 18:1 ¶
And it came to pass in the third year of Hosea{gr.Osee} son of Elah{gr.Ela} king of Israel [that] Hezekiah{gr.Ezekias} son of Ahaz{gr.Achaz} king of Judah{gr.Juda} began to reign. |
|
 18:1 ¶
Now it came to passº
in the thirdº
yearº
of Hosheaº
sonº
of Elahº
kingº
of Israel,º
[that] Hezekiahº
the sonº
of Ahazº
kingº
of Judahº
began to reign.ºº |
 18:2
Five and twenty years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name [was] Abu, daughter of Zechariah{gr.Zacharias}. |
 18:2
Twentyº
and fiveº
yearsº
oldº
wasº
he when he began to reign;ºº
and he reignedºº
twentyº
and nineº
yearsº
in Jerusalem.º
His mother'sº
nameº
also [was] Abi,º
the daughterº
of Zachariah.º |
 18:3
And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father David did. |
 18:3
And he didºº
[that which was] rightº
in the sightº
of Yahweh,º
according to allº
thatº
Davidº
his fatherº
did.ºº |
 18:4 ¶
He removed the high places, and broke in pieces the pillars, and utterly destroyed the groves, and the brazen serpent which Mosheh{gr.Moses} made: because until those days the children of Israel burnt incense to it: and he called it Neesthan. |
 18:4 ¶
Heº
removedººº
the high places,º
and brakeººº
the images,º
and cut downººº
the groves,º
and brake in piecesºº
the brasenº
serpentº
thatº
Mosesº
had made:ºº
forº
untoº
thoseº
daysº
the childrenº
of Israelº
didº
burn incenseºº
to it: and he calledºº
it Nehushtan.º |
 18:5
He trusted in the Lord God of Israel; and after him there was not any like him among the kings of Judah{gr.Juda}, nor among those that were before him. |
 18:5
He trustedºº
in Yahwehº
Elohimº
of Israel;º
so that afterº
him wasº
noneº
like himº
among allº
the kingsº
of Judah,º
nor [any] thatº
wereº
beforeº
him. |
 18:6
And he clave to the Lord, he departed not from following him; and he kept his commandments, as many as he commanded Mosheh{gr.Moses}. |
 18:6
For he claveºº
to Yahweh,º
[and] departedºº
notº
from followingºº
him, but keptºº
his commandments,º
whichº
Yahwehº
commandedººº
Moses.º |
 18:7
And the Lord was with him; and he was wise in all that he undertook: and he revolted from the king of the Assyrians, and served him not. |
 18:7
And Yahwehº
wasº
withº
him; [and] he prosperedºº
whithersoeverºº
he went forth:ºº
and he rebelledºº
against the kingº
of Assyria,º
and servedºº
him not.º |
 18:8
He smote the Philistines [even] to Gaza, and to the border of it, from the tower of the watchmen even to the strong city. |
 18:8
Heº
smoteººº
the Philistines,º
[even] untoº
Gaza,º
and the bordersº
thereof, from the towerºº
of the watchmenºº
toº
the fencedº
city.º |
 18:9 ¶
And it came to pass in the fourth year of King Hezekiah{gr.Ezekias} (this is the seventh year of Hosea{gr.Osee} son of Elah{gr.Ela} king of Israel,) [that] Salamanassar king of the Assyrians came up against Samaria, and besieged it. |
 18:9 ¶
And it came to passº
in the fourthº
yearº
of kingº
Hezekiah,º
whichº
[was] the seventhº
yearº
of Hosheaº
sonº
of Elahº
kingº
of Israel,º
[that] Shalmaneserº
kingº
of Assyriaº
came upºº
againstº
Samaria,º
and besiegedººº
it. |
 18:10
And he took it at the end of three years, in the sixth year of Hezekiah{gr.Ezekias}, (this [is] the ninth year of Hosea{gr.Osee} king of Israel, when Samaria was taken.) |
 18:10
And at the endºº
of threeº
yearsº
they tookºº
it: [even] in the sixthº
yearº
of Hezekiah,º
thatº
[is] the ninthº
yearº
of Hosheaº
kingº
of Israel,º
Samariaº
was taken.ºº |
 18:11
And the king of the Assyrians carried away the Samaritans to Assyria, and put them in Alae and in Abor, [by] the river Gozan, and [in] the mountains of the Medes; |
 18:11
And the kingº
of Assyriaº
did carry awayººº
Israelº
unto Assyria,º
and putºº
them in Halahº
and in Haborº
[by] the riverº
of Gozan,º
