23:1
Then Jeshu discoursed with the multitudes and with his disciples, |
|
23:1
Then Jesus conversed with the multitude and with his disciples, |
23:2
and said to them, Upon the chair of Musha sit the scribes and the Pharishee. |
|
23:2
and said to them: The Scribes and Pharisees sit in the seat of Moses. |
23:3
Every thing, therefore, which they tell you to observe, observe and do; but after their practices do not act; for they say, and do not. |
|
23:3
Whatever therefore they tell you to observe, that observe and do. But according to their deeds, practise ye not: for they say, and do not. |
23:4
And they bind heavy burdens, and lay them on the shoulders of men, but they [themselves] with their fingers are not willing to touch them. |
|
23:4
They tie up heavy burdens, and lay [them] on men's shoulders; but will not themselves touch them with their finger. |
23:5
And all their works they do that they may be seen of men; for they widen their tephillin, and lengthen the fringes of their waving vestments, |
|
23:5
And all their works they do, to be seen of men: for they make their phylacteries broad, and extend the fringes of their garments. |
23:6
and love the chief reclining-places at evening feasts, and the highest seats in synagogues, |
|
23:6
And they love the highest couches at suppers and the highest seats in the synagogues, |
23:7
and the shaloma in public places, and to be called of men Rābi. |
|
23:7
and the greeting in the market places, and to be addressed by men with Rabbi. |
23:8
But be you not called Rābi: for One is your Master; but all ye are brethren. |
|
23:8
But be not ye called Rabbi; for one is your Rabbi, and ye are all brethren. |
23:9
And call no man Abā to you upon earth: for One is your Father, who is in heaven. |
|
23:9
And ye shall not call yourselves Father on earth; for one is your Father, who is in heaven. |
23:10
Neither be ye called Medabronee: for One is your Guide, -the Meshicha. |
|
23:10
And be ye not called guides; for one is your Guide, the Messiah. |
23:11
But he who is great among you, let him be your servitor. |
|
23:11
And the great one among you will be your servitor. |
23:12
For whosoever will exalt himself shall be humbled; and whosoever will abase himself shall be exalted. |
|
23:12
For whoever shall exalt himself, will be abased: and whoever shall abase himself, will be exalted. |
23:13 ¶
WOE to you, scribes and Pharishee, hypocrites! because you devour the houses of widows, with the pretext of prolonging your prayers; on account of which you shall receive the greater judgment. |
|
23:13
Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for ye devour the houses of widows, under the disguise of protracting your prayers. Therefore ye shall receive greater condemnation. |
23:14
Woe to you, scribes and Pharishee, hypocrites! because you hold the kingdom of heaven closed before the children of men; for you will not enter in yourselves, and them who are entering you will not permit to enter. |
|
23:14
Woe to you. Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for ye hold the kingdom of heaven closed before men; for ye enter not yourselves, and those that would enter ye suffer not to enter. |
23:15
Woe to you, scribes and Pharishee, hypocrites! because you go over sea and dry (land) to make one proselyte; and when you have done it, you make him doubly more a son of gihāna than yourselves. |
|
23:15
Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for ye traverse sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he is gained, ye make him a child of hell twofold more than yourselves. |
23:16
Woe to you, ye blind guides, who say, That [to him] who sweareth by the temple, it is nothing; but if he swear by the gold which is in the temple, he is liable! |
|
23:16
Woe to you, ye blind guides: for ye say, Whoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever shall swear by the gold that is in the temple, he is holden. |
23:17
You senseless and blind! for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? |
|
23:17
Ye fools, and blind: for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? |
23:18
And (that) whoever sweareth by the altar, it is nothing; but [if] he swear by the oblation which is upon it, he is liable. |
|
23:18
And, whoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing: but whoever shall swear by the oblation upon it, he is holden. |
23:19
You foolish and sightless! for which is greater, the oblation, or the altar that sanctifieth the oblation? |
|
23:19
Ye fools, and blind: for which is greater, the oblation, or the altar that sanctifieth the oblation? |
23:20
He therefore who sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things that are upon it. |
|
23:20
He therefore who sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all that is upon it. |
23:21
And he who sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it, and by whatever abideth in it. |
|
23:21
