 14:1 ¶
And when a certain day arrived, Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man that bore his armour, Come, and let us go over to Messab of the Philistines that is on the other side yonder; but he told not his father. |
|
 14:1 ¶
Now it came to passº
upon a day,º
that Jonathanºº
the sonº
of Saulº
saidºº
untoº
the young manº
that bareºº
his armour,º
Come,ººº
and let us go overºº
toº
the Philistines'º
garrison,º
thatº
[is] on the other side.ººº
But he toldºº
notº
his father.º |
 14:2
And Saul sat on the top of the hill under the pomegranate tree that is in Magdon, and there were with him about six hundred men. |
|
 14:2
And Saulº
tarriedºº
in the uttermostº
partº
of Gibeahº
underº
a pomegranate treeº
whichº
[is] in Migron:º
and the peopleº
thatº
[were] withº
him [were] about sixº
hundredº
men;º |
 14:3
And Ahijah{gr.Achia} son of Ahitub{gr.Achitob}, the brother of Jochabed the son of Phinehas{gr.Phinees}, the son of Eli{gr.Heli}, [was] the priest of God in Shelah{gr.Selom} wearing an ephod: and the people knew not that Jonathan was gone. |
|
 14:3
And Ahiah,º
the sonº
of Ahitub,º
Ichabod'sº
brother,º
the sonº
of Phinehas,º
the sonº
of Eli,º
Yahweh'sº
priestº
in Shiloh,º
wearingºº
an ephod.º
And the peopleº
knewºº
notº
thatº
Jonathanºº
was gone.ºº |
 14:4 ¶
And in the midst of the passage whereby Jonathan sought to pass over to the encampment of the Philistines, there was both a sharp rock on this side, and a sharp rock on the other side: the name of the one [was] Bases, and the name of the other Senna. |
|
 14:4 ¶
And betweenº
the passages,º
by whichº
Jonathanºº
soughtºº
to go overºº
untoº
the Philistines'º
garrison,º
[there was] a sharpº
rockº
on the oneºº
side,ºº
and a sharpº
rockº
on the otherºº
side:ºº
and the nameº
of the oneº
[was] Bozez,º
and the nameº
of the otherº
Seneh.º |
 14:5
The one way [was] northward to one coming to Michmash{gr.Machmas}, and the other way [was] southward to one coming to Gabae. |
|
 14:5
The forefrontº
of the oneº
[was] situateº
northwardºº
over againstº
Michmash,º
and the otherº
southwardºº
over againstº
Gibeah.º |
 14:6
And Jonathan said to the young man that bore his armour, Come, let us go over to Messab of these uncircumcised, if [peradventure] the Lord may do something for us; for the Lord is not straitened to save by many or by few. |
|
 14:6
And Jonathanº
saidºº
toº
the young manº
that bareºº
his armour,º
Come,ººº
and let us go overºº
untoº
the garrisonº
of theseº
uncircumcised:º
it may be thatº
Yahwehº
will workºº
for us: forº
[there is] noº
restraintº
to Yahwehº
to saveºº
by manyº
orº
by few.º |
 14:7
And his armour-bearer said to him, Do all that thine heart inclines toward: behold, I [am] with thee, my heart [is] as thy heart. |
|
 14:7
And his armourbearerººº
saidºº
unto him, Doºº
allº
thatº
[is] in thine heart:º
turnºº
thee; behold,º
I [am] withº
thee according to thy heart.º |
 14:8
And Jonathan said, Behold, we will go over to the men, and will come down suddenly upon them. |
|
 14:8
Then saidºº
Jonathan,º
Behold,º
weº
will pass overºº
untoº
[these] men,ºº
and we will discoverºº
ourselvesº
untoº
them. |
 14:9
If they should say thus to us, Stand aloof there until we shall send you word; then we will stand still by ourselves, and will not go up against them. |
|
 14:9
Ifº
they sayºº
thusº
untoº
us, Tarryºº
untilº
we comeºº
toº
you; then we will stand stillºº
in our place,º
and will notº
go upºº
untoº
them. |
 14:10
[But] if they should say thus to us, Come up to us; then will we go up, for the Lord has delivered them into our hands; this [shall be] a sign to us. |
|
 14:10
But ifº
they sayºº
thus,º
Come upºº
untoº
us; then we will go up:ºº
forº
Yahwehº
hath deliveredºº
them into our hand:º
and thisº
[shall be] a signº
unto us. |
 14:11
And they both went in to Messab of the Philistines; and the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of their Caves, where they had hidden themselves. |
|
 14:11
And bothº
of them discoveredºº
themselvesº
untoº
the garrisonº
