 13:1 ¶
And it happened after this that Absalom{gr.Abessalom} the son of David had a very beautiful sister, and her name [was] Tamar{gr.Themar}; and Amnon the son of David loved her. |
|
 13:1 ¶
And it came to passº
afterº
this,º
that Absalomº
the sonº
of Davidº
had a fairº
sister,º
whose nameº
[was] Tamar;º
and Amnonº
the sonº
of Davidº
lovedºº
her. |
 13:2
And Amnon was distressed even to sickness, because of Tamar{gr.Themar} his sister; for she was a virgin, and it seemed very difficult for Amnon to do anything to her. |
 13:2
And Amnonº
was so vexed,ººº
that he fell sickºº
forº
his sisterº
Tamar;º
forº
sheº
[was] a virgin;º
and Amnonº
thoughtº
it hardºº
for him to doºº
any thingº
to her. |
 13:3
And Amnon had a friend, and his name [was] Jonadab, the son of Samaa the brother of David: and Jonadab [was] a very cunning man. |
 13:3
But Amnonº
had a friend,º
whose nameº
[was] Jonadab,º
the sonº
of Shimeahº
David'sº
brother:º
and Jonadabº
[was] a veryº
subtilº
man.º |
 13:4
And he said to him, What ails thee that thou art thus weak? O son of the king, morning by morning? wilt thou not tell me? and Ammon said, I love Tamar{gr.Themar} the sister of my brother Absalom{gr.Abessalom}. |
 13:4
And he saidºº
unto him, Whyº
[art] thou,º
[being] the king'sº
son,º
leanºº
from dayº
to day?º
wilt thou notº
tellºº
me? And Amnonº
saidºº
unto him, Iº
loveººº
Tamar,º
my brotherº
Absalom'sº
sister.º |
 13:5
And Jonadab said to him, Lie upon thy bed, and make thyself sick, and thy father shall come in to see thee; and thou shalt say to him, Let, I pray thee, Tamar{gr.Themar} my sister come, and feed me with morsels, and let her prepare food before my eyes, that I may see and eat at her hands. |
 13:5
And Jonadabºº
saidºº
unto him, Lay thee downºº
onº
thy bed,º
and make thyself sick:ºº
and when thy fatherº
comethºº
to seeºº
thee, sayºº
untoº
him, I pray thee,º
let my sisterº
Tamarº
come,ºº
and giveºº
me meat,º
and dressººº
the meatº
in my sight,º
thatºº
I may seeºº
[it], and eatºº
[it] at her hand.ºº |
 13:6 ¶
So Ammon lay down, and made himself sick; and the king came in to see him: and Amnon said to the king, Let, I pray thee, my sister Tamar{gr.Themar} come to me, and make a couple of cakes in my sight, and I will eat them at her hand. |
 13:6 ¶
So Amnonº
lay down,ºº
and made himself sick:ºº
and when the kingº
was comeºº
to seeºº
him, Amnonº
saidºº
untoº
the king,º
I pray thee,º
let Tamarº
my sisterº
come,ºº
and makeºº
me a coupleº
of cakesº
in my sight,º
that I may eatºº
at her hand.ºº |
 13:7
And David sent to Tamar{gr.Themar} to the house, saying, Go now to thy brother's house, and dress him food. |
 13:7
Then Davidº
sentºº
homeº
toº
Tamar,º
saying,ºº
Goººº
nowº
to thy brotherº
Amnon'sº
house,º
and dressºº
him meat.º |
 13:8
And Tamar{gr.Themar} went to the house of her brother Amnon, and he [was] lying down: and she took the dough and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and baked the cakes. |
 13:8
So Tamarº
wentººº
to her brotherº
Amnon'sº
house;º
and heº
was laid down.ºº
And she tookººº
flour,º
and kneadedºº
[it], and made cakesºº
in his sight,º
and did bakeººº
the cakes.º |
 13:9
And she took the frying pan and poured them out before him, but he would not eat. And Amnon said, Send out every man from about me. And they removed every man from about him. |
 13:9
And she tookººº
a pan,º
and poured [them] outºº
beforeº
him; but he refusedºº
to eat.ºº
And Amnonº
said,ºº
Have outºº
allº
menº
fromºº
me. And they went outºº
everyº
manº
fromºº
him. |
 13:10
