 14:1 ¶ Now it came to pass° upon a day,° that Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן°° the son° of Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° said°° unto° the young man° that bare°° his armour,° Come,°°° and let us go over°° to° the Pælištîm's פְּלִשׁתִּים° garrison,° that° [is] on the other side.°°° But he told°° not° his father.°

 14:1 ¶ Now it came to pass upon a day, that Yehonathan the son of Shaul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Pelishtim's garrison, that [is] on the other side. But he told not his father.

 14:2 And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° tarried°° in the uttermost° part° of Giv`à גִּבעָה° under° a pomegranate tree° which° [is] in Miqrôn מִגרוֹן:° and the people° that° [were] with° him [were] about six° hundred° men;°

 14:2 And Shaul tarried in the uttermost part of Givah under a pomegranate tree which [is] in Migron: and the people that [were] with him [were] about six hundred men;

 14:3 And ´Áçiyyà אֲחִיָּה,° the son° of ´Áçiţûv אֲחִטוּב,° ´Î Cävôđ's אִי־כָּבוֹד° brother,° the son° of Pînçäs פִּינחָס,° the son° of `Ëlî עֵלִי,° Yähwè's יָהוֶה° priest° in Šîlò שִׁילֹה,° wearing°° an ephod.° And the people° knew°° not° that° Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן°° was gone.°°

 14:3 And Achiyyah, the son of Achituv, I-Kavod's brother, the son of Pinchas, the son of Eli, Yahweh's priest in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people knew not that Yehonathan was gone.

 14:4 ¶ And between° the passages,° by which° Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן°° sought°° to go over°° unto° the Pælištîm's פְּלִשׁתִּים° garrison,° [there was] a sharp° rock° on the one°° side,°° and a sharp° rock° on the other°° side:°° and the name° of the one° [was] Bôxëx בּוֹצֵץ,° and the name° of the other° Sennè סֶנֶּה.°

 14:4 ¶ And between the passages, by which Yehonathan sought to go over unto the Pelishtim's garrison, [there was] a sharp rock on the one side, and a sharp rock on the other side: and the name of the one [was] Botzetz, and the name of the other Senneh.

 14:5 The forefront° of the one° [was] situate° northward°° over against° Miȼmäŝ מִכמָשׂ,° and the other° southward°° over against° Giv`à גִּבעָה.°

 14:5 The forefront of the one [was] situate northward over against Mikhmas, and the other southward over against Givah.

 14:6 And Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן° said°° to° the young man° that bare°° his armour,° Come,°°° and let us go over°° unto° the garrison° of these° uncircumcised:° it may be that° Yähwè יָהוֶה° will work°° for us: for° [there is] no° restraint° to Yähwè יָהוֶה° to save°° by many° or° by few.°

 14:6 And Yehonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that Yahweh will work for us: for [there is] no restraint to Yahweh to save by many or by few.

 14:7 And his armourbearer°°° said°° unto him, Do°° all° that° [is] in thine heart:° turn°° thee; behold,° I [am] with° thee according to thy heart.°

 14:7 And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that [is] in thine heart: turn thee; behold, I [am] with thee according to thy heart.

 14:8 Then said°° Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן,° Behold,° we° will pass over°° unto° [these] men,°° and we will discover°° ourselves° unto° them.

 14:8 Then said Yehonathan, Behold, we will pass over unto [these] men, and we will discover ourselves unto them.

 14:9 If° they say°° thus° unto° us, Tarry°° until° we come°° to° you; then we will stand still°° in our place,° and will not° go up°° unto° them.

 14:9 If they say thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you; then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto them.

 14:10 But if° they say°° thus,° Come up°° unto° us; then we will go up:°° for° Yähwè יָהוֶה° hath delivered°° them into our hand:° and this° [shall be] a sign° unto us.

 14:10 But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for Yahweh hath delivered them into our hand: and this [shall be] a sign unto us.

 14:11 And both° of them discovered°° themselves° unto° the garrison° of the Pælištîm פְּלִשׁתִּים:° and the Pælištîm פְּלִשׁתִּים° said,°° Behold,° the `Ivrîm עִברִים° come forth°° out of° the holes° where°° they had hid°° themselves.°

 14:11 And both of them discovered themselves unto the garrison of the Pelishtim: and the Pelishtim said, Behold, the Ivrim come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves.

