 5:1 ¶ And the sons of Reuben{gr.Ruben} the first-born of Israel (for he [was] the first-born; but because of his going up to his father's couch, [his father] gave his blessing to his son Joseph, [even] the son of Israel; and he was not reckoned as first-born;

 5:1 ¶ Now the sonsº of Reubenº the firstbornº of Israel,º (forº heº [was] the firstborn;º but, forasmuch as he defiledºº his father'sº bed,º his birthrightº was givenºº unto the sonsº of Josephº the sonº of Israel:º and the genealogy is not to be reckonedººº after the birthright.º

 5:2 for Judah{gr.Judas} [was] very mighty even among his brethren, and one was to be a ruler out of him: but the blessing [was] Joseph's).

 5:2 Forº Judahº prevailedºº above his brethren,º and ofº him [came] the chief ruler;º but the birthrightº [was] Joseph's:)º

 5:3 The sons of Reuben{gr.Ruben} the first-born of Israel; Enoch, and Phallus, Asrom, and Carmi{gr.Charmi}.

 5:3 The sons,º [I say], of Reubenº the firstbornº of Israelº [were], Hanoch,º and Pallu,º Hezron,º and Carmi.º

 5:4 The sons of Joel; Shimei{gr.Semei}, and Benaiah{gr.Banaia} his son: and the sons of Gug the son of Shimei{gr.Semei}.

 5:4 The sonsº of Joel;º Shemaiahº his son,º Gogº his son,º Shimeiº his son,º

 5:5 His son [was] Micah{gr.Micha}, his son Recha, his son Joel,

 5:5 Micahº his son,º Reaiaº his son,º Baalº his son,º

 5:6 his son Baal{gr.Beel}, whom Thagla-phallasar king of Assyria carried away captive: he [is] the chief of the Rubenites.

 5:6 Beerahº his son,º whomº Tilgathpilneserº kingº of Assyriaº carried awayºº [captive]: heº [was] princeº of the Reubenites.º

 5:7 And his brethren in his family, in their distribution according to their generations; the chief, Joel, and Zechariah{gr.Zacharia}.

 5:7 And his brethrenº by their families,º when the genealogyºº of their generationsº was reckoned,ºº [were] the chief,º Jeiel,º and Zechariah,º

 5:8 And Balec the son of Azuz, the son of Sama, the son of Joel: he dwelt in Aroer, and even to Nebo{gr.Naban}, and Beelmasson.

 5:8 And Belaº the sonº of Azaz,º the sonº of Shema,º the sonº of Joel,º whoº dweltºº in Aroer,º even untoº Neboº and Baalmeon:º

 5:9 And he dwelt eastward to the borders of the wilderness, from the river Euphrates: for they had much cattle in the land of Gilead{gr.Galaad}.

 5:9 And eastwardº he inhabitedºº untoº the enteringºº inº of the wildernessº fromº the riverº Euphrates:º becauseº their cattleº were multipliedºº in the landº of Gilead.º

 5:10 And in the days of Saul they made war upon the sojourners [in the land]; and they fell into their hands, all of them dwelling in their tents eastward of Gilead{gr.Galaad}.

 5:10 And in the daysº of Saulº they madeºº warº withº the Hagarites,º who fellºº by their hand:º and they dweltºº in their tentsº throughoutº allººº the eastº [land] of Gilead.º

 5:11 ¶ The sons of Gad dwelt over against them in the land of Bashan{gr.Basan} even to Sela.

 5:11 ¶ And the childrenº of Gadº dweltºº over againstº them, in the landº of Bashanº untoº Salchah:º

 5:12 Joel the first-born, and Sapham the second, and Janin the scribe in Bashan{gr.Basan}.

 5:12 Joelº the chief,º and Shaphamº the next,º and Jaanai,º and Shaphatº in Bashan.º

 5:13 And their brethren according to the houses of their fathers; Michael, Meshullam{gr.Mosollam}, and Sebee, and Joree, and Joachan, and Zue, and Obed, seven.

 5:13 And their brethrenº of the houseº of their fathersº [were], Michael,º and Meshullam,º and Sheba,º and Jorai,º and Jachan,º and Zia,º and Heber,º seven.º

 5:14 These [are] the sons of Abichaia the son of Uri, the son of Idai, the son of Gilead{gr.Galaad}, the son of Michael, the son of Jesai, the son of Jeddai, the son of Buz,

 5:14 Theseº [are] the childrenº of Abihailº the sonº of Huri,º the sonº of Jaroah,º the sonº of Gilead,º the sonº of Michael,º the sonº of Jeshishai,º the sonº of Jahdo,º the sonº of Buz;º

 5:15 [who was] the brother of the son of Abdiel, the son of Guni, [he was] chief of the house of their families.