And he who sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth in it. |
23:22
And whosoever sweareth by heaven, sweareth by the throne of Aloha, and by Him who sitteth thereon. |
|
23:22
And he who sweareth by heaven, sweareth by throne of God, and by him that sitteth on it. |
23:23
Woe to you, scribes, Pharishee, hypocrites! because you tithe mint, dill, and cummin, and omit the more grave [requirements] of the law, -justice, benignity, and faithfulness. For these you should have done, and those not omitted. |
|
23:23
Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for ye tithe mint, and anise, and cummin, and omit the graver [matters] of the law, judgment, and mercy, and fidelity: these ought ye to do, and those not to omit. |
23:24
You blind guides, who strain out gnats and swallow camels. |
|
23:24
Ye blind guides, who strain out gnats, and swallow down camels. |
23:25
Woe to you, scribes and Pharishee, hypocrites! who cleanse the outside of the cup and dish (which) within are full of rapine and injustice. |
|
23:25
Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for ye cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish, while within they are full of rapine and wickedness. |
23:26
Sightless Pharishee! cleanse first the inside of the cup and the dish, that their outside also may be clean. |
|
23:26
Ye blind Pharisees, cleanse first the inside of the cup and dish, that their outside may be clean also. |
23:27
Woe to you, scribes and Pharishee, hypocrites! for you are like whited sepulchres, which without appear beautiful, but within are full of the bones of the dead and all impurity. |
|
23:27
Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for ye are like whited sepulchres, which appear comely without, but are within full of bones of the dead and all impurity. |
23:28
So you also from without appear to the sons of men as righteous, but within you are full of unrighteousness and hypocrisy. |
|
23:28
So ye also, outwardly, appear to men as righteous; but within, ye are full of iniquity and hypocrisy. |
23:29 ¶
WOE to you, scribes and Pharishee, hypocrites! because you rebuild the tombs of the prophets and beautify the sepulchres of the just; |
|
23:29
Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for ye build the tombs of the prophets and ye adorn the sepulchres of the righteous; |
23:30
and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been with them partakers in the blood of the prophets: |
|
23:30
and ye say: If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been participators with them in the blood of the prophets. |
23:31
thus bearing witness against yourselves, that you are the sons of them who killed the prophets. |
|
23:31
Wherefore ye are witnesses, against yourselves, that ye are the children of them that killed the prophets. |
23:32
And you also, -complete the measure of your fathers. |
|
23:32
And as for you, fill ye up the measure of your fathers. |
23:33
Serpents, birth of vipers! how will you escape from the judgment of gihāna? |
|
23:33
Ye serpents, ye race of vipers: how can ye escape the condemnation of hell? |
23:34
On this account, behold, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes; (some) of these you shall kill and crucify; and (some) of these you shall scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city. |
|
23:34
Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes; some of whom ye will kill and crucify, and some of them ye will scourge in your synagogues, and will persecute them from city to city: |
23:35
So that there shall come upon you all the blood of the just which hath been shed upon the earth; from the blood of Habil the righteous, unto the blood of Zakaria-bar-Barakia, whom you slew between the temple and the altar. |
|
23:35
so that on you may come all the blood of the righteous, which hath been shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zachariah, son of Barachiah, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. |
23:36
Amen I say unto you, that all these shall come upon this generation. |
|
23:36
Verily I say to you, that all these things will come upon this generation. |
23:37
Urishlem, Urishlem! who killest the prophets, and stonest them who are sent unto her, what times would I have gathered thy children, as gathereth the hen her young ones beneath her wings, and you would not! |
|
23:37
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent to thee: how often would I have gathered thy children, as a hen gathereth her young under her wings, and ye would not. |
23:38
Lo, your house is left unto you desolate. |
|
23:38
Behold, your house is left to you desolate! |
23:39
For I say unto you, That you shall not see me from henceforth, until you shall say, Blessed is he who cometh in the name of the Lord. |
|
23:39
For I say to you, That ye shall not see me henceforth, until ye shall say: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. |
