 25:1 ¶
Amaziah{gr.Amasias} began to reign when he was twenty and five years old, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem; and his mother's name [was] Joadaen of Jerusalem. |
|
 25:1 ¶
Amaziahº
[was] twentyº
and fiveº
yearsº
oldº
[when] he began to reign,ºº
and he reignedºº
twentyº
and nineº
yearsº
in Jerusalem.º
And his mother'sº
nameº
[was] Jehoaddanº
of Jerusalem.ºº |
 25:2
And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, but not with a perfect heart. |
 25:2
And he didºº
[that which was] rightº
in the sightº
of Yahweh,º
butº
notº
with a perfectº
heart.º |
 25:3 ¶
And it came to pass, when the kingdom was established in his hand, that he slew his servants who had slain the king his father. |
 25:3 ¶
Now it came to pass,º
whenº
the kingdomº
was establishedºº
toº
him, that he slewººº
his servantsº
that had killedººº
the kingº
his father.º |
 25:4
But he slew not their sons, according to the covenant of the law of the Lord, as it is written, [and] as the Lord commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, and the sons shall not die for the fathers, but they shall die each for his own sin. |
 25:4
But he slewºº
notº
their children,º
butº
[did] as [it is] writtenºº
in the lawº
in the bookº
of Moses,º
whereº
Yahwehº
commanded,ºº
saying,ºº
The fathersº
shall notº
dieºº
forº
the children,º
neitherº
shall the childrenº
dieºº
forº
the fathers,º
butº
every manº
shall dieºº
for his own sin.º |
 25:5 ¶
And Amaziah{gr.Amasias} assembled the house of Judah{gr.Juda}, and appointed them according to the houses of their families for captains of thousands and captains of hundreds in all Judah{gr.Juda} and Jerusalem: and he numbered them from twenty years old and upwards, and found them three hundred thousand able to go out to war, holding spear and shield. |
 25:5 ¶
Moreover Amaziahº
gatheredºº
Judahº
together,ºººº
and madeºº
them captainsº
over thousands,º
and captainsº
over hundreds,º
according to the housesº
of [their] fathers,º
throughout allº
Judahº
and Benjamin:º
and he numberedºº
them from twentyº
yearsº
oldºº
and above,º
and foundºº
them threeº
hundredº
thousandº
choiceºº
[men, able] to go forthºº
to war,º
that could handleºº
spearº
and shield.º |
 25:6
Also he hired of Israel a hundred thousand mighty [men for] a hundred talents of silver. |
 25:6
He hiredºº
also an hundredº
thousandº
mightyº
menº
of valourº
out of Israelºº
for an hundredº
talentsº
of silver.º |
 25:7
And there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the host of Israel go with thee; for the Lord is not with Israel, [even] all the sons of Ephraim. |
 25:7
But there cameºº
a manº
of Elohimº
toº
him, saying,ºº
O king,º
let notº
the armyº
of Israelº
goºº
withº
thee; forº
Yahwehº
[is] notº
withº
Israel,º
[to wit, with] allº
the childrenº
of Ephraim.º |
 25:8
For if thou shalt undertake to strengthen [thyself] with these, then the lord shall put thee to flight before the enemies: for it is of the Lord both to strengthen and to put to flight. |
 25:8
Butº
ifº
thouº
wilt go,ºº
doºº
[it], be strongºº
for the battle:º
Elohimº
shall make thee fallºº
beforeº
the enemy:ºº
forº
Elohimº
hathº
powerº
to help,ºº
and to cast down.ºº |
 25:9
And Amaziah{gr.Amasias} said to the man of God, But what shall I do [for] the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God said, The Lord can give thee much more than these. |
 25:9
And Amaziahº
saidºº
to the manº
of Elohim,º
But whatº
shall we doºº
for the hundredº
talentsº
whichº
I have givenºº
to the armyº
of Israel?º
And the manº
of Elohimº
answered,ºº
Yahwehº
isº
able to giveºº
thee much moreºº
than this.ºº |
 25:10
And Amaziah{gr.Amasias} separated from the army that came to him from Ephraim, that they might go away to their place; and they were very angry with Judah{gr.Juda}, and they returned to their place with great wrath. |
 25:10
Then Amaziahº
separatedºº
them, [to wit], the armyº
thatº
was comeºº
toº
him out of Ephraim,ºº
to goººº
homeº
again:ºº
wherefore their angerº
was greatlyº
