 9:1 ¶ And ´Élîšä` אֱלִישָׁעº the prophetº calledºº oneº of the childrenºº of the prophets,º and saidºº unto him, Gird upºº thy loins,º and takeºº thisº boxº of oilº in thine hand,º and goººº to Rämô± Gil`äð רָמוֹת־גִּלעָד:ºº

 9:1 ¶ And Elisha the prophet called one of the children of the prophets, and said unto him, Gird up thy loins, and take this box of oil in thine hand, and go to Ramoth-Gilad:

 9:2 And when thou comestºº thither,º look outºº thereº Yëhû´ יֵהוּאº the sonº of Yæhôšäfä+ יְהוֹשָׁפָטº the sonº of Nimšî נִמשִׁי,º and go in,ºº and make him arise upºº from amongºº his brethren,º and carryºº him to an innerº chamber;º

 9:2 And when thou comest thither, look out there Yehu the son of Yehoshafat the son of Nimshi, and go in, and make him arise up from among his brethren, and carry him to an inner chamber;

 9:3 Then takeºº the boxº of oil,º and pourºº [it] onº his head,º and say,ºº Thusº saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶה,º I have anointedºº thee kingº overº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל.º Then openºº the door,º and flee,ºº and tarryºº not.º

 9:3 Then take the box of oil, and pour [it] on his head, and say, Thus saith Yahweh, I have anointed thee king over Yisrael. Then open the door, and flee, and tarry not.

 9:4 ¶ So the young man,º [even] the young manº the prophet,º wentººº to Rämô± Gil`äð רָמוֹת־גִּלעָד.ºº

 9:4 ¶ So the young man, [even] the young man the prophet, went to Ramoth-Gilad.

 9:5 And when he came,ºº behold,º the captainsº of the hostº [were] sitting;ºº and he said,ºº I have an errandº toº thee, O captain.º And Yëhû´ יֵהוּאº said,ºº Untoº whichº of allºº us? And he said,ºº Toº thee, O captain.º

 9:5 And when he came, behold, the captains of the host [were] sitting; and he said, I have an errand to thee, O captain. And Yehu said, Unto which of all us? And he said, To thee, O captain.

 9:6 And he arose,ºº and wentºº into the house;º and he pouredºº the oilº onº his head,º and saidºº unto him, Thusº saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶהº ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º I have anointedºº thee kingº overº the peopleº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º [even] overº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל.º

 9:6 And he arose, and went into the house; and he poured the oil on his head, and said unto him, Thus saith Yahweh Elohim of Yisrael, I have anointed thee king over the people of Yahweh, [even] over Yisrael.

 9:7 And thou shalt smiteººº the houseº of ´Aç´äv אַחאָבº thy ´áðôn אֲדוֹן,º that I may avengeºº the bloodº of my servantsº the prophets,º and the bloodº of allº the servantsº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º at the handºº of ´Îzevel אִיזֶבֶל.º

 9:7 And thou shalt smite the house of Achav thy adon, that I may avenge the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of Yahweh, at the hand of Izevel.

 9:8 For the wholeº houseº of ´Aç´äv אַחאָבº shall perish:ºº and I will cut offºº from ´Aç´äv אַחאָבº him that pissethºº against the wall,º and him that is shut upºº and leftºº in Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל:º

 9:8 For the whole house of Achav shall perish: and I will cut off from Achav him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Yisrael:

 9:9 And I will makeººº the houseº of ´Aç´äv אַחאָבº like the houseº of Yorov`äm יָרָבעָםº the sonº of Nævä+ נְבָט,º and like the houseº of Ba`šä´ בַּעשָׁאº the sonº of ´Áçiyyà אֲחִיָּה:º

 9:9 And I will make the house of Achav like the house of Yorovam the son of Nevat, and like the house of Basha the son of Achiyyah:

 9:10 And the dogsº shall eatºº ´Îzevel אִיזֶבֶלº in the portionº of Yizræ`e´l יִזרְעֶאל,º and [there shall be] noneº to buryºº [her]. And he openedºº the door,º and fled.ºº

 9:10 And the dogs shall eat Izevel in the portion of Yizreel, and [there shall be] none to bury [her]. And he opened the door, and fled.