and in the citiesº
of the Medes:º |
 18:12
because they hearkened not to the voice of the Lord their God, and transgressed his covenant, [even] in all things that Mosheh{gr.Moses} the servant of the Lord commanded, and hearkened not [to them], nor did [them]. |
 18:12
Becauseºº
they obeyedºº
notº
the voiceº
of Yahwehº
their Elohim,º
but transgressedººº
his covenant,º
[and]º
allº
thatº
Mosesº
the servantº
of Yahwehº
commanded,ºº
and would notº
hearºº
[them], norº
doºº
[them]. |
 18:13 ¶
And in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah{gr.Ezekias} came up Sennacherib{gr.Sennacherim} king of the Assyrians against the strong cities of Judah{gr.Juda}, and took them. |
 18:13 ¶
Now in the fourteenthºº
yearº
of kingº
Hezekiahº
did Sennacheribº
kingº
of Assyriaº
come upºº
againstº
allº
the fencedºº
citiesº
of Judah,º
and tookºº
them. |
 18:14
And Hezekiah{gr.Ezekias} king of Judah{gr.Juda} sent messengers to the king of the Assyrians to Lachish{gr.Lachis}, saying, I have offended; depart from me: whatsoever thou shalt lay upon me, I will bear. And the king of Assyria laid upon Hezekiah{gr.Ezekias} king of Judah{gr.Juda} [a tribute of] three hundred talents of silver, and thirty talents of gold. |
 18:14
And Hezekiahº
kingº
of Judahº
sentºº
toº
the kingº
of Assyriaº
to Lachish,º
saying,ºº
I have offended;ºº
returnºº
fromºº
me:º
that whichº
thou puttestºº
onº
me will I bear.ºº
And the kingº
of Assyriaº
appointedºº
untoº
Hezekiahº
kingº
of Judahº
threeº
hundredº
talentsº
of silverº
and thirtyº
talentsº
of gold.º |
 18:15
And Hezekiah{gr.Ezekias} gave all the silver that was found in the house of the Lord, and in the treasures of the king's house. |
 18:15
And Hezekiahº
gaveºº
[him]º
allº
the silverº
that was foundºº
in the houseº
of Yahweh,º
and in the treasuresº
of the king'sº
house.º |
 18:16
At that time Hezekiah{gr.Ezekias} cut off [the gold from] the doors of the temple, and [from] the pillars which Hezekiah{gr.Ezekias} king of Judah{gr.Juda} [had] overlaid with gold, and gave it to the king of the Assyrians. |
 18:16
At thatº
timeº
did Hezekiahº
cut offºº
[the gold from]º
the doorsº
of the templeº
of Yahweh,º
and [from] the pillarsº
whichº
Hezekiahº
kingº
of Judahº
had overlaid,ºº
and gaveºº
it to the kingº
of Assyria.º |
 18:17 ¶
And the king of the Assyrians sent Tharthan and Raphis and Rabshakeh{gr.Rapsakes} from Lachish{gr.Lachis} to king Hezekiah{gr.Ezekias} with a strong force against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem, and stood by the aqueduct of the upper pool, which is by the way of the fuller's field. |
 18:17 ¶
And the kingº
of Assyriaº
sentººº
Tartanº
and Rabsarisº
and Rabshakehº
fromº
Lachishº
toº
kingº
Hezekiahº
with a greatº
hostº
against Jerusalem.º
And they went upºº
and cameºº
to Jerusalem.º
And when they were come up,ºº
they cameºº
and stoodºº
by the conduitº
of the upperº
pool,º
whichº
[is] in the highwayº
of the fuller'sºº
field.º |
 18:18
And they cried to Hezekiah{gr.Ezekias}: and there came to him Eliakim{gr.Heliakim} the son of Hilkiah{gr.Chelcias} the steward, and Shebna{gr.Somnas} the scribe, and Joash{gr.Joas} the son of Shaphat{gr.Saphat} the recorder. |
 18:18
And when they had calledºº
toº
the king,º
there came outºº
toº
them Eliakimº
the sonº
of Hilkiah,º
whichº
[was] overº
the household,º
and Shebnaº
the scribe,ºº
and Joahº
the sonº
of Asaphº
the recorder.ºº |
 18:19
And Rabshakeh{gr.Rapsakes} said to them, Say now to Hezekiah{gr.Ezekias}, Thus says the king, the great king of the Assyrians, What [is] this confidence wherein thou trustest? |
 18:19
And Rabshakehº
saidºº
untoº
them, Speakºº
ye nowº
toº
Hezekiah,º
Thusº
saithºº
the greatº
king,º
the kingº
of Assyria,º
Whatº
confidenceº
[is] thisº
whereinº
thou trustest?ºº |
