 1:1 ¶
And king David [was] old and advanced in days, and they covered him with clothes, and he was not warmed. |
|
 1:1 ¶
Now kingº
Davidº
was oldºº
[and] strickenºº
in years;º
and they coveredºº
him with clothes,º
but he gat no heat.ººº |
 1:2
And his servants said, Let them seek for the king a young virgin, and she shall wait on the king, and cherish him, and lie with him, and my lord the king shall be warmed. |
 1:2
Wherefore his servantsº
saidºº
unto him, Let there be soughtºº
for my adonº
the kingº
a youngº
virgin:º
and let her standºº
beforeº
the king,º
and let her cherishºº
him, and let her lieºº
in thy bosom,º
that my adonº
the kingº
may get heat.ºº |
 1:3
So they sought for a fair damsel out of all the coasts of Israel; and they found Abisag the Shunammite{gr.Somanite}, and they brought her to the king. |
 1:3
So they soughtºº
for a fairº
damselº
throughout allº
the coastsº
of Israel,º
and foundººº
Abishagº
a Shunammite,º
and broughtºº
her to the king.º |
 1:4
And the damsel was extremely beautiful, and she cherished the king, and ministered to him, but the king knew her not. |
 1:4
And the damselº
[was] veryºº
fair,º
and cherishedºº
the king,º
and ministeredºº
to him: but the kingº
knewºº
her not.º |
 1:5 ¶
And Adonijah{gr.Adonias} the son of Aggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king; and he prepared for himself chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him. |
 1:5 ¶
Then Adonijahº
the sonº
of Haggithº
exaltedºº
himself,º
saying,ºº
Iº
will be king:ºº
and he preparedºº
him chariotsº
and horsemen,º
and fiftyº
menº
to runºº
beforeº
him. |
 1:6
And his father never at any time checked him, saying, Why hast thou done [thus]? and he was also very handsome in appearance, and his mother bore him after Absalom{gr.Abessalom}. |
 1:6
And his fatherº
had notº
displeasedºº
him at any timeºº
in saying,ºº
Whyº
hast thou doneº
so?ººº
and heº
alsoº
[was a] veryº
goodlyºº
[man]; and [his mother] bareºº
him afterº
Absalom.º |
 1:7
And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah{gr.Saruia}, and with Abiathar the priest, and they followed after Adonijah{gr.Adonias}. |
 1:7
And he conferredº
withº
Joabº
the sonº
of Zeruiah,º
and withº
Abiatharº
the priest:º
and they followingº
Adonijahº
helpedºº
[him]. |
 1:8
But Zadok{gr.Sadoc} the priest, and Benaiah{gr.Banaeas} the son of Jehoiada{gr.Jodae}, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei{gr.Semei}, and Resi, and the mighty men of David, did not follow Adonijah{gr.Adonias}. |
 1:8
But Zadokº
the priest,º
and Benaiahº
the sonº
of Jehoiada,º
and Nathanº
the prophet,º
and Shimei,º
and Rei,º
and the mighty menº
whichº
[belonged] to David,º
wereº
notº
withº
Adonijah.º |
 1:9
And Adonijah{gr.Adonias} sacrificed sheep and calves and lambs by the stone of Zoelethi, which was near Rogel: and he called all his brethren, and all the adult [men] of Judah{gr.Juda}, servants of the king. |
 1:9
And Adonijahº
slewºº
sheepº
and oxenº
and fat cattleº
byº
the stoneº
of Zoheleth,º
whichº
[is] byº
Enrogel,º
and calledººº
allº
his brethrenº
the king'sº
sons,º
and allº
the menºº
of Judahº
the king'sº
servants:º |
 1:10
But Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah{gr.Banaeas}, and the mighty [men], and Solomon his brother, he did not call. |
 1:10
But Nathanº
the prophet,º
and Benaiah,º
and the mighty men,º
and Solomonº
his brother,º
he calledºº
not.º |
 1:11 ¶
And Nathan spoke to Beersheba{gr.Bersabee} the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah{gr.Adonias} the son of Aggith reigns, and our lord David knows it not? |
 1:11 ¶
Wherefore Nathanº
spakeºº
untoº