 9:11 ¶ Then Yëhû´ יֵהוּאº came forthºº toº the servantsº of his ´áðôn אֲדוֹן:º and [one] saidºº unto him, [Is] all well?º whereforeº cameºº thisº madºº [fellow] toº thee? And he saidºº untoº them, Yeº knowºº the man,º andº his communication.º

 9:11 ¶ Then Yehu came forth to the servants of his adon: and [one] said unto him, [Is] all well? wherefore came this mad [fellow] to thee? And he said unto them, Ye know the man, and his communication.

 9:12 And they said,ºº [It is] false;º tellºº us now.º And he said,ºº Thusº and thusº spakeºº he toº me, saying,ºº Thusº saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶה,º I have anointedºº thee kingº overº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל.º

 9:12 And they said, [It is] false; tell us now. And he said, Thus and thus spake he to me, saying, Thus saith Yahweh, I have anointed thee king over Yisrael.

 9:13 Then they hasted,ºº and tookºº every manº his garment,º and putºº [it] underº him onº the topº of the stairs,º and blewºº with trumpets,º saying,ºº Yëhû´ יֵהוּאº is king.ºº

 9:13 Then they hasted, and took every man his garment, and put [it] under him on the top of the stairs, and blew with trumpets, saying, Yehu is king.

 9:14 So Yëhû´ יֵהוּאº the sonº of Yæhôšäfä+ יְהוֹשָׁפָטº the sonº of Nimšî נִמשִׁיº conspiredºº againstº Yôräm יוֹרָם.º (Now Yôräm יוֹרָםº hadº keptºº Rämô± Gil`äð רָמוֹת־גִּלעָד,ºº heº and allº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º becauseºº of Çázä´ël חֲזָאֵלº kingº of ´Áräm אֲרָם.º

 9:14 So Yehu the son of Yehoshafat the son of Nimshi conspired against Yoram. (Now Yoram had kept Ramoth-Gilad, he and all Yisrael, because of Chazael king of Aram.

 9:15 But kingº Yôräm יוֹרָםº was returnedºº to be healedºº in Yizræ`e´l יִזרְעֶאלº ofº the woundsº whichº the ´Árammîm אֲרַמִּיםº had givenºº him, when he foughtºº withº Çázä´ël חֲזָאֵלº kingº of ´Áräm אֲרָם.)º And Yëhû´ יֵהוּאº said,ºº Ifº it beº your minds,º [then] let noneº go forthºº [nor] escapeº out ofº the cityº to goººº to tellºº [it] in Yizræ`e´l יִזרְעֶאל.º

 9:15 But king Yoram was returned to be healed in Yizreel of the wounds which the Arammim had given him, when he fought with Chazael king of Aram.) And Yehu said, If it be your minds, [then] let none go forth [nor] escape out of the city to go to tell [it] in Yizreel.

 9:16 So Yëhû´ יֵהוּאº rode in a chariot,ºº and wentººº to Yizræ`e´l יִזרְעֶאל;º forº Yôräm יוֹרָםº layºº there.º And ´Áçazyà אֲחַזיָהº kingº of Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº was come downºº to seeººº Yôräm יוֹרָם.º

 9:16 So Yehu rode in a chariot, and went to Yizreel; for Yoram lay there. And Achazyah king of Yehudah was come down to see Yoram.

 9:17 And there stoodºº a watchmanºº onº the towerº in Yizræ`e´l יִזרְעֶאל,º and he spiedººº the companyº of Yëhû´ יֵהוּאº as he came,ºº and said,ºº Iº seeºº a company.º And Yôräm יוֹרָםº said,ºº Takeºº an horseman,º and sendºº to meetººº them, and let him say,ºº [Is it] peace?º

 9:17 And there stood a watchman on the tower in Yizreel, and he spied the company of Yehu as he came, and said, I see a company. And Yoram said, Take an horseman, and send to meet them, and let him say, [Is it] peace?

 9:18 So there wentººº one on horsebackººº to meetººº him, and said,ºº Thusº saithºº the king,º [Is it] peace?º And Yëhû´ יֵהוּאº said,ºº Whatº hast thou to do with peace?º turnºº thee behindºº me. And the watchmanºº told,ºº saying,ºº The messengerº cameºº toº them,º but he cometh not again.ººº

 9:18 So there went one on horseback to meet him, and said, Thus saith the king, [Is it] peace? And Yehu said, What hast thou to do with peace? turn thee behind me. And the watchman told, saying, The messenger came to them, but he cometh not again.

