 16:1 ¶ And the Lord said to Samuel, How long dost thou mourn for Saul, whereas I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill thy horn with oil, and come, I will send thee to Jesse{gr.Jessae}, to Bethlehem{gr.Bethleem}; for I have seen among his sons a king for me.

 16:1 ¶ And Yahwehº saidºº untoº Samuel,º How longºº wilt thouº mournºº forº Saul,º seeing Iº have rejectedºº him from reigningººº overº Israel?º fillºº thine hornº with oil,º and go,ººº I will sendºº thee toº Jesseº the Bethlehemite:º forº I have providedºº me a kingº among his sons.º

 16:2 And Samuel said, How can I go? whereas Saul will hear of it, and slay me: and the Lord said, Take a heifer in thine hand and thou shall say, I am come to sacrifice to the Lord.

 16:2 And Samuelº said,ºº Howº can I go?ººº if Saulº hearºº [it], he will killºº me. And Yahwehº said,ºº Takeºº an heiferºº withº thee,º and say,ºº I am comeºº to sacrificeºº to Yahweh.º

 16:3 And thou shalt call Jesse{gr.Jessae} to the sacrifice, and I will make known to thee what thou shalt do; and thou shalt anoint him whom I shall mention to thee.

 16:3 And callºº Jesseº to the sacrifice,º and Iº will shewºº theeº whatº thou shalt do:ºº and thou shalt anointºº unto me [him]º whomº I nameºº untoº thee.

 16:4 And Samuel did all that the Lord told him; and he came to Bethlehem{gr.Bethleem}: and the elders of the city were amazed at meeting him, and said, Dost thou come peaceably, thou Seer?

 16:4 And Samuelº didººº that whichº Yahwehº spake,ºº and cameºº to Bethlehem.º And the eldersº of the townº trembledºº at his coming,ººº and said,ºº Comestºº thou peaceably?º

 16:5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice to the Lord. Sanctify yourselves, and rejoice with me this day: and he sanctified Jesse{gr.Jessae} and his sons, and he called them to the sacrifice.

 16:5 And he said,ºº Peaceably:º I am comeºº to sacrificeºº unto Yahweh:º sanctifyºº yourselves,º and comeºº withº me to the sacrifice.º And he sanctifiedººº Jesseº and his sons,º and calledºº them to the sacrifice.º

 16:6 ¶ And it came to pass when they came in, that he saw Aholiab{gr.Eliab}, and said, Surely the Lord's anointed [is] before him.

 16:6 ¶ And it came to pass,º when they were come,ºº that he lookedºº onºº Eliab,º and said,ºº Surelyº Yahweh'sº anointedº [is] beforeº him.

 16:7 But the Lord said to Samuel, Look not on his appearance, nor on his stature, for I have rejected him; for God sees not as man looks; for man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.

 16:7 But Yahwehº saidºº untoº Samuel,º Lookºº notº onº his countenance,º or onº the heightº of his stature;º becauseº I have refusedºº him: forº [Yahweh seeth] notº asº manº seeth;ºº forº manº lookethºº on the outward appearance,º but Yahwehº lookethºº on the heart.º

 16:8 And Jesse{gr.Jessae} called Amminadab{gr.Aminadab}, and he passed before Samuel: and he said, Neither has God chosen this one.

 16:8 Then Jesseº calledººº Abinadab,º and made him passºº beforeº Samuel.º And he said,ºº Neitherºº hath Yahwehº chosenºº this.º

 16:9 And Jesse{gr.Jessae} caused Sama to pass by: and he said, Neither has God chosen this one.

 16:9 Then Jesseº made Shammahº to pass by.ºº And he said,ºº Neitherºº hath Yahwehº chosenºº this.º

 16:10 And Jesse{gr.Jessae} caused his seven sons to pass before Samuel: and Samuel said, the Lord has not chosen these.

 16:10 Again, Jesseº made sevenº of his sonsº to passºº beforeº Samuel.º And Samuelº saidºº untoº Jesse,º Yahwehº hath notº chosenºº these.º

 16:11 And Samuel said to Jesse{gr.Jessae}, Hast thou no more sons? And Jesse{gr.Jessae} said, [There is] yet a little one; behold, he tends the flock. And Samuel said to Jesse{gr.Jessae}, Send and fetch him for we may not sit down till he comes.

