Luke 9
1 Christ sendeth his Apostles to work miracles, and to preach. 7 Herod desireth to see Christ. 17 Christ feedeth five thousand: 18 enquireth what opinion the world had of him: 22 foretelleth his passion: 23 proposeth to all the pattern of his patience. 28 The transfiguration. 37 He healeth the lunatick: 43 again forewarneth his disciples of his passion: 46 commendeth humility: 51 biddeth them to shew mildness towards all, without desire of revenge. 57 Divers would follow him, but upon conditions.
9:1
And He called 4779 the twelve 1427 together 4779, and gave 1325 them power 1411 and authority 1849 over 1909 all 3956 the demons 1140 and to heal 2323 diseases 3554.
9:2
And He sent 649 them out to proclaim 2784 the kingdom 932 of God 2316 and to perform 2390 healing 2390.
9:3
And He said 3004 to them, “Take 142 nothing 3367 for [your] journey 3598, neither 3383 a staff 4464, nor 3383 a bag 4082, nor 3383 bread 740, nor 3383 money 694; and do not [even] have 2192 two 1417 tunics 5509 apiece 303.
9:4
“Whatever 3739 house 3614 you enter 1525, stay 3306 there 1563 until 2532 you leave 1831 that city 1563.
9:5
“And as for those who do not receive 1209 you, as you go 1831 out from that city 4172, shake 660 the dust 2868 off 660 your feet 4228 as a testimony 3142 against 1909 them.”
9:6
Departing 1831, they [began] going 1330 throughout 1330 the villages 2968, preaching 2097 the gospel 2097 and healing 2323 everywhere 3837.
9:7
¶ Now 1161 Herod 2264 the tetrarch 5068a heard 191 of all 3956 that was happening 1096; and he was greatly 1280 perplexed 1280, because 1223 it was said 3004 by some 5100 that John 2491 had risen 1453 from the dead 3498,

and by some 5100 that Elijah 2243 had appeared 5316, and by others 243 that one 5100 of the prophets 4396 of old 744 had risen 450 again 450.
9:9
Herod 2264 said 3004, “I myself 1473 had John 2491 beheaded 607; but who 5101 is this 3778 man 3778 about 4012 whom 3739 I hear 191 such 5108 things 5108?” And he kept trying 2212 to see 3708 Him.
9:10
¶ When the apostles 652 returned 5290, they gave 1334 an account 1334 to Him of all 3745 that they had done 4160. Taking 3880 them with Him, He withdrew 5298 by Himself 2398 to a city 4172 called 2564 Bethsaida 966.
9:11
But the crowds 3793 were aware 1097 of this and followed 190 Him; and welcoming 588 them, He [began] speaking 2980 to them about 4012 the kingdom 932 of God 2316 and curing 2390 those 3588 who had 2192 need 5532 of healing 2322.
9:12
¶ Now the day 2250 was ending 2827, and the twelve 1427 came 4334 and said 3004 to Him, “Send 630 the crowd 3793 away 630, that they may go 4198 into the surrounding 2945 villages 2968 and countryside 68 and find 2647 lodging 2647 and get 2147 something 1979 to eat 1979; for here 5602 we are in a desolate 2048 place 5117.”

But He said 3004 to them, “You give 1325 them [something] to eat 2068!” And they said 3004, “We have no 3756 more 4183 than 2228 five 4002 loaves 740 and two 1417 fish 2486, unless 1487 3385 perhaps 3385 we go 4198 and buy 59 food 1033 for all 3956 these 3778 people 2992.”

