 23:1 ¶ Then spake Jesus to the multitudes and to his disciples,

 23:1 ¶ Thenº spakeºº Jesusº to theº multitude,º andº to hisºº disciples,º

 23:2 saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses seat:

 23:2 Saying,ºº Theº scribesº andº theº Phariseesº sitºº inº Moses'º seat:º

 23:3 all things therefore whatsoever they bid you, [these] do and observe: but do not ye after their works; for they say, and do not.

 23:3 Allº thereforeº whatsoeverºº they bidºº youº observe,ºº [that] observeºº andº do;ºº butº doºº notº ye afterº theirº works:º forº they say,ºº andº doºº not.º

 23:4 Yea, they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with their finger.

 23:4 Forº they bindºº heavyº burdensº andº grievous to be borne,º andº layºº [them] onº men'sº shoulders;º butº they [themselves] willºº notº moveºº themº with one of theirºº fingers.º

 23:5 But all their works they do to be seen of men: for they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders [of their garments],

 23:5 Butº allº theirºº worksº they doºº forº to be seenºº of men:ºº theyº make broadºº theirºº phylacteries,º andº enlargeºº theº bordersº of theirºº garments,º

 23:6 and love the chief place at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,

 23:6 Andº loveºº theº uppermost roomsº atº feasts,º andº theº chief seatsº inº theº synagogues,º

 23:7 and the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called of men, Rabbi.

 23:7 Andº greetingsº inº theº markets,º andº to be calledºº ofº men,º Rabbi,º Rabbi.º

 23:8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your teacher, and all ye are brethren.

 23:8 Butº beºº notº yeº calledºº Rabbi:º forº oneº isºº yourº Master,º [even] Christ;º andº allº yeº areºº brethren.º

 23:9 And call no man your father on the earth: for one is your Father, [even] he who is in heaven.

 23:9 Andº callºº noº [man] yourº fatherº uponº theº earth:º forº oneº isºº yourº Father,º whichº is inº heaven.º

 23:10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your master, [even] the Christ.

 23:10 Neitherº be ye calledºº masters:º forº oneº isºº yourº Master,º [even] Christ.º

 23:11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.

 23:11 Butº he that is greatestº among youº shall beºº yourº servant.º

 23:12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled; and whosoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.

 23:12 Andº whosoeverº shall exaltºº himselfº shall be abased;ºº andº heº that shall humbleºº himselfº shall be exalted.ºº

 23:13 ¶ But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye enter not in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering in to enter.

 23:13 ¶ Butº woeº unto you,º scribesº andº Pharisees,º hypocrites!º forº ye shut upºº theº kingdomº of heavenº againstº men:º forº yeº neitherºº go inºº [yourselves], neitherºº sufferº yeºº them that are enteringºº to go in.ºº

 23:14 [Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, even while for a pretence ye make long prayers: therefore ye shall receive greater condemnation.]

 23:14 º Woeº unto you,º scribesº andº Pharisees,º hypocrites!º forº ye devourºº widows'º houses,º andº for a pretenceº makeºº longº prayer:ººº thereforeºº ye shall receiveºº the greaterºº damnation.º

 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he is become so, ye make him twofold more a son of hell than yourselves.

 23:15 Woeº unto you,º scribesº andº Pharisees,º hypocrites!º forº ye compassºº seaº andº landº to makeºº oneº proselyte,º andº whenº he is made,ºº ye makeºº himº twofold moreº the childº of hellº than yourselves.º

 23:16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, that say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor.

 23:16 Woeº unto you,º [ye] blindº guides,º whichº say,ºº Whosoeverºº shall swearºº byº theº temple,º it isºº nothing;º butº whosoeverºº shall swearºº byº theº goldº of theº temple,º he is a debtor!ºº

 23:17 Ye fools and blind: for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that hath sanctified the gold?

 23:17 [Ye] foolsº andº blind:º forº whetherº isºº greater,º theº gold,º orº theº templeº that sanctifiethºº theº gold?º

 23:18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gift that is upon it, he is a debtor.

 23:18 And,º Whosoeverºº shall swearºº byº theº altar,º it isºº nothing;º butº whosoeverºº swearethºº byº theº giftº thatº is uponº it,º he is guilty.ºº

 23:19 Ye blind: for which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?

 23:19 [Ye] foolsº andº blind:º forº whetherº [is] greater,º theº gift,º orº theº altarº that sanctifiethºº theº gift?º

 23:20 He therefore that sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.

 23:20 Whoso thereforeº shall swearººº byº theº altar,º swearethºº byº it,º andº byº all thingsº thereon.ºº

 23:21 And he that sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.

