 1:1 Inasmuch 1895 as many 4183 have undertaken 2021 to compile 392 an account 1335 of the things 4229 accomplished 4135 among 1722 us,

 1:2 just 2531a as they were handed 3860 down 3860 to us by those 3588 who from the beginning 746 were eyewitnesses 845 and servants 5257 of the word 3056,

 1:3 it seemed 1380 fitting 1380 for me as well 2532, having investigated 3877 everything 3956 carefully 199 from the beginning 509, to write 1125 [it] out for you in consecutive 2517 order 2517, most 2903 excellent 2903 Theophilus 2321;

 1:4 so 2443 that you may know 1921 the exact 803 truth 803 about 4012 the things 3056 you have been taught 2727.

 1:5 ¶ In the days 2250 of Herod 2264, king 935 of Judea 2453, there was a priest 2409 named 3686 Zacharias 2197, of the division 2183 of Abijah 7; and he had a wife 1135 from the daughters 2364 of Aaron 2, and her name 3686 was Elizabeth 1665.

 1:6 They were both 297 righteous 1342 in the sight 1727 of God 2316, walking 4198 blamelessly 273 in all 3956 the commandments 1785 and requirements 1345 of the Lord 2962.

 1:7 But they had 1510 no 3756 child 5043, because 2530 Elizabeth 1665 was barren 4723, and they were both 297 advanced 4260 in years 2250.

 1:8 ¶ Now 1161 it happened 1096 [that] while 1722 he was performing 2407 his priestly 2407 service 2407 before 1725 God 2316 in the [appointed] order 5010 of his division 2183,

 1:9 according 2596 to the custom 1485 of the priestly 2405 office 2405, he was chosen 2975 by lot 2975 to enter 1525 the temple 3485 of the Lord 2962 and burn 2370 incense 2370.

 1:10 And the whole 3956 multitude 4128 of the people 2992 were in prayer 4336 outside 1854 at the hour 5610 of the incense 2368 offering.

 1:11 And an angel 32a of the Lord 2962 appeared 3708 to him, standing 2476 to the right 1188 of the altar 2379 of incense 2368.

 1:12 Zacharias 2197 was troubled 5015 when he saw 3708 [the angel], and fear 5401 gripped 1968 him.

 1:13 But the angel 32a said 3004 to him, “Do not be afraid 5399, Zacharias 2197, for your petition 1162 has been heard 1522, and your wife 1135 Elizabeth 1665 will bear 1080 you a son 5207, and you will give 2564 him the name 3686 John 2491.

 1:14 “You will have joy 5479 and gladness 20, and many 4183 will rejoice 5463 at his birth 1078.

 1:15 “For he will be great 3173 in the sight 1799 of the Lord 2962; and he will drink 4095 no 3756 3361 wine 3631 or 2532 liquor 4608, and he will be filled 4092a with the Holy 40 Spirit 4151 while yet 2089 in his mother’s 3384 womb 2836.

 1:16 “And he will turn 1994 many 4183 of the sons 5207 of Israel 2474 back 1994 to the Lord 2962 their God 2316.

 1:17 “It is he who will go 4281 [as a forerunner] before 1799 Him in the spirit 4151 and power 1411 of Elijah 2243, TO TURN 1994 THE HEARTS 2588 OF THE FATHERS 3962 BACK 1994 TO THE CHILDREN 5043, and the disobedient 545 to the attitude 5428 of the righteous 1342, so as to make 2090 ready 2090 a people 2992 prepared 2680 for the Lord 2962.”

 1:18 ¶ Zacharias 2197 said 3004 to the angel 32a, “How 2596 5101 will I know 1097 this 3778 [for certain]? For I am 1510 an old 4246 man 4246 and my wife 1135 is advanced 4260 in years 2250.”

 1:19 The angel 32a answered 611 and said 3004 to him, “I am 1510 Gabriel 1043, who stands 3936 in the presence 1799 of God 2316, and I have been sent 649 to speak 2980 to you and to bring 2097 you this 3778 good 2097 news 2097.

 1:20 “And behold 2400, you shall be silent 4623 and unable 3361 1410 to speak 2980 until 891 the day 2250 when 3739 these 3778 things 3778 take 1096 place 1096, because 473 3739 you did not believe 4100 my words 3056, which 3748 will be fulfilled 4137 in their proper 2540 time 2540.”

 1:21 ¶ The people 2992 were waiting 4328 for Zacharias 2197, and were wondering 2296 at his delay 5549 in the temple 3485.

 1:22 But when he came 1831 out, he was unable 3756 1410 to speak 2980 to them; and they realized 1921 that he had seen 3708 a vision 3701 in the temple 3485; and he kept making 1269 signs 1269 to them, and remained 1265 mute 2974.

 1:23 When 5613 the days 2250 of his priestly 3009 service 3009 were ended 4092a, he went 565 back 565 home 3624.