of the Philistines:º
and the Philistinesº
said,ºº
Behold,º
the Hebrewsº
come forthºº
out ofº
the holesº
whereºº
they had hidºº
themselves.º |
 14:12
And the men of Messab answered Jonathan and his armour-bearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will shew you a thing: and Jonathan said to his armour-bearer, Come up after me, for the Lord has delivered them into the hands of Israel. |
|
 14:12
And the menºº
of the garrisonº
answeredººº
Jonathanºº
and his armourbearer,ººº
and said,ºº
Come upºº
toº
us, and we will shewºº
you a thing.º
And Jonathanºº
saidºº
untoº
his armourbearer,ººº
Come upºº
afterº
me: forº
Yahwehº
hath deliveredºº
them into the handº
of Israel.º |
 14:13
And Jonathan went up on his hands and feet, and his armour-bearer with him; and they looked on the face of Jonathan, and he smote them, and his armour-bearer did smite [them] after him. |
|
 14:13
And Jonathanºº
climbed upºº
uponº
his handsº
and uponº
his feet,º
and his armourbearerººº
afterº
him: and they fellºº
beforeº
Jonathan;ºº
and his armourbearerººº
slewºº
afterº
him. |
 14:14
And the first slaughter which Jonathan and his armour-bearer effected was twenty men, with darts and slings, and pebbles of the field. |
|
 14:14
And that firstº
slaughter,º
whichº
Jonathanºº
and his armourbearerººº
made,ºº
wasº
about twentyº
men,º
within as it were an halfº
acreº
of land,º
[which] a yokeº
[of oxen might plow]. |
 14:15
And there was dismay in the camp, and in the field; and all the people in Messab, and the spoilers were amazed; and they would not act, and the land was terror-struck, and there was dismay from the lord. |
|
 14:15
And there wasº
tremblingº
in the host,º
in the field,º
and among allº
the people:º
the garrison,º
and the spoilers,ºº
theyº
alsoº
trembled,ºº
and the earthº
quaked:ºº
so it wasº
a very greatº
trembling.º |
 14:16
And the watchmen of Saul beheld in Gibeah{gr.Gabaa} of Benjamin, and, behold, the army was thrown into confusion on every side. |
|
 14:16
And the watchmenºº
of Saulº
in Gibeahº
of Benjaminº
looked;ºº
and, behold,º
the multitudeº
melted away,ºº
and they wentººº
on beating downºº
[one another]. |
 14:17
And Saul said to the people with him, Number yourselves now, and see who has gone out from you: and they numbered themselves, and behold, Jonathan and his armour-bearer were not found. |
|
 14:17
Then saidºº
Saulº
unto the peopleº
thatº
[were] withº
him, Numberºº
now,º
and seeºº
whoº
is goneºº
fromºº
us. And when they had numbered,ºº
behold,º
Jonathanºº
and his armourbearerººº
[were] notº
[there]. |
 14:18
And Saul said to Ahijah{gr.Achia}, Bring the ephod; for he wore the ephod in that day before Israel. |
|
 14:18
And Saulº
saidºº
unto Ahiah,º
Bring hitherºº
the arkº
of Elohim.º
Forº
the arkº
of Elohimº
wasº
at thatº
timeº
with the childrenº
of Israel.º |
 14:19 ¶
And it came to pass while Saul was speaking to the priest, that the sound in the camp of the Philistines continued to increase greatly; and Saul said to the priest, Withdraw thy hands. |
|
 14:19 ¶
And it came to pass,º
whileº
Saulº
talkedºº
untoº
the priest,º
that the noiseº
thatº
[was] in the hostº
of the Philistinesº
wentºº
onºº
and increased:ºº
and Saulº
saidºº
untoº
the priest,º
Withdrawºº
thine hand.º |
 14:20
And Saul went up and all the people that were with him, and they come to the battle: and, behold, [every] man's sword was against his neighbour, a very great confusion. |
|
 14:20
And Saulº
and allº
the peopleº
thatº
[were] withº
him assembledºº
themselves,º
and they cameºº
toº
the battle:º
and, behold,º
every man'sº
swordº
wasº
against his fellow,º
[and there was] a veryº
greatº
discomfiture.º |
 14:21
And the servants who had been before with the Philistines, who had gone up to the army, turned themselves also to be with the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan. |
|
 14:21
Moreover the Hebrewsº
[that] wereº
with the Philistinesº
beforeº
that time,º
whichº
went upºº
withº
them into the campº
[from the country] round about,º