 9:19 Then he sent outºº a secondº on horseback,ººº which cameºº toº them, and said,ºº Thusº saithºº the king,º [Is it] peace?º And Yëhû´ יֵהוּאº answered,ºº Whatº hast thou to do with peace?º turnºº thee behindºº me.

 9:19 Then he sent out a second on horseback, which came to them, and said, Thus saith the king, [Is it] peace? And Yehu answered, What hast thou to do with peace? turn thee behind me.

 9:20 And the watchmanºº told,ºº saying,ºº He cameºº evenº untoº them, and cometh not again:ººº and the drivingº [is] like the drivingº of Yëhû´ יֵהוּאº the sonº of Nimšî נִמשִׁי;º forº he drivethºº furiously.º

 9:20 And the watchman told, saying, He came even unto them, and cometh not again: and the driving [is] like the driving of Yehu the son of Nimshi; for he driveth furiously.

 9:21 And Yôräm יוֹרָםº said,ºº Make ready.ºº And his chariotº was made ready.ºº And Yôräm יוֹרָםº kingº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº and ´Áçazyà אֲחַזיָהº kingº of Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº went out,ºº eachº in his chariot,º and they went outºº againstººº Yëhû´ יֵהוּא,º and metºº him in the portionº of Nävô± נָבוֹתº the Yizræ`ë´lî יִזרְעֵאלִי.º

 9:21 And Yoram said, Make ready. And his chariot was made ready. And Yoram king of Yisrael and Achazyah king of Yehudah went out, each in his chariot, and they went out against Yehu, and met him in the portion of Navoth the Yizreeli.

 9:22 And it came to pass,º when Yôräm יוֹרָםº sawººº Yëhû´ יֵהוּא,º that he said,ºº [Is it] peace,º Yëhû´ יֵהוּא?º And he answered,ºº Whatº peace,º so long asº the whoredomsº of thy motherº ´Îzevel אִיזֶבֶלº and her witchcraftsº [are so] many?º

 9:22 And it came to pass, when Yoram saw Yehu, that he said, [Is it] peace, Yehu? And he answered, What peace, so long as the whoredoms of thy mother Izevel and her witchcrafts [are so] many?

 9:23 And Yôräm יוֹרָםº turnedºº his hands,º and fled,ºº and saidºº toº ´Áçazyà אֲחַזיָה,º [There is] treachery,º O ´Áçazyà אֲחַזיָה.º

 9:23 And Yoram turned his hands, and fled, and said to Achazyah, [There is] treachery, O Achazyah.

 9:24 And Yëhû´ יֵהוּאº drew a bowº with his fullºº strength,º and smoteººº Yæhôräm יְהוֹרָםº betweenº his arms,º and the arrowº went outºº at his heart,ºº and he sunk downºº in his chariot.º

 9:24 And Yehu drew a bow with his full strength, and smote Yehoram between his arms, and the arrow went out at his heart, and he sunk down in his chariot.

 9:25 Then saidºº [Yëhû´ יֵהוּא] toº Biðkar בִּדקַרº his captain,º Take up,ºº [and] castºº him in the portionº of the fieldº of Nävô± נָבוֹתº the Yizræ`ë´lî יִזרְעֵאלִי:º forº rememberºº how that, when Iº and thouºº rodeºº togetherº afterº ´Aç´äv אַחאָבº his father,º Yähwè יָהוֶהº laidººº thisº burdenº uponº him;

 9:25 Then said [Yehu] to Bidqar his captain, Take up, [and] cast him in the portion of the field of Navoth the Yizreeli: for remember how that, when I and thou rode together after Achav his father, Yahweh laid this burden upon him;

 9:26 Surelyºº I have seenºº yesterdayºº the bloodº of Nävô± נָבוֹת,º and the bloodº of his sons,º saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶה;º and I will requiteºº thee in thisº plat,º saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶה.º Nowº therefore takeºº [and] castºº him into the platº [of ground], according to the wordº of Yähwè יָהוֶה.º

 9:26 Surely I have seen yesterday the blood of Navoth, and the blood of his sons, saith Yahweh; and I will requite thee in this plat, saith Yahweh. Now therefore take [and] cast him into the plat [of ground], according to the word of Yahweh.