 23:21 Andº whoso shall swearºº byº theº temple,º swearethºº byº it,º andº byº him that dwellethºº therein.ºº

 23:22 And he that sweareth by the heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.

 23:22 Andº he that shall swearºº byº heaven,º swearethºº byº theº throneº of God,º andº byº him that sittethºº thereon.ºº

 23:23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye tithe mint and anise and cummin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law, justice, and mercy, and faith: but these ye ought to have done, and not to have left the other undone.

 23:23 Woeº unto you,º scribesº andº Pharisees,º hypocrites!º forºº ye pay titheºº of mintº andº aniseº andº cummin,º andº have omittedºº theº weightierº [matters] of theº law,º judgment,ºº mercy,º andº faith:º theseº oughtº yeºº to have done,ºº and notº to leaveºº the otherº undone.ºº

 23:24 Ye blind guides, that strain out the gnat, and swallow the camel!

 23:24 [Ye] blindº guides,º which strainº atºº a gnat,º andº swallowºº a camel.º

 23:25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full from extortion and excess.

 23:25 Woeº unto you,º scribesº andº Pharisees,º hypocrites!º forº ye make cleanºº theº outsideº of theº cupº andº of theº platter,º butº withinº they are fullºº ofº extortionº andº excess.º

 23:26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup and of the platter, that the outside thereof may become clean also.

 23:26 [Thou] blindº Pharisee,º cleanseºº firstº thatº [which is] withinº theº cupº andº platter,º thatº theº outsideº of themº may beºº cleanº also.º

 23:27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.

 23:27 Woeº unto you,º scribesº andº Pharisees,º hypocrites!º forº ye are likeºº untoº whitedºº sepulchres,º whichº indeedº appearºº beautifulº outward,º butº are withinº fullººº of deadº [men's] bones,º andº of allº uncleanness.º

 23:28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but inwardly ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

 23:28 Even soº yeº alsoºº outwardlyºº appearºº righteousº unto men,º butº withinº ye areºº fullº of hypocrisyº andº iniquity.º

 23:29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and garnish the tombs of the righteous,

 23:29 Woeº unto you,º scribesº andº Pharisees,º hypocrites!º becauseº ye buildºº theº tombsº of theº prophets,º andº garnishºº theº sepulchresº of theº righteous,º

 23:30 and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we should not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

 23:30 Andº say,ºº Ifº we had beenºº inº theº daysº of ourº fathers,º we wouldº notº have beenººº partakersº with themº inº theº bloodº of theº prophets.º

 23:31 Wherefore ye witness to yourselves, that ye are sons of them that slew the prophets.

 23:31 Whereforeº ye be witnessesºº unto yourselves,º thatº ye areºº the childrenº of them which killedºº theº prophets.º

 23:32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.

 23:32 Fillºº yeº upººº thenº theº measureº of yourº fathers.º

 23:33 Ye serpents, ye offspring of vipers, how shall ye escape the judgment of hell?

 23:33 [Ye] serpents,º [ye] generationº of vipers,º howº can yeºº escapeºº theº damnationº of hell?º

 23:34 ¶ Therefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: some of them shall ye kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city:

 23:34 ¶ Wherefore,ºº behold,ºº Iº sendºº untoº youº prophets,º andº wise men,º andº scribes:º andº [some] ofº themº ye shall killºº andº crucify;ºº andº [some] ofº themº shall ye scourgeºº inº yourº synagogues,º andº persecuteºº [them] fromº cityº toº city:º

 23:35 that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of Abel the righteous unto the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar.

 23:35 Thatº uponº youº may comeºº allº the righteousº bloodº shedºº uponº theº earth,º fromº theº bloodº of righteousº Abelº untoº theº bloodº of Zachariasº sonº of Barachias,º whomº ye slewºº betweenº theº templeº andº theº altar.º

 23:36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

 23:36 Verilyº I sayºº unto you,º Allº these thingsº shall comeºº uponº thisº generation.º

 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killeth the prophets, and stoneth them that are sent unto her! how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

 23:37 O Jerusalem,º Jerusalem,º [thou] that killestºº theº prophets,º andº stonestºº them which are sentºº untoº thee,º how oftenº wouldº Iºº have gatheredºº thyºº childrenº together,ºººº even asºº a henº gatherethºº herº chickensº underº [her] wings,º andº ye wouldºº not!º

 23:38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

 23:38 Behold,ºº yourº houseº is leftºº unto youº desolate.º

 23:39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed [is] he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

 23:39 Forº I sayºº unto you,º Ye shallºº notº seeºº meº henceforth,ºº tillºº ye shall say,ºº Blessedºº [is] he that comethºº inº the nameº of the Lord.º