 1:24 ¶ After 3326 these 3778 days 2250 Elizabeth 1665 his wife 1135 became 4815 pregnant 4815, and she kept 4032 herself 1438 in seclusion 4032 for five 4002 months 3376, saying 3004,

 1:25 “This 3779 is the way 3779 the Lord 2962 has dealt 4160 with me in the days 2250 when 3739 He looked 1896 [with favor] upon [me], to take 851 away 851 my disgrace 3681 among 1722 men 444.”

 1:26 ¶ Now 1161 in the sixth 1623 month 3376 the angel 32a Gabriel 1043 was sent 649 from God 2316 to a city 4172 in Galilee 1056 called 3686 Nazareth 3478,

 1:27 to a virgin 3933 engaged 3423 to a man 435 whose 3739 name 3686 was Joseph 2501, of the descendants 3624 of David 1160b; and the virgin’s 3933 name 3686 was Mary 3137.

 1:28 And coming 1525 in, he said 3004 to her, “Greetings 5463, favored 5487 one! The Lord 2962 [is] with you.”

 1:29 But she was very 1298 perplexed 1298 at [this] statement 3056, and kept pondering 1260 what 4217 kind 4217 of salutation 783 this 3778 was.

 1:30 The angel 32a said 3004 to her, “Do not be afraid 5399, Mary 3137; for you have found 2147 favor 5485 with God 2316.

 1:31 “And behold 2400, you will conceive 4815 in your womb 1064 and bear 5088 a son 5207, and you shall name 3686 Him Jesus 2424.

 1:32 “He will be great 3173 and will be called 2564 the Son 5207 of the Most 5310 High 5310; and the Lord 2962 God 2316 will give 1325 Him the throne 2362 of His father 3962 David 1160b;

 1:33 and He will reign 936 over 1909 the house 3624 of Jacob 2384 forever 165, and His kingdom 932 will have no 3756 end 5056.”

 1:34 Mary 3137 said 3004 to the angel 32a, “How 4459 can this 3778 be, since 1893 I am a virgin 435 3756 1097?”

 1:35 The angel 32a answered 611 and said 3004 to her, “The Holy 40 Spirit 4151 will come 1904 upon you, and the power 1411 of the Most 5310 High 5310 will overshadow 1982 you; and for that reason 1352 the holy 40 Child 1080 shall be called 2564 the Son 5207 of God 2316.

 1:36 “And behold 2400, even 2532 your relative 4773b Elizabeth 1665 has also 2532 conceived 4815 a son 5207 in her old 1094 age 1094; and she who was called 2564 barren 4723 is now in her sixth 1623 month 3376.

 1:37 “For nothing 3756 3956 4487 will be impossible 101 with God 2316.”

 1:38 And Mary 3137 said 3004, “Behold 2400, the bondslave 1401 of the Lord 2962; may it be done 1096 to me according 2596 to your word 4487.” And the angel 32a departed 565 from her.

 1:39 ¶ Now 1161 at this 3778 time 2250 Mary 3137 arose 450 and went 4198 in a hurry 4710 to the hill 3714 country 3714, to a city 4172 of Judah 2455,

 1:40 and entered 1525 the house 3624 of Zacharias 2197 and greeted 782 Elizabeth 1665.

 1:41 When 5613 Elizabeth 1665 heard 191 Mary’s 3137 greeting 783, the baby 1025 leaped 4640 in her womb 2836; and Elizabeth 1665 was filled 4092a with the Holy 40 Spirit 4151.

 1:42 And she cried 400 out with a loud 3173 voice 2906 and said 3004, “Blessed 2127 [are] you among 1722 women 1135, and blessed 2127 [is] the fruit 2590 of your womb 2836!

 1:43 “And how 4159 has it [happened] to me, that the mother 3384 of my Lord 2962 would come 2064 to me?

 1:44 “For behold 2400, when 5613 the sound 5456 of your greeting 783 reached 1096 my ears 3775, the baby 1025 leaped 4640 in my womb 2836 for joy 20.

 1:45 “And blessed 3107 [is] she who believed 4100 that there would be a fulfillment 5050 of what had been spoken 2980 to her by the Lord 2962.”

 1:46 ¶ And Mary 3137 said 3004: “My soul 5590 exalts 3170 the Lord 2962,

 1:47 And my spirit 4151 has rejoiced 21 in God 2316 my Savior 4990.

 1:48 “For He has had 1914 regard 1914 for the humble 5014 state 5014 of His bondslave 1401; For behold 2400, from this 3568 time 3568 on all 3956 generations 1074 will count 3106 me blessed 3106.

 1:49 “For the Mighty 1415 One 1415 has done 4160 great 3173 things 3173 for me; And holy 40 is His name 3686.

 1:50 “AND HIS MERCY 1656 IS UPON GENERATION 1074 AFTER 2532 GENERATION 1074 TOWARD THOSE 3588 WHO FEAR 5399 HIM.

