 24:1 ¶
And the Lord caused his anger to burn forth again in Israel, and [Satan] stirred up David against them, saying, Go, number Israel and Judah{gr.Juda}. |
|
 24:1 ¶
And againºº
the angerº
of Yahwehº
was kindledºº
against Israel,º
and he movedººº
Davidº
against them to say,ºº
Go,ººº
numberººº
Israelº
and Judah.º |
 24:2
And the king said to Joab commander of the host, who was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel and Judah{gr.Juda}, from Dan even to Beersheba{gr.Bersabee}, and number the people, and I will know the number of the people. |
 24:2
For the kingº
saidºº
toº
Joabº
the captainº
of the host,º
whichº
[was] withº
him, Goº
nowº
throughºº
allº
the tribesº
of Israel,º
from Danºº
even toº
Beersheba,º
and numberºº
yeº
the people,º
that I may knowººº
the numberº
of the people.º |
 24:3
And Joab said to the king, Now may the Lord add to the people a hundred-fold as many as they are, and [may] the eyes of my lord the king see it: but why does my lord the king desire this thing? |
 24:3
And Joabº
saidºº
untoº
the king,º
Now Yahwehº
thy Elohimº
addºº
untoº
the people,º
how many soeverº
they be,º
an hundredfold,ºº
and that the eyesº
of my adonº
the kingº
may seeºº
[it]: but whyº
doth my adonº
the kingº
delightºº
in thisº
thing?º |
 24:4
Nevertheless the word of the king prevailed against Joab an the captains of the host: And Joab and the captains of the host went out before the king to number the people of Israel. |
 24:4
Notwithstanding the king'sº
wordº
prevailedºº
againstº
Joab,º
and againstº
the captainsº
of the host.º
And Joabº
and the captainsº
of the hostº
went outºº
from the presenceº
of the king,º
to numberººº
the peopleº
of Israel.º |
 24:5 ¶
And they went over Jordan, and encamped in Aroer, on the right of the city which is in the midst of the valley of Gad and Eliezer. |
 24:5 ¶
And they passed overººº
Jordan,º
and pitchedºº
in Aroer,º
on the right sideº
of the cityº
thatº
[lieth] in the midstº
of the riverº
of Gad,º
and towardº
Jazer:º |
 24:6
And they came to Gilead{gr.Galaad}, and into the land of Thabason, which is Adasai, and they came to Danidan and Udan, and compassed Zidon{gr.Sidon}. |
 24:6
Then they cameºº
to Gilead,º
and toº
the landº
of Tahtimhodshi;º
and they cameºº
to Danjaan,º
and aboutº
toº
Zidon,º |
 24:7
And they came to Mapsar of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivite{gr.Evite} and the Canaanite{gr.Chananite}: and they came by the South of Judah{gr.Juda} to Beersheba{gr.Bersabee}. |
 24:7
And cameºº
to the strong holdº
of Tyre,º
and to allº
the citiesº
of the Hivites,º
and of the Canaanites:º
and they went outºº
toº
the southº
of Judah,º
[even] to Beersheba.º |
 24:8
And they compassed the whole land; and they arrived at Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. |
 24:8
So when they had goneºº
through allº
the land,º
they cameºº
to Jerusalemº
at the endºº
of nineº
monthsº
and twentyº
days.º |
 24:9
And Joab gave in the number of the census of the people to the king: and Israel consisted of eight hundred thousand men of might that drew sword; and the men of Judah{gr.Juda}, five hundred thousand fighting men. |
 24:9
And Joabº
gave upººº
the sumº
of the numberº
of the peopleº
untoº
the king:º
and there wereº
in Israelº
eightº
hundredº
thousandº
valiantº
menººº
that drewºº
the sword;º
and the menº
of Judahº
[were] fiveº
hundredº
thousandº
men.º |
 24:10 ¶