 14:12 And the men°° of the garrison° answered°°° Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן°° and his armourbearer,°°° and said,°° Come up°° to° us, and we will shew°° you a thing.° And Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן°° said°° unto° his armourbearer,°°° Come up°° after° me: for° Yähwè יָהוֶה° hath delivered°° them into the hand° of Yiŝrä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל.°

 14:12 And the men of the garrison answered Yehonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will shew you a thing. And Yehonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me: for Yahweh hath delivered them into the hand of Yisrael.

 14:13 And Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן°° climbed up°° upon° his hands° and upon° his feet,° and his armourbearer°°° after° him: and they fell°° before° Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן;°° and his armourbearer°°° slew°° after° him.

 14:13 And Yehonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armourbearer after him: and they fell before Yehonathan; and his armourbearer slew after him.

 14:14 And that first° slaughter,° which° Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן°° and his armourbearer°°° made,°° was° about twenty° men,° within as it were an half° acre° of land,° [which] a yoke° [of oxen might plow].

 14:14 And that first slaughter, which Yehonathan and his armourbearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were an half acre of land, [which] a yoke [of oxen might plow].

 14:17 Then said°° Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° unto the people° that° [were] with° him, Number°° now,° and see°° who° is gone°° from°° us. And when they had numbered,°° behold,° Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן°° and his armourbearer°°° [were] not° [there].

 14:17 Then said Shaul unto the people that [were] with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us. And when they had numbered, behold, Yehonathan and his armourbearer [were] not [there].

 14:18 And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° said°° unto ´Áçiyyà אֲחִיָּה,° Bring hither°° the ark° of ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים.° For° the ark° of ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים° was° at that° time° with the children° of Yiŝrä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל.°

 14:18 And Shaul said unto Achiyyah, Bring hither the ark of Elohim. For the ark of Elohim was at that time with the children of Yisrael.

 14:19 ¶ And it came to pass,° while° Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° talked°° unto° the priest,° that the noise° that° [was] in the host° of the Pælištîm פְּלִשׁתִּים° went°° on°° and increased:°° and Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° said°° unto° the priest,° Withdraw°° thine hand.°

 14:19 ¶ And it came to pass, while Shaul talked unto the priest, that the noise that [was] in the host of the Pelishtim went on and increased: and Shaul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.

 14:20 And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° and all° the people° that° [were] with° him assembled°° themselves,° and they came°° to° the battle:° and, behold,° every man's° sword° was° against his fellow,° [and there was] a very° great° discomfiture.°

 14:20 And Shaul and all the people that [were] with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold, every man's sword was against his fellow, [and there was] a very great discomfiture.

 14:21 Moreover the `Ivrîm עִברִים° [that] were° with the Pælištîm פְּלִשׁתִּים° before° that time,° which° went up°° with° them into the camp° [from the country] round about,° even they° also° [turned] to be° with° the Yiŝræ´ëlîm יִשׂרְאֵלִים° that° [were] with° Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° and Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן.°°

 14:21 Moreover the Ivrim [that] were with the Pelishtim before that time, which went up with them into the camp [from the country] round about, even they also [turned] to be with the Yisreelim that [were] with Shaul and Yehonathan.

 14:22 Likewise all° the men° of Yiŝrä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל° which had hid°° themselves° in mount° ´Efrayim אֶפרַיִם,° [when] they heard°° that° the Pælištîm פְּלִשׁתִּים° fled,°° even they° also° followed hard°° after° them in the battle.°

 14:22 Likewise all the men of Yisrael which had hid themselves in mount Efrayim, [when] they heard that the Pelishtim fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.

 14:23 So Yähwè יָהוֶה° saved°°° Yiŝrä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל° that° day:° and the battle° passed over°° unto° Bêŧ ´Äwen בֵּית־אָוֶן.°

 14:23 So Yahweh saved Yisrael that day: and the battle passed over unto Beth-Awen.

 14:24 ¶ And the men° of Yiŝrä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל° were distressed°° that° day:° for Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° had adjured°°° the people,° saying,°° Cursed°° [be] the man° that° eateth°° [any] food° until° evening,° that I may be avenged°° on mine enemies.°°° So none°° of the people° tasted°° [any] food.°

 14:24 ¶ And the men of Yisrael were distressed that day: for Shaul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed [be] the man that eateth [any] food until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted [any] food.

 14:25 And all° [they of] the land° came°° to a wood;° and there was° honey° upon°° the ground.°

 14:25 And all [they of] the land came to a wood; and there was honey upon the ground.

 14:26 And when the people° were come°° into° the wood,° behold,° the honey° dropped;° but no° man put°° his hand° to° his mouth:° for° the people° feared°°° the oath.°

 14:26 And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath.

