 21:1 ¶ And the Lord visited Sarah{gr.Sarrha}, as he said, and the Lord did to Sarah{gr.Sarrha}, as he spoke.

 21:1 ¶ And Yahwehº visitedººº Sarahº asº he had said,ºº and Yahwehº didºº unto Sarahº asº he had spoken.ºº

 21:2 And she conceived and bore to Abraham{gr.Abraam} a son in old age, at the set time according as the Lord spoke to him.

 21:2 For Sarahº conceived,ºº and bareºº Abrahamº a sonº in his old age,º at the set timeº of whichº Elohimº had spokenºº to him.

 21:3 And Abraham{gr.Abraam} called the name of his son that was born to him, whom Sarah{gr.Sarrha} bore to him, Isaac.

 21:3 And Abrahamº calledººº the nameº of his sonº that was bornºº unto him, whomº Sarahº bareºº to him, Isaac.º

 21:4 And Abraham{gr.Abraam} circumcised Isaac on the eighth day, as God commanded him.

 21:4 And Abrahamº circumcisedºº his sonº Isaacº being eightº daysº old,º asº Elohimº had commandedºº him.

 21:5 And Abraham{gr.Abraam} was a hundred years old when Isaac his son was born to him.

 21:5 And Abrahamº was an hundredº yearsº old,º whenº his sonº Isaacº was bornºº unto him.

 21:6 ¶ And Sarah{gr.Sarrha} said, The Lord has made laughter for me, for whoever shall hear shall rejoice with me.

 21:6 ¶ And Sarahº said,ºº Elohimº hath madeºº me to laugh,º [so that] allº that hearºº will laughºº with me.

 21:7 And she said, Who shall say to Abraham{gr.Abraam} that Sarah{gr.Sarrha} suckles a child? for I have born a child in my old age.

 21:7 And she said,ºº Whoº would have saidºº unto Abraham,º that Sarahº should have given childrenº suck?ººº forº I have bornºº [him] a sonº in his old age.º

 21:8 And the child grew and was weaned, and Abraham{gr.Abraam} made a great feast the day that his son Isaac was weaned.

 21:8 And the childº grew,ºº and was weaned:ºº and Abrahamº madeºº a greatº feastº the [same] dayº thatº Isaacº was weaned.ºº

 21:9 ¶ And Sarah{gr.Sarrha} having seen the son of Hagar{gr.Agar} the Mizraimite{gr.Egyptian} who was born to Abraham{gr.Abraam}, sporting with Isaac her son,

 21:9 ¶ And Sarahº sawººº the sonº of Hagarº the Egyptian,º whichº she had bornºº unto Abraham,º mocking.ºº

 21:10 then she said to Abraham{gr.Abraam}, Cast out this bondwoman and her son, for the son of this bondwoman shall not inherit with my son Isaac.

 21:10 Wherefore she saidºº unto Abraham,º Cast outºº thisº bondwomanº and her son:º forº the sonº of thisº bondwomanº shall notº be heirºº withº my son,º [even] withº Isaac.º

 21:11 But the word appeared very hard before Abraham{gr.Abraam} concerning his son.

 21:11 And the thingº was veryº grievousºººº in Abraham'sº sightº becauseºº of his son.º

 21:12 ¶ But God said to Abraham{gr.Abraam}, Let it not be hard before thee concerning the child, and concerning the bondwoman; in all things whatsoever Sarah{gr.Sarrha} shall say to thee, hear her voice, for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.

 21:12 ¶ And Elohimº saidºº untoº Abraham,º Let it notº be grievousººº in thy sightº because ofº the lad,º and because ofº thy bondwoman;º in allº thatº Sarahº hath saidºº untoº thee, hearkenºº unto her voice;º forº in Isaacº shall thy seedº be called.ºº

 21:13 And moreover I will make the son of this bondwoman a great nation, because he is thy seed.

 21:13 And alsoºº of the sonº of the bondwomanº will I makeºº a nation,º becauseº heº [is] thy seed.º

 21:14 And Abraham{gr.Abraam} rose up in the morning and took loaves and a skin of water, and gave [them] to Hagar{gr.Agar}, and he put the child on her shoulder, and sent her away, and she having departed wandered in the wilderness near the well of the oath.

 21:14 And Abrahamº rose up earlyºº in the morning,º and tookºº bread,º and a bottleº of water,º and gaveºº [it] untoº Hagar,º puttingºº [it] onº her shoulder,º and the child,º and sent her away:ºº and she departed,ººº and wanderedºº in the wildernessº of Beersheba.º

 21:15 And the water failed out of the skin, and she cast the child under a fir tree.

 21:15 And the waterº was spentºº inº the bottle,º and she castººº the childº underº oneº of the shrubs.º

 21:16 And she departed and sat down opposite him at a distance, as it were a bow-shot, for she said, Surely I cannot see the death of my child: and she sat opposite him, and the child cried aloud and wept.

 21:16 And she went,ººº and sat her downºº over againstºº [him] a good way off,ºº as it were a bowshot:ººº forº she said,ºº Let me notº seeºº the deathº of the child.º And she satºº over againstºº [him], and lift upººº her voice,º and wept.ºº

 21:17 And God heard the voice of the child from the place where he was, and an angel of God called Hagar{gr.Agar} out of heaven, and said to her, What is it, Hagar{gr.Agar}? fear not, for God has heard the voice of the child from the place where he is.