Bathshebaº
the motherº
of Solomon,º
saying,ºº
Hast thou notº
heardºº
thatº
Adonijahº
the sonº
of Haggithº
doth reign,ºº
and Davidº
our adonº
knowethºº
[it] not?º |
 1:12
And now come, let me, I pray, give thee counsel, and thou shalt rescue thy life, and the life of thy son Solomon. |
 1:12
Nowº
therefore come,ººº
let me, I pray thee,º
giveº
thee counsel,ººº
that thou mayest saveººº
thine own life,º
and the lifeº
of thy sonº
Solomon.º |
 1:13
Haste, and go in to king David, and thou shalt speak to him, saying, Hast not thou, my lord, O king, sworn to thine handmaid, saying, Thy son Solomon shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then does Adonijah{gr.Adonias} reign? |
 1:13
Goººº
and get thee inºº
untoº
kingº
David,º
and sayºº
untoº
him, Didst notº
thou,º
my adon,º
O king,º
swearºº
unto thine handmaid,º
saying,ºº
Assuredlyº
Solomonº
thy sonº
shall reignºº
afterº
me, and heº
shall sitºº
uponº
my throne?º
whyº
then doth Adonijahº
reign?ºº |
 1:14
And behold, while thou art still speaking there with the king, I also will come in after thee, and will confirm thy words. |
 1:14
Behold,º
while thou yetº
talkestºº
thereº
withº
the king,º
Iº
also will come inºº
afterº
thee, and confirmººº
thy words.º |
 1:15 ¶
So Beersheba{gr.Bersabee} went in to the king into the chamber: and the king was very old, and Abisag the Shunammite{gr.Somanite} was ministering to the king. |
 1:15 ¶
And Bathshebaº
went inºº
untoº
the kingº
into the chamber:º
and the kingº
was veryº
old;ºº
and Abishagº
the Shunammiteº
ministeredºº
untoºº
the king.º |
 1:16
And Beersheba{gr.Bersabee} bowed, and did obeisance to the king; and the king said, What is thy request? |
 1:16
And Bathshebaº
bowed,ºº
and did obeisanceºº
unto the king.º
And the kingº
said,ºº
Whatº
wouldest thou? |
 1:17
And she said, My lord, thou didst swear by the Lord thy God to thine handmaid, saying, Thy son Solomon shall reign after me, and shall sit upon my throne. |
 1:17
And she saidºº
unto him, My adon,º
thouº
swarestºº
by Yahwehº
thy Elohimº
unto thine handmaid,º
[saying], Assuredlyº
Solomonº
thy sonº
shall reignºº
afterº
me, and heº
shall sitºº
uponº
my throne.º |
 1:18
And now, behold, Adonijah{gr.Adonias} reigns, and thou, my lord, O king, knowest [it] not. |
 1:18
And now,º
behold,º
Adonijahº
reigneth;ºº
and now,º
my adonº
the king,º
thou knowestºº
[it] not:º |
 1:19
And he has sacrificed calves and lambs and sheep in abundance, and has called all the king's sons, and Abiathar the priest and Joab the commander-in-chief of the host; but Solomon thy servant he has not called. |
 1:19
And he hath slainºº
oxenº
and fat cattleº
and sheepº
in abundance,º
and hath calledºº
allº
the sonsº
of the king,º
and Abiatharº
the priest,º
and Joabº
the captainº
of the host:º
but Solomonº
thy servantº
hath he notº
called.ºº |
 1:20
And thou, my lord, O king,-- the eyes of all Israel [are] upon thee, to tell them who shall sit upon the throne of my lord the king after him. |
 1:20
And thou,º
my adon,º
O king,º
the eyesº
of allº
Israelº
[are] uponº
thee, that thou shouldest tellºº
them whoº
shall sitºº
onº
the throneº
of my adonº
the kingº
afterº
him. |
 1:21
And it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and Solomon my son shall be offenders. |
 1:21
Otherwise it shall come to pass,º
when my adonº
the kingº
shall sleepºº
withº
his fathers,º
that Iº
and my sonº
Solomonº
shall be countedº
offenders.º |
 1:22 ¶
And behold, while she was yet talking with the king, Nathan the prophet came. And it was reported to the king, |
 1:22 ¶
And, lo,º
while she yetº
talkedºº
withº
the king,º
Nathanº
the prophetº
also came in.ºº |
