 40:1 ¶ The word° that° came° to° Yirmæyà יִרמְיָה° from°° Yähwè יָהוֶה,° after° that° Nævûzar´áđän נְבוּזַראֲדָן° the captain° of the guard° had let him go°° from° Rämà רָמָה,° when he had taken°° him being bound°° in chains° among° all° that were carried away captive° of Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַם° and Yæhûđà יְהוּדָה,° which were carried away captive°° unto Bävel בָּבֶל.°

 40:1 ¶ The word that came to Yirmeyah from Yahweh, after that Nevuzaradan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him being bound in chains among all that were carried away captive of Yerushalaim and Yehudah, which were carried away captive unto Bavel.

 40:2 And the captain° of the guard° took°° Yirmæyà יִרמְיָה,° and said°° unto° him, Yähwè יָהוֶה° thy ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים° hath pronounced°°° this° evil° upon° this° place.°

 40:2 And the captain of the guard took Yirmeyah, and said unto him, Yahweh thy Elohim hath pronounced this evil upon this place.

 40:3 Now Yähwè יָהוֶה° hath brought°° [it], and done°° according as° he hath said:°° because° ye have sinned°° against Yähwè יָהוֶה,° and have not° obeyed°° his voice,° therefore this° thing° is come° upon you.

 40:3 Now Yahweh hath brought [it], and done according as he hath said: because ye have sinned against Yahweh, and have not obeyed his voice, therefore this thing is come upon you.

 40:4 And now,° behold,° I loose°° thee this day° from° the chains° which° [were] upon° thine hand.° If° it seem good°° unto thee°° to come°° with° me into Bävel בָּבֶל,° come;°° and I will look well°°°° unto° thee: but if° it seem ill°°° unto thee°° to come°° with° me into Bävel בָּבֶל,° forbear:°° behold,°° all° the land° [is] before° thee: whither° it seemeth°° good° and convenient°° for thee to go,°°° thither° go.°°°

 40:4 And now, behold, I loose thee this day from the chains which [were] upon thine hand. If it seem good unto thee to come with me into Bavel, come; and I will look well unto thee: but if it seem ill unto thee to come with me into Bavel, forbear: behold, all the land [is] before thee: whither it seemeth good and convenient for thee to go, thither go.

 40:5 Now while he was not° yet° gone back,°° [he said], Go back°° also to° Gæđalyà גְּדַליָה° the son° of ´Áçîkäm אֲחִיקָם° the son° of Šäfän שָׁפָן,° whom° the king° of Bävel בָּבֶל° hath made governor°° over the cities° of Yæhûđà יְהוּדָה,° and dwell°° with° him among° the people:° or° go°°° wheresoever°° it seemeth° convenient°° unto thee to go.°°° So the captain° of the guard° gave°° him victuals° and a reward,° and let him go.°°

 40:5 Now while he was not yet gone back, [he said], Go back also to Gedalyah the son of Achiqam the son of Shafan, whom the king of Bavel hath made governor over the cities of Yehudah, and dwell with him among the people: or go wheresoever it seemeth convenient unto thee to go. So the captain of the guard gave him victuals and a reward, and let him go.

 40:6 Then went°° Yirmæyà יִרמְיָה° unto° Gæđalyà גְּדַליָה° the son° of ´Áçîkäm אֲחִיקָם° to Mixpà מִצפָּה;° and dwelt°° with° him among° the people° that were left°° in the land.°

 40:6 Then went Yirmeyah unto Gedalyah the son of Achiqam to Mitzpah; and dwelt with him among the people that were left in the land.

 40:7 ¶ Now when all° the captains° of the forces° which° [were] in the fields,° [even] they° and their men,°° heard°° that° the king° of Bävel בָּבֶל° had made° Gæđalyà גְּדַליָה° the son° of ´Áçîkäm אֲחִיקָם° governor°° in the land,° and° had committed°° unto° him men,°° and women,° and children,° and of the poor°° of the land,° of them that°° were not° carried away captive°° to Bävel בָּבֶל;°

 40:7 ¶ Now when all the captains of the forces which [were] in the fields, [even] they and their men, heard that the king of Bavel had made Gedalyah the son of Achiqam governor in the land, and had committed unto him men, and women, and children, and of the poor of the land, of them that were not carried away captive to Bavel;

 40:8 Then they came°° to° Gæđalyà גְּדַליָה° to Mixpà מִצפָּה,° even Yišmä`ë´l יִשׁמָעֵאל° the son° of Næŧanyà נְתַניָה,° and Yôçänän יוֹחָנָן° and Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן° the sons° of Kärëåç קָרֵחַ,° and Ŝæräyà שְׂרָיָה° the son° of Tançumeŧ תַּנחֻמֶת,° and the sons° of `Êfay עֵיפַי° the Næţôfäŧî נְטוֹפָתִי,° and Yæzanyà יְזַניָה° the son° of a Ma`áȼäŧî מַעֲכָתִי,° they° and their men.°°

 40:8 Then they came to Gedalyah to Mitzpah, even Yishmael the son of Nethanyah, and Yochanan and Yehonathan the sons of Qareach, and Serayah the son of Tanchumeth, and the sons of Efay the Netofathi, and Yezanyah the son of a Maakhathi, they and their men.