 21:17 And Elohimº heardººº the voiceº of the lad;º and the angelº of Elohimº calledºº toº Hagarº out ofº heaven,º and saidºº unto her, Whatº aileth thee, Hagar?º fearºº not;º forº Elohimº hath heardººº the voiceº of the ladº whereºº heº [is].

 21:18 Rise up, and take the child, and hold him in thine hand, for I will make him a great nation.

 21:18 Arise,ºº lift upººº the lad,º and holdºº him inº thine hand;º forº I will makeºº him a greatº nation.º

 21:19 And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of springing water; and she went and filled the skin with water, and gave the child drink.

 21:19 And Elohimº openedººº her eyes,º and she sawºº a wellº of water;º and she went,ººº and filledººº the bottleº with water,º and gaveººº the ladº drink.ºº

 21:20 And God was with the child, and he grew and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.

 21:20 And Elohimº wasº withº the lad;º and he grew,ºº and dweltºº in the wilderness,º and becameº an archer.ººº

 21:21 And he dwelt in the wilderness, and his mother took him a wife out of Paran{gr.Pharan} of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}.

 21:21 And he dweltºº in the wildernessº of Paran:º and his motherº tookºº him a wifeº out of the landºº of Egypt.º

 21:22 ¶ And it came to pass at that time that Abimelech spoke, and Ochozath his friend, and Phichol the chief captain of his host, to Abraham{gr.Abraam}, saying, God is with thee in all things, whatsoever thou mayest do.

 21:22 ¶ And it came to passº at thatº time,º that Abimelechº and Phicholº the chief captainº of his hostº spakeºº untoº Abraham,º saying,ºº Elohimº [is] withº thee in allº thatº thouº doest:ºº

 21:23 Now therefore swear to me by God that thou wilt not injure me, nor my seed, nor my name, but according to the righteousness which I have performed with thee thou shalt deal with me, and with the land in which thou hast sojourned.

 21:23 Nowº therefore swearºº unto me hereº by Elohimº that thou wilt not deal falselyºº with me, nor with my son,º nor with my son's son:º [but] according to the kindnessº thatº I have doneºº untoº thee, thou shalt doºº untoº me, and toº the landº whereinº thou hast sojourned.ºº

 21:24 And Abraham{gr.Abraam} said, I will swear.

 21:24 And Abrahamº said,ºº Iº will swear.ºº

 21:25 And Abraham{gr.Abraam} reproved Abimelech because of the wells of water, which the servants of Abimelech took away.

 21:25 And Abrahamº reprovedººº Abimelechº becauseº ofºº a wellº of water,º whichº Abimelech'sº servantsº had violently taken away.ºº

 21:26 And Abimelech said to him, I know not who has done this thing to thee, neither didst thou tell it me, neither heard I it but only to-day.

 21:26 And Abimelechº said,ºº I wotºº notº whoº hath doneººº thisº thing:º neitherº didst thouº tellºº me, neitherº yetº heardºº Iº [of it], butº to day.º

 21:27 And Abraham{gr.Abraam} took sheep and calves, and gave them to Abimelech, and both made a covenant.

 21:27 And Abrahamº tookºº sheepº and oxen,º and gaveºº them unto Abimelech;º and bothº of themº madeºº a covenant.º

 21:28 And Abraham{gr.Abraam} set seven ewe-lambs by themselves.

 21:28 And Abrahamº setººº sevenº ewe lambsº of the flockº by themselves.º

 21:29 And Abimelech said to Abraham{gr.Abraam}, What are these seven ewe-lambs which thou hast set alone?

 21:29 And Abimelechº saidºº untoº Abraham,º Whatºº [mean] theseº sevenº ewe lambsº whichº thou hast setºº by themselves?º

 21:30 And Abraham{gr.Abraam} said, Thou shalt receive the seven ewe-lambs of me, that they may be for me as a witness, that I dug this well.

 21:30 And he said,ºº Forº [these]º sevenº ewe lambsº shalt thou takeºº of my hand,ºº thatº they may beº a witnessº unto me, thatº I have diggedººº thisº well.º

 21:31 Therefore he named the name of that place, The Well of the Oath, for there they both swore.

 21:31 Whereforeºº he calledºº thatº placeº Beersheba;º becauseº thereº they swareºº bothº of them.º

 21:32 And they made a covenant at the well of the oath. And there rose up Abimelech, Ochozath his friend, and Phichol the commander-in-chief of his army, and they returned to the land of the Philistines{gr.Phylistines}.

 21:32 Thus they madeºº a covenantº at Beersheba:º then Abimelechº rose up,ºº and Phicholº the chief captainº of his host,º and they returnedºº intoº the landº of the Philistines.º

 21:33 ¶ And Abraham{gr.Abraam} planted a field at the well of the oath, and called there on the name of the Lord, the everlasting God.

 21:33 ¶ And [Abraham] plantedºº a groveº in Beersheba,º and calledºº thereº on the nameº of Yahweh,º the everlastingº El.º

 21:34 And Abraham{gr.Abraam} sojourned in the land of the Philistines{gr.Phylistines} many days.

 21:34 And Abrahamº sojournedºº in the Philistines'º landº manyº days.º