 9:27 ¶ But when ´Áçazyà אֲחַזיָהº the kingº of Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº sawºº [this], he fledºº by the wayº of the gardenº house.º And Yëhû´ יֵהוּאº followedºº afterº him, and said,ºº Smiteºº him alsoº inº the chariot.º [And they did so] at the going upº to Gûr גּוּר,º whichº [is] byº Yivlæ`äm יִבלְעָם.º And he fledºº to Mæqiddô מְגִדּוֹ,º and diedºº there.º

 9:27 ¶ But when Achazyah the king of Yehudah saw [this], he fled by the way of the garden house. And Yehu followed after him, and said, Smite him also in the chariot. [And they did so] at the going up to Gur, which [is] by Yivleam. And he fled to Megiddo, and died there.

 9:28 And his servantsº carriedºº him in a chariotºº to Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַם,º and buriedºº him in his sepulchreº withº his fathersº in the cityº of Däwið דָּוִד.º

 9:28 And his servants carried him in a chariot to Yerushalaim, and buried him in his sepulchre with his fathers in the city of Dawid.

 9:29 And in the eleventhººº yearº of Yôräm יוֹרָםº the sonº of ´Aç´äv אַחאָבº began ´Áçazyà אֲחַזיָהº to reignºº overº Yæhûðà יְהוּדָה.º

 9:29 And in the eleventh year of Yoram the son of Achav began Achazyah to reign over Yehudah.

 9:30 ¶ And when Yëhû´ יֵהוּאº was comeºº to Yizræ`e´l יִזרְעֶאל,º ´Îzevel אִיזֶבֶלº heardºº [of it]; and she paintedººº her face,º and tiredººº her head,º and looked outºº atº a window.º

 9:30 ¶ And when Yehu was come to Yizreel, Izevel heard [of it]; and she painted her face, and tired her head, and looked out at a window.

 9:31 And as Yëhû´ יֵהוּאº entered inºº at the gate,º she said,ºº [Had] Zimrî זִמרִיº peace,º who slewºº his ´áðôn אֲדוֹן?º

 9:31 And as Yehu entered in at the gate, she said, [Had] Zimri peace, who slew his adon?

 9:32 And he lifted upºº his faceº toº the window,º and said,ºº Whoº [is] on my side?º who?º And there looked outºº toº him twoº [or] threeº eunuchs.º

 9:32 And he lifted up his face to the window, and said, Who [is] on my side? who? And there looked out to him two [or] three eunuchs.

 9:33 And he said,ºº Throw her down.ºº So they threw her down:ºº and [some] of her bloodºº was sprinkledºº onº the wall,º and onº the horses:º and he trode her under foot.ºº

 9:33 And he said, Throw her down. So they threw her down: and [some] of her blood was sprinkled on the wall, and on the horses: and he trode her under foot.

 9:34 And when he was come in,ºº he did eatºº and drink,ºº and said,ºº Go,ºº seeº nowºº thisº cursedºº [woman], and buryºº her: forº sheº [is] a king'sº daughter.º

 9:34 And when he was come in, he did eat and drink, and said, Go, see now this cursed [woman], and bury her: for she [is] a king's daughter.

 9:35 And they wentººº to buryºº her: but they foundºº no moreº of her thanºº the skull,º and the feet,º and the palmsº of [her] hands.º

 9:35 And they went to bury her: but they found no more of her than the skull, and the feet, and the palms of [her] hands.

 9:36 Wherefore they came again,ºº and toldºº him. And he said,ºº Thisº [is] the wordº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º whichº he spakeºº byº his servantº ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº the Tišbî תִּשׁבִּי,º saying,ºº In the portionº of Yizræ`e´l יִזרְעֶאלº shall dogsº eatººº the fleshº of ´Îzevel אִיזֶבֶל:º

 9:36 Wherefore they came again, and told him. And he said, This [is] the word of Yahweh, which he spake by his servant Eliyyah the Tishbi, saying, In the portion of Yizreel shall dogs eat the flesh of Izevel:

 9:37 And the carcaseº of ´Îzevel אִיזֶבֶלº shall beº as dungº uponº the faceº of the fieldº in the portionº of Yizræ`e´l יִזרְעֶאל;º [so] thatº they shall notº say,ºº Thisº [is] ´Îzevel אִיזֶבֶל.º

 9:37 And the carcase of Izevel shall be as dung upon the face of the field in the portion of Yizreel; [so] that they shall not say, This [is] Izevel.
