1995 New American Standard Bible (NASB)John 191 Christ is scourged, crowned with thorns, and beaten. 4 Pilate is desirous to release him, but being overcome with the outrage of the Jews, he delivered him to be crucified. 23 They cast lots for his garments. 26 He commendeth his mother to John. 28 He dieth. 31 His side is pierced. 38 He is buried by Joseph and Nicodemus. 19:1 Pilate 4091 then 3767 took 2983 Jesus 2424 and scourged 3146 Him. 19:2 And the soldiers 4757 twisted 4120 together a crown 4735 of thorns 173 and put 2007 it on His head 2776, and put 2007 a purple 4210 robe 2440 on Him; 19:3 and they [began] to come 2064 up to Him and say 3004, “Hail 5463, King 935 of the Jews 2453!” and to give 1325 Him slaps 4475 [in the face]. 19:4 Pilate 4091 came 1831 out again 3825 and *said 3004 to them, “Behold 2396, I am bringing 71 Him out to you so 2443 that you may know 1097 that I find 2147 no 3762 guilt 156 in Him.” 19:5 Jesus 2424 then 3767 came 1831 out, wearing 5409 the crown 4735 of thorns 174 and the purple 4210 robe 2440. [Pilate] *said 3004 to them, “Behold 2400, the Man 444!” 19:6 So 3767 when 3753 the chief 749 priests 749 and the officers 5257 saw 3708 Him, they cried 2905 out saying 3004, “Crucify 4717, crucify 4717!” Pilate 4091 *said 3004 to them, “Take 2983 Him yourselves 4771 and crucify 4717 Him, for I find 2147 no 3756 guilt 156 in Him.” 19:7 The Jews 2453 answered 611 him, “We have 2192 a law 3551, and by that law 3551 He ought 3784 to die 599 because 3754 He made 4160 Himself 1438 out [to be] the Son 5207 of God 2316.” 19:8 ¶ Therefore 3767 when 3753 Pilate 4091 heard 191 this 3778 statement 3056, he was [even] more 3123 afraid 5399; 19:9 and he entered 1525 into the Praetorium 4232 again 3825 and *said 3004 to Jesus 2424, “Where 4159 are You from?” But Jesus 2424 gave 1325 him no 3756 answer 612. 19:10 So 3767 Pilate 4091 *said 3004 to Him, “You do not speak 2980 to me? Do You not know 3609a that I have 2192 authority 1849 to release 630 You, and I have 2192 authority 1849 to crucify 4717 You?” 19:11 Jesus 2424 answered 611, “You would have 2192 no 3756 3762 authority 1849 over 2596 Me, unless 1487 3361 it had been 1510 given 1325 you from above 509; for this 3778 reason 1223 he who delivered 3860 Me to you has 2192 [the] greater 3173 sin 266.” 19:12 As a result 1537 of this 3778 Pilate 4091 made 2212 efforts 2212 to release 630 Him, but the Jews 2453 cried 2905 out saying 3004, “If 1437 you release 630 this 3778 Man 3778, you are no 3756 friend 5384 of Caesar 2541; everyone 3956 who makes 4160 himself 1438 out [to be] a king 935 opposes 483 Caesar 2541.” 19:13 ¶ Therefore 3767 when Pilate 4091 heard 191 these 3778 words 3056, he brought 71 Jesus 2424 out, and sat 2523 down 2523 on the judgment 968 seat 968 at a place 5117 called 3004 The Pavement 3038, but in Hebrew 1447, Gabbatha 1042. 19:14 Now 1161 it was the day 3904 of preparation 3904 for the Passover 3957; it was about 5613 the sixth 1623 hour 5610. And he *said 3004 to the Jews 2453, “Behold 2396, your King 935!” 19:15 So 3767 they cried 2905 out, “Away 142 with [Him], away 142 with [Him], crucify 4717 Him!” Pilate 4091 *said 3004 to them, “Shall I crucify 4717 your King 935?” The chief 749 priests 749 answered 611, “We have 2192 no 3756 king 935 but Caesar 2541.” 19:16 So 3767 he then 5119 handed 3860 Him over to them to be crucified 4717. 19:17 ¶ They took 3880 Jesus 2424, therefore 3767, and He went 1831 out, bearing 941 His own 1438 cross 4716, to the place called 3004 the Place 5117 of a Skull 2898, which 3739 is called 3004 in Hebrew 1447, Golgotha 1115. 19:18 There 3699 they crucified 4717 Him, and with Him two 1417 other 243 men 243, one on either 1782 side 1782, and Jesus 2424 in between 3319. 19:19 Pilate 4091 also 2532 wrote 1125 an inscription 5102b and put 5087 it on the cross 4716. It was written 1125, “JESUS 2424 THE NAZARENE 3480, THE KING 935 OF THE JEWS 2453.” 19:20 Therefore 3767 many 4183 of the Jews 2453 read 314 this 3778 inscription 5102b, for the place 5117 where 3699 Jesus 2424 was crucified 4717 was near 1451 the city 4172; and it was written 1125 in Hebrew 1447, Latin 4515 [and] in Greek 1676. 19:21 So 3767 the chief 749 priests 749 of the Jews 2453 were saying 3004 to Pilate 4091, “Do not write 1125, ‘The King 935 of the Jews 2453’; but that He said 3004, ‘I am 1510 King 935 of the Jews 2453.’” 