 3:1 ¶ And there was war for a long time between the house of Saul and the house of David; and the house of David grew continually stronger; but the house of Saul grew continually weaker.

 3:1 ¶ Now there wasº longº warº betweenº the houseº of Saulº and the houseº of David:º but Davidº waxedºº strongerº and stronger,ºº and the houseº of Saulº waxedºº weakerº and weaker.º

 3:2 ¶ And sons were born to David in Hebron{gr.Chebron}: and his first-born was Ammon the son of Achinoom the Jezreelitess{gr.Jezraelitess}.

 3:2 ¶ And unto Davidº were sonsº bornºººº in Hebron:º and his firstbornº wasº Amnon,º of Ahinoamº the Jezreelitess;º

 3:3 And his second son [was] Daluia, the son of Abigail{gr.Abigaia} the Carmelitess; and the third, Absalom{gr.Abessalom} the son of Maachah{gr.Maacha} the daughter of Talmai{gr.Tholmi} the king of Gessir.

 3:3 And his second,º Chileab,º of Abigailº the wifeº of Nabalº the Carmelite;º and the third,º Absalomº the sonº of Maacahº the daughterº of Talmaiº kingº of Geshur;º

 3:4 And the fourth [was] Ornia, the son of Aggith, and the fifth [was] Shephatiah{gr.Saphatia}, the son of Abital.

 3:4 And the fourth,º Adonijahº the sonº of Haggith;º and the fifth,º Shephatiahº the sonº of Abital;º

 3:5 And the sixth [was] Jetheraam, the son of Aegal the wife of David. These were born to David in Hebron{gr.Chebron}.

 3:5 And the sixth,º Ithream,º by Eglahº David'sº wife.º Theseº were bornºº to Davidº in Hebron.º

 3:6 ¶ And it came to pass while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner{gr.Abenner} was governing the house of Saul.

 3:6 ¶ And it came to pass,º while there wasº warº betweenº the houseº of Saulº and the houseº of David,º that Abnerº made himself strongºº for the houseº of Saul.º

 3:7 And Saul had a concubine, Respha, the daughter of Jol; and Ishbosheth{gr.Jebosthe} the son of Saul said to Abner{gr.Abenner}, Why hast thou gone in to my father's concubine?

 3:7 And Saulº had a concubine,º whose nameº [was] Rizpah,º the daughterº of Aiah:º and [Ishbosheth] saidºº toº Abner,º Whereforeº hast thou goneº inºº untoº my father'sº concubine?º

 3:8 And Abner{gr.Abenner} was very angry with Ishbosheth{gr.Jebosthe} for this saying; and Abner{gr.Abenner} said to him, Am I a dog's head? I have this day wrought kindness with the house of Saul thy father, and with his brethren and friends, and have not gone over to the house of David, and dost thou this day seek a charge against me concerning injury to a woman?

 3:8 Then was Abnerº veryº wrothºº forº the wordsº of Ishbosheth,º and said,ºº [Am] Iº a dog'sº head,º whichº against Judahº do shewºº kindnessº this dayº untoº the houseº of Saulº thy father,º toº his brethren,º and toº his friends,º and have notº deliveredºº thee into the handº of David,º that thou chargestººº me to dayº with a faultº concerning this woman?º

 3:9 God do thus and more also to Abner{gr.Abenner}, if as the Lord swore to David, so do I not to him this day;

 3:9 Soº doºº Elohimº to Abner,º and moreº also,ººº except,º asº Yahwehº hath swornºº to David,º evenº soº I doºº to him;

 3:10 to take away the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to raise up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah{gr.Juda} from Dan to Beersheba{gr.Bersabee}.

 3:10 To translateºº the kingdomº from the houseºº of Saul,º and to set upºº theº throneº of Davidº overº Israelº and overº Judah,º from Danºº even toº Beersheba.º

 3:11 And Ishbosheth{gr.Jebosthe} could not any longer answer Abner{gr.Abenner} a word, because he feared him.