 1:23
Behold, Nathan the prophet [is here]: and he came in to the king's presence, and did obeisance to the king with his face to the ground. |
 1:23
And they toldºº
the king,º
saying,ºº
Beholdº
Nathanº
the prophet.º
And when he was come inºº
beforeº
the king,º
he bowedºº
himselfº
before the kingº
withº
his faceº
to the ground.º |
 1:24
And Nathan said, My lord, O king, didst thou say, Adonijah{gr.Adonias} shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? |
 1:24
And Nathanº
said,ºº
My adon,º
O king,º
hast thouº
said,ºº
Adonijahº
shall reignºº
afterº
me, and heº
shall sitºº
uponº
my throne?º |
 1:25
For he has gone down to-day, and has sacrificed calves and lambs and sheep in abundance, and has called all the king's sons, and the chiefs of the army, and Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they are eating and drinking before him, and they said, [Long] live king Adonijah{gr.Adonias}. |
 1:25
Forº
he is gone downºº
this day,º
and hath slainºº
oxenº
and fat cattleº
and sheepº
in abundance,º
and hath calledºº
allº
the king'sº
sons,º
and the captainsº
of the host,º
and Abiatharº
the priest;º
and, behold,º
they eatºº
and drinkºº
beforeº
him, and say,ºº
God saveºº
kingº
Adonijah.º |
 1:26
But he has not invited me thy servant, and Zadok{gr.Sadoc} the priest, and Benaiah{gr.Banaeas} the son of Jehoiada{gr.Jodae}, and Solomon thy servant. |
 1:26
But me, [even] meº
thy servant,º
and Zadokº
the priest,º
and Benaiahº
the sonº
of Jehoiada,º
and thy servantº
Solomon,º
hath he notº
called.ºº |
 1:27
Has this matter happened by the authority of my lord the king, and hast thou not made known to thy servant who shall sit upon the throne of my lord the king after him? |
 1:27
Is thisº
thingº
doneºº
byºº
my adonº
the king,º
and thou hast notº
shewedºº
[it] untoºº
thy servant,º
whoº
should sitºº
onº
the throneº
of my adonº
the kingº
afterº
him? |
 1:28 ¶
And king David answered and said, Call me Beersheba{gr.Bersabee}: and she came in before the king, and stood before him. |
 1:28 ¶
Then kingº
Davidº
answeredºº
and said,ºº
Callºº
me Bathsheba.º
And she cameºº
intoº
the king'sº
presence,º
and stoodºº
beforeº
the king.º |
 1:29
And the king swore, and said, [As] the Lord lives who redeemed my soul out of all affliction, |
 1:29
And the kingº
sware,ºº
and said,ºº
[As] Yahwehº
liveth,º
thatº
hath redeemedººº
my soulº
out of allºº
distress,º |
 1:30
as I swore to thee by the Lord God of Israel, saying, Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead, so will I do this day. |
 1:30
Evenº
asº
I swareºº
unto thee by Yahwehº
Elohimº
of Israel,º
saying,ºº
Assuredlyº
Solomonº
thy sonº
shall reignºº
afterº
me, and heº
shall sitºº
uponº
my throneº
in my stead;º
evenº
soº
will I certainly doºº
thisº
day.º |
 1:31
And Beersheba{gr.Bersabee} bowed with her face to the ground, and did obeisance to the king, and said, Let my lord king David live for ever. |
 1:31
Then Bathshebaº
bowedºº
with [her] faceº
to the earth,º
and did reverenceºº
to the king,º
and said,ºº
Let my adonº
kingº
Davidº
liveºº
for ever.º |
 1:32 ¶
And king David said, Call me Zadok{gr.Sadoc} the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah{gr.Banaeas} the son of Jehoiada{gr.Jodae}: and they came in before the king. |
 1:32 ¶
And kingº
Davidº
said,ºº
Callºº
me Zadokº
the priest,º
and Nathanº
the prophet,º
and Benaiahº
the sonº
of Jehoiada.º
And they cameºº
beforeº
the king.º |
 1:33
And the king said to them, Take the servants of your lord with you, and mount my son Solomon upon my own mule, and bring him down to Gion. |
 1:33
The kingº
also saidºº
unto them, Takeºº
withº
youº
the servantsº
