 1:1 ¶
There was a man of Armathaim Sipha, of mount Ephraim, and his name [was] Elkanah{gr.Helkana}, a son of Jerahmeel{gr.Jeremeel} the son of Elias the son of Thoke, in Nasib Ephraim. |
|
 1:1 ¶
Now there wasº
a certainº
manº
ofº
Ramathaimzophim,º
of mountºº
Ephraim,º
and his nameº
[was] Elkanah,º
the sonº
of Jeroham,º
the sonº
of Elihu,º
the sonº
of Tohu,º
the sonº
of Zuph,º
an Ephrathite:ºº |
 1:2
And he [had] two wives; the name of the one [was] Hannah{gr.Anna}, and the name of the second Phennana. And Phennana had children, but Hannah{gr.Anna} had no child. |
|
 1:2
And he had twoº
wives;º
the nameº
of the oneº
[was] Hannah,º
and the nameº
of the otherº
Peninnah:º
and Peninnahº
hadº
children,º
but Hannahº
had noº
children.º |
 1:3
And the man went up from year to year from his city, from Armathaim, to worship and sacrifice to the Lord God of hosts{gr.Sabaoth} at Shelah{gr.Selom}: and [there were] Eli{gr.Heli} and his two sons Ophni and Phinehas{gr.Phinees}, the priests of the Lord. |
|
 1:3
And thisº
manº
went upºº
out of his cityºº
yearlyºº
to worshipºº
and to sacrificeºº
unto Yahwehº
Sabaothº
in Shiloh.º
And the twoº
sonsº
of Eli,º
Hophniº
and Phinehas,º
the priestsº
of Yahweh,º
[were] there.º |
 1:4 ¶
And the day came, and Elkanah{gr.Helkana} sacrificed, and gave portions to his wife Phennana and her children. |
|
 1:4 ¶
And when the timeº
wasº
that Elkanahº
offered,ºº
he gaveºº
to Peninnahº
his wife,º
and to allº
her sonsº
and her daughters,º
portions:º |
 1:5
And to Hannah{gr.Anna} he gave a prime portion, because she had no child, only Elkanah{gr.Helkana} loved Hannah{gr.Anna} more than the other; but the Lord [had] closed her womb. |
|
 1:5
But unto Hannahº
he gaveºº
aº
worthyº
portion;º
forº
he lovedººº
Hannah:º
but Yahwehº
had shut upºº
her womb.º |
 1:6
For the Lord gave her no child in her affliction, and according to the despondency of her affliction; and she was dispirited on this account, that the Lord shut up her womb so as not to give her a child. |
|
 1:6
And her adversaryº
alsoº
provokedºº
her sore,º
for toº
make her fret,ºº
becauseº
Yahwehº
had shutºº
upºº
her womb.º |
 1:7
So she did year by year, in going up to the house of the Lord; and she was dispirited, and wept, and did not eat. |
|
 1:7
And [as] he didºº
soº
yearº
by year,º
whenºº
she went upºº
to the houseºº
of Yahweh,º
soº
she provokedºº
her; therefore she wept,ºº
and did notº
eat.ºº |
 1:8
And Elkanah{gr.Helkana} her husband said to her, Hannah{gr.Anna}: and she said to him, Here [am] I, my lord: and he said to her, What ails thee that thou weepest? and why dost thou not eat? and why does thy heart smite thee? [am] I not better to thee than ten children? |
|
 1:8
Then saidºº
Elkanahº
her husbandº
to her, Hannah,º
whyº
weepestºº
thou? and whyº
eatestºº
thou not?º
and whyº
is thy heartº
grieved?ººº
[am] notº
Iº
betterº
to thee than tenºº
sons?º |
 1:9 ¶
And Hannah{gr.Anna} rose up after they had eaten in Shelah{gr.Selom}, and stood before the Lord: and Eli{gr.Heli} the priest [was] on a seat by the threshold of the temple of the Lord. |
|
 1:9 ¶
So Hannahº
rose upºº
afterº
they had eatenºº
in Shiloh,º
and afterº
they had drunk.ºº
Now Eliº
the priestº
satºº
uponº
a seatº
byº
a postº
of the templeº
of Yahweh.º |
 1:10
And she [was] very much grieved in spirit, and prayed to the Lord, and wept abundantly. |
