2 Kings 18

1 Hezekiah his good reign. 4 He destroyeth idolatry, and prospereth. 9 Samaria is carried captive for their sins. 13 Sennacherib invading Judah is pacified by a tribute. 17 Rab-shakeh, sent by Sennacherib again, revileth Hezekiah, and by blasphemous persuasions soliciteth the people to revolt.

 18:1 Now it came 1961 about in the third 7969 year 8141 of Hoshea 1954, the son 1121 of Elah 425 king 4428 of Israel 3478, that Hezekiah 2396 the son 1121 of Ahaz 271 king 4428 of Judah 3063 became 4427a king 4427a.

 18:2 He was twenty-five 6242 2568 years 8141 old 1121 when he became 4427a king 4427a, and he reigned 4427a twenty-nine 6242 8672 years 8141 in Jerusalem 3389; and his mother’s 517 name 8034 was Abi 21 the daughter 1323 of Zechariah 2148a.

 18:3 He did 6213a right 3477 in the sight 5869 of the LORD 3068, according to all 3605 that his father 1 David 1732 had done 6213a.

 18:4 He removed 5493 the high 1116 places 1116 and broke 7665 down 7665 the [sacred] pillars 4676 and cut 3772 down 3772 the Asherah 842. He also broke 3807 in pieces 3807 the bronze 5178 serpent 5175 that Moses 4872 had made 6213a, for until 5704 those 1992a days 3117 the sons 1121 of Israel 3478 burned 6999 incense 6999 to it; and it was called 7121 Nehushtan 5180.

 18:5 He trusted 982 in the LORD 3068, the God 430 of Israel 3478; so that after 310 him there was none 3808 like 3644 him among all 3605 the kings 4428 of Judah 3063, nor 3808 [among those] who 834 were before 6440 him.

 18:6 For he clung 1692 to the LORD 3068; he did not depart 5493 from following 310 Him, but kept 8104 His commandments 4687, which 834 the LORD 3068 had commanded 6680 Moses 4872.

 18:7 And the LORD 3068 was with him; wherever 3605 834 he went 3318 he prospered 7919a. And he rebelled 4775 against the king 4428 of Assyria 804b and did not serve 5647 him.

 18:8 He defeated 5221 the Philistines 6430 as far 5704 as Gaza 5804a and its territory 1366, from watchtower 4026 to fortified 4013 city 5892b.

 18:9 ¶ Now in the fourth 7243 year 8141 of King 4428 Hezekiah 2396, which 1931 was the seventh 7637 year 8141 of Hoshea 1954 son 1121 of Elah 425 king 4428 of Israel 3478, Shalmaneser 8022 king 4428 of Assyria 804b came 5927 up against 5921 Samaria 8111 and besieged 6696a 5921 it.

 18:10 At the end 7097a of three 7969 years 8141 they captured 3920 it; in the sixth 8337a year 8141 of Hezekiah 2396, which 1931 was the ninth 8672 year 8141 of Hoshea 1954 king 4428 of Israel 3478, Samaria 8111 was captured 3920.

 18:11 Then the king 4428 of Assyria 804b carried 1540 Israel 3478 away 1540 into exile 1540 to Assyria 804b, and put 5148 them in Halah 2477 and on the Habor 2249, the river 5104 of Gozan 1470, and in the cities 5892b of the Medes 4074,

 18:12 because 5921 834 they did not obey 8085 the voice 6963 of the LORD 3068 their God 430, but transgressed 5674a His covenant 1285, [even] all 3605 that Moses 4872 the servant 5650 of the LORD 3068 commanded 6680; they would neither 3808 listen 8085 nor 3808 do 6213a [it].

 18:13 ¶ Now in the fourteenth 702 6240 year 8141 of King 4428 Hezekiah 2396, Sennacherib 5576 king 4428 of Assyria 804b came 5927 up against 5921 all 3605 the fortified 1219 cities 5892b of Judah 3063 and seized 8610 them.

 18:14 Then Hezekiah 2396 king 4428 of Judah 3063 sent 7971 to the king 4428 of Assyria 804b at Lachish 3923, saying 559, “I have done 2398 wrong 2398. Withdraw 7725 from me; whatever 834 you impose 5414 on me I will bear 5375.” So the king 4428 of Assyria 804b required 7760 of Hezekiah 2396 king 4428 of Judah 3063 three 7969 hundred 3967 talents 3603 of silver 3701 and thirty 7970 talents 3603 of gold 2091.

 18:15 Hezekiah 2396 gave 5414 [him] all 3605 the silver 3701 which was found 4672 in the house 1004 of the LORD 3068, and in the treasuries 214 of the king’s 4428 house 1004.

 18:16 At that time 6256 Hezekiah 2396 cut 7112 off 7112 [the gold from] the doors 1817 of the temple 1964 of the LORD 3068, and [from] the doorposts 539 which 834 Hezekiah 2396 king 4428 of Judah 3063 had overlaid 6823, and gave 5414 it to the king 4428 of Assyria 804b.

 18:17 ¶ Then the king 4428 of Assyria 804b sent 7971 Tartan 8661 and Rab-saris 7249 and Rabshakeh 7262 from Lachish 3923 to King 4428 Hezekiah 2396 with a large 3515 army 2428 to Jerusalem 3389. So they went 5927 up and came 935 to Jerusalem 3389. And when they went 5927 up, they came 935 and stood 5975 by the conduit 8585a of the upper 5945a pool 1295, which 834 is on the highway 4546 of the fuller’s 3526 field 7704.

 18:18 When they called 7121 to the king 4428, Eliakim 471 the son 1121 of Hilkiah 2518, who 834 was over 5921 the household 1004, and Shebnah 7644 the scribe 5613b and Joah 3098 the son 1121 of Asaph 623 the recorder 2142, came 3318 out to them.

