1 Kings 1

1 Abishag cherisheth David in his extreme age. 5 Adonijah, David's darling, usurpeth the kingdom. 11 By the counsel of Nathan, 15 Bath-sheba moveth the king, 22 and Nathan secondeth her. 28 David reneweth his oath to Bath-sheba. 32 Solomon, by David's appointment, being anointed king by Zadok and Nathan, the people triumph. 41 Jonathan bringing these news, Adonijah's guests flee. 50 Adonijah, fleeing to the horns of the altar, upon his good behaviour is dismissed by Solomon.

 1:1 Now King 4428 David 1732 was old 2204, advanced 935 in age 3117; and they covered 3680 him with clothes 899b, but he could not keep 2552 warm 2552.

 1:2 So his servants 5650 said 559 to him, “Let them seek 1245 a young 5291 virgin 1330 for my lord 113 the king 4428, and let her attend 5975 6440 the king 4428 and become 1961 his nurse 5532a; and let her lie 7901 in your bosom 2436, that my lord 113 the king 4428 may keep 2552 warm 2552.”

 1:3 So they searched 1245 for a beautiful 3303 girl 5291 throughout all 3605 the territory 1366 of Israel 3478, and found 4672 Abishag 49 the Shunammite 7767, and brought 935 her to the king 4428.

 1:4 The girl 5291 was very 3966 beautiful 3303; and she became 1961 the king’s 4428 nurse 5532a and served 8334 him, but the king 4428 did not cohabit 3045 with her.

 1:5 ¶ Now Adonijah 138 the son 1121 of Haggith 2294 exalted 5375 himself, saying 559, “I will be king 4427a.” So he prepared 6213a for himself chariots 7393 and horsemen 6571b with fifty 2572 men 376 to run 7323 before 6440 him.

 1:6 His father 1 had never 3808 crossed 6087a him at any 4480 time 3117 by asking 559, “Why 4069 have you done 6213a so 3602?” And he was also 1571 a very 3966 handsome 2896a 8389 man 2896a, and he was born 3205 after 310 Absalom 53.

 1:7 He had conferred 1697 with Joab 3097 the son 1121 of Zeruiah 6870 and with Abiathar 54 the priest 3548; and following 310 Adonijah 138 they helped 5826 him.

 1:8 But Zadok 6659 the priest 3548, Benaiah 1141 the son 1121 of Jehoiada 3077, Nathan 5416 the prophet 5030, Shimei 8096, Rei 7472, and the mighty 1368 men 1368 who 834 belonged to David 1732, were not with Adonijah 138.

 1:9 ¶ Adonijah 138 sacrificed 2076 sheep 6629 and oxen 1241 and fatlings 4806 by the stone 68 of Zoheleth 2120, which 834 is beside 681a En-rogel 5883; and he invited 7121 all 3605 his brothers 251, the king’s 4428 sons 1121, and all 3605 the men 376 of Judah 3063, the king’s 4428 servants 5650.

 1:10 But he did not invite 7121 Nathan 5416 the prophet 5030, Benaiah 1141, the mighty 1368 men 1368, and Solomon 8010 his brother 251.

 1:11 ¶ Then Nathan 5416 spoke 559 to Bathsheba 1339 the mother 517 of Solomon 8010, saying 559, “Have you not heard 8085 that Adonijah 138 the son 1121 of Haggith 2294 has become 4427a king 4427a, and David 1732 our lord 113 does not know 3045 [it]?

 1:12 “So now 6258 come 1980, please 4994 let me give 3289 you counsel 6098 and save 4422 your life 5315 and the life 5315 of your son 1121 Solomon 8010.

 1:13 “Go 1980 at once 935 to King 4428 David 1732 and say 559 to him, ‘Have you not, my lord 113, O king 4428, sworn 7650 to your maidservant 519, saying 559, “Surely 3588 Solomon 8010 your son 1121 shall be king 4427a after 310 me, and he shall sit 3427 on my throne 3678”? Why 4069 then has Adonijah 138 become 4427a king 4427a?’

 1:14 “Behold 2009, while you are still 5750 there 8033 speaking 1696 with the king 4428, I will come 935 in after 310 you and confirm 4390 your words 1697.”

 1:15 ¶ So Bathsheba 1339 went 935 in to the king 4428 in the bedroom 2315. Now the king 4428 was very 3966 old 2204, and Abishag 49 the Shunammite 7767 was ministering 8334 to the king 4428.

 1:16 Then Bathsheba 1339 bowed 6915 and prostrated 7812 herself before the king 4428. And the king 4428 said 559, “What 4100 do you wish?”

 1:17 She said 559 to him, “My lord 113, you swore 7650 to your maidservant 519 by the LORD 3068 your God 430, [saying], ‘Surely 3588 your son 1121 Solomon 8010 shall be king 4427a after 310 me and he shall sit 3427 on my throne 3678.’

