1995 New American Standard Bible (NASB)Luke 142 Christ healeth the dropsy on the Sabbath: 7 teacheth humility: 12 to feast the poor: 16 under the parable of the great supper, sheweth how worldly minded men, who contemn the Word of God, shall be shut out of heaven. 25 Those who will be his disciples, to bear their cross must make their accounts aforehand, lest with shame they revolt from him afterward, 34 and become altogether unprofitable, like salt that hath lost his savour. 14:1 It happened 1096 that when 1722 He went 2064 into the house 3624 of one 5100 of the leaders 758 of the Pharisees 5330 on [the] Sabbath 4521 to eat 2068 bread 740, they were watching 3906 Him closely 3906. 14:2 And there 2400 in front 1715 of Him was a man 444 suffering 5203 from dropsy 5203. 14:3 And Jesus 2424 answered 611 and spoke 3004 to the lawyers 3544 and Pharisees 5330, saying 3004, “Is it lawful 1832 to heal 2323 on the Sabbath 4521, or 2228 not?” 14:4 But they kept 2270 silent 2270. And He took 1949 hold 1949 of him and healed 2390 him, and sent 630 him away 630. 14:5 And He said 3004 to them, “Which 5101 one of you will have a son 5207 or 2228 an ox 1016 fall 4098 into a well 5421, and will not immediately 2112 pull 385 him out on a Sabbath 4521 day 2250?” 14:6 And they could 2480 make 470 no 3756 reply 470 to this 3778. 14:7 ¶ And He [began] speaking 3004 a parable 3850b to the invited 2564 guests 2564 when He noticed 1907 how 4459 they had been picking 1586 out the places 4411 of honor 4411 [at the table], saying 3004 to them, 14:8 “When 3752 you are invited 2564 by someone 5100 to a wedding 1062 feast 1062, do not take 2625 the place 4411 of honor 4411, for someone more 1784 distinguished 1784 than you may have been 1510 invited 2564 by him, 14:9 and he who invited 2564 you both 2532 846 will come 2064 and say 3004 to you, ‘Give 1325 [your] place 5117 to this 3778 man 3778,’ and then 5119 in disgrace 152 you proceed 757 to occupy 2722 the last 2078 place 5117. 14:10 “But when 3752 you are invited 2564, go 4198 and recline 377 at the last 2078 place 5117, so 2443 that when 3752 the one who has invited 2564 you comes 2064, he may say 3004 to you, ‘Friend 5384, move 4320 up higher 511’; then 5119 you will have honor 1391 in the sight 1799 of all 3956 who are at the table 4873 with you. 14:11 “For everyone 3956 who exalts 5312 himself 1438 will be humbled 5013, and he who humbles 5013 himself 1438 will be exalted 5312.” 14:12 ¶ And He also 2532 went on to say 3004 to the one who had invited 2564 Him, “When 3752 you give 4160 a luncheon 712 or 2228 a dinner 1173, do not invite 5455 your friends 5384 or 3366 your brothers 80 or 3366 your relatives 4773a or 3366 rich 4145 neighbors 1069, otherwise 3379 they may also 2532 invite 479 you in return 479 and [that] will be your repayment 468. 14:13 “But when 3752 you give 4160 a reception 1403, invite 2564 [the] poor 4434, [the] crippled 376b, [the] lame 5560, [the] blind 5185, 14:14 and you will be blessed 3107, since 3754 they do not have 2192 [the means] to repay 467 you; for you will be repaid 467 at the resurrection 386 of the righteous 1342.” 14:15 ¶ When one 5100 of those 3588 who were reclining 4873 [at the table] with Him heard 191 this 3778, he said 3004 to Him, “Blessed 3107 is everyone 3748 who 3748 will eat 2068 bread 740 in the kingdom 932 of God 2316!” 