of your adon,º
and causeº
Solomonº
my sonº
to rideºº
uponº
mine own mule,º
and bring him downººº
toº
Gihon:º |
 1:34
And there let Zadok{gr.Sadoc} the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him to be king over Israel, and do ye sound the trumpet, and ye shall say, Let king Solomon live. |
 1:34
And let Zadokº
the priestº
and Nathanº
the prophetº
anointºº
him thereº
kingº
overº
Israel:º
and blowºº
ye with the trumpet,º
and say,ºº
God saveºº
kingº
Solomon.º |
 1:35
And he shall sit upon my throne, and reign in my stead: and I have given charge that he should be for a prince over Israel and Judah{gr.Juda}. |
 1:35
Then ye shall come upºº
afterº
him, that he may comeºº
and sitºº
uponº
my throne;º
for heº
shall be kingºº
in my stead:º
and I have appointedºº
him to beº
rulerº
overº
Israelº
and overº
Judah.º |
 1:36
And Benaiah{gr.Banaeas} the son of Jehoiada{gr.Jodae} answered the king and said, So let it be: may the Lord God of my lord the king confirm [it]. |
 1:36
And Benaiahº
the sonº
of Jehoiadaº
answeredººº
the king,º
and said,ºº
Amen:º
Yahwehº
Elohimº
of my adonº
the kingº
sayºº
soº
[too]. |
 1:37
As the Lord was with my lord the king, so let him be with Solomon, and let him exalt his throne beyond the throne of my lord king David. |
 1:37
Asº
Yahwehº
hath beenº
withº
my adonº
the king,º
even soº
beº
he withº
Solomon,º
and makeºº
his throneº
greaterºººº
than the throneºº
of my adonº
kingº
David.º |
 1:38
And Zadok{gr.Sadoc} the priest went down, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah{gr.Banaeas} son of Jehoiada{gr.Jodae}, and the Cherethite, and the Pelethite{gr.Phelethite}, and they mounted Solomon upon the mule of king David, and led him away to Gion. |
 1:38
So Zadokº
the priest,º
and Nathanº
the prophet,º
and Benaiahº
the sonº
of Jehoiada,º
and the Cherethites,º
and the Pelethites,º
went down,ºº
and causedº
Solomonº
to rideºº
uponº
kingº
David'sº
mule,º
and broughtººº
him toº
Gihon.º |
 1:39
And Zadok{gr.Sadoc} the priest took the horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon, and blew the trumpet; and all the people said, Let king Solomon live. |
 1:39
And Zadokº
the priestº
tookººº
an hornº
of oilº
out ofº
the tabernacle,º
and anointedººº
Solomon.º
And they blewºº
the trumpet;º
and allº
the peopleº
said,ºº
God saveºº
kingº
Solomon.º |
 1:40
And all the people went up after him, and they danced in choirs, and rejoiced with great joy, and the earth quaked with their voice. |
 1:40
And allº
the peopleº
came upºº
afterº
him, and the peopleº
pipedºº
with pipes,º
and rejoicedº
with greatº
joy,º
so that the earthº
rentºº
with the soundº
of them. |
 1:41 ¶
And Adonijah{gr.Adonias} and all his guests heard, and they had [just] left off eating: and Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, and said, What [means] the voice of the city in tumult? |
 1:41 ¶
And Adonijahº
and allº
the guestsºº
thatº
[were] withº
him heardºº
[it] as theyº
had made an endºº
of eating.ºº
And when Joabº
heardººº
the soundº
of the trumpet,º
he said,ºº
Whereforeº
[is this] noiseº
of the cityº
being in an uproar?ºº |
 1:42
While he was yet speaking, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came in: and Adonijah{gr.Adonias} said, Come in, for thou art a mighty man, and [thou comest] to bring glad tidings. |
 1:42
And while he yetº
spake,ºº
behold,º
Jonathanº
the sonº
of Abiatharº
the priestº
came:ºº
and Adonijahº
saidºº
unto him, Come in;ºº
forº
thouº
[art] a valiantº
man,ººº
and bringestºº
goodº
tidings.ººº |
 1:43
And Jonathan answered and said, Verily our lord king David has made Solomon king: |
 1:43
And Jonathanº