 40:9 And Gæđalyà גְּדַליָה° the son° of ´Áçîkäm אֲחִיקָם° the son° of Šäfän שָׁפָן° sware°° unto them and to their men,°° saying,°° Fear°° not° to serve°°° the Caŝdîm כַּשׂדִּים:° dwell° in°° the land,° and serve°°° the king° of Bävel בָּבֶל,° and it shall be well°° with you.

 40:9 And Gedalyah the son of Achiqam the son of Shafan sware unto them and to their men, saying, Fear not to serve the Kasdim: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Bavel, and it shall be well with you.

 40:10 As for me,° behold,° I will dwell°° at Mixpà מִצפָּה° to serve°°° the Caŝdîm כַּשׂדִּים,° which° will come°° unto° us: but ye,° gather°° ye wine,° and summer fruits,° and oil,° and put°° [them] in your vessels,° and dwell°° in your cities° that° ye have taken.°°

 40:10 As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mitzpah to serve the Kasdim, which will come unto us: but ye, gather ye wine, and summer fruits, and oil, and put [them] in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that ye have taken.

 40:11 Likewise° when all° the Yæhûđîm יְהוּדִים° that° [were] in Mô´äv מוֹאָב,° and among the `Ammönîm עַמֹּנִים,°° and in ´Éđôm אֱדוֹם,° and that° [were] in all° the countries,° heard°° that° the king° of Bävel בָּבֶל° had left°° a remnant° of Yæhûđà יְהוּדָה,° and that° he had set°° over° them° Gæđalyà גְּדַליָה° the son° of ´Áçîkäm אֲחִיקָם° the son° of Šäfän שָׁפָן;°

 40:11 Likewise when all the Yehudim that [were] in Moav, and among the Ammonim, and in Edom, and that [were] in all the countries, heard that the king of Bavel had left a remnant of Yehudah, and that he had set over them Gedalyah the son of Achiqam the son of Shafan;

 40:12 Even all° the Yæhûđîm יְהוּדִים° returned° out°° of all°° places° whither°° they were driven,°° and came°° to the land° of Yæhûđà יְהוּדָה,° to° Gæđalyà גְּדַליָה,° unto Mixpà מִצפָּה,° and gathered°° wine° and summer fruits° very° much.°°°

 40:12 Even all the Yehudim returned out of all places whither they were driven, and came to the land of Yehudah, to Gedalyah, unto Mitzpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits very much.

 40:13 ¶ Moreover Yôçänän יוֹחָנָן° the son° of Kärëåç קָרֵחַ,° and all° the captains° of the forces° that° [were] in the fields,° came°° to° Gæđalyà גְּדַליָה° to Mixpà מִצפָּה,°

 40:13 ¶ Moreover Yochanan the son of Qareach, and all the captains of the forces that [were] in the fields, came to Gedalyah to Mitzpah,

 40:14 And said°° unto° him, Dost thou certainly°° know°° that° Ba`álîs בַּעֲלִיס° the king° of the `Ammönîm עַמֹּנִים°° hath sent°°° Yišmä`ë´l יִשׁמָעֵאל° the son° of Næŧanyà נְתַניָה° to slay°°° thee? But Gæđalyà גְּדַליָה° the son° of ´Áçîkäm אֲחִיקָם° believed°° them not.°

 40:14 And said unto him, Dost thou certainly know that Baalis the king of the Ammonim hath sent Yishmael the son of Nethanyah to slay thee? But Gedalyah the son of Achiqam believed them not.

 40:15 Then Yôçänän יוֹחָנָן° the son° of Kärëåç קָרֵחַ° spake°° to° Gæđalyà גְּדַליָה° in Mixpà מִצפָּה° secretly,° saying,°° Let me go,°°° I pray thee,° and I will slay°°° Yišmä`ë´l יִשׁמָעֵאל° the son° of Næŧanyà נְתַניָה,° and no° man° shall know°° [it]: wherefore° should he slay°°° thee, that all° the Yæhûđîm יְהוּדִים°° which are gathered°° unto° thee should be scattered,°° and the remnant° in Yæhûđà יְהוּדָה° perish?°°

 40:15 Then Yochanan the son of Qareach spake to Gedalyah in Mitzpah secretly, saying, Let me go, I pray thee, and I will slay Yishmael the son of Nethanyah, and no man shall know [it]: wherefore should he slay thee, that all the Yehudim which are gathered unto thee should be scattered, and the remnant in Yehudah perish?

 40:16 But Gæđalyà גְּדַליָה° the son° of ´Áçîkäm אֲחִיקָם° said°° unto° Yôçänän יוֹחָנָן° the son° of Kärëåç קָרֵחַ,° Thou shalt not° do°°° this° thing:° for° thou° speakest°° falsely° of° Yišmä`ë´l יִשׁמָעֵאל.°

 40:16 But Gedalyah the son of Achiqam said unto Yochanan the son of Qareach, Thou shalt not do this thing: for thou speakest falsely of Yishmael.