(For there were about 5616 five 4000 thousand 4000 men 435.) And He said 3004 to His disciples 3101, “Have them sit 2625 down 2625 [to eat] in groups 2828 of about 5616 fifty 4004 each 303.”
9:15
They did 4160 so 3779, and had them all 537a sit 2625 down 2625.
9:16
Then 2532 He took 2983 the five 4002 loaves 740 and the two 1417 fish 2486, and looking 308 up to heaven 3772, He blessed 2127 them, and broke 2622 [them], and kept giving 1325 [them] to the disciples 3101 to set 3908 before 3908 the people 3793.
9:17
And they all 3956 ate 2068 and were satisfied 5526; and the broken 2801 pieces 2801 which they had left 4052 over 4052 were picked 142 up, twelve 1427 baskets 2894 [full].
9:18
¶ And it happened 1096 that while 1722 He was praying 4336 alone 3441, the disciples 3101 were with Him, and He questioned 1905 them, saying 3004, “Who 5101 do the people 3793 say 3004 that I am 1510?”
9:19
They answered 611 and said 3004, “John 2491 the Baptist 910, and others 243 [say] Elijah 2243; but others 243, that one 5100 of the prophets 4396 of old 744 has risen 450 again 450.”
9:20
And He said 3004 to them, “But who 5101 do you say 3004 that I am 1510?” And Peter 4074 answered 611 and said 3004, “The Christ 5547 of God 2316.”
9:21
But He warned 2008 them and instructed 3853 [them] not to tell 3004 this 3778 to anyone 3367,
9:22
saying 3004, “The Son 5207 of Man 444 must 1163 suffer 3958 many 4183 things 4183 and be rejected 593 by the elders 4245 and chief 749 priests 749 and scribes 1122, and be killed 615 and be raised 1453 up on the third 5154 day 2250.”
9:23
¶ And He was saying 3004 to [them] all 3956, “If 1487 anyone 5100 wishes 2309 to come 2064 after 3694 Me, he must deny 720 himself 1438, and take 142 up his cross 4716 daily 2596 2250 and follow 190 Me.
9:24
“For whoever 3739 1437 wishes 2309 to save 4982 his life 5590 will lose 622 it, but whoever 3739 302 loses 622 his life 5590 for My sake 1752a, he is the one who will save 4982 it.
9:25
“For what 5101 is a man 444 profited 5623 if he gains 2770 the whole 3650 world 2889, and loses 622 or 2228 forfeits 2210 himself 1438?
9:26
“For whoever 3739 302 is ashamed 1870 of Me and My words 3056, the Son 5207 of Man 444 will be ashamed 1870 of him when 3752 He comes 2064 in His glory 1391, and [the glory] of the Father 3962 and of the holy 40 angels 32a.
9:27
“But I say 3004 to you truthfully 230, there are some 5100 of those 3588 standing 2476 here 847 who 3739 will not taste 1089 death 2288 until 2193 they see 3708 the kingdom 932 of God 2316.”
9:28
¶ Some 5616 eight 3638 days 2250 after 3326 these 3778 sayings 3056, He took 3880 along 3880 Peter 4074 and John 2491 and James 2385, and went 305 up on the mountain 3735 to pray 4336.
9:29
And while 1722 He was praying 4336, the appearance 1491b of His face 4383 became 1096 different 2087, and His clothing 2441 [became] white 3022 [and] gleaming 1823.
9:30
And behold 2400, two 1417 men 435 were talking 4814 with Him; and they were Moses 3475 and Elijah 2243,
9:31
who 3739, appearing 3708 in glory 1391, were speaking 3004 of His departure 1841 which 3739 He was about 3195 to accomplish 4137 at Jerusalem 2419.
9:32
Now 1161 Peter 4074 and his companions 3588 4862 had been 1510 overcome 916 with sleep 5258; but when they were fully 1235 awake 1235, they saw 3708 His glory 1391 and the two 1417 men 435 standing 4921 with Him.
9:33
And as these 846 were leaving 1316 Him, Peter 4074 said 3004 to Jesus 2424, “Master 1988b, it is good 2570 for us to be here 5602; let us make 4160 three 5140 tabernacles 4633: one 1520 for You, and one 1520 for Moses 3475, and one 1520 for Elijah 2243”—not realizing 3609a what 3739 he was saying 3004.

While he was saying 3004 this 3778, a cloud 3507 formed 1096 and [began] to overshadow 1982 them; and they were afraid 5399 as they entered 1525 the cloud 3507.
9:35
Then 2532 a voice 5456 came 1096 out of the cloud 3507, saying 3004, “This 3778 is My Son 5207, [My] Chosen 1586 One; listen 191 to Him!”
9:36
And when 1722 the voice 5456 had spoken 1096, Jesus 2424 was found 2147 alone 3441. And they kept 4601 silent 4601, and reported 518 to no 3762 one 3762 in those 1565 days 2250 any 3762 of the things which 3739 they had seen 3708.
9:37
¶ On the next 1836 day 2250, when they came 1096 down 2718 from the mountain 3735, a large 4183 crowd 3793 met 4876 Him.
9:38
And a man 435 from the crowd 3793 shouted 994, saying 3004, “Teacher 1320, I beg 1189a You to look 1914 at my son 5207, for he is my only 3439 [boy],