|
 1:10
And sheº
[was] in bitternessº
of soul,º
and prayedºº
untoº
Yahweh,º
and weptºº
sore.ºº |
 1:11
And she vowed a vow to the Lord, saying, O Lord God of hosts{gr.Sabaoth}, if thou welt indeed look upon the humiliation of thine handmaid, and remember me, and give to thine handmaid a man-child, then will I indeed dedicate him to thee till the day of his death; and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink, and no razor shall come upon his head. |
|
 1:11
And she vowedºº
a vow,º
and said,ºº
O Yahwehº
Sabaoth,º
ifº
thou wilt indeedºº
lookºº
on the afflictionº
of thine handmaid,º
and rememberºº
me, and notº
forgetººº
thine handmaid,º
but wilt giveºº
unto thine handmaidº
a manºº
child,º
then I will giveºº
him unto Yahwehº
allº
the daysº
of his life,º
and there shall noº
razorº
comeºº
uponº
his head.º |
 1:12
And it came to pass, while she was long praying before the Lord, that Eli{gr.Heli} the priest marked her mouth. |
|
 1:12
And it came to pass,º
asº
she continuedºº
prayingºº
beforeº
Yahweh,º
that Eliº
markedººº
her mouth.º |
 1:13
And she was speaking in her heart, and her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: and Eli{gr.Heli} accounted her a drunken woman. |
|
 1:13
Now Hannah,º
sheº
spakeºº
inº
her heart;º
onlyº
her lipsº
moved,ºº
but her voiceº
was notº
heard:ºº
therefore Eliº
thoughtºº
she had been drunken.º |
 1:14
And the servant of Eli{gr.Heli} said to her, How long wilt thou be drunken? take away thy wine from thee, and go out from the presence of the Lord. |
|
 1:14
And Eliº
saidºº
untoº
her, Howº
longº
wilt thou be drunken?ºº
put awayººº
thy wineº
fromºº
thee. |
 1:15
And Hannah{gr.Anna} answered and said, Nay, my lord, [I live] in a hard day, and I have not drunk wine or strong drink, and I pour out my soul before the Lord. |
|
 1:15
And Hannahº
answeredºº
and said,ºº
No,º
my adon,º
I [am] a womanº
of a sorrowfulº
spirit:º
Iº
have drunkºº
neitherº
wineº
nor strong drink,º
but have poured outººº
my soulº
beforeº
Yahweh.º |
 1:16
Count not thy handmaid for a pestilent woman, for by reason of the abundance of my importunity I have continued [my prayer] until now. |
|
 1:16
Countºº
notºº
thine handmaidº
forº
a daughterº
of Belial:ºº
forº
out of the abundanceºº
of my complaintº
and griefº
have I spokenºº
hitherto.ºº |
 1:17
And Eli{gr.Heli} answered and said to her, Go in peace: the God of Israel give thee all thy petition, which thou hast asked of him. |
|
 1:17
Then Eliº
answeredºº
and said,ºº
Goººº
in peace:º
and the Elohimº
of Israelº
grantºº
[thee]º
thy petitionº
thatº
thou hast askedºº
ofºº
him. |
 1:18
And she said, Thine handmaid has found favour in thine eyes: and the woman went her way, and entered into her lodging, and ate and drank with her husband, and her countenance was no more sad. |
|
 1:18
And she said,ºº
Let thine handmaidº
findºº
graceº
in thy sight.º
So the womanº
wentººº
her way,º
and did eat,ºº
and her countenanceº
wasº
noº
moreº
[sad]. |
 1:19 ¶
And they rise early in the morning, and worship the Lord, and they go their way: and Elkanah{gr.Helkana} went into his house at Armathaim, and knew his wife Hannah{gr.Anna}; and the Lord remembered her, and she conceived. |
|
 1:19 ¶
And they rose upºº
in the morningº
early,ººº
and worshippedºº
beforeº
