 5:1 ¶ And seeing the multitudes, he went up into the mountain: and when he had sat down, his disciples came unto him:

 5:1 ¶ Andº seeingºº theº multitudes,º he went upºº intoº a mountain:º andº when heº was set,ºº hisº disciplesº cameºº unto him:º

 5:2 and he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

 5:2 Andº he openedºº hisºº mouth,º and taughtºº them,º saying,ºº

 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

 5:3 Blessedº [are] theº poorº in spirit:º forº theirsº isºº theº kingdomº of heaven.º

 5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

 5:4 Blessedº [are] they that mourn:ºº forº theyº shall be comforted.ºº

 5:5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

 5:5 Blessedº [are] the meek:º forº theyº shall inheritºº theº earth.º

 5:6 Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

 5:6 Blessedº [are] they whichº do hungerºº andº thirstºº after righteousness:º forº theyº shall be filled.ºº

 5:7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

 5:7 Blessedº [are] theº merciful:º forº theyº shall obtain mercy.ºº

 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

 5:8 Blessedº [are] theº pureº in heart:º forº theyº shall seeºº God.º

 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called sons of God.

 5:9 Blessedº [are] theº peacemakers:º forº theyº shall be calledºº the childrenº of God.º

 5:10 Blessed are they that have been persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

 5:10 Blessedº [are] they which are persecutedºº forº righteousness' sake:ºº forº theirsº isºº theº kingdomº of heaven.º

 5:11 Blessed are ye when [men] shall reproach you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

 5:11 Blessedº areº ye,ºº whenº [men] shall revileºº you,º andº persecuteºº [you], andº shall sayºº all mannerº of evilººº againstº youº falsely,ºº for my sake.ºº

 5:12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets that were before you.

 5:12 Rejoice,ºº andº be exceeding glad:ºº forº greatº [is] yourº rewardº inº heaven:º forº soº persecutedº theyºº theº prophetsº whichº were beforeº you.º

 5:13 ¶ Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under foot of men.

 5:13 ¶ Yeº areºº theº saltº of theº earth:º butº ifº theº saltº have lost his savour,ºº wherewithºº shall it be salted?ºº it is thenceforthº goodºº forº nothing,º butº to be castºº out,º andº to be trodden under footºº ofº men.º

 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid.

 5:14 Yeº areºº theº lightº of theº world.º A cityº that is setºº onº an hillº cannotººº be hid.ºº

 5:15 Neither do [men] light a lamp, and put it under the bushel, but on the stand; and it shineth unto all that are in the house.

 5:15 Neitherº do men lightºº a candle,º andº putºº itº underº a bushel,º butº onº a candlestick;º andº it giveth lightºº unto allº thatº are inº theº house.º

 5:16 Even so let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

 5:16 Let yourº lightº soº shineºº beforeº men,º thatº they may seeºº yourº goodº works,º andº glorifyºº yourº Fatherº whichº is inº heaven.º

 5:17 ¶ Think not that I came to destroy the law or the prophets: I came not to destroy, but to fulfil.

 5:17 ¶ Thinkºº notº thatº I am comeºº to destroyºº theº law,º orº theº prophets:º I amºº notº comeºº to destroy,ºº butº to fulfil.ºº

 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass away from the law, till all things be accomplished.

 5:18 Forº verilyº I sayºº unto you,º Tillºº heavenº andº earthº pass,ºº oneº jotº orº oneº tittleº shall in no wiseº passºº fromº theº law,º tillºº allº be fulfilled.ºº

 5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

 5:19 Whosoeverºº thereforeº shall breakºº oneº of theseº leastº commandments,º andº shall teachºº menº so,º he shall be calledºº the leastº inº theº kingdomº of heaven:º butº whosoeverºº shall doºº andº teachºº [them], the sameº shall be calledºº greatº inº theº kingdomº of heaven.º

 5:20 For I say unto you, that except your righteousness shall exceed [the righteousness] of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven.

 5:20 Forº I sayºº unto you,º Thatº exceptº yourº righteousnessº shall exceedººº [the righteousness] of theº scribesº andº Pharisees,º ye shall in no caseº enterºº intoº theº kingdomº of heaven.º

 5:21 ¶ Ye have heard that it was said to them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:

 5:21 ¶ Ye have heardºº thatº it was saidºº by them of old time,º Thou shaltºº notº kill;ºº andº whosoeverºº shall killºº shall beºº in dangerº of theº judgment:º

 5:22 but I say unto you, that every one who is angry with his brother shall be in danger of the judgment; and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council; and whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of the hell of fire.

 5:22 Butº Iº sayºº unto you,º Thatº whosoeverº is angryºº with hisºº brotherº without a causeº shall beºº in dangerº of theº judgment:º andº whosoeverºº shall sayºº to hisºº brother,º Raca,º shall beºº in dangerº of theº council:º butº whosoeverºº shall say,ºº Thou fool,º shall beºº in dangerº ofº hellº fire.º

 5:23 If therefore thou art offering thy gift at the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath aught against thee,

 5:23 Thereforeº ifº thou bringºº thyº giftº toº theº altar,º and thereº rememberestºº thatº thyº brotherº hathºº oughtº againstº thee;º

 5:24 leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way, first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

 5:24 Leaveºº thereº thyº giftº beforeº theº altar,º andº go thy way;ºº firstº be reconciledºº to thyº brother,º andº thenº comeºº and offerºº thyº gift.º

 5:25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, while thou art with him in the way; lest haply the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

 5:25 Agreeºººº with thineº adversaryº quickly,º whilesºº thouº artºº inº theº wayº withº him;º lest at any timeº theº adversaryº deliverºº theeº to theº judge,º andº theº judgeº deliverºº theeº to theº officer,º andº thou be castºº intoº prison.º

 5:26 Verily I say unto thee, thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou have paid the last farthing.

