1995 New American Standard Bible (NASB)Acts 171 Paul preacheth at Thessalonica, 4 where some believe, and others persecute him. 10 He is sent to Berea, and preacheth there. 13 Being persecuted at Thessalonica, 15 he cometh to Athens, and disputeth, and preacheth the living God to them unknown, 34 whereby many are converted unto Christ. 17:1 Now 1161 when they had traveled 1353 through 1353 Amphipolis 295 and Apollonia 624, they came 2064 to Thessalonica 2332, where 3699 there was a synagogue 4864 of the Jews 2453. 17:2 And according 2596 to Paul’s 3972 custom 1486, he went 1525 to them, and for three 5140 Sabbaths 4521 reasoned 1256 with them from the Scriptures 1124, 17:3 explaining 1272 and giving 3908 evidence 3908 that the Christ 5547 had 1163 to suffer 3958 and rise 450 again 450 from the dead 3498, and [saying], “This 3778 Jesus 2424 whom 3739 I am proclaiming 2605 to you is the Christ 5547.” 17:4 And some 5100 of them were persuaded 3982 and joined 4345 Paul 3972 and Silas 4609, along 5037 with a large 4183 number 3756 of the God-fearing 4576 Greeks 1672 and a number 3756 3641 of the leading 4413 women 1135. 17:5 But the Jews 2453, becoming 2206 jealous 2206 and taking 4355 along 4355 some 5100 wicked 4190 men 435 from the market 60 place 60, formed 3792 a mob 3792 and set 2350b the city 4172 in an uproar 2350b; and attacking 2186 the house 3614 of Jason 2394, they were seeking 2212 to bring 4254 them out to the people 1218. 17:6 When they did not find 2147 them, they [began] dragging 4951 Jason 2394 and some 5100 brethren 80 before 1909 the city 4173 authorities 4173, shouting 994, “These 3778 men 3778 who have upset 387 the world 3625 have come 3918b here 1759a also 2532; 17:7 and Jason 2394 has welcomed 5264 them, and they all 3956 act 4238 contrary 561 to the decrees 1378 of Caesar 2541, saying 3004 that there is another 2087 king 935, Jesus 2424.” 17:8 They stirred 5015 up the crowd 3793 and the city 4173 authorities 4173 who heard 191 these 3778 things 3778. 17:9 And when they had received 2983 a pledge 2425 from Jason 2394 and the others 3062, they released 630 them. 17:10 ¶ The brethren 80 immediately 2112 sent 1599 Paul 3972 and Silas 4609 away 1599 by night 3571 to Berea 960, and when they arrived 3854, they went 549 into the synagogue 4864 of the Jews 2453. 17:11 Now 1161 these 3778 were more 2104b noble-minded 2104b than those 3588 in Thessalonica 2332, for they received 1209 the word 3056 with great 3956 eagerness 4288, examining 350 the Scriptures 1124 daily 2596 2250 [to see] whether 1487 these 3778 things 3778 were so 3779. 17:12 Therefore 3767 many 4183 of them believed 4100, along 2532 with a number 3756 3641 of prominent 2158 Greek 1674 women 1135 and men 435. 17:13 But when 5613 the Jews 2453 of Thessalonica 2332 found 1097 out that the word 3056 of God 2316 had been proclaimed 2605 by Paul 3972 in Berea 960 also 2532, they came 2064 there 2546 as well 2546, agitating 4531 and stirring 5015 up the crowds 3793. 17:14 Then 5119 immediately 2112 the brethren 80 sent 1821 Paul 3972 out to go 4198 as far 2193 as the sea 2281; and Silas 4609 and Timothy 5095 remained 5278 there 1563. 17:15 Now 1161 those 3588 who escorted 2525 Paul 3972 brought 71 him as far 2193 as Athens 116; and receiving 2983 a command 1785 for Silas 4609 and Timothy 5095 to come 2064 to him as soon 5036 as possible 5035, they left 1826. 17:16 ¶ Now 1161 while Paul 3972 was waiting 1551 for them at Athens 116, his spirit 4151 was being provoked 3947 within 1722 him as he was observing 2334 the city 4172 full 2712 of idols 2712. 17:17 So 3767 he was reasoning 1256 in the synagogue 4864 with the Jews 2453 and the God-fearing 4576 [Gentiles], and in the market 58 place 58 every 3956 day 2250 with those 3588 who happened 3909 to be present 3909. 