Yahweh,º
and returned,ºº
and cameºº
toº
their houseº
to Ramah:º
and Elkanahº
knewººº
Hannahº
his wife;º
and Yahwehº
rememberedºº
her. |
 1:20
And it came to pass when the time was come, that she brought forth a son, and called his name Samuel, and said, Because I asked him of the Lord God of hosts{gr.Sabaoth}. |
|
 1:20
Wherefore it came to pass,º
when the timeº
was comeº
about after Hannahº
had conceived,ºº
that she bareºº
a son,º
and calledººº
his nameº
Samuel,º
[saying], Becauseº
I have askedºº
him of Yahweh.ºº |
 1:21
And the man Elkanah{gr.Helkana} and all his house went up to offer in Shelah{gr.Selom} the yearly sacrifice, and his vows, and all the tithes of his land. |
|
 1:21
And the manº
Elkanah,º
and allº
his house,º
went upºº
to offerºº
unto Yahwehºº
the yearlyº
sacrifice,º
and his vow.º |
 1:22
But Hannah{gr.Anna} did not go up with him, for she said to her husband, [I will not go up] until the child goes up, when I have weaned him, and he shall be presented before the Lord, and he shall abide there continually. |
|
 1:22
But Hannahº
went not up;ººº
forº
she saidºº
unto her husband,º
[I will not go up] untilº
the childº
be weaned,ºº
and [then] I will bringºº
him, that he may appearººº
beforeº
Yahweh,º
and thereº
abideºº
forº
ever.ºº |
 1:23
And Elkanah{gr.Helkana} her husband said to her, Do that which is good in thine eyes, abide still until thou shalt have weaned him; but may the Lord establish that which comes out of thy mouth: and the woman tarried, and suckled her son until she had weaned him. |
|
 1:23
And Elkanahº
her husbandº
saidºº
unto her, Doºº
what seemethº
thee good;º
tarryºº
untilº
thou have weanedºº
him; onlyº
Yahwehº
establishººº
his word.º
So the womanº
abode,ºº
and gave her sonº
suckºººº
untilº
she weanedºº
him. |
 1:24 ¶
And she went up with him to Shelah{gr.Selom} with a calf of three years old, and loaves, and an ephah of fine flour, and a bottle of wine: and she entered into the house of the Lord in Shelah{gr.Selom}, and the child with them. |
|
 1:24 ¶
And whenº
she had weanedºº
him, she took him upºº
withº
her, with threeº
bullocks,º
and oneº
ephahº
of flour,º
and a bottleº
of wine,º
and broughtºº
him unto the houseº
of Yahwehº
in Shiloh:º
and the childº
[was] young.º |
 1:25
And they brought him before the Lord; and his father slew his offering which he offered from year to year to the Lord; and he brought near the child, and slew the calf; and Hannah{gr.Anna} the mother of the child brought him to Eli{gr.Heli}. |
|
 1:25
And they slewººº
a bullock,º
and broughtººº
the childº
toº
Eli.º |
 1:26
And she said, I pray thee, my lord, as thy soul liveth, I [am] the woman that stood in thy presence with thee while praying to the Lord. |
|
 1:26
And she said,ºº
Ohº
my adon,º
[as] thy soulº
liveth,º
my adon,º
Iº
[am] the womanº
that stoodºº
byº
thee here,º
prayingºº
untoº
Yahweh.º |
 1:27
For this child I prayed; and the Lord has given me my request that I asked of him. |
|
 1:27
Forº
thisº
childº
I prayed;ºº
and Yahwehº
hath givenºº
meº
my petitionº
whichº
I askedºº
ofºº
him: |
 1:28
And I lend him to the Lord all his days that he lives, a loan to the Lord: and she said, |
|
 1:28
Therefore alsoº
Iº
have lentºº
him to Yahweh;º
as longº
asº
he livethº
heº
shall beº
lentºº
to Yahweh.º
And he worshippedºº
Yahwehº
there.º |
