Matthew 14

1 Herod's opinion of Christ. 3 Wherefore John the Baptist was beheaded. 13 Jesus departeth into a desert place: 15 where he feedeth five thousand men with five loaves and two fishes. 22 He walketh on the sea to his disciples: 34 and landing at Gennesaret, healeth the sick by the touch of the hem of his garment.

 14:1 At that time 2540 Herod 2264 the tetrarch 5068a heard 191 the news 189 about Jesus 2424,

 14:2 and said 3004 to his servants 3816, “This 3778 is John 2491 the Baptist 910; he has risen 1453 from the dead 3498, and that is why 1223 miraculous 1411 powers 1411 are at work 1754 in him.”

 14:3 ¶ For when Herod 2264 had John 2491 arrested 2902, he bound 1210 him and put 659 him in prison 5438 because 1223 of Herodias 2266, the wife 1135 of his brother 80 Philip 5376.

 14:4 For John 2491 had been saying 3004 to him, “It is not lawful 1832 for you to have 2192 her.”

 14:5 Although Herod wanted 2309 to put 615 him to death 615, he feared 5399 the crowd 3793, because 3754 they regarded 2192 John 846 as a prophet 4396.

 14:6 ¶ But when Herod’s 2264 birthday 1077 came 1096, the daughter 2364 of Herodias 2266 danced 3738 before 1722 3319 [them] and pleased 700 Herod 2264,

 14:7 so 3606 [much] that he promised 3670 with an oath 3727 to give 1325 her whatever 3739 1437 she asked 154.

 14:8 Having been prompted 4264 by her mother 3384, she *said 5346, “Give 1325 me here 5602 on a platter 4094 the head 2776 of John 2491 the Baptist 910.”

 14:9 Although he was grieved 3076, the king 935 commanded 2753 [it] to be given 1325 because 1223 of his oaths 3727, and because of his dinner 4873 guests 4873.

 14:10 He sent 3992 and had John 2491 beheaded 607 in the prison 5438.

 14:11 And his head 2776 was brought 5342 on a platter 4094 and given 1325 to the girl 2877, and she brought 5342 it to her mother 3384.

 14:12 His disciples 3101 came 4334 and took 142 away 142 the body 4430 and buried 2290 it; and they went 2064 and reported 518 to Jesus 2424.

 14:13 ¶ Now 1161 when Jesus 2424 heard 191 [about John], He withdrew 402 from there 1564 in a boat 4143 to a secluded 2048 place 5117 by Himself 2398; and when the people 3793 heard 191 [of this], they followed 190 Him on foot 3979a from the cities 4172.

 14:14 When He went 1831 ashore 1831, He saw 3708 a large 4183 crowd 3793, and felt 4697 compassion 4697 for them and healed 2323 their sick 732.

 14:15 ¶ When it was evening 3798, the disciples 3101 came 4334 to Him and said 3004, “This 3588 place 5117 is desolate 2048 and the hour 5610 is already 2235 late 3928; so 3767 send 630 the crowds 3793 away 630, that they may go 565 into the villages 2968 and buy 59 food 1033 for themselves 1438.”

 14:16 But Jesus 2424 said 3004 to them, “They do not need 5532 to go 565 away 565; you give 1325 them [something] to eat 2068!”

 14:17 They *said 3004 to Him, “We have 2192 here 5602 only 3756 1487 3361 five 4002 loaves 740 and two 1417 fish 2486.”

 14:18 And He said 3004, “Bring 5342 them here 5602 to Me.”

 14:19 Ordering 2753 the people 3793 to sit 347 down 347 on the grass 5528, He took 2983 the five 4002 loaves 740 and the two 1417 fish 2486, and looking 308 up toward 1519 heaven 3772, He blessed 2127 [the food], and breaking 2806 the loaves 740 He gave 1325 them to the disciples 3101, and the disciples 3101 [gave them] to the crowds 3793,

 14:20 and they all 3956 ate 2068 and were satisfied 5526. They picked 142 up what 3588 was left 4052 over 4052 of the broken 2801 pieces 2801, twelve 1427 full 4134 baskets 2894.

 14:21 There were about 5616 five 4000 thousand 4000 men 435 who ate 2068, besides 5565 women 1135 and children 3813.

 14:22 ¶ Immediately 2112 He made 315 the disciples 3101 get 1684 into the boat 4143 and go 4254 ahead 4254 of Him to the other 4008 side 4008, while 2193 He sent 630 the crowds 3793 away 630.

 14:23 After He had sent 630 the crowds 3793 away 630, He went 305 up on the mountain 3735 by Himself 2398 to pray 4336; and when it was evening 3798, He was there 1563 alone 3441.

 14:24 But the boat 4143 was already 2235 a long 4183 distance 4712 from the land 1093, battered 928 by the waves 2949; for the wind 417 was contrary 1727.

 14:25 And in the fourth 5067a watch 5438 of the night 3571 He came 2064 to them, walking 4043 on the sea 2281.

 14:26 When the disciples 3101 saw 3708 Him walking 4043 on the sea 2281, they were terrified 5015, and said 3004, “It is a ghost 5326!” And they cried 2896 out in fear 5401.

 14:27 But immediately 2117 Jesus 2424 spoke 2980 to them, saying 3004, “Take 2293 courage 2293, it is I; do not be afraid 5399.”

 14:28 ¶ Peter 4074 said 3004 to Him, “Lord 2962, if 1487 it is You, command 2753 me to come 2064 to You on the water 5204.”

 14:29 And He said 3004, “Come 2064!” And Peter 4074 got 2597 out of the boat 4143, and walked 4043 on the water 5204 and came 2064 toward 4314 Jesus 2424.

 14:30 But seeing 991 the wind 417, he became frightened 5399, and beginning 757 to sink 2670, he cried 2896 out, “Lord 2962, save 4982 me!”

 14:31 Immediately 2112 Jesus 2424 stretched 1614 out His hand 5495 and took 1949 hold 1949 of him, and *said 3004 to him, “You of little 3640b faith 3640b, why 1519 5101 did you doubt 1365b?”

 14:32 When they got 305 into the boat 4143, the wind 417 stopped 2869.

 14:33 And those 3588 who were in the boat 4143 worshiped 4352 Him, saying 3004, “You are certainly 230 God’s 2316 Son 5207!”

 14:34 ¶ When they had crossed 1276 over 1276, they came 2064 to land 1093 at Gennesaret 1082.

 14:35 And when the men 435 of that place 5117 recognized 1921 Him, they sent 649 [word] into all 3650 that surrounding 4066 district 4066 and brought 4374 to Him all 3956 who were sick 2560;

 14:36 and they implored 3870 Him that they might just 3441 touch 681 the fringe 2899 of His cloak 2440; and as many 3745 as touched 681 [it] were cured 1295.