 14:27 But Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן°° heard°° not° when his father° charged°° the people° with the oath:°°°° wherefore he put forth°°° the end° of the rod° that° [was] in his hand,° and dipped°° it° in an honeycomb,°° and put°° his hand° to° his mouth;° and his eyes° were enlightened.°°

 14:27 But Yehonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that [was] in his hand, and dipped it in an honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened.

 14:28 Then answered°° one° of the people,°° and said,°° Thy father° straitly°° charged°° the people° with an oath,°°°° saying,°° Cursed°° [be] the man° that° eateth°° [any] food° this day.° And the people° were faint.°°°

 14:28 Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed [be] the man that eateth [any] food this day. And the people were faint.

 14:29 Then said°° Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן,°° My father° hath troubled°°° the land:° see,°° I pray you,° how° mine eyes° have been enlightened,°° because° I tasted°° a little° of this° honey.°

 14:29 Then said Yehonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.

 14:30 How much more,°° if haply°° the people° had eaten°° freely°° to day° of the spoil°° of their enemies°° which° they found?°° for° had there not° been now° a much greater°° slaughter° among the Pælištîm פְּלִשׁתִּים?°

 14:30 How much more, if haply the people had eaten freely to day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Pelishtim?

 14:31 And they smote°° the Pælištîm פְּלִשׁתִּים° that° day° from Miȼmäŝ מִכמָשׂ°° to ´Ayyälôn אַיָּלוֹן:° and the people° were very° faint.°°°

 14:31 And they smote the Pelishtim that day from Mikhmas to Ayyalon: and the people were very faint.

 14:32 And the people° flew°°° upon° the spoil,° and took°° sheep,° and oxen,° and calves,°° and slew°° [them] on the ground:° and the people° did eat°° [them] with° the blood.°

 14:32 And the people flew upon the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew [them] on the ground: and the people did eat [them] with the blood.

 14:33 ¶ Then they told°° Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,° saying,°° Behold,° the people° sin°° against Yähwè יָהוֶה,° in that they eat°° with° the blood.° And he said,°° Ye have transgressed:°° roll°° a great° stone° unto° me this day.°

 14:33 ¶ Then they told Shaul, saying, Behold, the people sin against Yahweh, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed: roll a great stone unto me this day.

 14:34 And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° said,°° Disperse°° yourselves° among the people,° and say°° unto them, Bring me hither°°° every man° his ox,° and every man° his sheep,° and slay°° [them] here,° and eat;°° and sin°° not° against Yähwè יָהוֶה° in eating°° with° the blood.° And all° the people° brought°° every man° his ox° with° him° that night,° and slew°° [them] there.°

 14:34 And Shaul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay [them] here, and eat; and sin not against Yahweh in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and slew [them] there.

 14:35 And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° built°° an altar° unto Yähwè יָהוֶה:° the same was the first°° altar° that he built°° unto Yähwè יָהוֶה.°

 14:35 And Shaul built an altar unto Yahweh: the same was the first altar that he built unto Yahweh.

 14:36 ¶ And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° said,°° Let us go down°° after° the Pælištîm פְּלִשׁתִּים° by night,° and spoil°° them until° the morning° light,° and let us not° leave°° a man° of them. And they said,°° Do°° whatsoever° seemeth° good° unto thee. Then said°° the priest,° Let us draw near°° hither° unto° ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים.°

 14:36 ¶ And Shaul said, Let us go down after the Pelishtim by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near hither unto Elohim.

 14:37 And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° asked°° counsel° of ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,° Shall I go down°° after° the Pælištîm פְּלִשׁתִּים?° wilt thou deliver°° them into the hand° of Yiŝrä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל?° But he answered°° him not° that° day.°

 14:37 And Shaul asked counsel of Elohim, Shall I go down after the Pelishtim? wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Yisrael? But he answered him not that day.

 14:38 And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° said,°° Draw ye near°° hither,° all° the chief° of the people:° and know°° and see°° wherein° this sin° hath been° this° day.°

 14:38 And Shaul said, Draw ye near hither, all the chief of the people: and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day.

 14:39 For,° [as] Yähwè יָהוֶה° liveth,° which saveth°°° Yiŝrä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,° though°° it be° in Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן°° my son,° he shall surely°° die.°° But [there was] not a man° among all°° the people° [that] answered°° him.

 14:39 For, [as] Yahweh liveth, which saveth Yisrael, though it be in Yehonathan my son, he shall surely die. But [there was] not a man among all the people [that] answered him.

 14:40 Then said°° he unto° all° Yiŝrä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,° Be° ye° on one° side,° and I° and Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן°° my son° will be° on the other° side.° And the people° said°° unto° Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,° Do°° what seemeth° good° unto thee.

