 21:1 ¶
And Arad the Canaanitish{gr.Chananitish} king who dwelt by the wilderness, heard that Israel came by the way of Atharin; and he made war on Israel, and carried off some of them captives. |
|
 21:1 ¶
And [when] kingº
Aradº
the Canaanite,º
which dweltºº
in the south,º
heardºº
tellº
thatº
Israelº
cameºº
by the wayº
of the spies;º
then he foughtºº
against Israel,º
and tookºº
[some] ofº
them prisoners.º |
 21:2
And Israel vowed a vow to the Lord, and said, If thou wilt deliver this people into my power, I will devote it and its cities [to thee]. |
 21:2
And Israelº
vowedºº
a vowº
unto Yahweh,º
and said,ºº
Ifº
thou wilt indeedºº
deliverººº
thisº
peopleº
into my hand,º
then I will utterly destroyººº
their cities.º |
 21:3
And the Lord hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered the Canaanite{gr.Chananite} into his power; and [Israel] devoted him and his cities, and they called the name of that place Anathema. |
 21:3
And Yahwehº
hearkenedºº
to the voiceº
of Israel,º
and delivered upººº
the Canaanites;º
and they utterly destroyedºº
them and their cities:º
and he calledºº
the nameº
of the placeº
Hormah.º |
 21:4 ¶
And having departed from mount Or by the way [leading] to the Red Sea, they compassed the land of Edom, and the people lost courage by the way. |
 21:4 ¶
And they journeyedºº
from mountº
Horºº
by the wayº
of the Redº
sea,º
to compassººº
the landº
of Edom:º
and the soulº
of the peopleº
was much discouragedºº
because of the way.º |
 21:5
And the people spoke against God and against Mosheh{gr.Moses}, saying, Why is this? Hast thou brought us ought of Mizraim{gr.Egypt} to slay us in the wilderness? for there is not bread nor water; and our soul loathes this light bread. |
 21:5
And the peopleº
spakeºº
against Elohim,º
and against Moses,º
Whereforeº
have ye brought us upºº
out of Egyptºº
to dieºº
in the wilderness?º
forº
[there is] noº
bread,º
neitherº
[is there any] water;º
and our soulº
loathethºº
this lightº
bread.º |
 21:6
And the Lord sent among the people deadly serpents, and they bit the people, and much people of the children of Israel died. |
 21:6
And Yahwehº
sentººº
fieryº
serpentsº
among the people,º
and they bitººº
the people;º
and muchº
peopleº
of Israelºº
died.ºº |
 21:7 ¶
And the people came to Mosheh{gr.Moses} and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord, and against thee: pray therefore to the Lord, and let him take away the serpent from us. |
 21:7 ¶
Therefore the peopleº
cameºº
toº
Moses,º
and said,ºº
We have sinned,ºº
forº
we have spokenºº
against Yahweh,º
and against thee; prayºº
untoº
Yahweh,º
that he take awayººº
the serpentsº
fromºº
us. And Mosesº
prayedºº
forº
the people.º |
 21:8
And Mosheh{gr.Moses} prayed to the Lord for the people; and the Lord said to Mosheh{gr.Moses}, Make thee a serpent, and put it on a signal-[staff]; and it shall come to pass that whenever a serpent shall bite a man, every one [so] bitten that looks upon it shall live. |
 21:8
And Yahwehº
saidºº
untoº
Moses,º
Makeºº
thee a fiery serpent,º
and setºº
it uponº
a pole:º
and it shall come to pass,º
that every oneº
that is bitten,ºº
when he lookethºº
uponº
it, shall live.ºº |
 21:9
And Mosheh{gr.Moses} made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a signal-[staff]: and it came to pass that whenever a serpent bit a man, and he looked on the brazen serpent, he lived. |
 21:9
And Mosesº
madeºº
a serpentº
of brass,º
and putºº
it uponº
a pole,º
and it came to pass,º
that ifº
a serpentº
had bittenººº
any man,º
when he beheldººº
the serpentº
of brass,º
he lived.ºº |
 21:10 ¶
And the children of Israel departed, and encamped in Oboth. |
 21:10 ¶
And the childrenº
of Israelº
set forward,ºº
and pitchedºº
in Oboth.º |
 21:11
And having departed from Oboth, they encamped in Achalgai, on the farther side in the wilderness, which is opposite Moab, toward the east. |