 3:11 And he couldºº notº answerººº Abnerº a wordº again,º because he fearedººº him.

 3:12 ¶ And Abner{gr.Abenner} sent messengers to David to Thaelam where he was, immediately, saying, Make thy covenant with me, and, behold, my hand [is] with thee to bring back to thee all the house of Israel.

 3:12 ¶ And Abnerº sentºº messengersº toº Davidº on his behalf,º saying,ºº Whoseº [is] the land?º sayingºº [also], Makeºº thy leagueº withº me, and, behold,º my handº [shall be] withº thee, to bring aboutººº allº Israelº untoº thee.

 3:13 ¶ And David said, With a good will I will make with thee a covenant: only I demand one condition of thee, saying, Thou shalt not see my face, unless thou bring Michal{gr.Melchol} the daughter of Saul, when thou comest to see my face.

 3:13 ¶ And he said,ºº Well;º Iº will makeºº a leagueº withº thee: butº oneº thingº Iº requireºº ofºº thee, that is,ºº Thou shalt notº seeººº my face,º exceptºº thou firstº bringººº Michalº Saul'sº daughter,º when thou comestºº to seeººº my face.º

 3:14 And David sent messengers to Ishbosheth{gr.Jebosthe} the son of Saul, saying, Restore me my wife Michal{gr.Melchol}, whom I took for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.

 3:14 And Davidº sentºº messengersº toº Ishboshethº Saul'sº son,º saying,ºº Deliverºº [me]º my wifeºº Michal,º whichº I espousedºº to me for an hundredº foreskinsº of the Philistines.º

 3:15 And Ishbosheth{gr.Jebosthe} sent, and took her from her husband, [even] from Phaltiel the son of Selle.

 3:15 And Ishboshethº sent,ºº and tookºº her fromºº [her] husband,º [even] fromºº Phaltielº the sonº of Laish.ººº

 3:16 And her husband went with her weeping behind her as far as Barakim. And Abner{gr.Abenner} said to him, Go, return; and he returned.

 3:16 And her husbandº wentººº withº her alongº weepingººº behindº her toº Bahurim.º Then saidºº Abnerº untoº him, Go,ººº return.ºº And he returned.ºº

 3:17 ¶ And Abner{gr.Abenner} spoke to the elders of Israel, saying, In former days ye sought David to reign over you;

 3:17 ¶ And Abnerº hadº communicationººº withº the eldersº of Israel,º saying,ºº Ye soughtººº forº Davidº in timesºº pastºº [to be] kingº overº you:

 3:18 and now perform [it]: for the Lord has spoken concerning David, saying, By the hand of my servant David I will save Israel out of the hand of all their enemies.

 3:18 Nowº then doºº [it]: forº Yahwehº hath spokenºº ofº David,º saying,ºº By the handº of my servantº Davidº I will saveººº my peopleº Israelº out of the handºº of the Philistines,º and out of the handºº of allº their enemies.ºº

 3:19 And Abner{gr.Abenner} spoke in the ears of Benjamin: and Abner{gr.Abenner} went to speak in the ears of David at Hebron{gr.Chebron}, all that seemed good in the eyes of Israel and in the eyes of the house of Benjamin.

 3:19 And Abnerº alsoº spakeºº in the earsº of Benjamin:º and Abnerº wentººº alsoº to speakºº in the earsº of Davidº in Hebronºº allº thatº seemedº goodºº to Israel,º and that seemed goodº to the wholeº houseº of Benjamin.º

 3:20 And Abner{gr.Abenner} came to David to Hebron{gr.Chebron}, and with him twenty men: and David made for Abner{gr.Abenner} and his men with him a banquet of wine.