19:22 Pilate 4091 answered 611, “What 3739 I have written 1125 I have written 1125.” 19:23 ¶ Then 3767 the soldiers 4757, when 3753 they had crucified 4717 Jesus 2424, took 2983 His outer 2440 garments 2440 and made 4160 four 5064 parts 3313, a part 3313 to every 1538 soldier 4757 and [also] the tunic 5509; now 1161 the tunic 5509 was seamless 690a, woven 5307 in one 3650 piece 3650. 19:24 So 3767 they said 3004 to one 240 another 240, “Let us not tear 4977 it, but cast 2975 lots 2975 for it, [to decide] whose 5101 it shall be”; [this was] to fulfill 4137 the Scripture 1124: “THEY DIVIDED 1266 MY OUTER 2440 GARMENTS 2440 AMONG 1266 THEM, AND FOR MY CLOTHING 2441 THEY CAST 906 LOTS 2819.” 19:25 Therefore 3767 the soldiers 4757 did 4160 these 3778 things 3778. ¶ But standing 2476 by the cross 4716 of Jesus 2424 were His mother 3384, and His mother’s 3384 sister 79, Mary 3137 the [wife] of Clopas 2832, and Mary 3137 Magdalene 3094. 19:26 When Jesus 2424 then 3767 saw 3708 His mother 3384, and the disciple 3101 whom 3739 He loved 25 standing 3936 nearby 3936, He *said 3004 to His mother 3384, “Woman 1135, behold 2396, your son 5207!” 19:27 Then 1534 He *said 3004 to the disciple 3101, “Behold 2396, your mother 3384!” From that hour 5610 the disciple 3101 took 2983 her into his own 2398 [household]. 19:28 ¶ After 3326 this 3778, Jesus 2424, knowing 3609a that all 3956 things 3956 had already 2235 been accomplished 5055, to fulfill 5048 the Scripture 1124, *said 3004, “I am 1372 thirsty 1372.” 19:29 A jar 4632 full 3324 of sour 3690 wine 3690 was standing 2749 there; so 3767 they put 4060 a sponge 4699 full 3324 of the sour 3690 wine 3690 upon [a branch of] hyssop 5301 and brought 4374 it up to His mouth 4750. 19:30 Therefore 3767 when 3753 Jesus 2424 had received 2983 the sour 3690 wine 3690, He said 3004, “It is finished 5055!” And He bowed 2827 His head 2776 and gave 3860 up His spirit 4151. 19:31 ¶ Then 3767 the Jews 2453, because 1893 it was the day 3904 of preparation 3904, so 2443 that the bodies 4983 would not remain 3306 on the cross 4716 on the Sabbath 4521 (for that Sabbath 4521 was a high 3173 day 3904), asked 2065 Pilate 4091 that their legs 4628 might be broken 2608a, and [that] they might be taken 142 away 142. 19:32 So 3767 the soldiers 4757 came 2064, and broke 2608a the legs 4628 of the first 4413 man 4413 and of the other 243 who was crucified 4957 with Him; 19:33 but coming 2064 to Jesus 2424, when 5613 they saw 3708 that He was already 2235 dead 2348, they did not break 2608a His legs 4628. 19:34 But one 1520 of the soldiers 4757 pierced 3572 His side 4125 with a spear 3057, and immediately 2117 blood 129 and water 5204 came 1831 out. 19:35 And he who has seen 3708 has testified 3140, and his testimony 3140 is true 228; and he knows 3609a that he is telling 3004 the truth 227, so 2443 that you also 2532 may believe 4100. 19:36 For these 3778 things 3778 came 1096 to pass 1096 to fulfill 4137 the Scripture 1124, “NOT A BONE 3747 OF HIM SHALL BE BROKEN 4937.” 19:37 And again 3825 another 2087 Scripture 1124 says 3004, “THEY SHALL LOOK 3708 ON HIM WHOM 3739 THEY PIERCED 1574.” 19:38 ¶ After 3326 these 3778 things 3778 Joseph 2501 of Arimathea 707, being 1510 a disciple 3101 of Jesus 2424, but a secret 2928 [one] for fear 5401 of the Jews 2453, asked 2065 Pilate 4091 that he might take 142 away 142 the body 4983 of Jesus 2424; and Pilate 4091 granted 2010 permission 2010. So 3767 he came 2064 and took 142 away 142 His body 4983. 19:39 Nicodemus 3530, who had first 4413 come 2064 to Him by night 3571, also 2532 came 2064, bringing 5342 a mixture 3395 of myrrh 4666 and aloes 250, about 5613 a hundred 1540 pounds 3046 [weight]. 19:40 So 3767 they took 2983 the body 4983 of Jesus 2424 and bound 1210 it in linen 3608 wrappings 3608 with the spices 759, as is the burial 1779 custom 1485 of the Jews 2453. 19:41 Now 1161 in the place 5117 where 3699 He was crucified 4717 there was a garden 2779, and in the garden 2779 a new 2537 tomb 3419 in which 3739 no 3762 one 3762 had yet 3764 been 1510 laid 5087. 19:42 Therefore 3767 because 1223 of the Jewish 2453 day 3904 of preparation 3904, since 3754 the tomb 3419 was nearby 1451, they laid 5087 Jesus 2424 there 1563. |