kindledºº
against Judah,º
and they returnedºº
homeº
in greatº
anger.º |
 25:11 ¶
And Amaziah{gr.Amasias} strengthened [himself], and took his people, and went to the valley of salt, and smote there the children of Seir ten thousand. |
 25:11 ¶
And Amaziahº
strengthenedºº
himself,º
and led forthººº
his people,º
and wentººº
to the valleyº
of salt,º
and smoteººº
of the childrenº
of Seirº
tenº
thousand.º |
 25:12
And the children of Judah{gr.Juda} took ten thousand prisoners, and they carried them to the top of the precipice, and cast them headlong from the top of the precipice, and they were all dashed to pieces. |
 25:12
And [other] tenº
thousandº
[left] aliveº
did the childrenº
of Judahº
carry away captive,ºº
and broughtºº
them unto the topº
of the rock,º
and cast them downºº
from the topºº
of the rock,º
that they allº
were broken in pieces.ºº |
 25:13 ¶
And the men of the host whom Amaziah{gr.Amasias} sent back so that they should not go with him to battle, [went] and attacked the cities of Judah{gr.Juda}, from Samaria to Bethhoron{gr.Baethoron}; and they smote three thousand among them, and took much spoil. |
 25:13 ¶
But the soldiersº
of the armyº
whichº
Amaziahº
sent back,ºº
that they should not goºººº
withº
him to battle,º
fellºº
uponº
the citiesº
of Judah,º
from Samariaºº
even untoº
Bethhoron,º
and smoteºº
threeº
thousandº
ofº
them, and tookºº
muchº
spoil.º |
 25:14 ¶
And it came to pass, after Amaziah{gr.Amasias} had returned from smiting Edom{gr.Idumea}, that he brought home the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up for himself as gods, and bowed down before them, and he sacrificed to them. |
 25:14 ¶
Now it came to pass,º
afterº
thatº
Amaziahº
was comeºº
from the slaughterºººº
of the Edomites,º
that he broughtººº
the elohimº
of the childrenº
of Seir,º
and set them upºº
[to be] his elohim,º
and bowed downºº
himselfº
beforeº
them, and burned incenseºº
unto them. |
 25:15
And the anger of the Lord came upon Amaziah{gr.Amasias}, and he sent him a prophet, and he said to him, Why hast thou sought the gods of the people, which have not rescued their own people out of thine hand? |
 25:15
Wherefore the angerº
of Yahwehº
was kindledºº
against Amaziah,º
and he sentºº
untoº
him a prophet,º
which saidºº
unto him, Whyº
hast thou soughtºº
afterºº
the elohimº
of the people,º
whichº
could notº
deliverººº
their own peopleº
out of thine hand?ºº |
 25:16
And it came to pass when the prophet was speaking to him, that he said to him, have I made thee king's counsellor? take heed lest thou be scourged: and the prophet forebore, and said, I know that [God] is disposed against thee to destroy thee, because thou hast done this thing, and hast not hearkened to my counsel. |
 25:16
And it came to pass,º
as he talkedºº
withº
him, that [the king] saidºº
unto him, Art thou madeºº
of the king'sº
counsel?ºº
forbear;ºº
whyº
shouldest thou be smitten?ºº
Then the prophetº
forbare,ºº
and said,ºº
I knowºº
thatº
Elohimº
hath determinedºº
to destroyºº
thee, becauseº
thou hast doneºº
this,º
and hast notº
hearkenedºº
unto my counsel.º |
 25:17 ¶
And Amaziah{gr.Amasias} king of Judah{gr.Juda} took counsel, and sent to Joash{gr.Joas}, son of Jehoahaz{gr.Joachaz}, son of Jehu{gr.Jeu}, king of Israel, saying, Come, and let us look one another in the face. |
 25:17 ¶
Then Amaziahº
kingº
of Judahº
took advice,ºº
and sentºº
toº
Joash,º
the sonº
of Jehoahaz,º
the sonº
of Jehu,º
kingº
of Israel,º
saying,ºº
Come,ººº
let us see one anotherºº
in the face.º |
 25:18
And Joash{gr.Joas} king of Israel sent to Amaziah{gr.Amasias} king of Judah{gr.Juda}, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon{gr.Libanus} sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon{gr.Libanus}, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife; but, behold, thy wild beasts of the field that are in Lebanon{gr.Libanus} shall come: and the wild beasts did come, and trod down the thistle. |
 25:18
And Joashº
kingº
of Israelº
sentºº
toº
Amaziahº
kingº
of Judah,º