 5:26 Verilyº I sayºº unto thee,º Thou shaltºº by no meansº comeºº outº thence,º tillºº thou hast paidºº theº uttermostº farthing.º

 5:27 ¶ Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt not commit adultery:

 5:27 ¶ Ye have heardºº thatº it was saidºº by them of old time,º Thou shaltºº notº commit adultery:ºº

 5:28 but I say unto you, that every one that looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

 5:28 Butº Iº sayºº unto you,º Thatº whosoeverº lookethºº on a womanº toº lustº afterºº herº hath committed adulteryºº with herº alreadyº inº hisºº heart.º

 5:29 And if thy right eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell.

 5:29 Andº ifº thyº rightº eyeº offendºº thee,º pluckºº itº out,ººº andº castºº [it] fromº thee:º forº it is profitableººº for theeº thatº oneº of thyº membersº should perish,ºº andº notº [that] thyº wholeº bodyº should be castºº intoº hell.º

 5:30 And if thy right hand causeth thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body go into hell.

 5:30 Andº ifº thyº rightº handº offendºº thee,º cutºº itº off,ººº andº castºº [it] fromº thee:º forº it is profitableºº for theeº thatº oneº of thyº membersº should perish,ºº andº notº [that] thyº wholeº bodyº should be castºº intoº hell.º

 5:31 It was said also, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:

 5:31 º Itº hath been said,ººº Whosoeverºº shall put awayºº hisºº wife,º let him giveºº herº a writing of divorcement:º

 5:32 but I say unto you, that every one that putteth away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, maketh her an adulteress: and whosoever shall marry her when she is put away committeth adultery.

 5:32 Butº Iº sayºº unto you,º Thatº whosoeverºº shall put awayºº hisºº wife,º savingº forº the causeº of fornication,º causethºº herº to commit adultery:ºº andº whosoeverºº shall marryºº her that is divorcedºº committeth adultery.ºº

 5:33 ¶ Again, ye have heard that it was said to them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:

 5:33 ¶ Again,º ye have heardºº thatº it hath been saidºº by them of old time,º Thou shaltºº notº forswearº thyself,ºº butº shalt performºº unto theº Lordº thineº oaths:º

 5:34 but I say unto you, swear not at all; neither by the heaven, for it is the throne of God;

 5:34 Butº Iº sayºº unto you,º Swearºº notº at all;º neitherº byº heaven;º forº it isºº God'sº throne:º

 5:35 nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.

 5:35 Norº byº theº earth;º forº it isºº hisº footstool:ºº neitherº byº Jerusalem;º forº it isºº the cityº of theº greatº King.º

 5:36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, for thou canst not make one hair white or black.

 5:36 Neitherº shalt thou swearºº byº thyº head,º becauseº thou canstºº notº makeºº oneº hairº whiteº orº black.º

 5:37 But let your speech be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: and whatsoever is more than these is of the evil [one].

 5:37 Butº letºº yourº communicationº be,ºº Yea,º yea;º Nay,º nay:º forº whatsoever is moreº than theseº comethºº ofº evil.º

 5:38 ¶ Ye have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:

 5:38 ¶ Ye have heardºº thatº it hath been said,ºº An eyeº forº an eye,º andº a toothº forº a tooth:º

 5:39 but I say unto you, resist not him that is evil: but whosoever smiteth thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

 5:39 Butº Iº sayºº unto you,º That ye resistºº notº evil:º butº whosoeverº shall smiteºº theeº onº thyº rightº cheek,º turnºº to himº theº otherº also.º

 5:40 And if any man would go to law with thee, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.

 5:40 Andº if any man willºº sueºº theeº at the law,ººº andº take awayºº thyº coat,º letºº himº haveºº [thy] clokeº also.º

 5:41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go one mile, go with him two.

 5:41 Andº whosoeverº shall compelºº theeº to goººº aº mile,º goºº withº himº twain.º

 5:42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

 5:42 Giveºº to him that askethºº thee,º andº from him that wouldºº borrowºº ofº theeº turnºº notº thou away.ººº

 5:43 ¶ Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy:

 5:43 ¶ Ye have heardºº thatº it hath been said,ºº Thou shalt loveºº thyº neighbour,º andº hateºº thineº enemy.º

 5:44 but I say unto you, love your enemies, and pray for them that persecute you;

 5:44 Butº Iº sayºº unto you,º Loveºº yourº enemies,º blessºº them that curseºº you,º doºº goodº to them that hateºº you,º andº prayºº forº them whichº despitefully useºº you,º andº persecuteºº you;º

 5:45 that ye may be sons of your Father who is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sendeth rain on the just and the unjust.

 5:45 Thatº ye may beºº the childrenº of yourº Fatherº whichº is inº heaven:º forº he makethºº hisºº sunº to riseºº onº the evilº andº on the good,º andº sendeth rainºº onº the justº andº on the unjust.º

 5:46 For if ye love them that love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

 5:46 Forº ifº ye loveºº them whichº loveºº you,º whatº rewardº haveº ye?ºº doºº notº evenº theº publicansº theº same?º

 5:47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more [than others]? do not even the Gentiles the same?

 5:47 Andº ifº ye saluteºº yourº brethrenº only,º whatº doºº ye moreº [than others]? doºº notº evenº theº publicansº so?º

 5:48 Ye therefore shall be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

 5:48 Beºº yeº thereforeº perfect,º evenº asº yourº Fatherº whichº is inº heavenº isºº perfect.º