 3:20 So Abnerº cameºº toº Davidº to Hebron,º and twentyº menºº withº him. And Davidº madeºº Abnerº and the menºº thatº [were] withº him a feast.º

 3:21 And Abner{gr.Abenner} said to David, I will arise now, and go, and gather to my lord the king all Israel; and I will make with him a covenant, and thou shalt reign over all whom thy soul desires. And David sent away Abner{gr.Abenner}, and he departed in peace.

 3:21 And Abnerº saidºº untoº David,º I will ariseºº and go,ººº and will gatherººº allº Israelº untoº my adonº the king,º that they may makeºº a leagueº withº thee, and that thou mayest reignºº over allº thatº thine heartº desireth.ºº And Davidº sentººº Abnerº away;ºº and he wentººº in peace.º

 3:22 ¶ And, behold, the servants of David and Joab arrived from their expedition, and they brought much spoil with them: and Abner{gr.Abenner} was not with David in Hebron{gr.Chebron}, because he had sent him away, and he had departed in peace.

 3:22 ¶ And, behold,º the servantsº of Davidº and Joabº cameºº from [pursuing] a troop,ºº and broughtº inºº a greatº spoilº withº them: but Abnerº [was] notº withº Davidº in Hebron;º forº he had sent him away,ºº and he was goneººº in peace.º

 3:23 And Joab and all his army came, and it was reported to Joab, saying, Abner{gr.Abenner} the son of Ner is come to David, and David has let him go, and he has departed in peace.

 3:23 When Joabº and allº the hostº thatº [was] withº him were come,ºº they toldºº Joab,º saying,ºº Abnerº the sonº of Nerº cameºº toº the king,º and he hath sent him away,ºº and he is goneººº in peace.º

 3:24 And Joab went in to the king, and said, What [is] this [that] thou hast done? behold, Abner{gr.Abenner} came to thee; and why hast thou let him go, and he has departed in peace?

 3:24 Then Joabº cameºº toº the king,º and said,ºº Whatº hast thou done?ºº behold,º Abnerº cameºº untoº thee; whyº [is] it [that] thou hast sent him away,ºº and he is quiteºº gone?ººº

 3:25 Knowest thou not the mischief of Abner{gr.Abenner} the son of Ner, that he came to deceive thee, and to know thy going out and thy coming in, and to know all things that thou doest?

 3:25 Thou knowestººº Abnerº the sonº of Ner,º thatº he cameºº to deceiveºº thee, and to knowººº thy going outº and thy coming in,ººº and to knowººº allº thatº thouº doest.ºº

 3:26 And Joab returned from David, and sent messengers to Abner{gr.Abenner} after [him]; and they bring him back from the well of Seiram: but David knew [it] not.

 3:26 And when Joabº was come outºº fromºº David,º he sentºº messengersº afterº Abner,º which brought him againººº from the wellºº of Sirah:º but Davidº knewºº [it] not.º

 3:27 And he brought back Abner{gr.Abenner} to Hebron{gr.Chebron}, and Joab caused him to turn aside from the gate to speak to him, laying wait for him: and he smote him there in the loins, and he died for the blood of Asahel{gr.Asael} the brother of Joab.

 3:27 And when Abnerº was returnedºº to Hebron,º Joabº took him asideºº inºº the gateº to speakºº withº him quietly,º and smoteºº him thereº under the fifthº [rib], that he died,ºº for the bloodº of Asahelº his brother.º

 3:28 ¶ And David heard [of it] afterwards, and said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the Lord even for ever of the blood of Abner{gr.Abenner} the son of Ner.

 3:28 ¶ And afterwardººº when Davidº heardºº [it], he said,ºº Iº and my kingdomº [are] guiltlessº beforeºº Yahwehº forº everºº from the bloodºº of Abnerº the sonº of Ner:º

 3:29 Let it fall upon the head of Joab, and upon all the house of his father; and let there not be wanting of the house of Joab one that has an issue, or a leper, or that leans on a staff, or that falls by the sword, or that wants bread.