And Amnon said to Tamar{gr.Themar}, Bring in the food into the closet, and I will eat of thy hand. And Tamar{gr.Themar} took the cakes which she had made, and brought them to her brother Amnon into the chamber. |
 13:10
And Amnonº
saidºº
untoº
Tamar,º
Bringºº
the meatº
into the chamber,º
that I may eatºº
of thine hand.ºº
And Tamarº
tookººº
the cakesº
whichº
she had made,ºº
and broughtºº
[them] into the chamberº
to Amnonº
her brother.º |
 13:11
And she brought [them] to him to eat, and he caught hold of her, and said to her, Come, lie with me, my sister. |
 13:11
And when she had broughtºº
[them] untoº
him to eat,ºº
he took holdºº
of her, and saidºº
unto her, Comeºº
lieºº
withº
me, my sister.º |
 13:12
And she said to him, Nay, my brother, do not humble me, for it ought not to be so done in Israel; do not this folly. |
 13:12
And she answeredºº
him, Nay,º
my brother,º
do notº
forceºº
me; forº
noº
such thingº
oughtº
to be doneºº
in Israel:º
doºº
notº
thouº
thisº
folly.º |
 13:13
And I, whither shall I remove my reproach? and thou shalt be as one of the fools in Israel. And now, speak, I pray thee, to the king, for surely he will not keep me from thee. |
 13:13
And I,º
whitherº
shall I causeº
my shameº
to go?ººº
and as for thee,º
thou shalt beº
as oneº
of the foolsº
in Israel.º
Nowº
therefore, I pray thee,º
speakºº
untoº
the king;º
forº
he will notº
withholdºº
me fromº
thee. |
 13:14
But Amnon would not hearken to her voice; and he prevailed against her, and humbled her, and lay with her. |
 13:14
Howbeit he wouldºº
notº
hearkenºº
unto her voice:º
but, being strongerºº
than she, forcedºº
her, and layºº
withº
her. |
 13:15 ¶
Then Amnon hated her with very great hatred; for the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her, for the last wickedness was greater than the first: and Amnon said to her, Rise, and be gone. |
 13:15 ¶
Then Amnonº
hatedºº
her exceedingly;ººº
so thatº
the hatredº
wherewithº
he hatedºº
her [was] greaterº
than the loveºº
wherewithº
he had lovedºº
her. And Amnonº
saidºº
unto her, Arise,ºº
be gone.ººº |
 13:16
And Tamar{gr.Themar} spoke to him concerning this great mischief, greater, [said she], than the other that thou didst me, to send me away: but Amnon would not hearken to her voice. |
 13:16
And she saidºº
unto him, [There is] noº
cause:º
thisº
evilº
in sending me awayºº
[is] greaterº
than the otherºº
thatº
thou didstºº
untoº
me. But he wouldºº
notº
hearkenºº
unto her. |
 13:17
And he called his servant who had charge of the house, and said to him, Put now this [woman] out from me, and shut the door after her. |
 13:17
Then he calledººº
his servantº
that ministeredºº
unto him, and said,ºº
Putºº
nowºº
thisº
[woman] outº
from me,ººº
and boltºº
the doorº
afterº
her. |
 13:18
And she had on her a variegated robe, for so were the king's daughters that were virgins attired in their apparel: and his servant led her forth, and shut the door after her. |
 13:18
And [she had] a garmentº
of divers coloursº
uponº
her: forº
with suchº
robesº
were the king'sº
daughtersº
[that were] virginsº
apparelled.ºº
Then his servantºº
broughtºº
her out,º
and boltedºº
the doorº
afterº
her. |
 13:19 ¶
And Tamar{gr.Themar} took ashes, and put them on her head; and she rent the variegated garment that was upon her: and she laid her hands on her head, and went crying continually. |
 13:19 ¶
And Tamarº
putºº
ashesº
onº
her head,º
and rentºº
her garmentº
of divers coloursº
thatº
[was] onº
her, and laidºº
her handº
onº
her head,º
and wentºº
onºº
crying.ºº |
 13:20
And Absalom{gr.Abessalom} her brother said to her, Has thy brother Amnon been with thee? now then, my sister, be silent, for he is thy brother: be not careful to mention this matter. So Tamar{gr.Themar} dwelt as a widow in the house of her brother Absalom{gr.Abessalom}. |
