 11:1 ¶ And it came to pass when the time o the year for kings going out [to battle] had come round, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah{gr.Rabbath}: but David remained at Jerusalem.

 11:1 ¶ And it came to pass,º after the yearº was expired,º at the timeº when kingsººº go forthºº [to battle], that Davidº sentººº Joab,º and his servantsº withº him, and allº Israel;º and they destroyedººº the childrenº of Ammon,º and besiegedººº Rabbah.º But Davidº tarriedº stillºº at Jerusalem.º

 11:2 ¶ And it came to pass toward evening, that David arose off his couch, and walked on the roof of the king's house, and saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.

 11:2 ¶ And it came to passº in an eveningtide,ºº that Davidº aroseºº from offºº his bed,º and walkedºº uponº the roofº of the king'sº house:º and fromºº the roofº he sawºº a womanº washingºº herself; and the womanº [was] veryº beautifulº to lookº upon.º

 11:3 And David sent and enquired about the woman: and [one] said, [Is] not this Beersheba{gr.Bersabee} the daughter of Aholiab{gr.Eliab}, the wife of Uriah{gr.Urias} the Hittite{gr.Chettite}?

 11:3 And Davidº sentºº and enquiredºº after the woman.º And [one] said,ºº [Is] notº thisº Bathsheba,º the daughterº of Eliam,º the wifeº of Uriahº the Hittite?º

 11:4 And David sent messengers, and took her, and went in to her, and he lay with her: and she was purified from her uncleanness, and returned to her house.

 11:4 And Davidº sentºº messengers,º and tookºº her; and she cameº inºº untoº him, and he layºº with her;º for sheº was purifiedºº from her uncleanness:ºº and she returnedºº untoº her house.º

 11:5 And the woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, I am with child.

 11:5 And the womanº conceived,ºº and sentºº and toldºº David,º and said,ºº Iº [am] with child.º

 11:6 ¶ And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah{gr.Urias} the Hittite{gr.Chettite}; and Joab sent Uriah{gr.Urias} to David.

 11:6 ¶ And Davidº sentºº toº Joab,º [saying], Sendººº meº Uriahº the Hittite.º And Joabº sentººº Uriahº toº David.º

 11:7 And Uriah{gr.Urias} arrived and went in to him, and David asked him how Joab was, and how the people were, and how the war went on.

 11:7 And when Uriahº was comeºº untoº him, Davidº demandedºº [of him] how Joabº did,º and how the peopleº did,º and how the warº prospered.º

 11:8 And David said to Uriah{gr.Urias}, Go to thy house, and wash thy feet: and Uriah{gr.Urias} departed from the house of the king, and a portion [of meat] from the king followed him.

 11:8 And Davidº saidºº to Uriah,º Go downºº to thy house,º and washºº thy feet.º And Uriahº departedº outºº of the king'sº house,ººº and there followedºº him a messº [of meat] from the king.º

 11:9 And Uriah{gr.Urias} slept at the door of the king with the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.

 11:9 But Uriahº sleptºº at the doorº of the king'sº houseº withº allº the servantsº of his adon,º and wentº notº downºº toº his house.º

 11:10 And they brought David word, saying, Uriah{gr.Urias} has not gone down to his house. And David said to Uriah{gr.Urias}, Art thou not come from a journey? why hast thou not gone down to thy house?

 11:10 And when they had toldºº David,º saying,ºº Uriahº went not downººº untoº his house,º Davidº saidºº untoº Uriah,º Camestºº thouº notº from [thy] journey?ºº whyº [then] didst thou notº go downºº untoº thine house?º

 11:11 And Uriah{gr.Urias} said to David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah{gr.Juda} dwell in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; and shall I go into my house to eat and drink, and lie with my wife? how [should I do this? as] thy soul lives, I will not do this thing.

 11:11 And Uriahº saidºº untoº David,º The ark,º and Israel,º and Judah,º abideºº in tents;º and my adonº Joab,º and the servantsº of my adon,º are encampedºº inº the openº fields;º shall Iº then goºº intoº mine house,º to eatºº and to drink,ºº and to lieºº withº my wife?º [as] thou livest,º and [as] thy soulº liveth,º I will not doººº thisº thing.º

 11:12 And David said to Uriah{gr.Urias}, Remain here to-day also, and to-morrow I will let thee go. So Uriah{gr.Urias} remained in Jerusalem that day and the day following.

 11:12 And Davidº saidºº toº Uriah,º Tarryºº hereº to dayº also,º and to morrowº I will let thee depart.ºº So Uriahº abodeºº in Jerusalemº thatº day,º and the morrow.ºº

 11:13 And David called him, and he ate before him and drank, and he made him drunk: and he went out in the evening to lie upon his bed with the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.

 11:13 And when Davidº had calledºº him, he did eatºº and drinkºº beforeº him; and he made him drunk:ºº and at evenº he went outºº to lieºº on his bedº withº the servantsº of his adon,º but wentº notº downºº toº his house.º

 11:14 ¶ And the morning came, and David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah{gr.Urias}.