17:18 And also 2532 some 5100 of the Epicurean 1946b and Stoic 4770 philosophers 5386 were conversing 4820 with him. Some 5100 were saying 3004, “What 5101 would this 3778 idle 4691 babbler 4691 wish 2309 to say 3004?” Others 3588 1161, “He seems 1380 to be a proclaimer 2604 of strange 3581 deities 1140,”because 3754 he was preaching 2097 Jesus 2424 and the resurrection 386. 17:19 And they took 1949 him and brought 71 him to the Areopagus 697, saying 3004, “May 1410 we know 1097 what 5101 this 3778 new 2537 teaching 1322 is which you are proclaiming 2980? 17:20 “For you are bringing 1533 some 5100 strange 3579 things 3579 to our ears 189; so 3767 we want 1014 to know 1097 what 5101 these 3778 things 3778 mean 2309 1510.” 17:21 (Now 1161 all 3956 the Athenians 117 and the strangers 3581 visiting 1927 there used to spend 2119 their time 2119 in nothing 3762 other 2087 than 2228 telling 3004 or 2228 hearing 191 something 5100 new 2537.) 17:22 ¶ So 1161 Paul 3972 stood 2476 in the midst 3319 of the Areopagus 697 and said 5346, “Men 435 of Athens 117, I observe 2334 that you are very 1175 religious 1175 in all 3956 respects 3956. 17:23 “For while I was passing 1330 through 1330 and examining 333 the objects 4574 of your worship 4574, I also 2532 found 2147 an altar 1041 with this 3739 inscription 1924, ‘TO AN UNKNOWN 57 GOD 2316.’ Therefore 3767 what 3739 you worship 2151 in ignorance 50, this 3778 I proclaim 2605 to you. 17:24 “The God 2316 who made 4160 the world 2889 and all 3956 things 3956 in it, since He is Lord 2962 of heaven 3772 and earth 1093, does not dwell 2730 in temples 3485 made 5499 with hands 5499; 17:25 nor 3761 is He served 2323 by human 442 hands 5495, as though He needed 4326 anything 5100, since He Himself 846 gives 1325 to all 3956 [people] life 2222 and breath 4157 and all 3956 things 3956; 17:26 and He made 4160 from one 1520 [man] every 3956 nation 1484 of mankind 444 to live 2730 on all 3956 the face 4383 of the earth 1093, having determined 3724 [their] appointed 4367 times 2540 and the boundaries 3734 of their habitation 2733a, 17:27 that they would seek 2212 God 2316, if 1487 perhaps 686 they might grope 5584 for Him and find 2147 Him, though 2532 1065 He is not far 3112 from each 1538 one 1520 of us; 17:28 for in Him we live 2198 and move 2795 and exist 1510, as even 2532 some 5100 of your own poets 4163 have said 3004, ‘For we also 2532 are His children 2085.’ 17:29 “Being 5225 then 3767 the children 2085 of God 2316, we ought 3784 not to think 3543 that the Divine 2304 Nature 2304 is like 3664 gold 5557 or 2228 silver 696 or 2228 stone 3037, an image 5480 formed 5480 by the art 5078 and thought 1761 of man 444. 17:30 “Therefore 3767 having overlooked 5237 the times 5550 of ignorance 52, God 2316 is now 3568 declaring 518 to men 444 that all 3956 [people] everywhere 3837 should repent 3340, 17:31 because 2530 He has fixed 2476 a day 2250 in which 3739 He will 3195 judge 2919 the world 3625 in righteousness 1343 through 1722 a Man 435 whom 3739 He has appointed 3724, having furnished 3930 proof 4102 to all 3956 men 3956 by raising 450 Him from the dead 3498.” 17:32 ¶ Now 1161 when they heard 191 of the resurrection 386 of the dead 3498, some 3588 3303a [began] to sneer 5512, but others 3588 said 3004, “We shall hear 191 you again 2532 3825 concerning 4012 this 3778.” 17:33 So 3779 Paul 3972 went 1831 out of their midst 3319. 17:34 But some 5100 men 435 joined 2853 him and believed 4100, among 1722 whom 3739 also 2532 were Dionysius 1354 the Areopagite 698 and a woman 1135 named 3686 Damaris 1152 and others 2087 with them. |