And the heart of David smote him after he had numbered the people; and David said to the Lord, I have sinned grievously, O Lord, [in] what I have now done: remove, I pray thee, the iniquity of thy servant, for I have been exceedingly foolish. |
 24:10 ¶
And David'sº
heartº
smoteºº
him afterº
thatº
he had numberedººº
the people.º
And Davidº
saidºº
untoº
Yahweh,º
I have sinnedºº
greatlyº
in thatº
I have done:ºº
and now,º
I beseech thee,º
O Yahweh,º
take awayººº
the iniquityº
of thy servant;º
forº
I have done veryº
foolishly.ºº |
 24:11
And David rose early in the morning, and the word of the Lord came to the prophet Gad, the seer, saying, Go, and speak to David, saying, |
 24:11
For when Davidº
was upºº
in the morning,º
the wordº
of Yahwehº
cameº
untoº
the prophetº
Gad,º
David'sº
seer,º
saying,ºº |
 24:12
Thus saith the Lord, I bring [one of] three things upon thee: now choose thee one of them, and I will do [it] to thee. |
 24:12
Goºº
and sayºº
untoº
David,º
Thusº
saithºº
Yahweh,º
Iº
offerººº
thee threeº
[things]; chooseºº
thee oneº
ofº
them, that I may [doº
it] unto thee.ºº |
 24:13
And Gad went in to David, and told him, and said to him, Choose [one of these things] to befall thee, whether there shall come upon thee [for] three years famine in thy land; or that thou shouldest flee three months before thine enemies, and they should pursue thee; or that there should be [for] three days mortality in thy land. Now then decide, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me. |
 24:13
So Gadº
cameºº
toº
David,º
and toldºº
him, and saidºº
unto him, Shall sevenº
yearsº
of famineº
comeºº
unto thee in thy land?º
orº
wilt thou fleeºº
threeº
monthsº
beforeº
thine enemies,º
while theyº
pursueºº
thee? orº
that there beº
threeº
days'º
pestilenceº
in thy land?º
nowº
advise,ºº
and seeºº
whatº
answerº
I shall returnºº
to him that sentºº
me. |
 24:14
And David said to Gad, On every side I am much straitened: let me fall now into the hands of the Lord, for his compassions [are] very many; and let me not fall into the hands of man. |
 24:14
And Davidº
saidºº
untoº
Gad,º
I am in a greatº
strait:ººº
let us fallºº
nowº
into the handº
of Yahweh;º
forº
his merciesº
[are] great:º
and let me notº
fallºº
into the handº
of man.º |
 24:15 ¶
So David chose for himself the mortality: and [they were] the days of wheat-harvest; and the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel from morning till noon, and the plague began among the people; and there died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba{gr.Bersabee} seventy thousand men. |
 24:15 ¶
So Yahwehº
sentºº
a pestilenceº
upon Israelº
from the morningº
even toº
the timeº
appointed:º
and there diedºº
ofº
the peopleº
from Danºº
even toº
Beershebaº
seventyº
thousandº
men.º |
 24:16
And the angel of the Lord stretched out his hand against Jerusalem to destroy it, and the Lord repented of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, [It is] enough now, withhold thine hand. And the angel of the Lord was by the threshing-floor of Araunah{gr.Orna} the Jebusite. |
 24:16
And when the angelº
stretched outºº
his handº
upon Jerusalemº
to destroyºº
it, Yahwehº
repentedºº
himº
ofº
the evil,º
and saidºº
to the angelº
that destroyedºº
the people,º
It is enough:º
stayºº
nowº
thine hand.º
And the angelº
of Yahwehº
wasº
byº
the threshingplaceº
of Araunahº
the Jebusite.º |
 24:17
And David spoke to the Lord when he saw the angel smiting the people, and he said, Behold, it is I that have done wrong, but these sheep what have they done? Let thy hand, I pray thee, be upon me, and upon my father's house. |