 3:29 Let it restºº onº the headº of Joab,º and onº allº his father'sº house;º and let there notº failºº from the houseºº of Joabº one that hath an issue,ºº or that is a leper,ºº or that leanethºº on a staff,º or that fallethºº on the sword,º or that lackethº bread.º

 3:30 For Joab and Abishai{gr.Abessa} his brother laid wait continually for Abner{gr.Abenner}, because he slew Asahel{gr.Asael} their brother at Gibeon{gr.Gabaon} in the battle.

 3:30 So Joabº and Abishaiº his brotherº slewºº Abner,º becauseºº he had slainºº their brotherºº Asahelº at Gibeonº in the battle.º

 3:31 ¶ And David said to Joab and to all the people with him, Rend your garments, and gird yourselves with sackcloth, and lament before Abner{gr.Abenner}. And king David followed the bier.

 3:31 ¶ And Davidº saidºº toº Joab,º and toº allº the peopleº thatº [were] withº him, Rendºº your clothes,º and girdºº you with sackcloth,º and mournºº beforeº Abner.º And kingº Davidº [himself] followedººº the bier.º

 3:32 And they bury Abner{gr.Abenner} in Hebron{gr.Chebron}: and the king lifted up his voice, and wept at his tomb, and all the people wept for Abner{gr.Abenner}.

 3:32 And they buriedººº Abnerº in Hebron:º and the kingº lifted upººº his voice,º and weptºº atº the graveº of Abner;º and allº the peopleº wept.ºº

 3:33 And the king mourned over Abner{gr.Abenner}, and said, Shall Abner{gr.Abenner} die according to the death of Nabal?

 3:33 And the kingº lamentedºº overº Abner,º and said,ºº Diedºº Abnerº as a foolº dieth?º

 3:34 Thy hands were not bound, and thy feet [were] not [put] in fetters: [one] brought [thee] not near as Nabal; thou didst fall before children of iniquity.

 3:34 Thy handsº [were] notº bound,ºº norº thy feetº putºº into fetters:º as a manº fallethºº beforeº wickedº men,º [so] fellestºº thou. And allº the peopleº weptºº againºº overº him.

 3:35 And all the people assembled to weep for him. And all the people came to cause David to eat bread while it was yet day: and David swore, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if I eat bread or any thing else before the sun goes down.

 3:35 And when allº the peopleº cameºº to causeººº Davidº to eatºº meatº while it was yetº day,º Davidº sware,ºº saying,ºº Soº doºº Elohimº to me, and moreº also,ººº ifºº I tasteºº bread,º orº oughtº else,ºº tillº the sunº be down.ºº

 3:36 And all the people took notice, and all things that the king did before the people were pleasing in their sight.

 3:36 And allº the peopleº took noticeºº [of it], and it pleasedººº them:ºº as whatsoeverºº the kingº didºº pleasedººº allº the people.º

 3:37 So all the people and all Israel perceived in that day, that it was not of the king to slay Abner{gr.Abenner} the son of Ner.

 3:37 For allº the peopleº and allº Israelº understoodºº thatº dayº thatº it wasº notº of the kingºº to slayºº Abnerº the sonº of Ner.º

 3:38 And the king said to his servants, Know ye not that a great prince is this day fallen in Israel?

 3:38 And the kingº saidºº untoº his servants,º Knowºº ye notº thatº there is a princeº and a great manº fallenºº thisº dayº in Israel?º

 3:39 And that I am this day a [mere] kinsman [of his], and [as it were] a subject; but these men the sons of Zeruiah{gr.Saruia} are too hard for me: the Lord reward the evil-doer according to his wickedness.

 3:39 And Iº [am] this dayº weak,º though anointedºº king;º and theseº menºº the sonsº of Zeruiahº [be] too hardº forº me: Yahwehº shall rewardºº the doerº of evilººº according to his wickedness.º