even theyº
alsoº
[turned] to beº
withº
the Israelitesº
thatº
[were] withº
Saulº
and Jonathan.ºº |
 14:22
And all the Israelites who were hidden in mount Ephraim heard also that the Philistines fled; and they also gather themselves after them to battle: and the Lord saved Israel in that day; and the war passed through Bamoth; and all the people with Saul were about ten thousand men. |
|
 14:22
Likewise allº
the menº
of Israelº
which had hidºº
themselvesº
in mountº
Ephraim,º
[when] they heardºº
thatº
the Philistinesº
fled,ºº
even theyº
alsoº
followed hardºº
afterº
them in the battle.º |
 14:23
And the battle extended itself to every city in the mount Ephraim. |
|
 14:23
So Yahwehº
savedººº
Israelº
thatº
day:º
and the battleº
passed overºº
untoº
Bethaven.º |
 14:24 ¶
And Saul committed a great trespass of ignorance in that day, and he lays a curse on the people, saying, Cursed [is] the man who shall eat bread before the evening; so I will avenge myself on my enemy: and none of the people tasted bread, though all the land was dining. |
|
 14:24 ¶
And the menº
of Israelº
were distressedºº
thatº
day:º
for Saulº
had adjuredººº
the people,º
saying,ºº
Cursedºº
[be] the manº
thatº
eatethºº
[any] foodº
untilº
evening,º
that I may be avengedºº
on mine enemies.ººº
So noneºº
of the peopleº
tastedºº
[any] food.º |
 14:25
And Jaal was a wood abounding in swarms of bees on the face of the ground. |
|
 14:25
And allº
[they of] the landº
cameºº
to a wood;º
and there wasº
honeyº
uponºº
the ground.º |
 14:26
And the people went into the place of the bees, and, behold, they continued speaking; and, behold, there was none that put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath of the Lord. |
|
 14:26
And when the peopleº
were comeºº
intoº
the wood,º
behold,º
the honeyº
dropped;º
but noº
man putºº
his handº
toº
his mouth:º
forº
the peopleº
fearedººº
the oath.º |
 14:27
And Jonathan had not heard when his father adjured the people; and he reached forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, an dipped it into the honeycomb, and returned his hand to his mouth, and his eyes recovered their sight. |
|
 14:27
But Jonathanºº
heardºº
notº
when his fatherº
chargedºº
the peopleº
with the oath:ºººº
wherefore he put forthººº
the endº
of the rodº
thatº
[was] in his hand,º
and dippedºº
itº
in an honeycomb,ºº
and putºº
his handº
toº
his mouth;º
and his eyesº
were enlightened.ºº |
 14:28
And one of the people answered and said, Thy father solemnly adjured the people, saying, Cursed [is] the man who shall eat bread to-day. And the people were very faint, |
|
 14:28
Then answeredºº
oneº
of the people,ºº
and said,ºº
Thy fatherº
straitlyºº
chargedºº
the peopleº
with an oath,ºººº
saying,ºº
Cursedºº
[be] the manº
thatº
eatethºº
[any] foodº
this day.º
And the peopleº
were faint.ººº |
 14:29
and Jonathan knew it, and said, My father has destroyed the land: see how my eyes have received sight [now] that I have tasted a little of this honey. |
|
 14:29
Then saidºº
Jonathan,ºº
My fatherº
hath troubledººº
the land:º
see,ºº
I pray you,º
howº
mine eyesº
have been enlightened,ºº
becauseº
I tastedºº
a littleº
of thisº
honey.º |
 14:30
Surely if the people had this day eaten freely of the spoils of their enemies which they found, the slaughter among the Philistines would have been greater. |
|
 14:30
How much more,ºº
if haplyºº
the peopleº
had eatenºº
freelyºº
to dayº
of the spoilºº
of their enemiesºº
whichº
they found?ºº
forº
had there notº
been nowº
a much greaterºº
slaughterº
among the Philistines?º |
 14:31
And on that day he smote some of the Philistines in Michmash{gr.Machmas}; and the people were very weary. |
|
 14:31
And they smoteºº
the Philistinesº
thatº
dayº
from Michmashºº
to Aijalon:º
and the peopleº
were veryº
faint.ººº |
 14:32
And the people turned to the spoil; and the people took flocks, and herds, and calves, and slew them on the ground, and the people ate with the blood. |
|
 14:32
And the peopleº
flewººº
uponº
the spoil,º
and tookºº
sheep,º