 1:51 “He has done 4160 mighty 2904 deeds 2904 with His arm 1023; He has scattered 1287 [those who were] proud 5244a in the thoughts 1271 of their heart 2588.

 1:52 “He has brought 2507 down 2507 rulers 1413 from [their] thrones 2362, And has exalted 5312 those who were humble 5011.

 1:53 “HE HAS FILLED 1705a THE HUNGRY 3983 WITH GOOD 18 THINGS 18; And sent 1821 away 1821 the rich 4147 empty-handed 2756.

 1:54 “He has given 482 help 482 to Israel 2474 His servant 3816, In remembrance 3403 of His mercy 1656,

 1:55 As He spoke 2980 to our fathers 3962, To Abraham 11 and his descendants 4690 forever 165.”

 1:56 ¶ And Mary 3137 stayed 3306 with her about 5613 three 5140 months 3376, and [then] returned 5290 to her home 3624.

 1:57 ¶ Now 1161 the time 5550 had come 4092a for Elizabeth 1665 to give 5088 birth 5088, and she gave 1080 birth 5088 to a son 5207.

 1:58 Her neighbors 4040 and her relatives 4773a heard 191 that the Lord 2962 had displayed 3170 His great 3170 mercy 1656 toward 3326 her; and they were rejoicing 4796 with her.

 1:59 ¶ And it happened 1096 that on the eighth 3590 day 2250 they came 2064 to circumcise 4059 the child 3813, and they were going to call 2564 him Zacharias 2197, after 1909 his father 3962.

 1:60 But his mother 3384 answered 611 and said 3004, “No 3780 indeed 3780; but he shall be called 2564 John 2491.”

 1:61 And they said 3004 to her, “There is no 3762 one 3762 among 1537 your relatives 4772 who 3739 is called 2564 by that name 3686.”

 1:62 And they made 1770 signs 1770 to his father 3962, as to what 5101 302 he wanted 2309 him called 2564.

 1:63 And he asked 154 for a tablet 4093 and wrote 1125 as follows 3004, “His name 3686 is John 2491.” And they were all 3956 astonished 2296.

 1:64 And at once 3916 his mouth 4750 was opened 455 and his tongue 1100 [loosed], and he [began] to speak 2980 in praise 2127 of God 2316.

 1:65 Fear 5401 came 1096 on all 3956 those 3588 living 4039 around 4039 them; and all 3956 these 3778 matters 4487 were being talked 1255 about 1255 in all 3650 the hill 3714 country 3714 of Judea 2453.

 1:66 All 3956 who heard 191 them kept 5087 them in mind 2588, saying 3004, “What 5101 then 686 will this 3778 child 3813 [turn out to] be?” For the hand 5495 of the Lord 2962 was certainly 2532 with him.

 1:67 ¶ And his father 3962 Zacharias 2197 was filled 4092a with the Holy 40 Spirit 4151, and prophesied 4395, saying 3004:

 1:68 “Blessed 2128 [be] the Lord 2962 God 2316 of Israel 2474, For He has visited 1980a us and accomplished 4160 redemption 3085 for His people 2992,

 1:69 And has raised 1453 up a horn 2768 of salvation 4991 for us In the house 3624 of David 1160b His servant 3816—

 1:70 As He spoke 2980 by the mouth 4750 of His holy 40 prophets 4396 from of old 165—

 1:71 Salvation 4991 FROM OUR ENEMIES 2190, And FROM THE HAND 5495 OF ALL 3956 WHO HATE 3404 US;

 1:72 To show 4160 mercy 1656 toward 3326 our fathers 3962, And to remember 3403 His holy 40 covenant 1242,

 1:73 The oath 3727 which 3739 He swore 3660 to Abraham 11 our father 3962,

 1:74 To grant 1325 us that we, being rescued 4506 from the hand 5495 of our enemies 2190, Might serve 3000 Him without 870 fear 870,

 1:75 In holiness 3742 and righteousness 1343 before 1799 Him all 3956 our days 2250.

 1:76 “And you, child 3813, will be called 2564 the prophet 4396 of the Most 5310 High 5310; For you will go 4313 on BEFORE 1799 THE LORD 2962 TO PREPARE 2090 HIS WAYS 3598;

 1:77 To give 1325 to His people 2992 [the] knowledge 1108 of salvation 4991 By the forgiveness 859 of their sins 266,

 1:78 Because 1223 of the tender 4698 mercy 1656 of our God 2316, With which 3739 the Sunrise 395 from on high 5311 will visit 1980a us,

 1:79 TO SHINE 2014 UPON THOSE 3588 WHO SIT 2521 IN DARKNESS 4655 AND THE SHADOW 4639 OF DEATH 2288, To guide 2720 our feet 4228 into the way 3598 of peace 1515.”

 1:80 ¶ And the child 3813 continued to grow 837 and to become 2901 strong 2901 in spirit 4151, and he lived 1510 in the deserts 2048 until 2193 the day 2250 of his public 323 appearance 323 to Israel 2474.
