Matthew 23

1 Christ admonisheth the people to follow the good doctrine, not the evil examples of the scribes and Pharisees. 5 His disciples must beware of their ambition. 13 He denounceth eight woes against their hypocrisy and blindness: 34 and prophesieth of the destruction of Jerusalem.

 23:1 Then 5119 Jesus 2424 spoke 2980 to the crowds 3793 and to His disciples 3101,

 23:2 saying 3004: “The scribes 1122 and the Pharisees 5330 have seated 2523 themselves 2523 in the chair 2515 of Moses 3475;

 23:3 therefore 3767 all 3956 that they tell 3004 you, do 4160 and observe 5083, but do not do 4160 according 2596 to their deeds 2041; for they say 3004 [things] and do not do 4160 [them].

 23:4 “They tie 1195 up heavy 926 burdens 5413 and lay 2007 them on men’s 444 shoulders 5606, but they themselves 846 are unwilling 3756 2309 to move 2795 them with [so much as] a finger 1147.

 23:5 “But they do 4160 all 3956 their deeds 2041 to be noticed 2300 by men 444; for they broaden 4115 their phylacteries 5440 and lengthen 3170 the tassels 2899 [of their garments].

 23:6 “They love 5368 the place 4411 of honor 4411 at banquets 1173 and the chief 4410 seats 4410 in the synagogues 4864,

 23:7 and respectful greetings 783 in the market 58 places 58, and being called 2564 Rabbi 4461 by men 444.

 23:8 “But do not be called 2564 Rabbi 4461; for One 1520 is your Teacher 1320, and you are all 3956 brothers 80.

 23:9 “Do not call 2564 [anyone] on earth 1093 your father 3962; for One 1520 is your Father 3962, He who is in heaven 3770.

 23:10 “Do not be called 2564 leaders 2519; for One 1520 is your Leader 2519, [that is], Christ 5547.

 23:11 “But the greatest 3173 among you shall be your servant 1249.

 23:12 “Whoever 3748 exalts 5312 himself 1438 shall be humbled 5013; and whoever 3748 humbles 5013 himself 1438 shall be exalted 5312.

 23:13 ¶ “But woe 3759 to you, scribes 1122 and Pharisees 5330, hypocrites 5273, because 3754 you shut 2808 off the kingdom 932 of heaven 3772 from people 444; for you do not enter 1525 in yourselves 4771, nor 3761 do you allow 863 those 3588 who are entering 1525 to go 1525 in.

 23:15 ¶ “Woe 3759 to you, scribes 1122 and Pharisees 5330, hypocrites 5273, because 3754 you travel 4013 around 4013 on sea 2281 and land 3584 to make 4160 one 1520 proselyte 4339; and when 3752 he becomes 1096 one, you make 4160 him twice 1362 as much 1362 a son 5207 of hell 1067 as yourselves 4771.

 23:16 ¶ “Woe 3759 to you, blind 5185 guides 3595, who say 3004, ‘Whoever 3739 302 swears 3660 by the temple 3485, [that] is nothing 3762; but whoever 3739 302 swears 3660 by the gold 5557 of the temple 3485 is obligated 3784.’

 23:17 “You fools 3474 and blind 5185 men 5185! Which 5101 is more 3173 important 3173, the gold 5557 or 2228 the temple 3485 that sanctified 37 the gold 5557?

 23:18 “And, ‘Whoever 3739 302 swears 3660 by the altar 2379, [that] is nothing 3762, but whoever 3739 302 swears 3660 by the offering 1435 on it, he is obligated 3784.’

 23:19 “You blind 5185 men 5185, which 5101 is more 3173 important 3173, the offering 1435, or 2228 the altar 2379 that sanctifies 37 the offering 1435?

 23:20 “Therefore 3767, whoever 3588 swears 3660 by the altar 2379, swears 3660 [both] by the altar 2379 and by everything 3956 on it.

 23:21 “And whoever 3588 swears 3660 by the temple 3485, swears 3660 [both] by the temple 846 and by Him who dwells 2730 within 2730 it.

 23:22 “And whoever 3588 swears 3660 by heaven 3772, swears 3660 [both] by the throne 2362 of God 2316 and by Him who sits 2521 upon it.