 5:15 Ahiº the sonº of Abdiel,º the sonº of Guni,º chiefº of the houseº of their fathers.º

 5:16 They dwelt in Gilead{gr.Galaad}, in Bashan{gr.Basan}, and in their villages, and [in] all the country round about Saron to the border.

 5:16 And they dweltºº in Gileadº in Bashan,º and in her towns,º and in allº the suburbsº of Sharon,º uponº their borders.º

 5:17 The enumeration of [them] all took place in the days of Jotham{gr.Joatham} king of Judah{gr.Juda}, and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel.

 5:17 Allº these were reckoned by genealogiesºº in the daysº of Jothamº kingº of Judah,º and in the daysº of Jeroboamº kingº of Israel.º

 5:18 ¶ The sons of Reuben{gr.Ruben} and Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh{gr.Manasse}, of mighty men, bearing shields and sword, and bending the bow, and skilled in war, [were] forty and four thousand and seven hundred and sixty, going forth to battle.

 5:18 ¶ The sonsº of Reuben,º and the Gadites,º and halfº the tribeº of Manasseh,º ofº valiant men,ºº menºº able to bearºº bucklerº and sword,º and to shootºº with bow,º and skilfulºº in war,º [were] fourº and fortyº thousandº sevenº hundredº and threescore,º that went outºº to the war.º

 5:19 And they made war with the Agarenes, and Itureans, and Naphiseans, and Nadabeans,

 5:19 And they madeºº warº withº the Hagarites,º with Jetur,º and Nephish,º and Nodab.º

 5:20 and they prevailed against them: and the Agaraeans were given into their hands, [they] and all their tents: for they cried to God in the battle, and he hearkened to them, because they trusted on him.

 5:20 And they were helpedºº againstº them, and the Hagaritesº were deliveredºº into their hand,º and allº that [were] withºº them: forº they criedºº to Elohimº in the battle,º and he was intreatedºº of them; becauseº they put their trustºº in him.

 5:21 And they took captive their store; five thousand camels, and two hundred and fifty thousand sheep, two thousand asses, and a hundred thousand men.

 5:21 And they took awayºº their cattle;º of their camelsº fiftyº thousand,º and of sheepº two hundredº and fiftyº thousand,º and of assesº two thousand,º and of menºº an hundredº thousand.º

 5:22 For many fell slain, because the war [was] of God. And they dwelt in their place until the captivity.

 5:22 Forº there fellºº downº manyº slain,º becauseº the warº [was] of Elohim.ºº And they dweltºº in their steadsº untilº the captivity.º

 5:23 ¶ And the half-tribe of Manasseh{gr.Manasse} dwelt from Bashan{gr.Basan} to Baal, Ermon, and Sanir, and [to] the mount Hermon{gr.Aermon}: and they increased in Lebanon{gr.Libanus}.

 5:23 ¶ And the childrenº of the halfº tribeº of Manassehº dweltºº in the land:º theyº increasedºº from Bashanºº untoº Baalhermonº and Senir,º and unto mountº Hermon.º

 5:24 And these were the heads of the houses of their families; Hepher{gr.Opher}, and Sei, and Eliel, and Jeremiah{gr.Jeremia}, and Oduia, and Jediel, mighty men of valour, men of renown, heads of the houses of their families.

 5:24 And theseº [were] the headsº of the houseº of their fathers,º even Epher,º and Ishi,º and Eliel,º and Azriel,º and Jeremiah,º and Hodaviah,º and Jahdiel,º mightyº menºº of valour,º famousº men,ºº [and] headsº of the houseº of their fathers.º

 5:25 ¶ But they rebelled against the God of their fathers, and went a-whoring after the gods of the nations of the land, whom God cast out from before them.

 5:25 ¶ And they transgressedºº against the Elohimº of their fathers,º and went a whoringºº afterº the elohimº of the peopleº of the land,º whomº Elohimº destroyedºº beforeºº them.

 5:26 And the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Phaloch king of Assyria, and the spirit of Thagla-phallasar king of Assyria, and carried away Reuben{gr.Ruben} and Gaddi, and the half-tribe of Manasseh{gr.Manasse}, and brought them to Chaach, and Chabor, and to the river Gozan, until this day.

 5:26 And the Elohimº of Israelº stirred upººº the spiritº of Pulº kingº of Assyria,º and the spiritº of Tilgathpilneserº kingº of Assyria,º and he carried them away,ºº even the Reubenites,º and the Gadites,º and the halfº tribeº of Manasseh,º and broughtºº them unto Halah,º and Habor,º and Hara,º and to the riverº Gozan,º untoº thisº day.º