 24:17
And Davidº
spakeºº
untoº
Yahwehº
when he sawººº
the angelº
that smoteºº
the people,º
and said,ºº
Lo,º
Iº
have sinned,ºº
and Iº
have done wickedly:ºº
but theseº
sheep,º
whatº
have they done?ºº
let thine hand,º
I pray thee,º
beº
against me, and against my father'sº
house.º |
 24:18 ¶
And Gad came to David in that day, and said to him, Go up, and set up to the Lord and altar in the threshing-floor of Araunah{gr.Orna} the Jebusite. |
 24:18 ¶
And Gadº
cameºº
thatº
dayº
toº
David,º
and saidºº
unto him, Go up,ºº
rearºº
an altarº
unto Yahwehº
in the threshingfloorº
of Araunahº
the Jebusite.º |
 24:19
And David went up according to the word of Gad, as the Lord commanded him. |
 24:19
And David,º
according to the sayingº
of Gad,º
went upºº
asº
Yahwehº
commanded.ºº |
 24:20
And Araunah{gr.Orna} looked out, and saw the king and his servants coming on before him: and Araunah{gr.Orna} went forth, and did obeisance to the king with his face to the earth. |
 24:20
And Araunahº
looked,ºº
and sawººº
the kingº
and his servantsº
coming onºº
towardº
him: and Araunahº
went out,ºº
and bowedºº
himselfº
before the kingº
on his faceº
upon the ground.º |
 24:21
And Araunah{gr.Orna} said, Why has my lord the king come to his servant? and David said, To buy of thee the threshing-floor, in order to build an altar to the Lord that the plague may be restrained from off the people. |
 24:21
And Araunahº
said,ºº
Whereforeº
is my adonº
the kingº
comeºº
toº
his servant?º
And Davidº
said,ºº
To buyººº
the threshingfloorº
ofºº
thee, to buildºº
an altarº
unto Yahweh,º
that the plagueº
may be stayedºº
fromºº
the people.º |
 24:22
And Araunah{gr.Orna} said to David, Let my lord the king take and offer to the Lord that which is good in his eyes: behold, [here are] oxen for a whole-burnt-offering, and the wheels and furniture of the oxen for wood. |
 24:22
And Araunahº
saidºº
untoº
David,º
Let my adonº
the kingº
takeºº
and offer upºº
what [seemeth] goodº
unto him:º
behold,ºº
[here be] oxenº
for burnt sacrifice,º
and threshing instrumentsº
and [other] instrumentsº
of the oxenº
for wood.º |
 24:23
Araunah{gr.Orna} gave all to the king: and Araunah{gr.Orna} said to the king, The Lord thy God bless thee. |
 24:23
Allº
these [things] did Araunah,º
[as] a king,º
giveºº
untoº
the king.º
And Araunahº
saidºº
unto the king,º
Yahwehº
thy Elohimº
acceptºº
thee. |
 24:24
And the king said to Araunah{gr.Orna}, Nay, but I will surely buy it of thee at a fair price, and I will not offer to the Lord my God a whole-burnt-offering for nothing. So David purchased the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. |
 24:24
And the kingº
saidºº
untoº
Araunah,º
Nay;º
butº
I will surelyºº
buyºº
[it] ofºº
thee at a price:º
neitherº
will I offerºº
burnt offeringsº
unto Yahwehº
my Elohimº
of that whichº
doth cost me nothing.º
So Davidº
boughtººº
the threshingfloorº
and the oxenº
for fiftyº
shekelsº
of silver.º |
 24:25
And David built there an altar to the Lord, and offered up whole-burnt-offerings and peace-offerings: and Solomon made an addition to the altar afterwards, for it was little at first. And the Lord hearkened to the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel. |
 24:25
And Davidº
builtºº
thereº
an altarº
unto Yahweh,º
and offeredºº
burnt offeringsº
and peace offerings.º
So Yahwehº
was intreatedºº
for the land,º
and the plagueº
was stayedºº
fromºº
Israel.º |