 11:14 ¶ And it came to passº in the morning,º that Davidº wroteºº a letterº toº Joab,º and sentºº [it] by the handº of Uriah.º

 11:15 And he wrote in the letter, saying, Station Uriah{gr.Urias} in front of the severe [part] of the fight, and retreat from behind him, so shall he be wounded and die.

 11:15 And he wroteºº in the letter,º saying,ºº Setºº yeº Uriahº inº the forefrontºº of the hottestº battle,º and retireºº ye fromºº him,º that he may be smitten,ºº and die.ºº

 11:16 And it came to pass while Joab was watching against the city, that he set Uriah{gr.Urias} in a place where he knew that valiant men were.

 11:16 And it came to pass,º when Joabº observedººº the city,º that he assignedººº Uriahº untoº a placeº whereºº he knewºº thatº valiantº menºº [were].

 11:17 And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and some of the people of the servants of David fell, and Uriah{gr.Urias} the Hittite{gr.Chettite} died also.

 11:17 And the menºº of the cityº went out,ºº and foughtºº withº Joab:º and there fellºº [some] ofº the peopleº of the servantsºº of David;º and Uriahº the Hittiteº diedºº also.º

 11:18 ¶ And Joab sent, and reported to David all the events of the war, so as to tell them to the king.

 11:18 ¶ Then Joabº sentºº and toldºº Davidºº allº the thingsº concerning the war;º

 11:19 And he charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast finished reporting all the events of the war to the king,

 11:19 And chargedººº the messenger,º saying,ºº When thou hast made an endºº of tellingºº the mattersº of the warº untoº the king,º

 11:20 then it shall come to pass if the anger of the king shall arise, and he shall say to thee, Why did ye draw nigh to the city to fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from off the wall?

 11:20 And ifº so beº that the king'sº wrathº arise,ºº and he sayºº unto thee, Whereforeº approachedº ye so nighºº untoº the cityº when ye did fight?ºº knewºº ye notº thatº they would shootºº fromºº the wall?º

 11:21 Who smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal{gr.Jerobaal} son of Ner? did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon him from above the wall, and he died in Thamasi? why did ye draw near to the wall? then thou shalt say, Thy servant Uriah{gr.Urias} the Hittite{gr.Chettite} is also dead.

 11:21 Whoº smoteººº Abimelechº the sonº of Jerubbesheth?º did notº a womanº castºº a pieceº of a millstoneº uponº him fromºº the wall,º that he diedºº in Thebez?º whyº went ye nighººº the wall?º then sayºº thou, Thy servantº Uriahº the Hittiteº is deadºº also.º

 11:22 ¶ And the messenger of Joab went to the king to Jerusalem, and he came and reported to David all that Joab told him, all the affairs of the war. And David was very angry with Joab, and said to the messenger, Why did ye draw nigh to the wall to fight? knew ye not that ye would be wounded from off the wall? Who smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal{gr.Jerobaal}? did not a woman cast upon him a piece of millstone from the wall, and he died in Thamasi? why did ye draw near to the wall?

 11:22 ¶ So the messengerº went,ººº and cameºº and shewedºº Davidºº allº thatº Joabº had sentºº him for.

 11:23 And the messenger said to David, The men prevailed against us, and they came out against us into the field, and we came upon them even to the door of the gate.

 11:23 And the messengerº saidºº untoº David,º Surelyº the menºº prevailedºº againstº us, and came outºº untoº us into the field,º and we wereº uponº them even untoº the enteringº of the gate.º

 11:24 And the archers shot at thy servants from off the wall, and some of the king's servants died, and thy servant Uriah{gr.Urias} the Hittite{gr.Chettite} is dead also.

 11:24 And the shootersºº shotºº from offºº the wallº uponº thy servants;º and [some] of the king'sº servantsººº be dead,ºº and thy servantº Uriahº the Hittiteº is deadºº also.º

 11:25 And David said to the messenger, Thus shalt thou say to Joab, Let not the matter be grievous in thine eyes, for the sword devours one way at one time and another way at another: strengthen thine array against the city, and destroy it, and strengthen him.

 11:25 Then Davidº saidºº untoº the messenger,º Thusº shalt thou sayºº untoº Joab,º Let notºº thisº thingº displeaseººº thee, forº the swordº devourethºº oneº as well as another:º make thy battleº more strongºº againstº the city,º and overthrowºº it: and encourageºº thou him.

 11:26 ¶ And the wife of Uriah{gr.Urias} heard that Uriah{gr.Urias} her husband was dead, and she mourned for her husband.

 11:26 ¶ And when the wifeº of Uriahº heardºº thatº Uriahº her husbandº was dead,ºº she mournedºº forº her husband.º

 11:27 And the time of mourning expired, and David sent and took her into his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son: but the thing which David did was evil in the eyes of the Lord.

 11:27 And when the mourningº was past,ºº Davidº sentºº and fetchedºº her toº his house,º and she becameº his wife,º and bareºº him a son.º But the thingº thatº Davidº had doneºº displeasedººº Yahweh.º