 13:20
And Absalomº
her brotherº
saidºº
untoº
her, Hath Amnonº
thy brotherº
beenº
withº
thee? but holdº
nowº
thy peace,ºº
my sister:º
heº
[is] thy brother;º
regardºººº
notº
thisº
thing.º
So Tamarº
remainedºº
desolateºº
in her brotherº
Absalom'sº
house.º |
 13:21 ¶
And king David heard of all these things, and was very angry; but he did not grieve the spirit of his son Amnon, because be loved him, for he was his first-born. |
 13:21 ¶
But when kingº
Davidº
heardºº
ofº
allº
theseº
things,º
he was veryº
wroth.ºº |
 13:22
And Absalom{gr.Abessalom} spoke not to Amnon, good or bad, because Absalom{gr.Abessalom} hated Amnon, on account of his humbling his sister Tamar{gr.Themar}. |
 13:22
And Absalomº
spakeºº
untoº
his brother Amnonº
neitherº
goodº
norº
bad:ºº
forº
Absalomº
hatedººº
Amnon,º
becauseººº
he had forcedººº
his sisterº
Tamar.º |
 13:23 ¶
And it came to pass at the end of two whole years, that they were shearing [sheep] for Absalom{gr.Abessalom} in Belasor near Ephraim: and Absalom{gr.Abessalom} invited all the king's sons. |
 13:23 ¶
And it came to passº
after two fullº
years,ºº
that Absalomº
hadº
sheepshearersºº
in Baalhazor,º
whichº
[is] besideº
Ephraim:º
and Absalomº
invitedºº
allº
the king'sº
sons.º |
 13:24
And Absalom{gr.Abessalom} came to the king, and said, Behold, thy servant has a sheep-shearing; let now the king and his servants go with thy servant. |
 13:24
And Absalomº
cameºº
toº
the king,º
and said,ºº
Beholdº
now,º
thy servantº
hath sheepshearers;ºº
letºº
the king,º
I beseech thee,º
and his servantsº
goººº
withº
thy servant.º |
 13:25
And the king said to Absalom{gr.Abessalom}, Nay, my son, let us not all go, and let us not be burdensome to thee. And he pressed him; but he would not go, but blessed him. |
 13:25
And the kingº
saidºº
toº
Absalom,º
Nay,º
my son,º
let us notº
allº
nowº
go,ººº
lestº
we be chargeableºº
untoº
thee. And he pressedºº
him: howbeit he wouldºº
notº
go,ººº
but blessedºº
him. |
 13:26
And Absalom{gr.Abessalom} said to him, And if not, let I pray thee, my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said to him, Why should he go with thee? |
 13:26
Then saidºº
Absalom,º
If not,º
I pray thee,º
let my brotherº
Amnonº
goººº
withº
us. And the kingº
saidºº
unto him, Whyº
should he goººº
withº
thee? |
 13:27
And Absalom{gr.Abessalom} pressed him, and he sent with him Amnon and all the king's sons; and Absalom{gr.Abessalom} made a banquet like the banquet of the king. |
 13:27
But Absalomº
pressedºº
him, that he letº
Amnonº
and allº
the king'sº
sonsº
goºº
withº
him. |
 13:28 ¶
And Absalom{gr.Abessalom} charged his servants, saying, Mark when the heart of Amnon shall be merry with wine, and I shall say to you, Smite Amnon, and slay him: fear not; for is it not I that command you? Be courageous, and be valiant. |
 13:28 ¶
Now Absalomº
had commandedººº
his servants,º
saying,ºº
Markºº
ye nowº
when Amnon'sº
heartº
is merryºº
with wine,º
and when I sayºº
untoº
you, Smiteººº
Amnon;º
then killºº
him, fearºº
not:º
have notº
Iº
commandedºº
you? be courageous,ºº
and beº
valiant.ºº |
 13:29
And the servants of Absalom{gr.Abessalom} did to Amnon as Absalom{gr.Abessalom} commanded them: and all the sons of the king rose up, and they mounted every man his mule, and fled. |
 13:29
And the servantsº
of Absalomº
didºº
unto Amnonº
asº
Absalomº
had commanded.ºº
Then allº
the king'sº
sonsº
arose,ºº
and every manº
gat him upºº
uponº
his mule,º
and fled.ºº |
 13:30 ¶