 18:19 ¶ Then Rabshakeh 7262 said 559 to them, “Say 559 now 4994 to Hezekiah 2396, ‘Thus 3541 says 559 the great 1419 king 4428, the king 4428 of Assyria 804b, “What 4100 is this 2088 confidence 986 that you have 982?

 18:20 “You say 559 (but [they are] only 389 empty 8193 words 1697), ‘[I have] counsel 6098 and strength 1369 for the war 4421.’ Now 6258 on whom 4310 do you rely 982, that you have rebelled 4775 against me?

 18:21 “Now 6258 behold 2009, you rely 982 on the staff 4938b of this 2088 crushed 7533 reed 7070, [even] on Egypt 4714; on which 834 if a man 376 leans 5564, it will go 935 into his hand 3709 and pierce 5344a it. So 3651 is Pharaoh 6547 king 4428 of Egypt 4714 to all 3605 who rely 982 on him.

 18:22 “But if 3588 you say 559 to me, ‘We trust 982 in the LORD 3068 our God 430,’ is it not He whose 834 high 1116 places 1116 and whose altars 4196 Hezekiah 2396 has taken 5493 away 5493, and has said 559 to Judah 3063 and to Jerusalem 3389, ‘You shall worship 7812 before 6440 this 2088 altar 4196 in Jerusalem 3389’?

 18:23 “Now 6258 therefore, come 4994, make 6148 a bargain 6148 with my master 113 the king 4428 of Assyria 804b, and I will give 5414 you two thousand 505 horses 5483b, if 518 you are able 3201 on your part to set 5414 riders 7392 on them.

 18:24 “How 349 then can you repulse 7725 6440 one 259 official 6346 of the least 6996a of my master’s 113 servants 5650, and rely 982 on Egypt 4714 for chariots 7393 and for horsemen 6571b?

 18:25 “Have I now 6258 come 5927 up without 1107 the LORD’S 3068 approval against 5921 this 2088 place 4725 to destroy 7843 it? The LORD 3068 said 559 to me, ‘Go 5927 up against 5921 this 2088 land 776 and destroy 7843 it.’”’”

 18:26 ¶ Then Eliakim 471 the son 1121 of Hilkiah 2518, and Shebnah 7644 and Joah 3098, said 559 to Rabshakeh 7262, “Speak 1696 now 4994 to your servants 5650 in Aramaic 762, for we understand 8085 [it]; and do not speak 1696 with us in Judean 3066 in the hearing 241 of the people 5971a who 834 are on the wall 2346.”

 18:27 But Rabshakeh 7262 said 559 to them, “Has my master 113 sent 7971 me only to your master 113 and to you to speak 1696 these 428 words 1697, [and] not to the men 376 who sit 3427 on the wall 2346, [doomed] to eat 398 their own dung 2716 and drink 8354 their own urine 7890 with you?”

 18:28 ¶ Then Rabshakeh 7262 stood 5975 and cried 7121 with a loud 1419 voice 6963 in Judean 3066, saying 1696 559, “Hear 8085 the word 1697 of the great 1419 king 4428, the king 4428 of Assyria 804b.

 18:29 “Thus 3541 says 559 the king 4428, ‘Do not let Hezekiah 2396 deceive 5378 you, for he will not be able 3201 to deliver 5337 you from my hand 3027;

 18:30 nor 408 let Hezekiah 2396 make you trust 982 in the LORD 3068, saying 559, “The LORD 3068 will surely 5337 deliver 5337 us, and this 2088 city 5892b will not be given 5414 into the hand 3027 of the king 4428 of Assyria 804b.”

 18:31 ‘Do not listen 8085 to Hezekiah 2396, for thus 3541 says 559 the king 4428 of Assyria 804b, “Make 6213a your peace 1293 with me and come 3318 out to me, and eat 398 each 376 of his vine 1612 and each 376 of his fig 8384 tree 8384 and drink 8354 each 376 of the waters 4325 of his own cistern 953a,

 18:32 until 5704 I come 935 and take 3947 you away to a land 776 like your own land 776, a land 776 of grain 1715 and new 8492 wine 8492, a land 776 of bread 3899 and vineyards 3754, a land 776 of olive 2132 trees 2132 and honey 1706, that you may live 2421a and not die 4191.” But do not listen 8085 to Hezekiah 2396 when 3588 he misleads 5496 you, saying 559, “The LORD 3068 will deliver 5337 us.”

 18:33 ‘Has any 376 one 376 of the gods 430 of the nations 1471 delivered 5337 his land 776 from the hand 3027 of the king 4428 of Assyria 804b?

 18:34 ‘Where 346 are the gods 430 of Hamath 2574 and Arpad 774? Where 346 are the gods 430 of Sepharvaim 5617, Hena 2012 and Ivvah 5755? Have they delivered 5337 Samaria 8111 from my hand 3027?

 18:35 ‘Who 4310 among all 3605 the gods 430 of the lands 776 have delivered 5337 their land 776 from my hand 3027, that the LORD 3068 should deliver 5337 Jerusalem 3389 from my hand 3027?’”

 18:36 ¶ But the people 5971a were silent 2790b and answered 6030a him not a word 1697, for the king’s 4428 commandment 4687 was, “Do not answer 6030a him.”

 18:37 Then Eliakim 471 the son 1121 of Hilkiah 2518, who 834 was over 5921 the household 1004, and Shebna 7644 the scribe 5613b and Joah 3098 the son 1121 of Asaph 623, the recorder 2142, came 935 to Hezekiah 2396 with their clothes 899b torn 7167 and told 5046 him the words 1697 of Rabshakeh 7262.