answeredºº
and saidºº
to Adonijah,º
Verilyº
our adonº
kingº
Davidº
hath made Solomonº
king.ºººº |
 1:44
and the king has sent with him Zadok{gr.Sadoc} the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah{gr.Banaeas} the son of Jehoiada{gr.Jodae}, and the Cherethite, and the Pelethite{gr.Phelethite}, and they have mounted him on the king's mule; |
 1:44
And the kingº
hath sentºº
withº
himº
Zadokº
the priest,º
and Nathanº
the prophet,º
and Benaiahº
the sonº
of Jehoiada,º
and the Cherethites,º
and the Pelethites,º
and they have caused him to rideººº
uponº
the king'sº
mule:º |
 1:45
and Zadok{gr.Sadoc} the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him in Gion, and have gone up thence rejoicing, and the city resounded: this [is] the sound which ye have heard. |
 1:45
And Zadokº
the priestº
and Nathanº
the prophetº
have anointedºº
him kingº
in Gihon:º
and they are come upºº
from thenceºº
rejoicing,º
so that the cityº
rangº
again.ºº
Thisº
[is] the noiseº
thatº
ye have heard.ºº |
 1:46
And Solomon is seated upon the throne of the kingdom. |
 1:46
And alsoº
Solomonº
sittethºº
onº
the throneº
of the kingdom.º |
 1:47
And the servants of the king have gone in to bless our lord king David, saying, God make the name of Solomon better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy throne; and the king worshipped upon his bed. |
 1:47
And moreoverº
the king'sº
servantsº
cameºº
to blessººº
our adonº
kingº
David,º
saying,ºº
Elohimº
makeº
the nameº
of Solomonº
betterºº
than thy name,ºº
and makeººº
his throneº
greaterºº
than thy throne.ºº
And the kingº
bowedºº
himselfº
uponº
the bed.º |
 1:48
Moreover thus said the king, Blessed [be] the Lord God of Israel, who has this day appointed one of my seed sitting on my throne, and my eyes see it. |
 1:48
And alsoº
thusº
saidºº
the king,º
Blessedºº
[be] Yahwehº
Elohimº
of Israel,º
whichº
hath givenºº
[one] to sitºº
onº
my throneº
this day,º
mine eyesº
even seeingºº
[it]. |
 1:49
And all the guests of Adonijah{gr.Adonias} were dismayed, and every man went his way. |
 1:49
And allº
the guestsºº
thatº
[were] with Adonijahº
were afraid,ºº
and rose up,ºº
and wentººº
every manº
his way.º |
 1:50 ¶
And Adonijah{gr.Adonias} feared because of Solomon, and arose, and departed, and laid hold on the horns of the altar. |
 1:50 ¶
And Adonijahº
fearedºº
becauseºº
of Solomon,º
and arose,ºº
and went,ººº
and caught holdºº
on the hornsº
of the altar.º |
 1:51
And it was reported to Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah{gr.Adonias} fears king Solomon, and holds the horns of the altar, saying, Let Solomon swear to me this day, that he will not slay his servant with the sword. |
 1:51
And it was toldºº
Solomon,º
saying,ºº
Behold,º
Adonijahº
fearethººº
kingº
Solomon:º
for, lo,º
he hath caught holdºº
on the hornsº
of the altar,º
saying,ºº
Let kingº
Solomonº
swearºº
unto me to dayº
that he will notº
slayººº
his servantº
with the sword.º |
 1:52
And Solomon said, If he should be a valiant man, there shall not a hair of his fall to the ground; but if evil be found in him, he shall die. |
 1:52
And Solomonº
said,ºº
Ifº
he will shewº
himself a worthyº
man,º
there shall notº
an hairº
ofºº
him fallºº
to the earth:º
but ifº
wickednessº
shall be foundºº
in him, he shall die.ºº |
 1:53
And king Solomon sent, and they brought him away from the altar; and he went in and did obeisance to king Solomon: and Solomon said to him, Go to thy house. |
 1:53
So kingº
Solomonº
sent,ºº
and they brought him downºº
fromºº
the altar.º
And he cameºº
and bowedºº
himselfº
to kingº
Solomon:º
and Solomonº
saidºº
unto him, Goººº
to thine house.º |