14:16 But He said 3004 to him, “A man 444 was giving 4160 a big 3173 dinner 1173, and he invited 2564 many 4183; 14:17 and at the dinner 1173 hour 5610 he sent 649 his slave 1401 to say 3004 to those 3588 who had been invited 2564, ‘Come 2064; for everything is ready 2092 now 2235.’ 14:18 “But they all 3956 alike 575 1520 began 757 to make 3868 excuses 3868. The first 4413 one 4413 said 3004 to him, ‘I have bought 59 a piece 68 of land 68 and I need 318 to go 1831 out and look 3708 at it; please 2065 consider 2192 me excused 3868.’ 14:19 “Another 2087 one 2087 said 3004, ‘I have bought 59 five 4002 yoke 2201 of oxen 1016, and I am going 4198 to try 1381a them out; please 2065 consider 2192 me excused 3868.’ 14:20 “Another 2087 one 2087 said 3004, ‘I have married 1060 a wife 1135, and for that reason 1223 I cannot 1410 3756 come 2064.’ 14:21 “And the slave 1401 came 3854 [back] and reported 518 this 3778 to his master 2962. Then 5119 the head 3617 of the household 3617 became angry 3710 and said 3004 to his slave 1401, ‘Go 1831 out at once 5030 into the streets 4116 and lanes 4505 of the city 4172 and bring 1521 in here 5602 the poor 4434 and crippled 376b and blind 5185 and lame 5560.’ 14:22 “And the slave 1401 said 3004, ‘Master 2962, what 3739 you commanded 2004 has been 1096 done 1096, and still 2089 there is room 5117.’ 14:23 “And the master 2962 said 3004 to the slave 1401, ‘Go 1831 out into the highways 3598 and along the hedges 5418, and compel 315 [them] to come 1525 in, so 2443 that my house 3624 may be filled 1072. 14:24 ‘For I tell 3004 you, none 3762 of those 1565 men 435 who were invited 2564 shall taste 1089 of my dinner 1173.’” 14:25 ¶ Now 1161 large 4183 crowds 3793 were going 4848 along 4848 with Him; and He turned 4762 and said 3004 to them, 14:26 “If 1487 anyone 5100 comes 2064 to Me, and does not hate 3404 his own father 3962 and mother 3384 and wife 1135 and children 5043 and brothers 80 and sisters 79, yes 2089, and even 2532 his own 1438 life 5590, he cannot 1410 3756 be My disciple 3101. 14:27 “Whoever 3748 does not carry 941 his own 1438 cross 4716 and come 2064 after 3694 Me cannot 1410 3756 be My disciple 3101. 14:28 “For which 5101 one of you, when he wants 2309 to build 3618 a tower 4444, does not first 4413 sit 2523 down 2523 and calculate 5585 the cost 1160a to see if 1487 he has 2192 enough to complete 535 it? 14:29 “Otherwise 2443 3361, when 4218 he has laid 5087 a foundation 2310b and is not able 2480 to finish 1615, all 3956 who observe 2334 it begin 757 to ridicule 1702 him, 14:30 saying 3004, ‘This 3778 man 444 began 757 to build 3618 and was not able 2480 to finish 1615.’ 14:31 “Or 2228 what 5101 king 935, when he sets 4198 out to meet 4820 another 2087 king 935 in battle 4171, will not first 4413 sit 2523 down 2523 and consider 1011 whether 1487 he is strong 1415 enough 1415 with ten 1176 thousand 5505 [men] to encounter 5221 the one coming 2064 against 1909 him with twenty 1501 thousand 5505? 14:32 “Or 1161 else 1490b, while the other 846 is still 2089 far 4206 away 4206, he sends 649 a delegation 4242 and asks 2065 for terms 4314 of peace 1515. 14:33 “So 3779 then 3767, none 3956 3756 of you can 1410 be My disciple 3101 who 3739 does not give 657 up all 3956 his own 1438 possessions 5225. 14:34 ¶ “Therefore 3767, salt 217 is good 2570; but if 1437 even 2532 salt 217 has become 3471 tasteless 3471, with what 5101 will it be seasoned 741? 14:35 “It is useless 3777 2111 either 3777 for the soil 1093 or 3777 for the manure 2874a pile 2874a; it is thrown 906 out. He who has 2192 ears 3775 to hear 191, let him hear 191.” |