and oxen,º
and calves,ºº
and slewºº
[them] on the ground:º
and the peopleº
did eatºº
[them] withº
the blood.º |
 14:33 ¶
And it was reported to Saul, saying, The people have sinned against the Lord, eating with the blood: and Saul said, Out of Getthaim roll a great stone to me hither. |
|
 14:33 ¶
Then they toldºº
Saul,º
saying,ºº
Behold,º
the peopleº
sinºº
against Yahweh,º
in that they eatºº
withº
the blood.º
And he said,ºº
Ye have transgressed:ºº
rollºº
a greatº
stoneº
untoº
me this day.º |
 14:34
And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, and tell them to bring hither every one his calf, and every one his sheep: and let them slay it on this [stone] and sin not against the Lord in eating with the blood: and the people brought each one that which was in his hand, and they slew [them] there. |
|
 14:34
And Saulº
said,ºº
Disperseºº
yourselvesº
among the people,º
and sayºº
unto them, Bring me hitherººº
every manº
his ox,º
and every manº
his sheep,º
and slayºº
[them] here,º
and eat;ºº
and sinºº
notº
against Yahwehº
in eatingºº
withº
the blood.º
And allº
the peopleº
broughtºº
every manº
his oxº
withº
himº
that night,º
and slewºº
[them] there.º |
 14:35
And Saul built an altar there to the Lord: this was the first altar that Saul built to the Lord. |
|
 14:35
And Saulº
builtºº
an altarº
unto Yahweh:º
the same was the firstºº
altarº
that he builtºº
unto Yahweh.º |
 14:36 ¶
And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines this night, and let us plunder among them till the day break, and let us not leave a man among them. And they said, Do all that is good in thy sight: and the priest said, let us draw nigh hither to God. |
|
 14:36 ¶
And Saulº
said,ºº
Let us go downºº
afterº
the Philistinesº
by night,º
and spoilºº
them untilº
the morningº
light,º
and let us notº
leaveºº
a manº
of them. And they said,ºº
Doºº
whatsoeverº
seemethº
goodº
unto thee. Then saidºº
the priest,º
Let us draw nearºº
hitherº
untoº
Elohim.º |
 14:37
And Saul enquired of God, If I go down after the Philistines, wilt thou deliver them into the hands of Israel? And he answered him not in that day. |
|
 14:37
And Saulº
askedºº
counselº
of Elohim,º
Shall I go downºº
afterº
the Philistines?º
wilt thou deliverºº
them into the handº
of Israel?º
But he answeredºº
him notº
thatº
day.º |
 14:38
And Saul said, Bring hither all the chiefs of Israel, and know and see by whom this sin has been committed this day. |
|
 14:38
And Saulº
said,ºº
Draw ye nearºº
hither,º
allº
the chiefº
of the people:º
and knowºº
and seeºº
whereinº
this sinº
hath beenº
thisº
day.º |
 14:39
For as the Lord lives who has saved Israel, if answer should be against my son Jonathan, he shall surely die. And there was no one that answered out of all the people. |
|
 14:39
For,º
[as] Yahwehº
liveth,º
which savethººº
Israel,º
thoughºº
it beº
in Jonathanºº
my son,º
he shall surelyºº
die.ºº
But [there was] not a manº
among allºº
the peopleº
[that] answeredºº
him. |
 14:40
And he said to all the men of Israel, Ye shall be under subjection, and I and Jonathan my son will be under subjection: and the people said to Saul, Do that which is good in thy sight. |
|
 14:40
Then saidºº
he untoº
allº
Israel,º
Beº
yeº
on oneº
side,º
and Iº
and Jonathanºº
my sonº
will beº
on the otherº
side.º
And the peopleº
saidºº
untoº
Saul,º
Doºº
what seemethº
goodº
unto thee. |
 14:41
And Saul said, O Lord God of Israel, why hast thou not answered thy servant this day? [is] the iniquity in me, or in Jonathan my son? Lord God of Israel, give clear [manifestations]; and if [the lot] should declare this, give, I pray thee, to thy people of Israel, give, I pray, holiness. And Jonathan and Saul are taken, and the people escaped. |
|
 14:41
Therefore Saulº
saidºº
untoº
Yahwehº
Elohimº
of Israel,º
Giveºº
a perfectº
[lot]. And Saulº
and Jonathanºº
were taken:ºº
but the peopleº
escaped.ºº |
 14:42