saying,ºº
The thistleº
thatº
[was] in Lebanonº
sentºº
toº
the cedarº
thatº
[was] in Lebanon,º
saying,ºº
Giveººº
thy daughterº
to my sonº
to wife:º
and there passed byºº
a wildº
beastº
thatº
[was] in Lebanon,º
and trode downººº
the thistle.º |
 25:19
Thou hast said, Behold, I have smitten Edom{gr.Idumea}, and thy stout heart exalts thee: now stay at home; for why dost thou implicate thyself in mischief, that thou shouldest fall, and Judah{gr.Juda} with thee. |
 25:19
Thou sayest,ºº
Lo,º
thou hast smittenººº
the Edomites;º
and thine heartº
lifteth thee upºº
to boast:ºº
abideºº
nowº
at home;º
whyº
shouldest thou meddleºº
to [thine] hurt,º
that thou shouldest fall,ºº
[even] thou,º
and Judahº
withº
thee? |
 25:20
Nevertheless Amaziah{gr.Amasias} hearkened not, for it was of the Lord to deliver him into [the enemy's] hands, because he sought after the gods of the Edomites{gr.Idumeans}. |
 25:20
But Amaziahº
would notº
hear;ºº
forº
itº
[came] of Elohim,ºº
thatº
he might deliverºº
them into the handº
[of their enemies], becauseº
they soughtºº
afterºº
the elohimº
of Edom.º |
 25:21
So Joash{gr.Joas} king of Israel went up; and they saw one another, he and Amaziah{gr.Amasias} king of Judah{gr.Juda}, in Bethshemesh{gr.Baethsamys}, which is of Judah{gr.Juda}. |
 25:21
So Joashº
the kingº
of Israelº
went up;ºº
and they saw one anotherºº
in the face,º
[both] heº
and Amaziahº
kingº
of Judah,º
at Bethshemesh,º
whichº
[belongeth] to Judah.º |
 25:22
And Judah{gr.Juda} was put to flight before Israel, and they fled every man to his tent. |
 25:22
And Judahº
was put to the worseºº
beforeº
Israel,º
and they fledºº
every manº
to his tent.º |
 25:23
And Joash{gr.Joas} king of Israel took prisoner Amaziah{gr.Amasias} king of Judah{gr.Juda}, [son] of Joash{gr.Joas}, son of Jehoahaz{gr.Joachaz}, in Bethshemesh{gr.Baethsamys}, and brought him to Jerusalem; and he pulled down [part] of the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits. |
 25:23
And Joashº
the kingº
of Israelº
tookºº
Amaziahº
kingº
of Judah,º
the sonº
of Joash,º
the sonº
of Jehoahaz,º
at Bethshemesh,º
and broughtºº
him to Jerusalem,º
and brake downºº
the wallº
of Jerusalemº
from the gateºº
of Ephraimº
toº
the cornerººº
gate,º
fourº
hundredº
cubits.º |
 25:24
And [he took] all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of the Lord and with Obededom{gr.Abdedom}, and the treasures of the king's house, and the hostages, and he returned to Samaria. |
 25:24
And [he took] allº
the goldº
and the silver,º
andº
allº
the vesselsº
that were foundºº
in the houseº
of Elohimº
withº
Obededom,º
and the treasuresº
of the king'sº
house,ºº
the hostagesºº
also, and returnedºº
to Samaria.º |
 25:25 ¶
And Amaziah{gr.Amasias} the [son] of Joash{gr.Joas} king of Judah{gr.Juda} lived after the death of Joash{gr.Joas} the [son] of Jehoahaz{gr.Joachaz} king of Israel fifteen years. |
 25:25 ¶
And Amaziahº
the sonº
of Joashº
kingº
of Judahº
livedºº
afterº
the deathº
of Joashº
sonº
of Jehoahazº
kingº
of Israelº
fifteenºº
years.º |
 25:26
And the rest of the acts of Amaziah{gr.Amasias}, the first and the last, Lo! are they not written in the book of the kings of Judah{gr.Juda} and Israel? |
 25:26
Now the restº
of the actsº
of Amaziah,º
firstº
and last,º
behold,º
[are] they notº
writtenºº
inº
the bookº
of the kingsº
of Judahº
and Israel?º |
 25:27 ¶
And at the time when Amaziah{gr.Amasias} departed from the Lord, then they formed a conspiracy against him; and he fled from Jerusalem to Lachish{gr.Lachis}: and they sent after him to Lachish{gr.Lachis}, and slew him there. |
 25:27 ¶
Now after the timeºº
thatº
Amaziahº
did turn awayºº
from followingºº
Yahwehº
they madeºº
a conspiracyº
againstº
him in Jerusalem;º
and he fledºº
to Lachish:º
but they sentºº
to Lachishº
afterº
him, and slewºº
him there.º |
 25:28
And they took him up on horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of David. |
 25:28
And they broughtºº
him uponº
horses,º
and buriedºº
him withº
his fathersº
in the cityº
of Judah.º |
