 9:1 ¶
And when the kings of the Amorites on the other side of Jordan, who were in the mountain country, and in the plain, and in all the coast of the great sea, and those who were near Antilibanus, and the Hittites{gr.Chettites}, and the Canaanites{gr.Chananites}, and the Perizzites{gr.Pherezites}, and the Hivites{gr.Evites}, and the Amorites, and the Girgashites{gr.Gergesites}, and the Jebusites, heard [of it], |
|
 9:1 ¶
And it came to pass,º
when allº
the kingsº
whichº
[were] on this sideº
Jordan,º
in the hills,º
and in the valleys,º
and in allº
the coastsº
of the greatº
seaº
overº
againstº
Lebanon,º
the Hittite,º
and the Amorite,º
the Canaanite,º
the Perizzite,º
the Hivite,º
and the Jebusite,º
heardºº
[thereof]; |
 9:2
they came all together at the same time to make war against Joshua{gr.Jesus} and Israel. |
|
 9:2
That they gatheredºº
themselvesº
together,º
to fightºº
withº
Joshuaº
and withº
Israel,º
with oneº
accord.º |
 9:3 ¶
And the inhabitants of Gibeon{gr.Gabaon} heard of all that the Lord did to Jericho and Ai{gr.Gai}. |
|
 9:3 ¶
And when the inhabitantsºº
of Gibeonº
heardººº
whatº
Joshuaº
had doneºº
unto Jerichoº
and to Ai,º |
 9:4
And they also wrought craftily, and they went and made provision and prepared themselves; and having taken old sacks on their shoulders, and old and rent and patched bottles of wine, |
|
 9:4
Theyº
did workºº
wilily,º
and wentººº
and made as if they had been ambassadors,ºº
and tookºº
oldº
sacksº
upon their asses,º
and wineº
bottles,º
old,º
and rent,ºº
and bound up;ºº |
 9:5
and the upper part of their shoes and their sandals old and clouted on their feet, and their garments old upon them-- and the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy and corrupt. |
|
 9:5
And oldº
shoesº
and cloutedºº
upon their feet,º
and oldº
garmentsº
uponº
them; and allº
the breadº
of their provisionº
was dryºº
[and] mouldy.º |
 9:6
And they came to Joshua{gr.Jesus} into the camp of Israel to Gilgal{gr.Galgala}, and said to Joshua{gr.Jesus} and Israel, We are come from a far land: now then make a covenant with us. |
|
 9:6
And they wentººº
toº
Joshuaº
untoº
the campº
at Gilgal,º
and saidºº
untoº
him, and toº
the menº
of Israel,º
We be comeºº
from a farº
country:ººº
nowº
therefore makeºº
ye a leagueº
with us. |
 9:7
And the children of Israel said to the Horite{gr.Chorrhaean}, Peradventure thou dwellest amongst us; and how should I make a covenant with thee? |
|
 9:7
And the menº
of Israelº
saidºº
untoº
the Hivites,º
Peradventureº
yeº
dwellºº
amongº
us; and howº
shall we makeºº
a leagueº
with you? |
 9:8
And they said to Joshua{gr.Jesus}, We are thy servants: and Joshua{gr.Jesus} said to them, Whence are ye, and whence have ye come? |
|
 9:8
And they saidºº
untoº
Joshua,º
Weº
[are] thy servants.º
And Joshuaº
saidºº
untoº
them, Whoº
[are] ye?º
and from whenceºº
comeºº
ye? |
 9:9
And they said, Thy servants are come from a very far country in the name of the Lord thy God: for we have heard his name, and all that he did in Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, |
|
 9:9
And they saidºº
untoº
him, From a veryº
farº
countryºººº
thy servantsº
are comeºº
because of the nameº
of Yahwehº
thy Elohim:º
forº
we have heardºº
the fameº
of him, and allº
thatº
he didºº
in Egypt,º |
 9:10
and all that he did to the kings of the Amorites, who were beyond Jordan, to Sihon{gr.Seon} king of the Amorites, and Og king of Bashan{gr.Basan}, who dwelt in Ashtaroth{gr.Astaroth} and in Edrain. |
|
 9:10
And allº
thatº
he didºº
to the twoº
kingsº
of the Amorites,º
thatº
[were] beyondº
Jordan,º
to Sihonº
kingº
of Heshbon,º
and to Ogº
kingº
of Bashan,º
whichº
[was] at Ashtaroth.º |
 9:11
And our elders and all that inhabit our land when they heard spoke to us, saying, Take to yourselves provision for the way, and go to meet them; and ye shall say to them, We are thy servants, and now make a covenant with us. |
|
 9:11
Wherefore our eldersº
and allº
the inhabitantsºº
of our countryº
spakeºº
toº
us, saying,ºº
Takeºº
victualsº
with youº
for the journey,º
and goººº
to meetºº
them, and sayºº
untoº
them, Weº
[are] your servants:º
therefore nowº
makeºº
ye a leagueº
with us. |
 9:12
These [are] the loaves-- we took them hot for our journey on the day on which we came out to come to you; and now they are dried and become mouldy. |
|
 9:12
Thisº
our breadº
we took hotº
[for] our provisionºº
out of our housesºº
on the dayº
we came forthºº
to goººº
untoº
you; but now,º
behold,º
it is dry,ºº
and it isº
mouldy:º |
 9:13
And these [are] the skins of wine which we filled when new, and they are rent; and our garments and our shoes are worn out because of the very long journey. |
|
 9:13
And theseº
bottlesº
of wine,º
whichº
we filled,ºº
[were] new;º
and, behold,º
they be rent:ºº
and theseº
our garmentsº
and our shoesº
are become oldºº
by reason of the veryº
longºº
journey.º |
 9:14
