Luke 20

1 Christ avoucheth his authority by a question of John's baptism. 9 The parable of the vineyard. 19 Of giving tribute to Cesar. 27 He convinceth the Sadducees that denied the resurrection. 41 How Christ is the son of David. 45 He warneth his disciples to beware of the scribes.

 20:1 On one 1520 of the days 2250 while He was teaching 1321 the people 2992 in the temple 2413 and preaching 2097 the gospel 2097, the chief 749 priests 749 and the scribes 1122 with the elders 4245 confronted 2186 [Him],

 20:2 and they spoke 3004, saying 3004 to Him, “Tell 3004 us by what 4169 authority 1849 You are doing 4160 these 3778 things 3778, or 2228 who 5101 is the one who gave 1325 You this 3778 authority 1849?”

 20:3 Jesus answered 611 and said 3004 to them, “I will also 2532 ask 2065 you a question 3056, and you tell 3004 Me:

 20:4 “Was the baptism 908 of John 2491 from heaven 3772 or 2228 from men 444?”

 20:5 They reasoned 4817 among 4314 themselves 1438, saying 3004, “If 1437 we say 3004, ‘From heaven 3772,’ He will say 3004, ‘Why 1223 5101 did you not believe 4100 him?’

 20:6 “But if 1437 we say 3004, ‘From men 444,’ all 537a the people 2992 will stone 2642 us to death 2642, for they are convinced 3982 that John 2491 was a prophet 4396.”

 20:7 So 2532 they answered 611 that they did not know 3609a where 4159 [it came] from.

 20:8 And Jesus 2424 said 3004 to them, “Nor 3761 will I tell 3004 you by what 4169 authority 1849 I do 4160 these 3778 things 3778.”

 20:9 ¶ And He began 757 to tell 3004 the people 2992 this 3778 parable 3850b: “A man 444 planted 5452 a vineyard 290 and rented 1554 it out to vine-growers 1092, and went 589 on a journey 589 for a long 2425 time 5550.

 20:10 “At the [harvest] time 2540 he sent 649 a slave 1401 to the vine-growers 1092, so 2443 that they would give 1325 him [some] of the produce 2590 of the vineyard 290; but the vine-growers 1092 beat 1194 him and sent 1821 him away 1821 empty-handed 2756.

 20:11 “And he proceeded 4369 to send 3992 another 2087 slave 1401; and they beat 1194 him also 2548 and treated 818 him shamefully 818 and sent 1821 him away 1821 empty-handed 2756.

 20:12 “And he proceeded 4369 to send 3992 a third 5154; and this 3778 one 3778 also 2532 they wounded 5135 and cast 1544b out.

 20:13 “The owner 2962 of the vineyard 290 said 3004, ‘What 5101 shall I do 4160? I will send 3992 my beloved 27 son 5207; perhaps 2481 they will respect 1788 him.’

 20:14 “But when the vine-growers 1092 saw 3708 him, they reasoned 1260 with one 240 another 240, saying 3004, ‘This 3778 is the heir 2818; let us kill 615 him so 2443 that the inheritance 2817 will be ours 1473.’

 20:15 “So 2532 they threw 1544b him out of the vineyard 290 and killed 615 him. What 5101, then 3767, will the owner 2962 of the vineyard 290 do 4160 to them?

 20:16 “He will come 2064 and destroy 622 these 3778 vine-growers 1092 and will give 1325 the vineyard 290 to others 243.” When 1161 they heard 191 it, they said 3004, “May it never 3361 be!”

 20:17 But Jesus looked 1689 at them and said 3004, “What 5101 then 3767 is this 3778 that is written 1125: ‘THE STONE 3037 WHICH 3739 THE BUILDERS 3618 REJECTED 593, THIS 3778 BECAME 1096 THE CHIEF 2776 CORNER 1137 [stone]’?

 20:18 “Everyone 3956 who falls 4098 on that stone 3037 will be broken 4917 to pieces 4917; but on whomever 3739 302 it falls 4098, it will scatter 3039 him like 3039 dust 3039.”

 20:19 ¶ The scribes 1122 and the chief 749 priests 749 tried 2212 to lay 1911 hands 5495 on Him that very 846 hour 5610, and they feared 5399 the people 2992; for they understood 1097 that He spoke 3004 this 3778 parable 3850b against 4314 them.

 20:20 So 5620 they watched 3906 Him, and sent 649 spies 1455 who pretended 5271 to be righteous 1342, in order 2443 that they might catch 1949 Him in some statement 3056, so 5620 that they [could] deliver 3860 Him to the rule 746 and the authority 1849 of the governor 2232.

 20:21 They questioned 1905 Him, saying 3004, “Teacher 1320, we know 3609a that You speak 3004 and teach 1321 correctly 3723, and You are not partial 2983 4383 to any, but teach 1321 the way 3598 of God 2316 in truth 225.