And Saul said, Cast [lots] between me and my son Jonathan: whomsoever the Lord shall cause to be taken by lot, let him die: and the people said to Saul, This thing is not [to be done]: and Saul prevailed against the people, and they cast [lots] between him and Jonathan his son, and Jonathan is taken by lot. |
|
 14:42
And Saulº
said,ºº
Castºº
[lots] betweenº
me and Jonathanºº
my son.º
And Jonathanºº
was taken.ºº |
 14:43
And Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done: and Jonathan told him, and said, I did indeed taste a little honey, with the end of my staff that was in my hand, and, lo! I [am to] die. |
|
 14:43
Then Saulº
saidºº
toº
Jonathan,ºº
Tellºº
me whatº
thou hast done.ºº
And Jonathanºº
toldºº
him, and said,ºº
I did butºº
tasteºº
a littleº
honeyº
with the endº
of the rodº
thatº
[was] in mine hand,º
[and], lo,º
I must die.ºº |
 14:44
And Saul said to him, God do so to me, and more also, thou shalt surely die to-day. |
|
 14:44
And Saulº
answered,ºº
Elohimº
doº
soººº
and moreº
also:ººº
forº
thou shalt surelyºº
die,ºº
Jonathan.ºº |
 14:45
And the people said to Saul, Shall he that has wrought this great salvation in Israel be put to death this day? [As] the Lord lives, there shall not fall to the ground one of the hairs of his head; for the people of God have wrought successfully this day. And the people prayed for Jonathan in that day, and he died not. |
|
 14:45
And the peopleº
saidºº
untoº
Saul,º
Shall Jonathanºº
die,ºº
whoº
hath wroughtºº
thisº
greatº
salvationº
in Israel?º
God forbid:º
[as] Yahwehº
liveth,º
there shall notº
one hairºº
of his headº
fallºº
to the ground;º
forº
he hath wroughtºº
withº
Elohimº
thisº
day.º
So the peopleº
rescuedººº
Jonathan,ºº
that he diedºº
not.º |
 14:46
And Saul went up from following the Philistines; and the Philistines departed to their place. |
|
 14:46
Then Saulº
went upºº
from followingºº
the Philistines:º
and the Philistinesº
wentºº
to their own place.º |
 14:47 ¶
And Saul received the kingdom, by lot he inherits the office [of ruling] over Israel: and he fought against all his enemies round about, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against the children of Edom, and against Baethaeor, and against the king of Zobah{gr.Suba}, and against the Philistines: whithersoever he turned, he was victorious. |
|
 14:47 ¶
So Saulº
tookºº
the kingdomº
overº
Israel,º
and foughtºº
against allº
his enemiesºº
on every side,º
against Moab,º
and against the childrenº
of Ammon,º
and against Edom,º
and against the kingsº
of Zobah,º
and against the Philistines:º
and whithersoeverºº
he turnedºº
himself, he vexedºº
[them]. |
 14:48
And he wrought valiantly, and smote Amalek{gr.Amalec}, and rescued Israel out of the hand of them that trampled on him. |
|
 14:48
And he gatheredºº
an host,º
and smoteººº
the Amalekites,º
and deliveredººº
Israelº
out of the handsºº
of them that spoiledºº
them. |
 14:49
And the sons of Saul were Jonathan, and Jessiu, and Melchisa: and [these were] the names of his two daughters, the name of the first-born Merob, and the name of the second Michal{gr.Melchol}. |
|
 14:49
Now the sonsº
of Saulº
wereº
Jonathan,ºº
and Ishui,º
and Melchishua:º
and the namesº
of his twoº
daughtersº
[were these]; the nameº
of the firstbornº
Merab,º
and the nameº
of the youngerº
Michal:º |
 14:50
And the name of his wife was Achinoom, the daughter of Ahimaaz{gr.Achimaa}: and the name of his captain of the host was Abner{gr.Abenner}, the son of Ner, son of a kinsman of Saul. |
|
 14:50
And the nameº
of Saul'sº
wifeº
[was] Ahinoam,º
the daughterº
of Ahimaaz:º
and the nameº
of the captainº
of his hostº
[was] Abner,º
the sonº
of Ner,º
Saul'sº
uncle.º |
 14:51
And Kish{gr.Kis} [was] the father of Saul, and Ner, the father of Abenezer, [was] son of Jamin, son of Abiel. |
|
 14:51
And Kishº
[was] the fatherº
of Saul;º
and Nerº
the fatherº
of Abnerº
[was] the sonº
of Abiel.º |
 14:52
And the war was vehement against the Philistines all the days of Saul; and when Saul saw any mighty man, and any valiant man, then he took them to himself. |
|
 14:52
And there wasº
soreº
warº
againstº
the Philistinesº
allº