 1:18 “Now 6258, behold 2009, Adonijah 138 is king 4427a; and now 6258, my lord 113 the king 4428, you do not know 3045 [it].

 1:19 “He has sacrificed 2076 oxen 7794 and fatlings 4806 and sheep 6629 in abundance 7230, and has invited 7121 all 3605 the sons 1121 of the king 4428 and Abiathar 54 the priest 3548 and Joab 3097 the commander 8269 of the army 6635, but he has not invited 7121 Solomon 8010 your servant 5650.

 1:20 “As for you now, my lord 113 the king 4428, the eyes 5869 of all 3605 Israel 3478 are on you, to tell 5046 them who 4310 shall sit 3427 on the throne 3678 of my lord 113 the king 4428 after 310 him.

 1:21 “Otherwise it will come 1961 about, as soon as my lord 113 the king 4428 sleeps 7901 with his fathers 1, that I and my son 1121 Solomon 8010 will be considered offenders 2400.”

 1:22 ¶ Behold 2009, while she was still 5750 speaking 1696 with the king 4428, Nathan 5416 the prophet 5030 came 935 in.

 1:23 They told 5046 the king 4428, saying 559, “Here 2009 is Nathan 5416 the prophet 5030.” And when he came 935 in before 6440 the king 4428, he prostrated 7812 himself before the king 4428 with his face 639 to the ground 776.

 1:24 Then Nathan 5416 said 559, “My lord 113 the king 4428, have you said 559, ‘Adonijah 138 shall be king 4427a after 310 me, and he shall sit 3427 on my throne 3678’?

 1:25 “For he has gone 3381 down 3381 today 3117 and has sacrificed 2076 oxen 7794 and fatlings 4806 and sheep 6629 in abundance 7230, and has invited 7121 all 3605 the king’s 4428 sons 1121 and the commanders 8269 of the army 6635 and Abiathar 54 the priest 3548, and behold 2009, they are eating 398 and drinking 8354 before 6440 him; and they say 559, ‘[Long] live 2421a King 4428 Adonijah 138!’

 1:26 “But me, [even] me your servant 5650, and Zadok 6659 the priest 3548 and Benaiah 1141 the son 1121 of Jehoiada 3077 and your servant 5650 Solomon 8010, he has not invited 7121.

 1:27 “Has this 2088 thing 1697 been 1961 done 1961 by my lord 113 the king 4428, and you have not shown 3045 to your servants 5650 who 4310 should sit 3427 on the throne 3678 of my lord 113 the king 4428 after 310 him?”

 1:28 ¶ Then King 4428 David 1732 said 559, “Call 7121 Bathsheba 1339 to me.” And she came 935 into the king’s 4428 presence 6440 and stood 5975 before 6440 the king 4428.

 1:29 The king 4428 vowed 7650 and said 559, “As the LORD 3068 lives 2416a, who 834 has redeemed 6299 my life 5315 from all 3605 distress 6869a,

 1:30 surely 3588 as I vowed 7650 to you by the LORD 3068 the God 430 of Israel 3478, saying 559, ‘Your son 1121 Solomon 8010 shall be king 4427a after 310 me, and he shall sit 3427 on my throne 3678 in my place 8478’; I will indeed 3588 do 6213a so 3651 this 2088 day 3117.”

 1:31 Then Bathsheba 1339 bowed 6915 with her face 639 to the ground 776, and prostrated 7812 herself before the king 4428 and said 559, “May my lord 113 King 4428 David 1732 live 2421a forever 5769.”

 1:32 ¶ Then King 4428 David 1732 said 559, “Call 7121 to me Zadok 6659 the priest 3548, Nathan 5416 the prophet 5030, and Benaiah 1141 the son 1121 of Jehoiada 3077.” And they came 935 into the king’s 4428 presence 6440.

 1:33 The king 4428 said 559 to them, “Take 3947 with you the servants 5650 of your lord 113, and have my son 1121 Solomon 8010 ride 7392 on my own mule 6506, and bring 3381 him down 3381 to Gihon 1521.

 1:34 “Let Zadok 6659 the priest 3548 and Nathan 5416 the prophet 5030 anoint 4886 him there 8033 as king 4428 over 5921 Israel 3478, and blow 8628 the trumpet 7782 and say 559, ‘[Long] live 2421a King 4428 Solomon 8010!’

 1:35 “Then you shall come 5927 up after 310 him, and he shall come 935 and sit 3427 on my throne 3678 and be king 4427a in my place 8478; for I have appointed 6680 him to be ruler 5057 over 5921 Israel 3478 and Judah 3063.”

 1:36 Benaiah 1141 the son 1121 of Jehoiada 3077 answered 6030a the king 4428 and said 559, “Amen 543! Thus 3651 may the LORD 3068, the God 430 of my lord 113 the king 4428, say 559.

