
And Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and brought forth Cain and said, I have gained a man through God. |
|
 4:1 ¶
And Adamºº
knewººº
Eveº
his wife;º
and she conceived,ºº
and bareººº
Cain,º
and said,ºº
I have gottenºº
a manº
fromº
Yahweh.º |
 4:2
And she again bore his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. |
 4:2
And she againºº
bareººº
his brotherºº
Abel.º
And Abelº
wasº
a keeperºº
of sheep,º
but Cainº
wasº
a tillerºº
of the ground.º |
 4:3
And it was so after some time that Cain brought of the fruits of the earth a sacrifice to the Lord. |
 4:3
And in processºº
of timeº
it came to pass,º
that Cainº
broughtºº
of the fruitºº
of the groundº
an offeringº
unto Yahweh.º |
 4:4
And Abel also brought of the first born of his sheep and of his fatlings, and God looked upon Abel and his gifts, |
 4:4
And Abel,º
heº
alsoº
broughtºº
of the firstlingsºº
of his flockº
and of the fatºº
thereof. And Yahwehº
had respectºº
untoº
Abelº
and toº
his offering:º |
 4:5
but Cain and his sacrifices he regarded not, and Cain was exceedingly sorrowful and his countenance fell. |
 4:5
But untoº
Cainº
and toº
his offeringº
he had not respect.ººº
And Cainº
was veryº
wroth,ºº
and his countenanceº
fell.ºº |
 4:6
And the Lord God said to Cain, Why art thou become very sorrowful and why is thy countenance fallen? |
 4:6
And Yahwehº
saidºº
untoº
Cain,º
Whyº
art thou wroth?ºº
and whyº
is thy countenanceº
fallen?ºº |
 4:7
Hast thou not sinned if thou hast brought it rightly, but not rightly divided it? be still, to thee shall be his submission, and thou shalt rule over him. |
 4:7
Ifº
thou doest well,ºº
shalt thou notº
be accepted?º
and ifº
thou doest notº
well,ºº
sinº
liethºº
at the door.º
And untoº
thee [shall be] his desire,º
and thouº
shalt ruleºº
over him. |
 4:8
And Cain said to Abel his brother, Let us go out into the plain; and it came to pass that when they were in the plain Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. |
 4:8
And Cainº
talkedºº
withº
Abelº
his brother:º
and it came to pass,º
when they wereº
in the field,º
that Cainº
rose upºº
againstº
Abelº
his brother,º
and slewº
him.ºº |
 4:9 ¶
And the Lord God said to Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? and he said, I know not, am I my brother's keeper? |
 4:9 ¶
And Yahwehº
saidºº
untoº
Cain,º
Whereº
[is] Abelº
thy brother?º
And he said,ºº
I knowºº
not:º
[Am] Iº
my brother'sº
keeper?ºº |
 4:10
And the Lord said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood cries to me out of the ground. |
 4:10
And he said,ºº
Whatº
hast thou done?ºº
the voiceº
of thy brother'sº
bloodº
criethºº
untoº
me fromº
the ground.º |
 4:11
And now thou [art] cursed from the earth which has opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand. |
 4:11
And nowº
[art] thouº
cursedºº
fromº
the earth,º
whichº
hath openedººº
her mouthº
to receiveºº
thy brother'sºº
bloodº
from thy hand;ºº |
 4:12
When thou tillest the earth, then it shall not continue to give its strength to thee: thou shalt be groaning and trembling on the earth. |
 4:12
Whenº
thou tillestººº
the ground,º
it shall notº
henceforthºº
yieldºº
unto thee her strength;º
a fugitiveºº
and a vagabondºº
shalt thou beº
in the earth.º |
 4:13
And Cain said to the Lord God, My crime [is] too great for me to be forgiven. |
 4:13
And Cainº
saidºº
untoº
Yahweh,º
My punishmentº
[is] greaterº
than I can bear.ººº |
 4:14
If thou castest me out this day from the face of the earth, and I shall be hidden from thy presence, and I shall be groaning and trembling upon the earth, then it will be that any one that finds me shall slay me. |
 4:14
Behold,º
thou hast driven me outººº
this dayº
fromºº
the faceº