 21:11
And they journeyedºº
from Oboth,ºº
and pitchedºº
at Ijeabarim,º
in the wildernessº
whichº
[is] beforeºº
Moab,º
toward the sunrising.ººº |
 21:12 ¶
And thence they departed, and encamped in the valley of Zared. |
 21:12 ¶
From thenceºº
they removed,ºº
and pitchedºº
in the valleyº
of Zared.º |
 21:13
And they departed thence and encamped on the other side of Arnon in the wilderness, [the country] which extends from the coasts of the Amorites; for Arnon is the borders of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. |
 21:13
From thenceºº
they removed,ºº
and pitchedºº
on the other sideºº
of Arnon,º
whichº
[is] in the wildernessº
that cometh outºº
of the coastsºº
of the Amorites:º
forº
Arnonº
[is] the borderº
of Moab,º
betweenº
Moabº
and the Amorites.º |
 21:14
Therefore it is said in a book, A war of the Lord has set on fire Zoob, and the brooks of Arnon. |
 21:14
Whereforeºº
it is saidºº
in the bookº
of the warsº
of Yahweh,ºº
What he didº
in the Red sea,º
and in the brooksº
of Arnon,º |
 21:15
And he has appointed brooks to cause Er to dwell [there]; and it lies near to the coasts of Moab. |
 21:15
And at the streamº
of the brooksº
thatº
goeth downºº
to the dwellingººº
of Ar,º
and liethºº
upon the borderº
of Moab.º |
 21:16
And thence [they came to] the well; this [is] the well of which the Lord said to Mosheh{gr.Moses}, Gather the people, and I will give them water to drink. |
 21:16
And from thenceºº
[they went] to Beer:º
thatº
[is] the wellº
whereofº
Yahwehº
spakeºº
unto Moses,º
Gatherºº
the peopleº
together,ºººº
and I will giveºº
them water.º |
 21:17 ¶
Then Israel sang this song at the well, Begin [to sing] of the well; |
 21:17 ¶
Thenº
Israelº
sangººº
thisº
song,º
Spring up,ºº
O well;º
singºº
ye unto it: |
 21:18
the princes digged it, the kings of the nations in their kingdom, in their lordship sank it in the rock: and [they went] from the well to Manthanain, |
 21:18
The princesº
diggedºº
the well,º
the noblesº
of the peopleº
diggedºº
it, by [the direction of] the lawgiver,ºº
with their staves.º
And from the wildernessºº
[they went] to Mattanah:º |
 21:19
and from Manthanain to Naaliel, and from Naaliel to Bamoth, and from Bamoth to Janen, which is in the plain of Moab [as seen] from the top of the quarried [rock] that looks toward the wilderness. |
 21:19
And from Mattanahºº
to Nahaliel:º
and from Nahalielºº
to Bamoth:º |
 21:20
And Mosheh{gr.Moses} sent ambassadors to Sihon{gr.Seon} king of the Amorites, with peaceable words, saying, |
 21:20
And from Bamothºº
[in] the valley,º
thatº
[is] in the countryº
of Moab,º
to the topº
of Pisgah,º
which lookethºº
towardºº
Jeshimon.º |
 21:21 ¶
We will pass through thy land, we will go by the road; we will not turn aside to the field or to the vineyard. |
 21:21 ¶
And Israelº
sentºº
messengersº
untoº
Sihonº
kingº
of the Amorites,º
saying,ºº |
 21:22
We will not drink water out of thy well; we will go by the king's highway, until we have past thy boundaries. |
 21:22
Let me passºº
through thy land:º
we will notº
turnºº
into the fields,º
or into the vineyards;º
we will notº
drinkºº
[of] the watersº
of the well:º
[but] we will go alongººº
by the king'sº
[high] way,º
untilºº
we be pastºº
thy borders.º |
 21:23
And Sihon{gr.Seon} did not allow Israel to pass through his borders, and Sihon{gr.Seon} gathered all his people, and went out to set the battle in array against Israel into the wilderness; and he came to Jassa, and set the battle in array against Israel. |
 21:23
And Sihonº
would notº
sufferººº
Israelº
to passºº
through his border:º
but Sihonº
gatheredºº
all his peopleº
together,ººººº
and went outºº
againstºº
Israelº
into the wilderness:º
and he cameºº
to Jahaz,º
and foughtºº
against Israel.º |
 21:24
And Israel smote him with the slaughter of the sword, and they became possessors of his land, from Arnon to Jaboc, as far as the children of Ammon{gr.Amman}, for Jazer is the borders of the children of Ammon{gr.Amman}. |