 20:22 “Is it lawful 1832 for us to pay 1325 taxes 5411 to Caesar 2541, or 2228 not?”

 20:23 But He detected 2657 their trickery 3834 and said 3004 to them,

 20:24 “Show 1166 Me a denarius 1220. Whose 5101 likeness 1504 and inscription 1923 does it have 2192?” They said 3004, “Caesar’s 2541.”

 20:25 And He said 3004 to them, “Then 5106 render 591 to Caesar 2541 the things that are Caesar’s 2541, and to God 2316 the things that are God’s 2316.”

 20:26 And they were unable 3756 2480 to catch 1949 Him in a saying 4487 in the presence 1727 of the people 2992; and being 2296 amazed 2296 at His answer 612, they became 4601 silent 4601.

 20:27 ¶ Now 1161 there came 4334 to Him some 5100 of the Sadducees 4523 (who say 483 that there is no 3361 resurrection 386),

 20:28 and they questioned 1905 Him, saying 3004, “Teacher 1320, Moses 3475 wrote 1125 for us that IF 1437 A MAN’S 5100 BROTHER 80 DIES 599, having 2192 a wife 1135, AND HE IS CHILDLESS 815, HIS BROTHER 80 SHOULD MARRY 2983 THE WIFE 1135 AND RAISE 1817 UP CHILDREN 4690 TO HIS BROTHER 80.

 20:29 “Now 3767 there were seven 2033 brothers 80; and the first 4413 took 2983 a wife 1135 and died 599 childless 815;

 20:30 and the second 1208

 20:31 and the third 5154 married 2983 her; and in the same 5615 way 5615 all 3588 seven 2033 died 599, leaving 2641 no 3756 children 5043.

 20:32 “Finally 5306 the woman 1135 died 599 also 2532.

 20:33 “In the resurrection 386 therefore 3767, which 5101 one’s 846 wife 1135 will she be? For all 3588 seven 2033 had 2192 married her.”

 20:34 ¶ Jesus 2424 said 3004 to them, “The sons 5207 of this 3778 age 165 marry 1060 and are given 1061b in marriage 1061b,

 20:35 but those 3588 who are considered 2661 worthy 2661 to attain 5177 to that age 165 and the resurrection 386 from the dead 3498, neither 3777 marry 1060 nor 3777 are given 1061a in marriage 1061a;

 20:36 for they cannot 1410 3761 even 3761 die 599 anymore 2089, because 1063 they are like 2465 angels 2465, and are sons 5207 of God 2316, being 1510 sons 5207 of the resurrection 386.

 20:37 “But that the dead 3498 are raised 1453, even 2532 Moses 3475 showed 3377, in the [passage about the burning] bush 942, where 5613 he calls 3004 the Lord 2962 THE GOD 2316 OF ABRAHAM 11, AND THE GOD 2316 OF ISAAC 2464, AND THE GOD 2316 OF JACOB 2384.

 20:38 “Now 1161 He is not the God 2316 of the dead 3498 but of the living 2198; for all 3956 live 2198 to Him.”

 20:39 Some 5100 of the scribes 1122 answered 611 and said 3004, “Teacher 1320, You have spoken 3004 well 2573.”

 20:40 For they did not have 5111 courage 5111 to question 1905 Him any 3765 longer 3765 about anything 3762.

 20:41 ¶ Then 2532 He said 3004 to them, “How 4459 [is it that] they say 3004 the Christ 5547 is David’s 1160b son 5207?

 20:42 “For David 1160b himself 846 says 3004 in the book 976 of Psalms 5568, ‘THE LORD 2962 SAID 3004 TO MY LORD 2962, “SIT 2521 AT MY RIGHT 1188 HAND 1188,

 20:43 UNTIL 2193 I MAKE 5087 YOUR ENEMIES 2190 A FOOTSTOOL 5286 FOR YOUR FEET 4228.”’

 20:44 “Therefore 3767 David 1160b calls 2564 Him ‘Lord 2962,’ and how 4459 is He his son 5207?”

 20:45 ¶ And while all 3956 the people 2992 were listening 191, He said 3004 to the disciples 3101,

 20:46 “Beware 4337 of the scribes 1122, who like 2309 to walk 4043 around 4043 in long 4749 robes 4749, and love 5368 respectful greetings 783 in the market 58 places 58, and chief 4410 seats 4410 in the synagogues 4864 and places 4411 of honor 4411 at banquets 1173,

 20:47 who 3739 devour 2719 widows’ 5503 houses 3614, and for appearance’s 4392 sake 4392 offer 4336 long 3117 prayers 4336. These 3778 will receive 2983 greater 4053 condemnation 2917.”