And the chiefs took of their provision, and asked not [counsel of] the Lord. |
|
 9:14
And the menºº
tookºº
of their victuals,ºº
and askedºº
notº
[counsel] at the mouthº
of Yahweh.º |
 9:15
And Joshua{gr.Jesus} made peace with them, and they made a covenant with them to preserve them; and the princes of the congregation sware to them. |
|
 9:15
And Joshuaº
madeºº
peaceº
with them, and madeººº
a leagueº
with them, to let them live:ºº
and the princesº
of the congregationº
swareºº
unto them. |
 9:16 ¶
And it came to pass three days after they had made a covenant with them, they heard that they were near neighbours, and that they dwelt among them. |
|
 9:16 ¶
And it came to passº
at the endºº
of threeº
daysº
afterºº
they had madeºº
a leagueº
with them, that they heardºº
thatº
theyº
[were] theirº
neighbours,º
and [that] theyº
dweltºº
amongº
them. |
 9:17
And the children of Israel departed and came to their cities; and their cities [were] Gibeon{gr.Gabaon}, and Kephira, and Berot, and the cities of Jarin. |
|
 9:17
And the childrenº
of Israelº
journeyed,ºº
and cameºº
untoº
their citiesº
on the thirdº
day.º
Now their citiesº
[were] Gibeon,º
and Chephirah,º
and Beeroth,º
and Kirjathjearim.º |
 9:18
And the children of Israel fought not with them, because all the princes sware to them by the Lord God of Israel; and all the congregation murmured at the princes. |
|
 9:18
And the childrenº
of Israelº
smoteºº
them not,º
becauseº
the princesº
of the congregationº
had swornºº
unto them by Yahwehº
Elohimº
of Israel.º
And allº
the congregationº
murmuredºº
againstº
the princes.º |
 9:19
And the princes said to all the congregation: We have sworn to them by the Lord God of Israel, and now we shall not be able to touch them. |
|
 9:19
But allº
the princesº
saidºº
untoº
allº
the congregation,º
Weº
have swornºº
unto them by Yahwehº
Elohimº
of Israel:º
nowº
therefore we mayºº
notº
touchºº
them. |
 9:20
This we will do; take them alive, and we will preserve them: so there shall not be wrath against us by reason of the oath which we swore to them. |
|
 9:20
Thisº
we will doºº
to them; we will even let them live,ººº
lestº
wrathº
beº
uponº
us, because ofº
the oathº
whichº
we swareºº
unto them. |
 9:21
They shall live, and shall be hewers of wood and drawers of water to all the congregation, as the princes said to them. |
|
 9:21
And the princesº
saidºº
untoº
them, Let them live;ºº
but let them beº
hewersºº
of woodº
and drawersºº
of waterº
unto allº
the congregation;º
asº
the princesº
had promisedºº
them. |
 9:22 ¶
And Joshua{gr.Jesus} called them together and said to them, Why have ye deceived me, saying, We live very far from you; whereas ye are fellow-countrymen of those who dwell among us? |
|
 9:22 ¶
And Joshuaº
calledºº
for them, and he spakeºº
untoº
them, saying,ºº
Whereforeº
have ye beguiledºº
us, saying,ºº
Weº
[are] veryº
farº
fromº
you; when yeº
dwellºº
amongº
us? |
 9:23
And now ye are cursed: there shall not fail of you a slave, or a hewer of wood, or a drawer of water to me and my God. |
|
 9:23
Nowº
therefore yeº
[are] cursed,ºº
and there shall noneº
ofº
you be freedºº
from being bondmen,º
and hewersºº
of woodº
and drawersºº
of waterº
for the houseº
of my Elohim.º |
 9:24
And they answered Joshua{gr.Jesus}, saying, It was reported to us what the Lord thy God charged his servant Mosheh{gr.Moses}, to give you this land, and to destroy us and all that dwelt on it from before you; and we feared very much for our lives because of you, and [therefore] we did this thing. |
|
 9:24
And they answeredººº
Joshua,º
and said,ºº
Becauseº
it was certainlyºº
toldºº
thy servants,ºº
how thatº
Yahwehº
thy Elohimº
commandedºº
his servantºº
Mosesº
to giveºº
you allº
the land,º
and to destroyººº
allº
the inhabitantsºº
of the landº
from beforeºº
you, therefore we were soreº
afraidºº
of our livesº
becauseº
ofºº
you, and have doneººº
thisº
thing.º |
 9:25
And now, behold, we [are] in your power; do to us as it is pleasing to you, and as it seems [good] to you. |
|
 9:25
And now,º
behold,º
weº
[are] in thine hand:º
as it seemethº
goodº
and rightº
unto theeº
to doºº
unto us, do.ºº |
 9:26
Land they did so to them; and Joshua{gr.Jesus} rescued them in that day out of the hands of the children of Israel, and they did not slay them. |
|
 9:26
And soº
didºº
he unto them, and deliveredºº
them out of the handºº
of the childrenº
of Israel,º
that they slewºº
them not.º |
 9:27
And Joshua{gr.Jesus} made them in that day hewers of wood and drawers of water to the whole congregation, and for the altar of God: therefore the inhabitants of Gibeon{gr.Gabaon} became hewers of wood and drawers of water for the altar of God until this day, even for the place which the Lord should choose. |
|
 9:27
And Joshuaº
madeºº
them thatº
dayº
hewersºº
of woodº
and drawersºº
of waterº
for the congregation,º
and for the altarº
of Yahweh,º
even untoº
thisº
day,º
inº
the placeº
whichº
he should choose.ºº |