 18:20
Thou hast said, (but [they are] mere words,) [I have] counsel and strength for war. Now then in whom dost thou trust, that thou hast revolted from me? |
 18:20
Thou sayest,ºº
(butº
[they are but] vainº
words,)º
[I have] counselº
and strengthº
for the war.º
Nowº
onº
whomº
dost thou trust,ºº
thatº
thou rebellestºº
against me? |
 18:21
See now, art thou trusting for thyself on this broken staff of reed, [even] upon Mizraim{gr.Egypt}? whosoever shall stay himself upon it, it shall even go into his hand, and pierce it: so [is] Pharaoh{gr.Pharao} king of Mizraim{gr.Egypt} to all that trust on him. |
 18:21
Now,º
behold,º
thou trustestºº
uponº
the staffº
of thisº
bruisedºº
reed,º
[even] uponº
Egypt,º
onº
whichº
if a manº
lean,ºº
it will goºº
into his hand,º
and pierceºº
it: soº
[is] Pharaohº
kingº
of Egyptº
unto allº
that trustºº
onº
him. |
 18:22
And whereas thou hast said to me, We trust on the Lord God: [is] not this he, whose high places and altars Hezekiah{gr.Ezekias} has removed, and has said to Judah{gr.Juda} and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem? |
 18:22
But ifº
ye sayºº
untoº
me, We trustºº
inº
Yahwehº
our Elohim:º
[is] notº
that he,º
whoseºº
high placesº
and whose altarsº
Hezekiahº
hath taken away,ºº
and hath saidºº
to Judahº
and Jerusalem,º
Ye shall worshipºº
beforeº
thisº
altarº
in Jerusalem?º |
 18:23
And now, I pray you, make and agreement with my lord the king of the Assyrians, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou shalt be able on thy part to set riders upon them. |
 18:23
Nowº
therefore, I pray thee,º
give pledgesººº
toº
my adonº
the kingº
of Assyria,º
and I will deliverºº
thee two thousandº
horses,º
ifº
thou be ableºº
on thy part to setºº
ridersºº
uponº
them. |
 18:24
How then wilt thou turn away the face of one petty governor, from among the least of my lord's servants? whereas thou trustest for thyself on Mizraim{gr.Egypt} for chariots and horsemen. |
 18:24
Howº
then wilt thou turn awayººº
the faceº
of oneº
captainº
of the leastº
of my adon'sº
servants,º
and put thy trustºº
onº
Egyptº
for chariotsº
and for horsemen?º |
 18:25
And now have we come up without the Lord against this place to destroy it? The Lord said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it. |
 18:25
Am I nowº
come upºº
withoutºº
Yahwehº
againstº
thisº
placeº
to destroyºº
it? Yahwehº
saidºº
toº
me, Go upºº
againstº
thisº
land,º
and destroyºº
it. |
 18:26
And Eliakim{gr.Heliakim} the son of Chelkias, and Shebna{gr.Somnas}, and Joash{gr.Joas}, said to Rabshakeh{gr.Rapsakes}, Speak now to thy servants in the Syrian language, for we understand it; and speak not with us in the Jewish language: and why dost thou speak in the ears of the people that are on the wall? |
 18:26
Then saidºº
Eliakimº
the sonº
of Hilkiah,º
and Shebna,º
and Joah,º
untoº
Rabshakeh,º
Speak,ºº
I pray thee,º
toº
thy servantsº
in the Syrian language;º
forº
weº
understandºº
[it]: and talkºº
notº
withº
us in the Jews' languageº
in the earsº
of the peopleº
thatº
[are] onº
the wall.º |
 18:27
And Rabshakeh{gr.Rapsakes} said to them, Has my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? [has he] not [sent me] to the men who sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own water together with you. |
 18:27
But Rabshakehº
saidºº
untoº
them, Hath my adonº
sentºº
me toº
thy adon,º
and toº
thee, to speakººº
theseº
words?º
[hath he] notº
[sent me] toº
the menºº
which sitºº
onº
the wall,º
that they may eatººº
their own dung,ººº
and drinkººº
their own pissºººº
withº
you? |
 18:28
And Rabshakeh{gr.Rapsakes} stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jewish language, and spoke, and said, Hear the words of the great king of the Assyrians: |
 18:28
Then Rabshakehº