and a spirit 4151 seizes 2983 him, and he suddenly 1810 screams 2896, and it throws 4682 him into a convulsion 4682 with foaming 876 [at the mouth]; and only 3433 with difficulty 3433 does it leave 672 him, mauling 4937 him [as it leaves 672].
9:40
“I begged 1189a Your disciples 3101 to cast 1544b it out, and they could 1410 not.”
9:41
And Jesus 2424 answered 611 and said 3004, “You unbelieving 571 and perverted 1294 generation 1074, how 2193 long 2193 4219 shall I be with you and put 430 up with you? Bring 4317 your son 5207 here 5602.”
9:42
While he was still 2089 approaching 4334, the demon 1140 slammed 4486 him [to the ground] and threw 4952 him into a convulsion 4952. But Jesus 2424 rebuked 2008 the unclean 169 spirit 4151, and healed 2390 the boy 3816 and gave 591 him back 591 to his father 3962.
9:43
And they were all 3956 amazed 1605 at the greatness 3168 of God 2316. ¶ But while everyone 3956 was marveling 2296 at all 3956 that He was doing 4160, He said 3004 to His disciples 3101,

“Let these 3778 words 3056 sink 5087 into your ears 3775; for the Son 5207 of Man 444 is going 3195 to be delivered 3860 into the hands 5495 of men 444.”
9:45
But they did not understand 50 this 3778 statement 4487, and it was concealed 3871 from them so 2443 that they would not perceive 143 it; and they were afraid 5399 to ask 2065 Him about 4012 this 3778 statement 4487.
9:46
¶ An argument 1261 started 1525 among 1722 them as to which 5101 of them might be the greatest 3173.
9:47
But Jesus 2424, knowing 3609a what 1261 they were thinking 1261 in their heart 2588, took 1949 a child 3813 and stood 2476 him by His side 3844,
9:48
and said 3004 to them, “Whoever 3739 1437 receives 1209 this 3778 child 3813 in My name 3686 receives 1209 Me, and whoever 3739 302 receives 1209 Me receives 1209 Him who sent 649 Me; for the one 3588 who is least 3398 among 1722 all 3956 of you, this 3778 is the one who is great 3173.”
9:49
¶ John 2491 answered 611 and said 3004, “Master 1988b, we saw 3708 someone 5100 casting 1544b out demons 1140 in Your name 3686; and we tried to prevent 2967 him because 3754 he does not follow 190 along with us.”
9:50
But Jesus 2424 said 3004 to him, “Do not hinder 2967 [him]; for he who 3739 is not against 2596 you is for you.”
9:51
¶ When 1722 the days 2250 were approaching 4845 for His ascension 354, He was determined 4741 to go 4198 to Jerusalem 2419;
9:52
and He sent 649 messengers 32a on ahead 4253 4383 of Him, and they went 4198 and entered 1525 a village 2968 of the Samaritans 4541 to make 2090 arrangements 2090 for Him.
9:53
But they did not receive 1209 Him, because 3754 He was traveling 4198 toward 1519 Jerusalem 2419.
9:54
When His disciples 3101 James 2385 and John 2491 saw 3708 [this], they said 3004, “Lord 2962, do You want 2309 us to command 3004 fire 4442 to come 2597 down 2597 from heaven 3772 and consume 355 them?”
9:55
But He turned 4762 and rebuked 2008 them, [[and said 3004, “You do not know 3609a what 4169 kind 4169 of spirit 4151 you are of;
9:56
for the Son 5207 of Man 444 did not come 2064 to destroy 622 men’s 444 lives 5590, but to save 4982 them.”]] And they went 4198 on to another 2087 village 2968.
9:57
¶ As they were going 4198 along 1722 the road 3598, someone 5100 said 3004 to Him, “I will follow 190 You wherever 3699 1437 You go 565.”
9:58
And Jesus 2424 said 3004 to him, “The foxes 258 have 2192 holes 5454 and the birds 4071 of the air 3772 [have] nests 2682, but the Son 5207 of Man 444 has 2192 nowhere 3756 4226 to lay 2827 His head 2776.”
9:59
And He said 3004 to another 2087, “Follow 190 Me.” But he said 3004, “Lord 2962, permit 2010 me first 4413 to go 565 and bury 2290 my father 3962.”
9:60
But He said 3004 to him, “Allow 863 the dead 3498 to bury 2290 their own 1438 dead 3498; but as for you, go 565 and proclaim 1229 everywhere 1229 the kingdom 932 of God 2316.”
9:61
Another 2087 also 2532 said 3004, “I will follow 190 You, Lord 2962; but first 4413 permit 2010 me to say 657 good-bye 657 to those 3588 at home 3624.”
9:62
But Jesus 2424 said 3004 to him, “No 3762 one 3762, after putting 1911 his hand 5495 to the plow 723 and looking 991 back 3694, is fit 2111 for the kingdom 932 of God 2316.”
