 15:1 ¶
Then answeredºº
´Élîfäz
אֱלִיפָזº
the
Têmänî
תֵּימָנִי,º
and said,ºº |
|
 15:1 ¶
Then answered Elifaz the Temani, and said, |
 15:2
Should a wiseº
manº
utterºº
vainº
knowledge,º
and fillºº
his bellyº
with the east wind?º |
 15:2
Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind? |
 15:3
Should he reasonºº
with unprofitableººº
talk?º
or with speechesº
wherewith he can do noº
good?ºº |
 15:3
Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good? |
 15:4
Yea,º
thouº
castest offºº
fear,º
and restrainestºº
prayerº
beforeº
´Ël
אֵל.º |
 15:4
Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before El. |
 15:5
Forº
thy mouthº
utterethºº
thine iniquity,º
and thou choosestºº
the tongueº
of the crafty.º |
 15:5
For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty. |
 15:6
Thine own mouthº
condemnethºº
thee, and notº
I:º
yea, thine own lipsº
testifyºº
against thee. |
 15:6
Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee. |
 15:7
[Art] thou the firstºº
manº
[that] was born?ºº
or wast thou madeºº
beforeº
the hills?º |
 15:7
[Art] thou the first man [that] was born? or wast thou made before the hills? |
 15:8
Hast thou heardºº
the secretº
of
´Élôåh
אֱלוֹהַ?º
and dost thou restrainºº
wisdomº
toº
thyself? |
 15:8
Hast thou heard the secret of Eloah? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself? |
 15:9
Whatº
knowestºº
thou, that we knowºº
not?º
[what] understandestºº
thou, whichº
[is] notº
inº
us? |
 15:9
What knowest thou, that we know not? [what] understandest thou, which [is] not in us? |
 15:10
With us [are] bothº
the grayheadedºº
andº
very agedº
men,º
muchº
elderºº
than thy father.ºº |
 15:10
With us [are] both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father. |
 15:11
[Are] the consolationsº
of
´Ël
אֵלº
smallº
withº
thee? is there any secretº
thingº
withº
thee? |
 15:11
[Are] the consolations of El small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee? |
 15:12
Whyº
doth thine heartº
carry thee away?ºº
and whatº
do thy eyesº
wink at,ºº |
 15:12
Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at, |
 15:13
Thatº
thou turnestºº
thy spiritº
againstº
´Ël
אֵל,º
and lettest [such] wordsº
go outºº
of thy mouth?ºº |
 15:13
That thou turnest thy spirit against El, and lettest [such] words go out of thy mouth? |
 15:14
Whatº
[is] man,º
thatº
he should be clean?ºº
and [he which is] bornºº
of a woman,º
thatº
he should be righteous?ºº |
 15:14
What [is] man, that he should be clean? and [he which is] born of a woman, that he should be righteous? |
 15:15
Behold,º
he putteth no trustººº
in his saints;º
yea, the heavensº
are notº
cleanºº
in his sight.º |
 15:15
Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight. |
 15:16
How much moreºº
abominableºº
and filthyºº
[is] man,º
which drinkethºº
iniquityºº
like water?º |
 15:16
How much more abominable and filthy [is] man, which drinketh iniquity like water? |
 15:17
I will shewºº
thee, hearºº
me; and thatº
[which] I have seenºº
I will declare;ºº |
 15:17
I will shew thee, hear me; and that [which] I have seen I will declare; |
 15:18
Whichº
wiseº
men have toldºº
from their fathers,ºº
and have notº
hidºº
[it]: |
 15:18
Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid [it]: |
 15:19
Unto whom aloneº
the earthº
was given,ºº
and noº
strangerºº
passedºº
amongº
them. |
 15:19
Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them. |
 15:20
The wickedº
manº
travailethºº
with painº
allº
[his] days,º
and the numberº
of yearsº
is hiddenºº
to the oppressor.º |
 15:20
The wicked man travaileth with pain all [his] days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor. |
 15:21
A dreadfulº
soundº
[is] in his ears:º
in prosperityº
the destroyerºº
shall comeºº
uponº
him. |
 15:21
A dreadful sound [is] in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him. |
 15:22
He believethºº
notº
that he shall returnºº
out ofº
darkness,º
and heº
is waitedºº
forº
ofº
the sword.º |
 15:22
He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword. |
 15:23
Heº
wandereth abroadºº
for bread,º
[saying], Whereº
[is it]? he knowethºº
thatº
the dayº
of darknessº
is readyºº
at his hand.º |
 15:23
He wandereth abroad for bread, [saying], Where [is it]? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. |
 15:24
Troubleº
and anguishº
shall make him afraid;ºº
they shall prevailºº
againstº
him, as a kingº
readyº
to the battle.º |
 15:24
Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle. |
 15:25
Forº
he stretcheth outºº
his handº
againstº
´Ël
אֵל,º
and strengthenethºº
himselfº
againstº
Šadday
שַׁדַּי.º |
 15:25
For he stretcheth out his hand against El, and strengtheneth himself against Shadday. |
 15:26
He runnethºº
uponº
him, [even] on [his] neck,º
upon the thickº
bossesº
of his bucklers:º |
 15:26
He runneth upon him, [even] on [his] neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers: |
 15:27
Becauseº
he coverethºº
his faceº
with his fatness,º
and makethºº
collops of fatº
onº
[his] flanks.º |
 15:27
Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on [his] flanks. |
 15:28
And he dwellethºº
inº
desolateºº
cities,º
[and] in housesº
whichº
noº
man inhabiteth,ºº
whichº
are readyºº
to become heaps.º |
 15:28
And he dwelleth in desolate cities, [and] in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps. |
 15:29
He shall notº
be rich,ºº
neitherº
shall his substanceº
continue,ºº
neitherº
shall he prolongºº
the perfectionº
thereof upon the earth.º |
 15:29
He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth. |
 15:30
He shall notº
departºº
out ofº
darkness;º
the flameº
shall dry upºº
his branches,º
and by the breathº
of his mouthº
shall he go away.ºº |
 15:30
He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away. |
 15:31
Let notº
him that is deceivedºº
trustºº
in vanity:º
forº
vanityº
shall beº
his recompence.º |
 15:31
Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence. |
 15:32
It shall be accomplishedºº
beforeº
his time,º
and his branchº
shall notº
be green.º |
 15:32
It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green. |
 15:33
He shall shake offºº
his unripe grapeº
as the vine,º
and shall cast offºº
his flowerº
as the olive.º |
 15:33
He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive. |
 15:34
Forº
the congregationº
of hypocritesº
[shall be] desolate,º
and fireº
shall consumeºº
the tabernaclesº
of bribery.º |
 15:34
For the congregation of hypocrites [shall be] desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery. |
 15:35
They conceiveºº
mischief,º
and bring forthºº
vanity,º
and their bellyº
preparethºº
deceit.º |
 15:35
They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit. |