 14:40 Then said he unto all Yisrael, Be ye on one side, and I and Yehonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Shaul, Do what seemeth good unto thee.

 14:41 Therefore Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° said°° unto° Yähwè יָהוֶה° ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים° of Yiŝrä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,° Give°° a perfect° [lot]. And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° and Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן°° were taken:°° but the people° escaped.°°

 14:41 Therefore Shaul said unto Yahweh Elohim of Yisrael, Give a perfect [lot]. And Shaul and Yehonathan were taken: but the people escaped.

 14:42 And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° said,°° Cast°° [lots] between° me and Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן°° my son.° And Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן°° was taken.°°

 14:42 And Shaul said, Cast [lots] between me and Yehonathan my son. And Yehonathan was taken.

 14:43 Then Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° said°° to° Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן,°° Tell°° me what° thou hast done.°° And Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן°° told°° him, and said,°° I did but°° taste°° a little° honey° with the end° of the rod° that° [was] in mine hand,° [and], lo,° I must die.°°

 14:43 Then Shaul said to Yehonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Yehonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that [was] in mine hand, [and], lo, I must die.

 14:44 And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° answered,°° ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים° do° so°°° and more° also:°°° for° thou shalt surely°° die,°° Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן.°°

 14:44 And Shaul answered, Elohim do so and more also: for thou shalt surely die, Yehonathan.

 14:45 And the people° said°° unto° Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,° Shall Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן°° die,°° who° hath wrought°° this° great° salvation° in Yiŝrä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל?° God forbid:° [as] Yähwè יָהוֶה° liveth,° there shall not° one hair°° of his head° fall°° to the ground;° for° he hath wrought°° with° ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים° this° day.° So the people° rescued°°° Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן,°° that he died°° not.°

 14:45 And the people said unto Shaul, Shall Yehonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Yisrael? God forbid: [as] Yahweh liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with Elohim this day. So the people rescued Yehonathan, that he died not.

 14:46 Then Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° went up°° from following°° the Pælištîm פְּלִשׁתִּים:° and the Pælištîm פְּלִשׁתִּים° went°° to their own place.°

 14:46 Then Shaul went up from following the Pelishtim: and the Pelishtim went to their own place.

 14:47 ¶ So Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° took°° the kingdom° over° Yiŝrä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,° and fought°° against all° his enemies°° on every side,° against Mô´äv מוֹאָב,° and against the children° of `Ammôn עַמּוֹן,° and against ´Éđôm אֱדוֹם,° and against the kings° of Xôvà צוֹבָה,° and against the Pælištîm פְּלִשׁתִּים:° and whithersoever°° he turned°° himself, he vexed°° [them].

 14:47 ¶ So Shaul took the kingdom over Yisrael, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moav, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Tzovah, and against the Pelishtim: and whithersoever he turned himself, he vexed [them].

 14:48 And he gathered°° an host,° and smote°°° the `Ámälëkîm עֲמָלֵקִים,° and delivered°°° Yiŝrä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל° out of the hands°° of them that spoiled°° them.

 14:48 And he gathered an host, and smote the Amaleqim, and delivered Yisrael out of the hands of them that spoiled them.

 14:49 Now the sons° of Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° were° Yæhônäŧän יְהוֹנָתָן,°° and Yišwî יִשׁוִי,° and Malcî Šûå` מַלכִּי־שׁוּעַ:° and the names° of his two° daughters° [were these]; the name° of the firstborn° Mërav מֵרַב,° and the name° of the younger° Mîȼal מִיכַל:°

 14:49 Now the sons of Shaul were Yehonathan, and Yishwi, and Malki-Shua: and the names of his two daughters [were these]; the name of the firstborn Merav, and the name of the younger Mikhal:

 14:50 And the name° of Šä´ûl's שָׁאוּל° wife° [was] ´Áçînö`am אֲחִינֹעַם,° the daughter° of ´Áçîma`ax אֲחִימַעַץ:° and the name° of the captain° of his host° [was] ´Avnër אַבנֵר,° the son° of Nër נֵר,° Šä´ûl's שָׁאוּל° uncle.°

 14:50 And the name of Shaul's wife [was] Achinoam, the daughter of Achimaatz: and the name of the captain of his host [was] Avner, the son of Ner, Shaul's uncle.

 14:51 And Kîš קִישׁ° [was] the father° of Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל;° and Nër נֵר° the father° of ´Avnër אַבנֵר° [was] the son° of ´Ávî´ël אֲבִיאֵל.°