stoodºº
and criedºº
with a loudº
voiceº
in the Jews' language,º
and spake,ºº
saying,ºº
Hearºº
the wordº
of the greatº
king,º
the kingº
of Assyria:º |
 18:29
thus says the king, Let not Hezekiah{gr.Ezekias} encourage you with words: for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand. |
 18:29
Thusº
saithºº
the king,º
Let notº
Hezekiahº
deceiveºº
you: forº
he shall notº
be ableºº
to deliverºº
you out of his hand:ºº |
 18:30
And let not Hezekiah{gr.Ezekias} cause you to trust on the Lord, saying, The Lord will certainly deliver us; this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of the Assyrians: hearken not to Hezekiah{gr.Ezekias}: |
 18:30
Neitherº
let Hezekiahº
make you trustººº
inº
Yahweh,º
saying,ºº
Yahwehº
will surelyºº
deliverºº
us, andº
thisº
cityº
shall notº
be deliveredºº
into the handº
of the kingº
of Assyria.º |
 18:31
for thus says the king of the Assyrians, Gain my favour, and come forth to me, and every man shall drink [of the wine] of his own vine, and every man shall eat of his own fig-tree, and shall drink water out of his own cistern; |
 18:31
Hearkenºº
notº
toº
Hezekiah:º
forº
thusº
saithºº
the kingº
of Assyria,º
Makeºº
[an agreement] withº
me by a present,º
and come outºº
toº
me, and [then] eatºº
ye every manº
of his own vine,º
and every oneº
of his fig tree,º
and drinkºº
ye every oneº
the watersº
of his cistern:º |
 18:32
until I come and remove you to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, and bread and vineyards, a land of olive oil, and honey, and ye shall live and not die: and do not ye hearken to Hezekiah{gr.Ezekias}, for he deceives you, saying, The Lord shall deliver you. |
 18:32
Untilº
I comeºº
and take you awayººº
toº
a landº
like your own land,º
a landº
of cornº
and wine,º
a landº
of breadº
and vineyards,º
a landº
of oilº
oliveº
and of honey,º
that ye may live,ºº
and notº
die:ºº
and hearkenºº
notº
untoº
Hezekiah,º
whenº
he persuadethºº
you, saying,ºº
Yahwehº
will deliverºº
us. |
 18:33
Have the Gods of the nations at all delivered each their own land out of the hand of the king of the Assyrians? |
 18:33
Hath anyº
of the elohimº
of the nationsº
deliveredºº
at allººº
his landº
out of the handºº
of the kingº
of Assyria?º |
 18:34
Where is the god of Haemath, and of Arphad? where is the god of Seppharvaim, Anah{gr.Ana}, and Aba? for have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? |
 18:34
Whereº
[are] the elohimº
of Hamath,º
and of Arpad?º
whereº
[are] the elohimº
of Sepharvaim,º
Hena,º
and Ivah?º
have they deliveredººº
Samariaº
out of mine hand?ºº |
 18:35
Who [is there] among all the gods of the countries, who have delivered their countries out of my hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand? |
 18:35
Whoº
[are] they among allº
the elohimº
of the countries,º
thatº
have deliveredººº
their countryº
out of mine hand,ºº
thatº
Yahwehº
should deliverººº
Jerusalemº
out of mine hand?ºº |
 18:36
But [the men] were silent, and answered him not a word: for [there was] a commandment of the king, saying, Ye shall not answer him. |
 18:36
But the peopleº
held their peace,ºº
and answeredºº
him notº
a word:º
forº
the king'sº
commandmentº
was, saying,ºº
Answerºº
him not.º |
 18:37
And Eliakim{gr.Heliakim} the son of Hilkiah{gr.Chelcias}, the steward, and Shebna{gr.Somnas} the scribe, and Joash{gr.Joas} the son of Shaphat{gr.Saphat} the recorder came in to Hezekiah{gr.Ezekias}, having rent their garments; and they reported to him the words of Rabshakeh{gr.Rapsakes}. |
 18:37
Then cameºº
Eliakimº
the sonº
of Hilkiah,º
whichº
[was] overº
the household,º
and Shebnaº
the scribe,ºº
and Joahº
the sonº
of Asaphº
the recorder,ºº
toº
Hezekiahº
with [their] clothesº
rent,ºº
and toldºº
him the wordsº
of Rabshakeh.º |