 16:11 And Samuelº saidºº untoº Jesse,º Are here allºº [thy] children?º And he said,ºº There remainethºº yetº the youngest,º and, behold,º he keepethºº the sheep.º And Samuelº saidºº untoº Jesse,º Sendºº and fetchºº him: forº we will notº sit downºº tillº he comeºº hither.º

 16:12 And he sent and fetched him: and he was ruddy, with beauty of eyes, and very goodly to behold. And the Lord said to Samuel, Arise, and anoint David, for he is good.

 16:12 And he sent,ºº and broughtº him in.ºº Now heº [was] ruddy,º [and] withalº of a beautifulº countenance,º and goodlyº to look to.º And Yahwehº said,ºº Arise,ºº anointºº him: forº thisº [is] he.º

 16:13 And Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward: and Samuel arose, and departed to Armathaim.

 16:13 Then Samuelº tookººº the hornº of oil,º and anointedºº him in the midstº of his brethren:º and the Spiritº of Yahwehº cameºº uponº Davidº from that dayººº forward.º So Samuelº rose up,ºº and wentººº to Ramah.º

 16:14 ¶ And the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him.

 16:14 ¶ But the Spiritº of Yahwehº departedºº fromºº Saul,º and an evilº spiritº fromºº Yahwehº troubledºº him.

 16:15 And Saul's servants said to him, Behold now, and evil spirit from the Lord torments thee.

 16:15 And Saul'sº servantsº saidºº untoº him, Beholdº now,º an evilº spiritº from Elohimº troublethºº thee.

 16:16 Let now thy servants speak before thee, and let them seek for our lord a man skilled to play on the harp; and it shall come to pass when an evil spirit comes upon thee and he shall play on his harp, that thou shalt be well, and he shall refresh thee.

 16:16 Let our adonº nowº commandºº thy servants,º [which are] beforeº thee, to seek outºº a man,º [who is] a cunningºº playerºº on an harp:º and it shall come to pass,º whenº the evilº spiritº from Elohimº is uponº thee, that he shall playºº with his hand,º and thou shalt be well.ºº

 16:17 And Saul said to his servants, Look now out for me a skillful player, and bring him to me.

 16:17 And Saulº saidºº untoº his servants,º Provideºº me nowº a manº that can playºº well,ºº and bringºº [him] toº me.

 16:18 And one of his servants answered and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse{gr.Jessae} the Bethlehemite{gr.Bethleemite}, and he understands playing [on the harp], and the man [is] prudent, and a warrior, and wise in speech, and the man [is] handsome, and the Lord [is] with him.

 16:18 Then answeredºº oneº of the servants,º and said,ºº Behold,º I have seenºº a sonº of Jesseº the Bethlehemite,º [that is] cunningºº in playing,ºº and a mightyº valiant man,º and a manº of war,º and prudentºº in matters,º and a comelyº person,º and Yahwehº [is] withº him.

 16:19 ¶ And Saul sent messengers to Jesse{gr.Jessae}, saying, Send to me thy son David who is with thy flock.

 16:19 ¶ Wherefore Saulº sentºº messengersº untoº Jesse,º and said,ºº Sendºº meº Davidº thy son,º whichº [is] with the sheep.º

 16:20 And Jesse{gr.Jessae} took a homer of bread, and a bottle of wine, and one kid of the goats, and sent them by the hand of his son David to Saul.

 16:20 And Jesseº tookºº an assº [laden] with bread,º and a bottleº of wine,º and aº kid,ºº and sentºº [them] byº Davidº his sonº untoº Saul.º

 16:21 And David went in to Saul, and stood before him; and he loved him greatly; and he became his armour-bearer.

 16:21 And Davidº cameºº toº Saul,º and stoodºº beforeº him: and he lovedºº him greatly;º and he becameº his armourbearer.ººº

 16:22 And Saul sent to Jesse{gr.Jessae}, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me, for he has found grace in my eyes.

 16:22 And Saulº sentºº toº Jesse,º saying,ºº Let David,º I pray thee,º standºº beforeº me; forº he hath foundºº favourº in my sight.º

 16:23 And it came to pass when the evil spirit was upon Saul, that David took his harp, and played with his hand: and Saul was refreshed, and [it was] well with him, and the evil spirit departed from him.

 16:23 And it came to pass,º whenº the [evil] spiritº from Elohimº was uponº Saul,º that Davidº tookººº an harp,º and playedºº with his hand:º so Saulº was refreshed,ºº and was well,ºº and the evilº spiritº departedºº fromºº him.