And it came to pass, when they were in the way, that a report came to David, saying, Absalom{gr.Abessalom} has slain all the king's sons, and there is not one of them left. |
 13:30 ¶
And it came to pass,º
while theyº
were in the way,º
that tidingsº
cameºº
toº
David,º
saying,ºº
Absalomº
hath slainººº
allº
the king'sº
sons,º
and there is notº
oneº
ofº
them left.ºº |
 13:31
Then the king arose, and rent his garments, and lay upon the ground: and all his servants that were standing round him rent their garments. |
 13:31
Then the kingº
arose,ºº
and tareººº
his garments,º
and layºº
on the earth;º
and allº
his servantsº
stoodºº
byº
with their clothesº
rent.ºº |
 13:32
And Jonadab the son of Samaa brother of David, answered and said, Let not my Lord the king say that he has slain all the young men the sons of the king, for Amnon only of them all is dead; for he was appointed [to death] by the mouth of Absalom{gr.Abessalom} from the day that he humbled his sister Tamar{gr.Themar}. |
 13:32
And Jonadab,º
the sonº
of Shimeahº
David'sº
brother,º
answeredºº
and said,ºº
Let notº
my adonº
supposeºº
[that] they have slainººº
allº
the young menº
the king'sº
sons;º
forº
Amnonº
onlyº
is dead:ºº
forº
byº
the appointmentº
of Absalomº
this hath beenº
determinedºº
from the dayºº
that he forcedººº
his sisterº
Tamar.º |
 13:33
And now let not my lord the king take the matter to heart, saying, All the king's sons are dead: for Amnon only of them is dead. |
 13:33
Nowº
therefore let notº
my adonº
the kingº
takeºº
the thingº
toº
his heart,º
to thinkºº
that allº
the king'sº
sonsº
are dead:ºº
forºº
Amnonº
onlyº
is dead.ºº |
 13:34
And Absalom{gr.Abessalom} escaped: and the young man the watchman, lifted up his eyes, and looked; and, behold, much people went in the way behind him from the side of the mountain in the descent: and the watchman came and told the king, and said, I have seen men by the way of Oronen, by the side of the mountain. |
 13:34
But Absalomº
fled.ºº
And the young manº
that kept the watchºº
lifted upººº
his eyes,º
and looked,ºº
and, behold,º
there cameºº
muchº
peopleº
by the wayºº
of the hillº
sideººº
behindº
him. |
 13:35
And Jonadab said to the king, Behold, the king's sons are present: according to the word of thy servant, so has it happened. |
 13:35
And Jonadabº
saidºº
untoº
the king,º
Behold,º
the king'sº
sonsº
come:ºº
as thy servantº
said,º
soº
it is.º |
 13:36
And it came to pass when he had finished speaking, that, behold, the king's sons came, and lifted up their voices and wept: and the king also and all his servants wept with a very great weeping. |
 13:36
And it came to pass,º
as soon as he had made an endºº
of speaking,ºº
that, behold,º
the king'sº
sonsº
came,ºº
and lifted upºº
their voiceº
and wept:ºº
and the kingº
alsoº
and allº
his servantsº
weptºº
veryº
sore.ºº |
 13:37 ¶
But Absalom{gr.Abessalom} fled, and went to Talmai{gr.Tholmi} son of Emiud the king of Geshur{gr.Gedsur} to the land of Chamaachad: and king David mourned for his son continually. |
 13:37 ¶
But Absalomº
fled,ºº
and wentººº
toº
Talmai,º
the sonº
of Ammihud,ººº
kingº
of Geshur.º
And [David] mournedºº
forº
his sonº
everyº
day.º |
 13:38
So Absalom{gr.Abessalom} fled, and departed to Geshur{gr.Gedsur}, and was there three years. |
 13:38
So Absalomº
fled,ºº
and wentººº
to Geshur,º
and wasº
thereº
threeº
years.º |
 13:39
And king David ceased to go out after Absalom{gr.Abessalom}, for he was comforted concerning Amnon, touching his death. |
 13:39
And [the soul of] kingº
Davidº
longedºº
to go forthºº
untoº
Absalom:º
forº
he was comfortedºº
concerningº
Amnon,º
seeingº
he was dead.ºº |