 21:24
And Israelº
smoteºº
him with the edgeº
of the sword,º
and possessedººº
his landº
from Arnonºº
untoº
Jabbok,º
even untoº
the childrenº
of Ammon:º
forº
the borderº
of the childrenº
of Ammonº
[was] strong.º |
 21:25
And Israel took all their cities, and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon{gr.Esebon}, and in all cities belonging to it. |
 21:25
And Israelº
tookººº
allº
theseº
cities:º
and Israelº
dweltºº
in allº
the citiesº
of the Amorites,º
in Heshbon,º
and in allº
the villagesº
thereof. |
 21:26
For Heshbon{gr.Esebon} is the city of Sihon{gr.Seon} king of the Amorites; and he before fought against the king of Moab, and they took all his land, from Aroer to Arnon. |
 21:26
Forº
Heshbonº
[was] the cityº
of Sihonº
the kingº
of the Amorites,º
whoº
had foughtºº
against the formerº
kingº
of Moab,º
and takenººº
allº
his landº
out of his hand,ºº
even untoº
Arnon.º |
 21:27
Therefore say they who deal in dark speeches, Come to Heshbon{gr.Esebon}, that the city of Sihon{gr.Seon} may be built and prepared. |
 21:27
Whereforeºº
they that speak in proverbsºº
say,ºº
Comeºº
into Heshbon,º
let the cityº
of Sihonº
be builtºº
and prepared:ºº |
 21:28
For a fire has gone forth from Heshbon{gr.Esebon}, a flame from the city of Sihon{gr.Seon}, and has consumed as far as Moab, and devoured the pillars of Arnon. |
 21:28
Forº
there is a fireº
gone outºº
of Heshbon,ºº
a flameº
from the cityºº
of Sihon:º
it hath consumedºº
Arº
of Moab,º
[and] the lordsº
of the high placesºº
of Arnon.º |
 21:29
Woe to thee, Moab; thou art lost, thou people of Chemosh{gr.Chamos}: their sons are sold for preservation, and their daughters are captives to Sihon{gr.Seon} king of the Amorites. |
 21:29
Woeº
to thee, Moab!º
thou art undone,ºº
O peopleº
of Chemosh:º
he hath givenºº
his sonsº
that escaped,º
and his daughters,º
into captivityºº
unto Sihonº
kingº
of the Amorites.º |
 21:30
And their seed shall perish [from] Heshbon{gr.Esebon} to Dibon{gr.Daebon}; and their women have yet farther kindled a fire against Moab. |
 21:30
We have shotºº
at them; Heshbonº
is perishedºº
even untoº
Dibon,º
and we have laid them wasteºº
even untoº
Nophah,º
whichº
[reacheth] untoº
Medeba.º |
 21:31 ¶
And Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites. |
 21:31 ¶
Thus Israelº
dweltºº
in the landº
of the Amorites.º |
 21:32
And Mosheh{gr.Moses} sent to spy out Jazer; and they took it, and its villages, and cast out the Amorite that dwelt there. |
 21:32
And Mosesº
sentºº
to spy outººº
Jaazer,º
and they tookºº
the villagesº
thereof, and drove outººººº
the Amoritesº
thatº
[were] there.º |
 21:33 ¶
And having returned, they went up the road that leads to Bashan{gr.Basan}; and Og the king of Bashan{gr.Basan} went forth to meet them, and all his people to war to Edrain. |
 21:33 ¶
And they turnedºº
and went upºº
by the wayº
of Bashan:º
and Ogº
the kingº
of Bashanº
went outºº
againstºº
them, he,º
and allº
his people,º
to the battleº
at Edrei.º |
 21:34
And the Lord said to Mosheh{gr.Moses}, Fear him not; for I have delivered him and all his people, and all his land, into thy hands; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst to Sihon{gr.Seon} king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon{gr.Esebon}. |
 21:34
And Yahwehº
saidºº
untoº
Moses,º
Fearºº
him not:º
forº
I have deliveredºº
him into thy hand,º
and allº
his people,º
and his land;º
and thou shalt doºº
to him asº
thou didstºº
unto Sihonº
kingº
of the Amorites,º
whichº
dweltºº
at Heshbon.º |
 21:35
And he smote him and his sons, and all his people, until he left none of his to be taken alive; and they inherited his land. |
 21:35
So they smoteºº
him, and his sons,º
and allº
his people,º
untilº
there was noneº
leftºº
him alive:º
and they possessedººº
his land.º |