 23:23 ¶ “Woe 3759 to you, scribes 1122 and Pharisees 5330, hypocrites 5273! For you tithe 586b mint 2238 and dill 432 and cummin 2951, and have neglected 863 the weightier 926 provisions 926 of the law 3551: justice 2920 and mercy 1656 and faithfulness 4102; but these 3778 are the things you should 1163 have done 4160 without 3361 neglecting 863 the others 2548.

 23:24 “You blind 5185 guides 3595, who strain 1368 out a gnat 2971 and swallow 2666 a camel 2574!

 23:25 ¶ “Woe 3759 to you, scribes 1122 and Pharisees 5330, hypocrites 5273! For you clean 2511 the outside 1855 of the cup 4221 and of the dish 3953, but inside 2081 they are full 1073 of robbery 724 and self-indulgence 192.

 23:26 “You blind 5185 Pharisee 5330, first 4413 clean 2511 the inside 1787 of the cup 4221 and of the dish 3953, so 2443 that the outside 1622 of it may become 1096 clean 2513 also 2532.

 23:27 ¶ “Woe 3759 to you, scribes 1122 and Pharisees 5330, hypocrites 5273! For you are like 3945 whitewashed 2867 tombs 5028 which 3748 on the outside 1855 appear 5316 beautiful 5611, but inside 2081 they are full 1073 of dead 3498 men’s 3498 bones 3747 and all 3956 uncleanness 167.

 23:28 “So 3779 you, too 2532, outwardly 1855 appear 5316 righteous 1342 to men 444, but inwardly 2081 you are full 3324 of hypocrisy 5272 and lawlessness 458.

 23:29 ¶ “Woe 3759 to you, scribes 1122 and Pharisees 5330, hypocrites 5273! For you build 3618 the tombs 5028 of the prophets 4396 and adorn 2885 the monuments 3419 of the righteous 1342,

 23:30 and say 3004, ‘If 1487 we had been 1510 [living] in the days 2250 of our fathers 3962, we would not have been 1510 partners 2844 with them in [shedding] the blood 129 of the prophets 4396.’

 23:31 “So 5620 you testify 3140 against yourselves 1438, that you are sons 5207 of those 3588 who murdered 5407 the prophets 4396.

 23:32 “Fill 4137 up, then 2532, the measure 3358 [of the guilt] of your fathers 3962.

 23:33 “You serpents 3789, you brood 1081 of vipers 2191, how 4459 will you escape 5343 the sentence 2920 of hell 1067?

 23:34 ¶ “Therefore 1223 3778, behold 2400, I am sending 649 you prophets 4396 and wise 4680 men 4680 and scribes 1122; some 1537 of them you will kill 615 and crucify 4717, and some 1537 of them you will scourge 3146 in your synagogues 4864, and persecute 1377 from city 4172 to city 4172,

 23:35 so 3704 that upon you may fall 2064 [the guilt of] all 3956 the righteous 1342 blood 129 shed 1632b on earth 1093, from the blood 129 of righteous 1342 Abel 6 to the blood 129 of Zechariah 2197, the son 5207 of Berechiah 914, whom 3739 you murdered 5407 between 3342 the temple 3485 and the altar 2379.

 23:36 “Truly 281 I say 3004 to you, all 3956 these 3778 things 3778 will come 2240 upon this 3778 generation 1074.

 23:37 ¶ “Jerusalem 2419, Jerusalem 2419, who kills 615 the prophets 4396 and stones 3036 those 3588 who are sent 649 to her! How 4212 often 4212 I wanted 2309 to gather 1996 your children 5043 together 1996, the way 5158 a hen 3733 gathers 1996 her chicks 3556a under 5259 her wings 4420, and you were unwilling 3756 2309.

 23:38 “Behold 2400, your house 3624 is being left 863 to you desolate 2048!

 23:39 “For I say 3004 to you, from now 737 on you will not see 3708 Me until 2193 you say 3004, ‘BLESSED 2127 IS HE WHO COMES 2064 IN THE NAME 3686 OF THE LORD 2962!’”