 1:37 “As the LORD 3068 has been 1961 with my lord 113 the king 4428, so 3651 may He be with Solomon 8010, and make 1431 his throne 3678 greater 1431 than 4480 the throne 3678 of my lord 113 King 4428 David 1732!”

 1:38 ¶ So Zadok 6659 the priest 3548, Nathan 5416 the prophet 5030, Benaiah 1141 the son 1121 of Jehoiada 3077, the Cherethites 3774, and the Pelethites 6432 went 3381 down 3381 and had Solomon 8010 ride 7392 on King 4428 David’s 1732 mule 6506, and brought 1980 him to Gihon 1521.

 1:39 Zadok 6659 the priest 3548 then took 3947 the horn 7161 of oil 8081 from the tent 168 and anointed 4886 Solomon 8010. Then they blew 8628 the trumpet 7782, and all 3605 the people 5971a said 559, “[Long] live 2421a King 4428 Solomon 8010!”

 1:40 All 3605 the people 5971a went 5927 up after 310 him, and the people 5971a were playing 2490b on flutes 2485 and rejoicing 8056 with great 1419 joy 8057, so that the earth 776 shook 1234 at their noise 6963.

 1:41 ¶ Now Adonijah 138 and all 3605 the guests 7121 who 834 [were] with him heard 8085 [it] as they finished 3615 eating 398. When Joab 3097 heard 8085 the sound 6963 of the trumpet 7782, he said 559, “Why 4069 is the city 7151 making 1993 such an uproar 1993?”

 1:42 While he was still 5750 speaking 1696, behold 2009, Jonathan 3083 the son 1121 of Abiathar 54 the priest 3548 came 935. Then Adonijah 138 said 559, “Come 935 in, for you are a valiant 2428 man 376 and bring 1319 good 2896b news 1319.”

 1:43 But Jonathan 3083 replied 6030a to Adonijah 138, “No 61! Our lord 113 King 4428 David 1732 has made 4427a Solomon 8010 king 4428.

 1:44 “The king 4428 has also sent 7971 with him Zadok 6659 the priest 3548, Nathan 5416 the prophet 5030, Benaiah 1141 the son 1121 of Jehoiada 3077, the Cherethites 3774, and the Pelethites 6432; and they have made him ride 7392 on the king’s 4428 mule 6506.

 1:45 “Zadok 6659 the priest 3548 and Nathan 5416 the prophet 5030 have anointed 4886 him king 4428 in Gihon 1521, and they have come 5927 up from there 8033 rejoicing 8056, so that the city 7151 is in an uproar 1949. This 1931 is the noise 6963 which 834 you have heard 8085.

 1:46 “Besides 1571, Solomon 8010 has even 1571 taken 3427 his seat 3427 on the throne 3678 of the kingdom 4410.

 1:47 “Moreover 1571, the king’s 4428 servants 5650 came 935 to bless 1288 our lord 113 King 4428 David 1732, saying 559, ‘May your God 430 make 3190 the name 8034 of Solomon 8010 better 3190 than 4480 your name 8034 and his throne 3678 greater 1431 than 4480 your throne 3678!’ And the king 4428 bowed 7812 himself on the bed 4904.

 1:48 “The king 4428 has also 1571 said 559 thus 3602, ‘Blessed 1288 be the LORD 3068, the God 430 of Israel 3478, who 834 has granted 5414 one to sit 3427 on my throne 3678 today 3117 while my own eyes 5869 see 7200 [it].’”

 1:49 ¶ Then all 3605 the guests 7121 of Adonijah 138 were terrified 2729; and they arose 6965 and each 376 went 1980 on his way 1870.

 1:50 And Adonijah 138 was afraid 3372a of Solomon 8010, and he arose 6965, went 1980 and took 2388 hold 2388 of the horns 7161 of the altar 4196.

 1:51 Now it was told 5046 Solomon 8010, saying 559, “Behold 2009, Adonijah 138 is afraid 3372a of King 4428 Solomon 8010, for behold 2009, he has taken 270 hold 270 of the horns 7161 of the altar 4196, saying 559, ‘Let King 4428 Solomon 8010 swear 7650 to me today 3117 that he will not put 4191 his servant 5650 to death 4191 with the sword 2719.’”

 1:52 Solomon 8010 said 559, “If 518 he is a worthy 2428 man 1121, not one of his hairs 8185 will fall 5307 to the ground 776; but if 518 wickedness 7463a is found 4672 in him, he will die 4191.”

 1:53 So King 4428 Solomon 8010 sent 7971, and they brought 3381 him down 3381 from the altar 4196. And he came 935 and prostrated 7812 himself before King 4428 Solomon 8010, and Solomon 8010 said 559 to him, “Go 1980 to your house 1004.”