of the earth;º
and fromº
thy faceºº
shall I be hid;ºº
and I shall beº
a fugitiveºº
and a vagabondºº
in the earth;º
and it shall come to pass,ºº
[that] every oneº
that findethº
meºº
shall slayº
me.ºº |
 4:15
And the Lord God said to him, Not so, any one that slays Cain shall suffer seven-fold vengeance; and the Lord God set a mark upon Cain that no one that found him might slay him. |
 4:15
And Yahwehº
saidºº
unto him, Thereforeº
whosoeverº
slayethºº
Cain,º
vengeance shall be takenºº
on him sevenfold.º
And Yahwehº
setºº
a markº
upon Cain,º
lestº
anyº
findingºº
him should killºº
him. |
 4:16 ¶
So Cain went forth from the presence of God and dwelt in the land of Nod over against Eden{gr.Edem}. |
 4:16 ¶
And Cainº
went outºº
from the presenceºº
of Yahweh,º
and dweltºº
in the landº
of Nod,º
on the eastº
of Eden.º |
 4:17
And Cain knew his wife, and having conceived she bore Enoch; and he built a city; and he named the city after the name of his son, Enoch. |
 4:17
And Cainº
knewººº
his wife;º
and she conceived,ºº
and bareººº
Enoch:º
and he buildedººº
a city,º
and calledºº
the nameº
of the city,º
after the nameº
of his son,º
Enoch.º |
 4:18
And to Enoch was born Gaidad; and Gaidad begot Mahalaleel{gr.Maleleel}; and Mahalaleel{gr.Maleleel} begot Methuselah{gr.Mathusala}; and Methuselah{gr.Mathusala} begot Lamech. |
 4:18
And unto Enochº
was bornººº
Irad:º
and Iradº
begatººº
Mehujael:º
and Mehujaelº
begatººº
Methusael:º
and Methusaelº
begatººº
Lamech.º |
 4:19 ¶
And Lamech took to himself two wives; the name of the one was Adah{gr.Ada}, and the name of the second Sella. |
 4:19 ¶
And Lamechº
tookºº
unto him twoº
wives:º
the nameº
of the oneº
[was] Adah,º
and the nameº
of the otherº
Zillah.º |
 4:20
And Adah{gr.Ada} bore Jobel; he was the father of those that dwell in tents, feeding cattle. |
 4:20
And Adahº
bareººº
Jabal:º
heº
wasº
the fatherº
of such as dwellºº
in tents,º
and [of such as have] cattle.º |
 4:21
And the name of his brother was Jubal; he it was who invented the psaltery and harp. |
 4:21
And his brother'sº
nameº
[was] Jubal:º
heº
wasº
the fatherº
of allº
such as handleºº
the harpº
and organ.º |
 4:22
And Sella also bore Tubal{gr.Thobel}; he was a smith, a manufacturer both of brass and iron; and the sister of Tubal{gr.Thobel} was Noema. |
 4:22
And Zillah,º
sheº
alsoº
bareººº
Tubalcain,º
an instructerºº
of everyº
artificerº
in brassº
and iron:º
and the sisterº
of Tubalcainº
[was] Naamah.º |
 4:23
And Lamech said to his wives, Adah{gr.Ada} and Sella, Hear my voice, ye wives of Lamech, consider my words, because I have slain a man to my sorrow and a youth to my grief. |
 4:23
And Lamechº
saidºº
unto his wives,º
Adahº
and Zillah,º
Hearºº
my voice;º
ye wivesº
of Lamech,º
hearkenºº
unto my speech:º
forº
I have slainºº
a manº
to my wounding,º
and a young manº
to my hurt.º |
 4:24
Because vengeance has been exacted seven times on Cain's behalf, on Lamech's [it shall be] seventy times seven. |
 4:24
Ifº
Cainº
shall be avengedºº
sevenfold,º
truly Lamechº
seventyº
and sevenfold.º |
 4:25 ¶
And Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore a son, and called his name Seth, saying, For God has raised up to me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. |
 4:25 ¶
And Adamºº
knewººº
his wifeº
again;º
and she bareºº
a son,º
and calledºº
hisº
nameº
Seth:º
Forº
Elohim,º
[said she], hath appointedºº
me anotherº
seedº
insteadº
ofº
Abel,º
whomº
Cainº
slew.ºº |
 4:26
And Seth had a son, and he called his name Enos: he hoped to call on the name of the Lord God. |
 4:26
And to Seth,º
to himº
alsoº
there was bornºº
a son;º
and he calledººº
his nameº
Enos:º
thenº
beganº
menºº
to callºº
upon the nameº
of Yahweh.º |
